Update notes — February 27

Hi everyone,

The first post-release update for 'Caribbean!' is coming today. A little clarification: right now we're focusing on things the community considered the most critical for our game.

Update notes:

- The classic M&B troop control system was combined with our new order system. You can either control troop types with hotkeys or give out orders for selected troops with the mouse.
- Returned old loot system. Loot won't be accessible in as large amounts as before, but players will be able to lay their hands on a set of old boots and hats from defeated bandits.
- Changed player icon on the tactical map, now the player is marked as an arrow which depends on player's view direction.
- Dramatically decreased ramming damage which previously could cause flagship's sinking upon boarding.
- Added new siege location.
- Added quick-access button for player's 'Storage' in a town if he has any property there.
- Bartender in the tavern now gives a hint on where you can find companions.
- Removed additional damage to player's crew during boarding which could lead to illogical loss of sailors.
- Fixed a bug which caused loss in boarding if the player had low HP even after he won the fight.
- Fixed a bug which caused 'NO_STRING' messages to appear in the shipwright's menu if a shipyard didn't have ships for sale.

We'll keep working on two directions: fixing the most unpleasant bugs and filling the game with new content as well as more diverse gameplay.

Status update #10

Hi everyone,

Let's discuss something. First of all, we want to draw attention to the fact that 'Caribbean!' does not contain the words "Mount & Blade" in its title. And there's a reason for that — mainly because our game is not a continuation in Mount & Blade series. Yes, some traditional features known to M&B fans are not in the game, but at the same time we added a lot of new things which were never before seen in those games.

Sure, a good portion of negative reviews is justifiable. But is our game that bad? We'd like to think it's not. In any case we'll do our best to change your mind with an upcoming set of updates in the near future.

Right now we're working on combining the classic troop control system from Warband and WFaS with our new RTS-like system.

The other thing we're focusing on is fixing logical errors in naval battles and boarding. For the most part those aren't programming bugs, but some gamedesign decisions that turned out to be not quite obvious.

We'll also be adding some new locations into the game. This might be our main shortcoming — the game lacks new places, and feels like there's a shortage of space. Additional locations should help fix this problem.

Special thanks to everyone who didn't resort to throwing hate grenades into our bunker. The work on the game continues, stay tuned for the news.

關於此遊戲

'Caribbean!' is a blend of economic strategy and open-world RPG, set in the pirate era of XVII Century Caribbean. The game is based on the significantly improved Mount & Blade: Warband engine.

'Caribbean!' lets players decide their own role and create their own adventure.

Those who crave for battles in jungles, raids on rich cities and capturing enemy ships can choose the path of a pirate and a mercenary who will rise to the top, with the help of his own sword.

Those who aren't afraid of the words 'financial planning' may take pleasure in making great deals and expanding their enterprise by choosing the path of a merchant and businessman. Power and wealth can be achieved whichever path you choose.

Of course, if you're tired of fighting and boarding enemy ships, you can always invest your collected savings in good real estate. Or do it the other way around — sell all of your industry, acquire a fine brig and become a pirate.

Features:

  • Naval battles with controllable ships and boarding fights.
  • Building and management of commercial property in towns.
  • Detailed crew and fleet management.
  • Rank progression system for military and business options.
  • Advanced order and control system for armies in land battles.
  • Mysterious and engaging storyline.

This is, first off: Not mount and Blade at sea. And in a way, this is kind of a good thing!

the personal combat is still the same, and firearms are proving a bit more accurate than they used too, as well as not being as effective when grouped into a solid wall of shot (A GODSEND FOR HORSEMEN LIKE ME)

Naval combat is really challenging, but so satisfying when you sink an enemy vessel, as it feels like you really had to work for it.

The only sour grapes I've got right now is that the new village-interaction system isn't entirely explained so some elements are still lost to me, but I'm starting to get the hang of them!

I really hope they eventually get multiplayer for this title, because as everyone knows, piracy and high seas adventure are better when shared with friends!

