What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

One player is the hero, exploring a randomly generated dungeon full of traps and monsters - all controlled by the other players. If you slay the hero you take their place and it’s your turn to crawl! Then it's a race to gain enough XP and loot to reach the final battle, where it's all on one as the other players collectively control the hulking final boss!

I wanted this game as soon as I saw the trailers, and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I've played it everyday since I got it. It's a fast-paced game with great music, atmosphere, gameplay, and a lot of challenge without too steep a curve. I have only played with AI so far, and I still have a lot of fun. They feel like proper opponents, and help set the illusion that you're playing with people.

I first used keyboard controls. They're alright; I wouldn't advise you slouch or curl up while playing though, as there's a lot of rapid button-pushing involved and that'll make your hands cramp up very quickly. I now use an iBuffalo Classic USB gamepad; the same goes for it, although that might just be because it's a new gadget and hasn't been broken in yet. Both control sets work great! Word to the wise, though: As of now, you can't adjust the gamepad controls in the main menu; you have to start a game and then use the controls menu that appears immediately after.

The developers are still working out the kinks, I imagine, and they're adding new content all the time. The brief story-like introductions have some great variety to them, and there's nothing more awesome than going through all the new monsters, weapons, and items you unlock after every game. I have no complaints!

Great game! A must have at any price.

If you are in to free for all with local 4 players on one computer. The graphics look similar to "Sword & Sworcery". But the game is something you've never experienced before.

Only played it for a little bit but the concept behind it is amazing. Using Nvidia Gamestream to play with friends makes it twice as fun and definetly makes it more enjoyable then playing against bots which is fun anyway.

Amazing game for the price. Crawl has a great atmoshpere with awesome art and animations. It takes a while to figure the game out, but once you know whats going on it is a blast with friends. I play with the AI to unlock new monsters, items, and whatnot, and I still had some fun with the AI.

-Great Atmosphere
-Devs continue adding features
-Low price for quality
-Great asymmetrical local multiplayer
-AI isn't terrible if you dont have friends

Yeah, I didn't play that game for long, but my reason is that I want to enjoy it with my friends. This is definetly a game you should play with your buddies. It is a dungeon crawler, but the most authentic and unusual one you have ever played. And you know what? It works out really well. The pixelart looks awesome and I really dig the music which fits the artstyle perfectly. Really cool music and presentation and I didn't even get to the gameplay. This dungeoncrawler lets you fight against your friends. Your friends are actually the enemy, not the AI as it usually would be in a coop game. At first, all the players fight against each other and the last one alive gets to "crawl" the dungeon while his friends try killing him as all sorts of mobs. The variation is really surprising, you play a fish, a undead, a samurai and so much more. Those are the opponents of the human player. As soon as one of the dead players kills the human one, he gets to be human. This sounds really weird but it totally works and is probably lots of fun together. I really love that the game finishes so complete. The animations in the menu alone are cool with the music.

Interesting and fun, and well-implemented concept.

Consider it to be a combination of games like 'the Duck game' and a 2d roguelike.

The game starts off where one player has to kill the other two before anyone can move on. Game over for the other two, right? WRONG. That's what makes this game unique. The other two (in ghost form) can either 'possess' traps or spawn monsters to fight the survivor. You know how you always have to kill monsters to progress in roguelikes? This time, the monsters are your friends.

The only thing I'd say it's missing is online mp via steam. It's still a great game, though.

At version 0.9 I would say this game is a great buy if you want to play a local multiplayer game that is both cooperative in one aspect and competitive in another. This game is cooperative because you join up with your dead allies and try to kill the current hero, but at the same time you want that last hit to become a hero, so you might not want to pull your weight during some encounters until the right moment arrives. Also, playing against three of your friends as a hero is a pretty big challenge considering how strong some monsters are, so going first AI on hard mode can be fun to play against since their aim is pretty on point and can make for a great challenge at some times, since I have seem them occassionally stick to walls and just die there.
Playing by yourself isn't exactly the most amount of fun and having to unlock new monsters and items can be considered a both positive and negative, since it gives you something to work for, but at the same time it would be nice to have everything to play with your friends from the start. Also, unlocking everything seems like it would take less than 9 hours of gameplay, so unlocking items and monsters is not really a big grind, which helps.
I think if they added a few more bosses and balanced a few of the weak monsters, then this game would be 10/10 when playing with friends.

Overall,
if you got friends and want to have fun killing each other, then this is a game you should buy.

Absolutely fantastic game!

Let me start off by saying that if my 50 hours of logged gameplay have taught me anything, its that this is one of the most balanced and fun games I have ever bought. The replay-ability of this game is actually amazing! I used to play this game with my brother a year ago and now I have most of the people on my college dorm floor actually addicted to palying it. This, combined with the fact that the game isn't actually finished is stunning. The balance between human and monster gameplay is amazing. Many people will talk bad about how some monsters you can just troll with, and to that I say, "Git gud."

