What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

“The concept – a dungeon crawler where your friends control the monsters – is as brilliant as it is elegantly simple, and it’s got oodles (or blob monsters, as it were) of style to back it up.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Grab three friends and gather round; this is a dungeon crawl you won't forget in a hurry.”
US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”

good game

No but srsly in the recent years of degrading game depth/skill ceiling, increasing focus on pretty graphics and simply catering to the average person, this game is what you and your group of competitive gaming oldones need. It's easy to pick up, since its basically only two action buttons, but the sheer amount of movement, item and monster mechanics allow it to be played in uncountable ways.

To cut to the point: This piece of software right here is pretty much a top-down twin-stick rpg/shooter versus/co-op game, currently only supporting local multiplayer. Controls are basically L-stick to move/aim, A to shoot/slash, B to dodge/special move.

The goal for every player is the same, kill the boss after reaching lvl10 in human form, to be released from the dungeon. A sudden-death at the start determines the first ''runner'' to enter the dungeon in human form, your slaughtered companions souls steadily haunting your every step to kill you and take away your humanity for themselves i.e. their try at defeating the dungeon. The dungeon in itself is harmless, but every trap and contraption can be used by the ghosts of the other players to make your run a living bullethell. Furthermore each room contains a differing amount of pentagrams which can be used as a ghost to spawn into a monster, each with its own unique moveset. These creeps can be lvled after every floor, levels in human form of enemy player determine your evolution points. Human Form spends picked up cash to get new weapons, artifacts, moves etc. each weapon with its own moveset, each ability with its own uses. After a human form hits lvl 10 they can enter the boss portal on every floor to have one of the three tries at defeating the boss, problem is, the boss is also controlled by the enemy players, making this whole game a really competitive experience best enjoyed if all players have the gitgud mentality.

Soundtrack is amazing, fits the game perfect, really raw dark 8bit sounds whose rhythm still keeps you looped into the game.
Graphics can be seen on screens.

Only missing feature is online-multiplayer, in other aspects this is a game I support in every way and would buy again just to support development and show my gratitude for creating this piece of art.
Definitely worth more than 10bucks.

p.s. gitgud, dodge moves only, abuse the MoI, take the bow, crush the boss

I bought this way back when it very first came out for I think it was 69p and to watch this game evolve over this period of time is amazing. This is a brilliant dungeon clrawler that was vvry thought out and has that retro/ arcade style to it to make it feel more like a classic dungeon crawler. I love the idea of taking control of monsters to kill your friends with and the progression based evolution of your monsters as you can choose what you want to evolve. This choices of evolvution are pretty wide making each playthrough feel dyanamic and unqiue. All in all this game is hours of fun with alot of replayability and I definetly reccommend that you buy it.

Wow..

I don't often do reviews but this was definitely worth reviewing.

Powerhoof has managed to take the classic dungeon crawler formula and managed to make dying fun. It's currently early acces but that shouldn't stop you from giving this a try! Crawl has this Arcade-type of vibe to it where your name consists out of 3 letters and it asks you to "Enter a coin".

Gameplay: From the beginning you get to type who you wish to worship with each "God" offering you 3 types of monsters which each have their own special abilities and attacks. Throughout completing games which can also be done all by yourself against AI's of which you can select their difficulty for, you unlock new Artifacts, new Monsters/Gods, new Weapons and new Evolutions. Evolutions you ask? You're either the player, or you're the ghost. As the game starts the player will be selected by dropping all players in a room with and they will have to fight eachother. The winner will be the first to play as the "hero" ..for as long as you survive. The other players will come back as ghosts with one goal to kill you. They can do so by taking over traps and spawning in as monsters. Each time the player kills a monster EXP will be dropped on their death. This EXP will level up the player making him (Triggered feminazi's) stronger, however, as soon as the player levels up, the ghosts will get Wrath. Wrath can be used to evolve your monsters making THEM even stronger. Your goal is to be the first to defeat the boss, bosses can be fought by activating the portal once you're level 10. I must personally say, the bosses are quite tough and will require a few attempts to actually defeat. But! one game only allows you to fight the boss 3 times before it ends.

Shops. Oh boi, yes there's shops. Shops offer a decent amount of items that you can purchase using coins. These items consist out of Artifacts (Giving buffs and sometimes 'companions' such as Whirlwinds and orbiting shield) Potions to trade in 1 skill for 2 skills. ex: +2 Strength -1 Vitality. There's also scrolls which allow you to switch your special ability which standardly is roll. And the best part! Weapons.. Of course! Clubs, Daggers, Staffs, tons of stuff to buff you up.

Art. The 2D Pixelated art is absolutely stunning and unique.

Controls are simple, WASD for walking and LMOUSE & RMOUSE for interacting and combat.

For now gameplay gets a little repetitive quickly but I'm still rating it a 8.8/10

Crawl is a dungeon crawler with an 8-bit heart of gold, a fun lark that takes on a whole new life when played with friends, and a game with one big, conditional flaw.

The art style and music are pure retro: Modeled after arcade dungeon crawlers, they manage to somehow give the hero and monsters their own personalities and a trippy, kinetic feel.

If Atari’s classic Gauntlet (the 1985 original, not the Warner Bros. remake due this September) was three-quarters view instead of top-down, it might have looked like this.

Pros:
+ It's good that both heroes and monsters have personality, because you are going to spend a lot of time on both
+ Being bad guy in this game feels good, just as being a hero
+ It's extremely easy to pick up, and smooth to play single, or multiplayer
+ Best enjoyed playing with friends - hope you don't mind killing them
+ Playing as the monster constantly changes
+ Monster abilities or evolution trees are extremely wide
+ As the hero, you've got extremely variety of different weapons, items, or potions, making this game even funnier

Cons:
- There is no online multiplayer yet
- Room designs are kind of plain - straightfoward rooms with some bits of repetivive, destrutible furniture, traps and pentagrams for the ghost, and well, another room
- Only two final bosses at this moment, and both of them are balanced differently. Kourok is a hard to deal with, and on the other hand Ghidraak is a piece of cake

This game isn't worth 10€. It's worth way, way more than that.

95/100

Angry at a friend, colleague or partner?

Make them a hero in "Crawl" and crush them as a megadeathmonsterfromhell.

Easy to learn, hard not to get horribly mauled, fun for the whole family