I've played for about 3 hours so far, and I find the game to be pretty fun. I can see where it does feel like an unfinished shell though, so if you're looking for a game the likes of Sea Dogs or Sid Meier's Pirates!, Carribean! is not there yet. That said, I do recommend the game becuase I consider it a diamond in the rough, and with support from the players I can see this becoming a fantastic game.

First off I will state that the only M&B title I have played is the vanilla original. Ok so that said I would say that this IS NOT MOUNT AND BLADE. seriously, people really need to get that into their skulls. Yes it uses the M&B engine but if we called every game out there by w/e engine they ran.. well there would be so many Unreals, and CryEngine and what have yous.

Now that outta the way lets look at what the game is: A caribbean based sandbox rpg with pirates. Does that make it similar to the other 100 titles about pirates? Sure. Does that make it a clone or ripoff? Only if every MMO in existance is just a shameless rip-off of adventure quest. (don't know what that is then your not a gamer) Sure I could point to any number of items in game and claim its just like x title.. its pirates and ships.. only so much you can do with that ya know? That would be unfair to the devs and title though as the game is actually quite good on its own right.

So lets cover graphics: Its Mount and Blades engine.. you kinda know what your getting there, its not PotBS or Naval Action but they are solid graphics for the engine. Most machines will have little to no issue running the game at optimal settings.

Gameplay: Much like Mount and Blade you start on the map a lone element in a world of politics and war. What you do from there is up to you.. there is no tutorial (outside the little quest chain which more or less shows you the games aspects) there is no hand holding. Its a sandbox rpg... in RL your not likely to get someone saying go over there and buy this item and sell it over here for money... figure it out on your own. IMO games cater to the "I don't wanna think, I just want to feel epic for no work" crowd anyway, its nice to have a title that doesn't. Controls are basic, but again using the M&B engine thats to be expected. Honestly there is more to this engines controls than alot of much larger titles. Few games offer directional attacks AND blocks. And most that do require a neural interface to use worth a crap.
The beauty of this game lies in its simplicity and openess. You can work for a world power bringing ulitimate victory to your chosen nation, or create your own empire that spans the caribbean, its your call. You are not forced to trade or fight or build or anything else really unless thats what you want to do. Even the combat you can't escape (pirates and the like) can be left to the computer to handle, admittedly its rather bad at it, but thats the price you pay for the conveinence. The point is you can do it all or only what you choose thats the point of a sandbox game.

Bugs: I haven't seen any yet, but thats not to say there aren't any.

Crashes: None sofar.

All in all an enjoyable game for people who don't mind putting forth the effort to learn the game instead of demanding it be spoon fed to them. If you want something to goof off in when your not in the mood for mulitplayer games grab this. If your wanting to be spoon fed a trite story about how your the greatest hero in the world and its up to you to save the world, or any other such feel great being a god among men nonsense, this is not your game. Its a good single player game for old school gamers who think games SHOULD be challenging and not just because of how many buttons you have to mash at specific times.

I liked it a lot, but has some problems the worst one is that the game is being laggy a lot espicially when entering a city or engaging a naval battle.
another problem is when engaging the enemy ships, the ships spawns far away takes like 2 min to have the ability to fire the ship or board it!
finally, I loved the game! :))

Something that needs adressing (And really shouldn't). This IS NOT MOUNT & BLADE. This is Carribean, it is neither designed to be another Mount & Blade, nor is it made by the same company. So in the words of the developers, stop throwing your hate grenades into their bunker for believing this is something it's not.

Now, this game is after playing better than I thought. The ship to ship fighting isn't the greatest, hopefully they'll redo it at some point, but it gets the job done. There is still some satisfaction after your fleet utterly whoops a superior foe.
Boarding is interesting, having musketeers shooting down from the crows nest while troops on both sides are swinging over to the other ships. And they're removing the "You lost more sailors than you thought" deal after you win a boarding which was quite frusterating when your 60+ British Marines are fighting six common thieves without taking a casualty, only to leave the battle to find you lost twenty sailors.

