About This Game

Cult of the Wind is a game about people who pretend to be airplanes.

"In an unknown time and place, a cult that worships the wreckage of ancient airplanes gathers to mimic the dogfights of old. With the peak of humanity far behind, their world is a mausoleum to a lush and verdant Art Deco past."

In Cult of the Wind, players compete and cooperate in ritualistic multi-player human dogfights, complete with imaginary weapons, pretend explosions, and airplane noises made with their mouths. Shower your friends in a hail of imaginary bullets and proclaim, "I got you! You have to lie down," to which they respond, "Nuh-uh, I have a shield." You argue about whether or not airplanes can have shields, meanwhile some other guy does a cannonball onto your head while whistling. It's great.

With an intuitive point-and-click level editor you'll be able to craft new levels or modify existing ones, then immediately share them with anyone on a server, even if you aren't the host. You can also craft a personalized appearance for your character with numerous articles of clothing and more.

  • Simple, robust level editor
  • Instantly share your creations with others
  • Character customization
  • Dozens of imaginary weapons and abilities
  • Infinitely expandable content
  • Blindingly high-speed mock combat
  • Weird noises

No one played this in Early Access because it wasn't finished.
No one plays it now it's out of Early Access because it isn't finished.
I once played a match with three other people, that was a good day.
The game could be fun if more people played it, as of now it is literally a graveyard.

On the other hand I'm wearing a robe and box car plane with a propeller hat.

I like the idea, I found it hilarious when I saw the trailers. The graphics look unique and nice, it has a great sound design and runs smoothly on a potato.

Why the thumbs down then?

It's not a game, it's just a "bag of potential" sold for money. The game is practically dead (3 people being online at a time tops) and it's multiplayer only. I wouldn't buy it, unless you like running around alone in a mid-sized multiplayer map doing nothing.

I'm not pretending I'm an airplane.
I AM AN AIRPLANE.

It's a great game, but it's sad there are no players online whatsoever. Maybe if there was a bot mode there would be more of a community.

Multiplayer-only game no one's playing and never really played. See for yourself:

www.steamcharts.com/app/293840

Cult of the Wind spent two months in Early Access - didn't change much during that time. What you get is 'released' title in unpolished state which due to level of developer's incompetence is dead on arrival. North of Earth (dev) failed to build game and any interest around it. As result there was no fanbase to begin with and there isn't any playerbase at the time of writing.

There is just one official server up and running. Empty. All four maps were designed for 16 players. All-time peak so far had 9 players in the game at the same time with no guarantee they all actually played and were doing so on the same server. Two or three times I managed to find another player after a while but selected maps were just incapable to provide enjoyable experience for teams of one (and after checking the rest of them, there is not a single map capable to do so with so few people online). Beside, gameplay and the whole idea behind it lacks polish.

'Character customisation' actually means three hats, two outfits and two accessories to choose from without even an option to remove any of them after selecting. You can either switch them or create new build/character if you want it to not wear a hat or something else you already picked up. Does it sound thought-out?

There are very few sound effects and I wouldn't describe any of them as great. Nor 'weird', or 'funny-weird'. The engine's sound following you whenever you move is actually quite annoying, I might add. There are no weapon effects. If you're shooting a machine gun, there are no bullets flying around. If you launch a rocket, you won't see it or any kind of explosion after hitting anything... It's really dull. Plus, I think that with more players there would be no chance to have any combat awereness and what's actually going on around. This game had potential to become something silly and fun like Battlefield Heroes maybe but the dev couldn't realise it.

Oh, if you stand still and shoot, your arms will stay in normal position with hands close to your body, shaking - it looks like you were having an epileptic attack. I find it... disturbing. There are no tutorials or any descriptions which pick up does what either. There is just not a single aspect that gives a feeling of being finished.

With 15 Euros as asking price it feels like a deliberate scam - developer just trying to get any cash while he still can for something not ready for release by any means... this game just joined the long list of dead multiplayer titles available on Steam such as Blacklight Tango Down, Section 8, Stellar Impact, Gun Monkeys and so on due to developer's lack of care. Maybe some folks will show up when the game inevitably lands in another bundle (it was already part of Indie Gala while it was still in EA - less than 2$ total for this and few other games) but I doubt they'll stick around.

Not when month after release the game didn't receive a single update.

---

Edit: Also, it looks extremely fishy when someone friends with the developer who has only games of that particular developer writes positive review right after the game is released on Early Access:

This is probably one of the coolest games I have ever played. Sadly, I have only done so by myself.

It is a multiplayer game.

This is a fun game, no doubt, it just doesnt seem quite finished. Coupled with the fact that few people play, makes me feel like this game is wasted potential so far.

The good:
Visual style
Fun, wacky cocept/gameplay
Camping is no problem. To do damage you got be constantly on the move
Robust map editor for you to get lost in your creativity

The bad:
Little content. Only a handful of maps(which dont feel different frome each other, in my opinion)And too few customization options for your human airplane.
Almsot nonexistent player base
$15 or your regional equivalent

If you can get this game in a bundle at a reasonable price then that would be the only time I recommend buying it. At full price id advise you to pass up on it.

The game seems very dead, hardly any players if at all. It's a real shame, the idea is brilliant, visually it's not bad and it has a few items that'll leave you laughing at how ridicously silly the game is, in a good way. But it's very sparse on content. Not worth a full price of 9,99 Euro. If anything more 2,75. The OST is surprisingly the best in all of this, sounds like a proffesional has made it. Only downvoted because of price.

The most simple thing about this game can be resumed in this article:
http://www.sizefivegames.com/2014/05/02/indie-advice-why-you-probably-shouldnt-make-a-multiplayer-game/

This game could be a great game, but there is simply nobody to play with, the game is deserted and therefore unplayable (there is at the moment no bots and no single player mode).

The game is very fun... for about 5 minutes. There just isn't really that much to do. The one offical server never has anybody playing, and there are no bots, so there is no reason to play the game right now... shame that such a great concept went to waste :(

This game could be a neat concept. People going around in plane costumes, shooting each other. What more could you ask for? How about a game that has activity? Thanks to the developers lack of updates and ways of keeping players coming on back, this game is dead, which is a shame. Even with Workshop, this game doesn't have much to offer. Don't bother.

Multiplayer only game but was not marketed/developed correctly. Unable to really comment on the game because, literally, nobody plays it.

This is another one of those games that might have been good, but for the indie devs lack of skill in areas other than pure game design.

I wish I could recommend this game. Poor planning on the devs part just killed any chance of there ever being an online community. I really wanted to enjoy the wierdness of running around and "shooting" other players but alas, there are no players to shoot.

This game was so disappointing, I had to create a "Disappointment" category exclusively for it.

1/10 Would not buy as part of a bundle again.

In Irrational Games' stunning conclusion to the Bioshock Infinite saga, the people of the no-longer-floating city of Columbia must content themselves with pretending to fly. Crash-landing back in reality and thrust into the remains of WWII, classic air battles like the Battle of Britain, the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot, or the Battle of "Hey! That imaginary missle totally hit your imaginary plane!" "Nu-uh!" "It really did! You're dead!" Relive the greatest moments in aviation history without the planes. 11/10 Game of the Generation
