What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We've been getting together with friends to play Crawl since the first few days of development. It's a game designed to play again and again, and it's always been a blast showing off new content - watching strategies form, alliances rise and fall, and gaining invaluable feedback. Now it's time we opened it up to everyone, so you can all watch the game evolve and contribute your thoughts and ideas like our friends have been doing over the last year and a bit.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have enough planned for Crawl Early Access to take us through to at least Early 2015. Beyond then we'll see if we're still having new ideas for things to add!”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Crawl will have more monsters, deities, bosses, weapons, items, traps, environments, things to do, and secrets to discover. Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Crawl is fully playable for up to 4 players around the same PC using keyboard, mouse, or controllers. The core experience of a crawl match is complete and ready to play with your friends, or with the AI bots. There are 3 deities to choose from, 30+ monsters to inhabit, loads of weapons and items and one huge boss to battle.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Once early access is complete we intend to raise the price, so get in early and see how the game evolves!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We're really keen to hear about everyone's experiences playing Crawl. The early feedback we've received from showing the game has already helped shape it for the better. So we'll be hanging out on the steam forums, grabbing your feedback and ideas for new monsters, mechanics and content, and using your collective experiences to perfect the game's balance.”

Crawl is a unique experience that can only be described with one word. Awesome.
This dungeon crawling masterpiece is incredibly fun to play. I love playing it so much. Here's why:
-Radomized Dungeons: Each time you play the game, you get something different. Even the textures on the wall are different each run.
-Wide Variety of Weapons: There are lots of different weapons to choose from, and not all of them are the same. There are heavy melee, light melee, ranged weapons, and magic weapons as well as various spells/abilities that can be aquired during a run.
-Play as the Monsters: This game is meant for 2-4 players (I suggest 4 even if 3 are bots), 1 player is the hero while the other 3 are ghosts who can become monsters to try to kill the hero and take his place. It adds a unique feel to this game.
-Multiplayer Mayhem: This game really is meant to be played by 4 people (even if can be played by 1), with 4 people this game becomes an all out brawl to become the hero and beat the boss to clear the game. It is an unforgettable experience to gather some friends and just play this game.
Crawl is an amazing game and the devs should be really proud of themselves. I can tell that they put a lot of hard work and energy into making this game the best it can be. I really hope to see more content added to Crawl to make it an even better experience.

This is the perfect definition of a fun, well optimized, beat-em-up strategy game. Although what may seem challenging at first, progressing through the game getting slowly better is a fun ride that everybody on Steam should enjoy. One con: No multiplayer. But i see this problem to be fixed momentarily. Get Crawl today!

The Recipe for Crawl goes something like this:
• a dash of inverted D&D (one player, three DMs)
• a sprinkle of Tag
• a cup of Legend of Zelda
• three tablespoons Altered Beast
• 20 pounds of arcade nostalgia

The goal is simple: kill the final boss and regain your humanity. However, there's only one soul to have and four greedy dead paws trying to grab it. Who has the humanity now? Everybody gang up and kill him. Killing blow takes the soul. This pattern repeats itself until somebody becomes powerful enough to face the final boss. Whether they succeed or not depends on the skill of all involved.

This is some of the best couch entertainment I've seen in a while. It tickles my heart with its presentation, seeming so serious but hinting at its self-awareness.

EARLY ACCESS REVIEW – CRAWL

Details
Developer: Powerhoof
Engine: Unity
Genre: Action / RPG
Mode: Single-player / Local Co-op and Multi-player
Release year: 2014 (Early Access)

I don't usually recommend Early Access games for others, simply due to fact that most of them are in really, really bad shape, despite being under the development for a long time, even for a year or two. Good news for you, because Crawl is an exception!

Crawl is a local co-op dungeon crawler roguelike game for up to 4 people. That's right, it's a roguelike game more or less, which means that everytime a game is over, you will have to start again from the beginning! Sounds fun, doesnt it? It really is, trust me.

Point of the game is that one person gets to be a "Hero" while your friends and / or AI will be monsters and are trying to kill you. When the hero is killed by a monster, that monster becomes the hero and everybody else are fighting against that player, and so on...

The intense battles happen in randomized rooms. As the hero goes to a new room, the monsters are able to choose their spawning points by floating around as ghosts. After that the deadly battle begins! Every player are able to do regular and special attacks. When the monsters get slayed, they will become back to ghosts, which basically just a "spectator mode".

Every now and then you can go to a shop room and buy some weapons and upgrades for your hero. There are also traps all over the rooms and you can use them for your advantage. These mechanics will make every battle feel unique and different from each other.

Each stage is finished by going down and deeper for the next stage through the trapdoor, similiar to how The Binding of Isaac works in that regard. When a stage is finished, players are given a chance to evolve their monsters to become stronger. The better you fight, the more points you can spend to upgrade your abilities.

Once the player reaches level 10, he is able to challenge the game's "Final Boss" by going to a portal room. There are currently only two different bosses in this build, but there will be most likely more in the future. Also there are some unlockables such as weapons and it feels rewarding when you get them.

The game has really a classical feel, thanks to the old school graphics and soundtrack. There's already a good selection of monsters and weapons and a solid variety in levels. Despite all that though, more content to the game would be welcome, just to make the whole experience bigger, better and replayable, so that you and your friends would come back for more!

All in all, the game's concept is excellent and it has potential to become a modern day classic. It is already in a very good state, but let's just hope that it'll be even better after the official release!

The Good
☺Extremely well developed and smart AI
☺Simple and fun gameplay with really unique concept
☺Great pixelated artwork and graphics
☺Fantastic oldschool sound effects and soundtrack
☺Smooth silk performance without bugs and crashings

The Bad
☹Currently lacks on content, which is understandable
☹No online multiplayer, even though it MIGHT happen

Worth Noting
  • A reminder once again, the game is an Early Access title, which means it's a work in progress and isn't finished yet.

  • The game has a local co-op mode and there's a chance that the game might receive online multiplayer update later on. As the developers stated: "Online multiplayer is a possibility, but if your purchase depends on that feature we recommend you wait."

The Verdict: "Worth supporting"
