I play GW1 outside of Steam, but I have over 1,500 hours logged, which pretty much makes it my most played game ever. I played it off/on since it was in beta, and it was remarkable for the time. A AAA quality MMO with no monthly subscription fee was unheard of when it was released, and although it's not technically classified as a MMORPG because of its instanced-based areas, it certainly feels like one since it IS massive, multiplayer, online, and a role-playing game.

In fact, in many ways, GW1 was more social than other MMOs I've played. The population has died down hugely since GW2 was released, but the towns and outposts used to be full of life. People dancing, goofing around, participating in events, etc. In the original Prophecies campaign (my favorite) you ran most missions with full parties because it was too difficult to complete many on your own. It forced you to rely on others, and everyone in the party was important. Trading was even quite social, since there was no auction house. You had to advertise your item and then actually have a conversation with the buyer, which often resulted in some bartering and light chat.

Like many I have moved on to Guild Wars 2 and have no intention of going back, but GW1 will always have a special place in my nerdy gaming heart. Here are some fond memories I have:

- Roaming the beautiful introductory area for each newly created character (for those of you who haven't played, if I gave you the name everyone calls this intro it would be a bit of a spoiler).

- Receiving my obsidian armor (the highest armor achievement in the game).

- Soloing Underworld with my SoS rit. Drunk.

- Mad King Says events, and 30+ instances of Lion's Arch at full player capacity.

- The snowy, solitary Shiverpeaks.

- Traveling long distances and not knowing where you'll end up, because the map doesn't tell you everything.

- Buying runs to Drok's Forge. Virtual player taxis!

- Synchronized dance parties. The annual candy corn dance was always a sight to see.

- Playing hide n' seek with my guildies, where all the outposts in the entire world were game.

- Getting fed up with all the horrible typers and creating my own guild "Legendary Defenders of Grammar".

- All the amazing capes.

- Having to type /jump in order to...well, jump.

- Witnessing Factions' god awful voice acting for the first time.

I could go on, but suffice it to say, GW was an incredible and memorable experience. I'm not sure how much new players will enjoy it now, as its graphics and many of its mechanics are quite dated, but if you can get past all that it would definitely be a worthwhile purchase. The gameplay is certainly more complex than most MMOs in this genre, including Guild Wars 2, and has quite a big learning curve with its extensive, highly customizable skill system. It's especially worth a look if you're a GW2 player and want to see the beginnings of this rich game universe, or want to earn some of those cool rewards and titles associated with the Hall of Monuments. Just keep in mind, some of those could take a very long time.

I don't have a ton of playtime on Steam, but I have played this game for thousands of hours. I highly recommend it if you're into classic MMO's.

I play WoW a lot, but during the downtime between expansions, I found myself picking this up. And then proceeded to sink more than a thousand hours into it. It's a great MMO, though it suffers from a few small issues, I wouldn't write it off as bad. Worth looking into if you're after a new MMO to try out.

Guild Wars is one of my favorite games of all time. I happily paid $50 for each campaign and if I had the money I would do it again. Don't miss out.

Purchased this game back in 2010 for 19.99 one of the only games i actually paid cash for. I must say though this is a great game. Especially if you have people to join you. I would definetly buy this game again. I'm not even done with one campaign... and even this day in age there's quite a bit of people who still play guild wars 1 it's amazing. you can't go wrong at this price of the game trust me. i've played WoW since vanilla, Global Agenda since beta. This one was worth every penny for sure.

So far the best MMO I have ever played and am still playing... and compared to most MMOs, this game does not have a monthly recurring fee. I am definitely getting GW2 when it comes out.

Having experienced 2000+ hours of gameplay, I can say that Guild Wars offers the best team-based combat in the Online RPG market with the absence of a monthly fee. Although not a true MMO due to the use of instancing in explorable areas, this game excels in cooperative play with either strangers, guildmates, or friends. Guild Wars also contains several unlockable rewards for its sequel, Guild Wars 2.

Classic. This is where my heart lies when it comes to MMORPG's. I will fight for Tyria til I die.

One of the greatest original MMOs in my opinion. Competing with EQ and WoW when it originally was released. Though it's nowhere near the content of WoW or other newer MMOs, it is still a great play, finding myself playing it every once in a while.

The game is primarily PvP based. Monetized tournaments and PvP based guilds are abundant and ArenaNet, in my opinion, really understood what players were looking for in PvP, and even more so in Guild Wars 2. No longer is gear a factor in PvP.

Even the storyline was rather fun to play and follow. If you enjoy game lore then you will sure get a lot of lore out of Guild Wars. Small in-game content and books cover most of the lore of the Guild Wars universe.

Due to being PvP based, many people have turned away from the game. I would suggest waiting for Guild Wars 2 to release within the next 1-2 years of writing this review rather than buying the original. But, if you really want to follow the storyline and even get a head start in GW2 by filling your 'Hall of Monuments' then go ahead and buy it. If you do, you can even ask me for help.

Even though I recommend this game, I still suggest you buy Guild Wars 2 rather than 1. Everyone will agree that 2 is a huge improvement over 1, though lacking some 1 content that we all loved.

I kind of went crazy during the summer sale. I'm an idiot. This game was probably good when it came out but I just can't invest in it. It's also a bit too much like WoW for my tastes, though granted it's very different - it's similar enough to turn me off.
