What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

Rock Paper Shotgun

US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”

Crawl is an incredibly fun multiplayer dungeon crawler, where you take control of a hero, or monsters.
At the beginning, everyone selects what monster leader they'd like, which determines what monster minions they'll be able to use within the game. Once a game starts, one player is chosen to be the human hero. The other players start as ghosts, that can only affect the player through possessing traps around the dungeon, or spawning as a monster on a pentagram. All monsters have unique abilities.

If a monster kills the hero, they will become the hero themselves, and transform the previous hero into a monster. If the hero kills a monster, then they will gain xp, as well as give "wrath" to the enemy ghosts. The ghosts can then use this to upgrade their monsters into evolutions with different abilities. This keeps the game balanced very well.
A hero can use collected gold to purchase new weapons, spells and accessories at shops. The hero also uses xp to level up to level 10. Once that has been reached, a portal will open on the floor, and allow the hero access to the boss.

Boss fights are interesting, because the enemy ghosts can take control of different parts of the boss. Shooting acidic balls out of one hydra head, or bubbles out of a tentacle.

There's a lot to the game that makes it very interesting, and can be quite strategic if you really plan things well.
It's a lot of fun when played with friends, although the AI is also quite competent.

Overall, a great game!

Steam is flooded with so many bad "early access" and "indie" games...

This is a GEM. Had this been released on some console years ago it would have been a cult classic.

if you have 3 friends, and at least 2 extra controllers, please just get this game. It's amazing.

Also, did anyone else see the gaben mini-boss thing?

I've played this game ever since it came out. I invited some friends over, and we had a blast screwing each other over, and continue to to this day. The game has come so far, starting with just 3 evolutionary trees and a handful of monsters, to 10+ trees, 40 monsters, and a gigantic variety of monster-slaying weaponry to fend off your impending doom. If you're looking for a fun party game with an arcadey, rpg feel, this is the game for you. If I had the opportuntiy to buy this game again, I would gladly do so,

I do have a few minor complaints -- you almost need controllers to have the best experience. Playing with the keyboard or mouse is sufficient, but controllers provide a more fuild playstyle. Other than that, the only other problem I have is that some evolutionary trees seem to be better than others, but that really depends on your proficiency with certain monsters.

As of when this review was written, there are only two bosses, but the ghosts work together inside of one boss to thwart the player. There is a hydra, with three heads -- fire, ice, and poison -- and a kranken that fires an enormous laser whilist trapping the hero in bubbles and spewing pink acid. Nothing is more satisfying than killing the boss on your ast try, with 1 health remaining... or, killing the hero at the very last second.

Having all 4 players isn't a necesity, but does provide a unique experience. Colluding with your friends to utterly destroy the human is such a fun feeling. If you don' have 4 friends immediately around, playing vs another friend is a challenge that tests your ability to fully utilize your monsters and/or hero abilities and skills. On the off-chance you have exactly 0 people to play with, you can always fight with the AI on varrying difficulty levels.

10/10, would kill friends over and over again.