The only problems I have observed with this game are the variety of final bosses. There are currently two. Most of the time a certain player has the skills to destroy a certain boss, no matter how good the boss controlers are. Therefore, sometimes its up to the flip of a coin as to if someone will win the game automatically or not. HOWEVER, I am happy to hear that they have annaounced and are in the progess of making a thrid boss. This will fix the lack of variety.

Another note is that the longer you play the more you find really cool room themes. Some I have seen semi-frequently are rooms with the walls/floors lined with blood sigils or rooms that have grass and vegetation. I would love to see even more of these fun-to-find environments as the game is developed.

Overall, this early access game could be a game all on its own right now if it wanted to. However, I am very glad work is still being done on it. I encourage literally everyone to buy and play this game. I hope it brings as mouch joy to you as it does to me and my entire college doem floor!

An amazing game best played with a controller, Crawl is a local (and maybe, in the future, online) competitive dungeon crawler game, where while one person is the dungeoneer, everyone else are wraiths and need to kill him, once you kill him, the person who killed him becomes the new dungeoneer. The graphics fit the game very well, the upgrades are amazing, and there is quite a bit of content.

10/10

Even in its Early Access state, This is one of the best local Co-op Games on steam. It is fun and competitive. The graphics look great and the gameplay feels really solid and works great. All the game needs is more bosses and it will be perfect. Lucky for us it is in early access and the devs are very involved. I highy recommend this game.

Pure fun, just 30 min gameplay for now but i think its nice, awesome pixel art and great soundtracks, and its developing as the developer says. Im a bit disappointed because i thought about that the game has coop but you have to play with bots or you have to find steam friends to play the game onliner. if you are not a huge fan of pixel art and soundtracks, and fast gameplay, you may wait for a little discount

How can you make dungeon crawling fun?
-Make your friends the enemies? Check
-Offer a variety of weapons and items to equip? Check
-Offer varios monsters that can all be upgraded? Check
-Have several weapons, monsters, items, and monster "loadouts" to unlock? Check
-Do all of this while simultaeniously causing you to make enemies of all your friends? Check and Check!

Alright, so to start, if you know Binding of Isaac or Enter the Gungeon more actually, it plays like that with hack n' slash combat. What happens is one person (or AI) is randomly chosen to take control of the hero while the other people (or AI) take on the rolls of the spirits. It is the Hero's job to reach at least level 10 and kill the boss, all while surviving the traps and monsters that lurk in the dungeon. The hero also needs to stock up on various gear and weapons. The spirits are tasked with taking down the hero by means of possesing the traps and summoning runes that lay marked on the floor. Once they kill the hero, they then take on the role of hero, slayer of ghouls and the fiends they possess. Throughout the game, the hero levels up and sometimes gets rewarded with gold by killing monsters and sometimes finding interactive objects. The spirits on the other hand evolve by earning their own currency gained by causing harm to the hero. It is a fun and rewarding back and forth game that is surprisingly well balanced with no bugs that I have encountered. I bought this game just a few days ago, then found it was also part of my Humble Monthly. I did not request a refund from steam for my purchase however because this game is easily worth the money I paid. I would recomend this game to anyone who has local buddies (or can play solo) and loves dungeon crawlers.

Things it could improve would be to add online functionality, and more diversity to the level design (maybe make each chapter go with the theme the title implies of sorts) and just more content overall (though it is honestly not needed).

Go give the game a chance!

This game is fantastically fun. You may find it overwhelmingly hard at first, but after one or two games you'll get the hang of things and be loving it.

Best played with friends, it's very well balanced and does give entertainment to all ability levels. If you don't have any friends, the AI is very good and feels very human-like too.

You may be a bit tired of pixel art by now, but here it's done really well and looks great. It is also smoothly animated which helps when coping with the fast-paced nature of the game.

I absolutely love it, and I've been dying to play more everyday since buying.

I love playing this with my son, but I haven't seen any updates from the developers in awhile. I posted some ideas in the forums that I think would make the game absolutely great and help balance out the late-game where heroes can get really overpowered and cause the game to drag on; but most everyone thinks their ideas are great, don't they? A large selection of options like in Worms Armageddon and Super Smash Brothers may also boost replayablility and make each game more (or less) interesting. Anyway, I would like to see that this game continues to develop and hope that it will get more balanced out.

Overall, this game is a 9/10 and definitely worth getting if you've got a few friends to play a local co-op game with. Lots of replayability!

Be a dungeon master without the hassle of being a dungeon master? Sweet. Playing with 3 other people in what makes a solid and fun arcade game. Double sweet. Struggling to find people to play because people find its two buttopn system either underwhelming or boring? Lame. Really fun game, but needs the right crowd to play. Well polished and great gameplay mechanics make this a fun one, just wish it had online play.

This game is probably one of the best local co-op games on steam right now. It has some of the most original gameplay for a game I've ever played. The game is very well balanced, strategic, has a high skill ceeling, and most importantly, it's a ton of fun. If youre looking for a good couch co-op game, look no further.

PS: Devs, please add online co-op!
