State of the Game: 2014

Hi Tomies,

WrongThinker here. For those who don't know, I'm one of the designers on TOME: Immortal Arena. This year, I get the privilege of getting to give the State of the Game report to all of you, so that you have a sense of where we're going with things in the future and what our priorities are.

7 v 7
Let's start with our 7 v 7 map! There was a lot of excitement around 7 v 7, both internally and externally. However, the vast majority of you guys and gals made it very clear that you would rather we focus on making the 3 v 3 and 5 v 5 experiences the best they can possibly be before focusing on 7 v 7.

We hear you loud and clear. And so, while 7 v 7 is still something we're very excited about, we're putting it on the back-burner while we focus on other things. What other things, you may ask? Let's have a look...

Reducing Player Toxicity
While you can never get rid of all the trolls, the TOME team remains dedicated to promoting a positive, friendly community. It's much more fun to play with friendly people than jerks and we know it.

We're already really impressed with the quality of player that has come to TOME, but we want to make sure that toxic players are brought to our attention as quickly as possible so that we can do something about it. One way in which we'll be doing this is by improving our reporting system to include new options to call out AFKs and Leavers. This will help us pin-point toxic users and act accordingly far more quickly. Expect this, and other efforts, soon.

Guardians and Skins
Now that the game is out, we're returning much of our focus to content creation. This means: Guardians and Skins! Once the pipelines get up to full steam again (which hopefully won't take too long after the holidays), you'll be getting a more steady stream of both new Guardians and Skins.

Of course, first up will be our fantastic new Pusher from the Death Domain: Lord Ravanth. We're super excited about this guy. He'll not only feel wonderfully distinct from the rest of the cast, but we're always trying to push the visual bar and I personally think Ravanth will be a show-stopper.

And what comes after Ravanth, you may ask? Except a new Guardian from the Creation Domain to enter the Arena. The truly observant may even be able to figure out their role...

When it comes to Skins, we're determined to maintain a very high quality bar. When we release a Skin, we don't want it to be just "the green version" of a character you already have. We want each Skin to look awesome and unique. You'll get to see more of what I'm talking about soon.

In fact, we'll have more details for you early next year, both on the above Guardians and upcoming Skins.

Balance
Though we've already done a little balance, we will be doing it doing it much more regularly starting next year. What are we going to balance? Anything and everything. Guardians, Relics, Blessings, and Items. We know the game needs it. Numeric and mechanical changes will be ongoing to ensure our Guardians are not only balanced, but fun to play as, with, and against.

A lot of things go into deciding who/what to change and how to change it. One important factor is win rates, another important factor is you! We read your feedback and watch your streams and Youtube videos to see which Guardians, Relics, Blessings, and Items are providing you fun and which are not.

We don't look at these things in isolation, we look at them together to form a complete picture of where changes need to occur.

Items
One of the big changes we put in to the recent balance patch was a change to the way Items provide their bonuses. Now, our Base Items provide a more significant stat bonus and our Tier 2 Items only provide a mechanical bonus.

Why did we do this? When stat bonuses were super-small on Base Items, Base Items didn't really have meaning (so, half of your purchases we're near-meaningless). It also meant that you would almost never NOT upgrade to a Tier 2 item, after you had your first Base Item. Now, with Base Item purchases being more meaningful, it not only feels better to purchase a Base Item, but you actually have more options about what you can do after purchasing your first Base Item.

Perhaps most importantly, this change is a stepping stone to something bigger. Since the value of a Tier 2 Item is not longer divided between the Item's mechanical bonus and it's stat bonus, we can make those mechanical bonuses a little more interesting.

Right now, we're aggressively pursuing a massive revamp on the Item content we have in our game. We will be replacing many items with more interesting ones and we're introducing a fantastic new mechanic which will ensure that you'll never run out of things to spend gold on again! Right now I have to be a bit of a tease, but I greatly look forward to talking about details sooner rather than later.

2014 Signing-Off
It's been a hell of a year. We've gone from a closed beta, to a wide beta, to a full-on Steam release. We're really proud of what we've accomplished, but we're not about to merely high-five and retire. TOME can be a better game and, with your help, we're going to make it a better game!

We'd be honored if you'll take that journey with us.

About This Game

Welcome to the arena, Harbinger. TOME is a brawler MOBA built for non-stop action. Heed the call of The Mediator by choosing a Guardian from one of the six domains: Creation, Death, Water, Air, Earth, or Fire. Tired of waiting for the fun to begin? In TOME the excitement starts at level one.

Join the fight at the seat of the Mediator in the Coliseum (3v3). Conquer the wilds and take on the Behemoth in Sanctuary (5v5). Explore a new take on MOBA gameplay in an upcoming 7v7 map.

What makes TOME different?

TLDR:
  • Fan of MOBAs but don't want to put that much time into a match? Play this.
  • Love the combat in MOBAs but annoyed by farming? Play this.
  • New to MOBAs? Play this.

This game is a very simplified version of the more common mobas out there: DotA and LoL. Gameplay in this particular moba is focused more in pvp combat than pve combat. You're encouraged to stay in lane as your health regenerates as long as you haven't been hit by an enemy Guardian. Plus, you get gold for simply being in lane.

As far as items go, you'll find that there's really only one set, maybe 2 different sets to use on each character for their best playstyle. Items are very basic, compared to other mobas options.

This is a great game if you play it the way you're supposed to: rush into the enemies face and teambattle throughout the short burst of time you get per match.

