What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

“The concept – a dungeon crawler where your friends control the monsters – is as brilliant as it is elegantly simple, and it’s got oodles (or blob monsters, as it were) of style to back it up.”
Rock Paper Shotgun

“Grab three friends and gather round; this is a dungeon crawl you won't forget in a hurry.”
US Gamer

“Crawl takes its inspiration from the arcade cabinets of old and plays exactly like a distilled, quarterless version of those experiences.”
PC Gamer

You may be thinking, "Hey, my life is depressing and I don't have any friends. Is this any good single player?" As someone with a bleak existence also, I can say yes. This game is great Singleplayer.

It's got a lot of replayability, even with single player, and the pixel art is phenomenal. You unlock more items, enemies, and weapons as you play, making the game better the more you play it. Despite the simple controls, the game is ♥♥♥♥ing hard. The only thing I'm good at is gaming. My social skills suck, and all my experience gaming and stroking my ginormous yet lonely pickle has never quite managed to get me a job, so i've had a lot of time honing my skills. I still struggle to beat this one.

Overall, buy this thing, even if you're lonely. You won't regret it as much as you regret your life.

I love Crawl. This game is so good.

I got a co-worker to play Crawl, after hearing that he loved couch multiplayer games. I raved about it, and he was skeptical.

The next day at work, he comes up to me and goes "OH MY GOD, CRAWL. It is SO MUCH BETTER than you could EVER have explained. It is SO GOOD."

If that's not a recommendation, I don't know what is.

I have found this game to be very entertaining and in many cases hilarious when I play with friends. The couch co-op is something in gaming that AAA gaming companies seem to be shunning lately and quite frankly that is a mistake. This game is a breath of fresh air in that regard. Crawl is a fun game, a game that(at least in my experience) has no broken combos to use, has plenty of monsters that are all really fun to use, and traps that are not overpowered but not useless.

The only downside I can imagine that this game has is the fact that it doesnt have a playable soundtrack to listen to for the Steam Library, because the music is one of the great things about this game.

Listen. If you read the other reviews you'll find that the only, and I mean ONLY drawback that this phenominal game posses, is no online multiplayer. So do me, yourself and everyone else that loves this game, and the company that made it (Which is literally just two guys. ♥♥♥♥ing two guys made this whole freaking amazing game by themselves) a favor and buy this game. So they can earn some well deserved cash and hopefully implement online multiplayer.

Really great party game. Super simple to play but a lot of fun. I'm very pleased with the AI in this game. While it isn't the same as playing with other people, they do well enough that the game is still fun to play alone. A game with 3 AI takes me around a half hour to complete so it makes for a perfect game when you need a little break. Would totally recommend.

Crawl is a single or up to four player local co-op game. The retro style and the pixel art is flawless. This games concept is interesting and well executed. You can play as the monsters or the hero. Who ever lands the final blow on the hero becomes the hero. If one player is really good at the hero the other player will have leveled up their monster meaning they can take over. Another great point is that when it comes to the boss fight the other three players get to each control a part of the boss while the fourth player tries to beat the game. The different upgrade paths in the monsters keeps the game diverse and intersenting.

Cons: one thing this game is missing is online co-op

This game is looking up to become a well polished multiplayer game. This game is great with friends and is a fun quick burst of gameplay.

I cannot sing enough praise for this game. I host game nights almost every weekend at my house and the one title that inevitably gets brought up every single solitary time is CRAWL. This game has felt complete for a long time already but the Devs just keep pumping out more content, polish, and mechanics. This in my mind is the bar that has been set for every other Couch Competitive game out there, Great job guys, if you make more games after CRAWL it will without a doubt be in my steam library.

This is a solid local multiplayer game. Fantastic for small parties or get-togethers when you just want some stupid fun that doesn't involve much of a time investment.

Don't have friends to play with? Well, it's a pretty solid single player as well.

Satisfying overall. Worth the full price.
