What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

Reviews

“The concept – a dungeon crawler where your friends control the monsters – is as brilliant as it is elegantly simple, and it’s got oodles (or blob monsters, as it were) of style to back it up.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Grab three friends and gather round; this is a dungeon crawl you won't forget in a hurry.”
US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”
PC Gamer

Lopsided play, get one good shop and its sealed, you will get to play human the whole game, because when you do die, the others will be weak, and won't likely make it too a shop in time. If you're good at last hitting then this game is cake, you win. You claim it is a 3v1 game with three of your friends as ghosts. It is in fact a 1v1v1v1, as the last hitting to become human pits the monsters against eachother, maybe one monster holds back, lets the other die and takes human, making the whole 3v1 non existant. If you do play as a team, never expect to become human, if you do get so lucky as to last hit, hope for the ghouls eye, or one of the other extremely lopsided items that will carry you until the end of the game, and dont worry about earning no monster points, your enemies will be weak once they finally get human, easy enough to kill. Just a really frustrating game where everyone who doesnt get to be human ends up not wanting to play. I think this game had potential, visually its very cool and retro, and in a lot of ways it seems and looks like a great game, once you realize the mechanics are basically: best last hitter is best at this game, and get to be human therefore best at getting shops making the game not fun for those who never get a chance AND furthermore, the fact that that person can lose by not beating the boss, is no victory, as you know in your heart that aside from that single boss battle, you were on the sidelines to someone elses adventure, and simply a monster he sliced through. I think this game can really show you how greedy some of your friends are.( the whole 1v1v1v1 aspect) but its not like I can ask my friends to lose on purpose right? So sit tight, and grab some popcorn, because your friend just got the ghouls eye on the second shop and it's aleady game over.

Crawl

This game is a refreshing entrant into the couch-multiplayer games genre.

As much as these types of games are appreciated within the gaming community, Crawl offers something more unique that I personally had never seen before in a dungeon crawler. That is saying a lot, given how many of those types of games are on Steam alone.

Unlike many of those games, Crawl is played out in a king of the hill style, with one player controlling the hero, and the other three controlling monsters and traps. Kill the hero: become him. This is a mechanic I had never seen before and am thouroughly impressed with how well it was implemented. It draws you in. The fights and tension between players is genuine, and when you find yourself shouting with excitement... or resentment, without even realizing it, that is a very good thing.

The art is amazing. As someone who appreciates pixel art style, especially the retro, arcade-type pixelation, the art and animation immediately stood out to me. Very fluid and well done but at the same time still able to hold that nostalgic factor.

The soundtrack, while limited, shines where it is implemented. A very omnious feeling throughout, and the tracks change appropriately depending on certain events such as a player approaching victory or entering a boss fight.

The gameplay is well balanced and thought out, characters and monsters can be upgraded, and the rubber-banding is appropriate. Players can come back from any defecit at any point in the game.

Overall Opinion

The game is a must buy in my opinion. It is best played with friends, but I have enjoyed several hours of playtime with the AI, which can give you a run for your money. Updates are still on the horizon at the time of this review, showing the devs really care about this game and its success. Their forum on their website posts upcoming updates for the game and gives players the oppurtunity to give feedback, which is a welcome stand-out from a lot of other developers.

With more content on the horizon, Crawl is shaping up to be a very promising game. As of now even, it is definitely a complete, polished game worthy of many hours of playtime.

A pretty awesome party game with good atmosphere, okay graphics and music and fast paced combat.
Great if you have 1-3 friends to play with (against) not so great if you prefer to play alone. AI is not as good obviously.

In essence, a 4 player single screen combat with dodge/attack mechanics and RPG elements but definitely meant as a party game.

This game. Insane.
I play this with my friends, hook up 3 controllers and then one person plays keyboard. It is a very well made game, i have yet to come across a bug, and my friends and I love playing it. It has a fresh approach to competitive multiplayer and it pulls it off well.
This game is definitely worth adding to your library.

Great game. My favorite local-multiplayer game I've gotten off of Steam so far. If you have freinds over for drinks often, this is a great purchase.

I don't write many reviews, but this game forced me to show my appreciation to the developers in some way. I love how well-suited the game is for local 4 player co-op, the level progession and way the game pits you against your friends allows for sessions that can last hours. The awesome pixel art animations and a great soundtrack just add to what is already a solid base game. I'm excited to see what else the folks over at Powerhoof have in store for this game.

Well, well, well... Of all of the roguelike, couch co-op indie games out there, Crawl has to be my favourite. The atmosphere of the game is just creepy enough to send the willies up newcomers, not to mention the new intro cutscenes narrated by the magnificent Old Shrimpeyes. I don't know what that man eats, drinks or starves himself of to get that kind of voice, but whatever it is, I want it.
Intro and Atmosphere aside, Crawl is just a boatload of fun to play. I picked up the Steam Link recently and said box of goodness has proven itself to be quite good at processing these pixel-style games. It's situated in my living room, so I of course went on to have a real couch co-op experience with a few mates which consisted mainly of ghostly noises and violent screaming. The graphics are great, especially when running at 60fps as you get to watch the current human shifting fearfully from hall to hall before being set upon by rats, spiders and goblin grasshopper thingies, all of which are controlled by either bots or the people sitting next to you.
The best part is, if you haven't been human for a while, you gain Wrath every time the lucky fellow levels up, which in turn allows you to evolve your goblin grasshopper thingy into a rock-lobbing giant. This system of EXP for the living and Wrath for the dead makes the game a lot fairer and keeps things interesting in a long runthrough.
Overall, I'd recommend Crawl for anyone hankering for some old fashioned jolly cooperation; I can't remember what I bought it for because I was a pre-release funder, but whatever it costs now, it's worth it!

By far one of the best local competitive games I've played in a while. It's fun and infurating to play with friends and a little chaotic all at once. There's a lot of repeat-stuff, but you never get the same combination, which makes it feel like a new game each time. The more you play, the more you unlock, and more challenging it is to complete the levels.

What an awesome concept! Well excecuted as well. One player plays as the hero and other players or AI play as monster/traps, possessing whatever happens to be in a room. Players can upgrade monsters in between levels and buy gear as they come across the shop. Simple controls, all you use is directional and an A and B button. Can have one player on mouse and the other on keyboard.

Can see many fun and frustrating nights with friends in the future! Would love to see more bosses.