Fun game, however people who play this more than other games will get "blessings" and other perks that make it a little unbalanced if you go against a team who has tons of them and you have none. However, they did just recently patch matchmaking which may have fixed this issue.

7/10 - Worth a try, but not a keeper if you're into more detailed & tactical gameplay of other moba's

I have been playing MOBAs since dota was nothing more than a WC3 map and now at the age of 29 I have to say, Tome is just a breath of fresh air!

Short, compact games, action packed, very little downtime and no snowballing heroes. Give it a whirl, you really dont need to spend a penny to have a good time.

Khar is probably the most fun I've had on my PC all year!

TOME is a frantic MOBA that keeps you on the edge of your seat at all times. I have played this game for five hours now, but I feel skilled in the game and I'm having fun experimenting with new heros. The mechanics are solid and the graphics are great. It has a 3v3, 5v5, and the upcoming 7v7, which will definitely the spotlight of the game that I'm personally very excited for. If they keep updating the game, this may be one of my favorites.

Tome is one of those games that people will either love or hate on their first try. It's not a hard game or complex but simple and to the point. Its fast paced and oddly addictive in nature. Unlike other Mobas, you can stay in the action longer by healing in lane and buying items there too. Granted, there isn't much room for "builds" as in other Mobas due to a 4 item limit. However, blessing and artifacts that you can earn in game can counter this but some of the better ones take some serious dedication to obtain. Also, the small rodster and perhaps lack of interesting characters might throw players off as well but alas, the game does what it does best, the action. If you want fast pace Moba action then pick this game up and try a few matches.

FYI: Matchmakeing might be the lacking point of this game. 5 on 5 matches are rare to get into and some people get loading match issues but these are being looked at and worked on as we speak.

If you want some advice on gameplay or other things about the game, comment this review and I'll give you my best answer!

Guys, give this game a break its just been recently released, it doesn't even exceed 30 characters.
Well this game is not Dota 2 Quality, your best moba game that exist in gaming world. Tome: Immortal Arena is STUPIDLY SIMPLE, but somehow has a taste of originality.

I repeat, it's ridicilously simple. You don't have to level your ability skills, there is no mana cost, "minion" death gives gold to everyone in AoE, (exactly. no lasthits) and the heroes have only 4 empty slots of items, without any recipes. You buy a 500 Gold item, you dish another 500 to upgrade it, its done. Its maxxed out.

Even people who never played a moba will be able to master this game in a day once they get in touch. I started kicking ♥♥♥ less than 30 minutes, thanks to more than 700 hours of playing dota 2.

Give it a try, its not that bad.

I'm a player, with kinda long MOBA history. I've played Dota, the W3 mod on battlenet, I've played LoL for quite some time, also tried Dota 2, played SMITE since the day it came to open beta, I still play Magicka Wizard Wars time to time, tried STRIFE, but must fun I had with Dawngate, but since it went down I was looking for some new, original moba for me, because I'm getting tired of the same old mechanics. TOME is really something completely diffirent, you don't really need to care that much about farming the minions, you don't need to be so stressed on your lane and be watching all over the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ map. Why? Because its fast, its really fast! Its all about the action, about the actual PvP and theres a ♥♥♥♥load of that! Things are just happening to quickly to be overthinking everything, you need to think fast and you need to press all your buttons fast! Some people say:„If there is no mana, why won't you just spam your spells again and again?" Well, because there still is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ CD and believe me, it is really pain in the ♥♥♥ if you've got a CD when you need it, because you miss-used your spell earlier... Would I recommend this game? Yes, yes I would! To who? To everyone! Its always fun to have a game of TOME and because of how fast it is, it is quite user friendly and there is no situation like: „I would love to have a game of (Inser name of your casual MOBA), but I just have like 30 minutes, I don't know how long the game will last. Well, when it comes to TOME, you can do 2 games in 30 minutes and have a ton of fun. 10/10

I played this game for -> 120+ HOURS <- . and here's what I can say :

1) Matchmaking are completely random, you find only beginners that make you mad and hate the game.
2) I understand that the game is fairly new, but most of the guardians are unbalanced.
3) graphics and pictures are not the best.
4) the rankings show only who s farm more and not who is really good .
5) The purchase of all-guardian-pack disadvantage a lot f2p players.
6) I often have problems to connect (errors and dc).
7) Very few players , playing three or four games in a row you get always the same players..
8) Premade teams 99% of time wins, moving away from the game casual players and beginners.

I like MOBA's, I've played most of them. I'm not much good at any of them, and i've not got the patience or time to play one map for 30-40 minutes at a time. TOME distills all that is good about MOBA's, makes it accessible, and makes it purely fun. The only thing that is missing is more 'strategy' and choice regarding builds and items. For me, it rarely makes more sense to choose my own item than to just auto-buy, and that to me is a miss. I used to love experiementing with different builds with different heroes in both DoTA and LoL. I hope this game gets some traction and a decent player-base as I really enjoy playing it and would really like to see it do well.

I am generally not a big fan of mobas. I can count on one hand the number of mobas I have enjoyed compared to the dozens and dozens of Mobas out there. Thats why I was surprised to find that I enjoyed TOME a bit (or alot compared to most other mobas) I dont know why I did, as TOME does not set itself apart from other mobas that much (at least not in the way SMITE or Awesomenauts does). TOME feels more fast paced than other popular mobas, like DOTA or Leauge of Legends. I admittedly am not a moba expert, however I would reccomend you to try this one. You just might find that you like it.