The land battles, well, they're very close to Mount & Blade as they do share the same engine, however now prior to the battle you can issue orders to your troops and set them up how you want them. Very convenient once you figure out how to use it. And while the game is good, it still has more than its fare share of bugs. I think this should still be an early access title, but so far the developers have done a good job of adressing the most critial issues with promises of additional features coming later on. (And what game in the past eight years has had a perfect release?)

However... Some things are really hard to ignore, for example when climbing up rigging, or increasing the speed of naval battles, your charachter/ship look like they're having siezures, and every once and awhile the ship will become uncontrollable at X3 speed, randomly sailing in circles. Another thing is the travel speed, while its nice not taking forever to get somewhere, land and naval travel speed is the same, and way to fast (10.0 average). You can chase someone with .5 less speed than you from one side of the map to the other, and then halfway back and its quite frusterating.

Despite its bugs, lack of features (Or too many features, as a bug is just an unexpected one after all) it's still quite good so far. If you like pirates, naval combat, 16-early 18th century warfare then pick this up. (On sale preferably. Getting things cheap is the second best way to get things)

I have been playing this game for a while now. I fully understand the game has meany bugs and other nasty glitches, but i have not seen any yet besides some compainion script errors. This game is for those who both enjoy pirate themed games and the mount and blade series. If you enjoy both and can be optimistic, than i highly recommend purchasing and playing this game. overall, i would give it an 8/10 so far. that might increase with future updates and new content. the game may seem incomplete and it is, but the developers are hard at work to improve the game based on reviews like this one. The game is already quite emmersive and is full of some enjoyable content. I look towards the future to see what they come up with next.

There are some issues, but the dev's seem to be listening to the community about what we want, I fully recommend this game if you want a mount and blade game set in the 1700s era or if you like pirates. The navel combat is not great, but the boarding and rest of the combat has a great feel, the risk reward of the game really brings a fun challenge,

However the game is not done and I personly think the devs should not have realeased it, this belongs in early access, I guess they just needed more money/attention. Its all fine in my book if they actually update and bring features to the game. So far this looks to be the case.

I do not think this is a very entertaining game, but I realy lke it. Please hear me out, I realy like it for it's potential. This is still relatively early, and while it is officialy released there is still a lot of work being done to it. It does get a lot of negative reviews for the current state of things, but I don't feel that this is a finished product and should be treated as such. There are updates being made relatively frequently and I for one, love seeing the changes as they happen. A good game is not made in a hearbeat and I am impressed by how much input the developers take from the community. Big kudos for that.

If you are like me and like to see a game take shape over time then this is pretty much the thing for you. If you want to go straight to a finished product, then maybe wait a while longer. Then again, just my opinion. Feel free to make up your own mind. Not like I can stop you anyway.

I have M&B and M&B: Warband so of course this game seemed interesting. I also love ships from this period and have always wanted one so this game was a no brainer. It is NOT M&B, some of the missing components (like multi-player) are supposed to come out later and the latest update appears to fix the bug where I was losing my flagship after winning a boarding action. All in all, if you like M&B's style then you will like Caribbean! after you get used to it not being M&B. If Mount & Blade looked interesting but lacked guns then this is the game for you I think!

Wanted as f*** from M&B Fans,
it takes you to caribbean scene
PROS:
-very beautiful ambientation
-you can board enemy fleet!
-can steal enemy boats and then sell them/use them
-rich siege scene
-CAN BE A PIRATE YARRRRR
-the game has just got launched and has a rich content
-balanced factor land army/sea units
-the enterprises now have a decent production,so you can easily make money and are not so hard to buy
and most important:

-YOU CAN SHOOT CIVILIANS IN THE INN , 10/10 gg

LACKS:
-NO MULTIPLAYER
-NO CUSTOM BATTLES
-Slow Loading
-Heavy scene, can cause lags
-firing with ranged weapons can cause lags due to the smoke
-can't attack while jumping
-poor face costumization of your character face
-poor strategic map, preferred a traditional M&B map based on caribbeans
-NOT visitable cities (only inn and fort maybe)
-quite hard recruiting ( mercenaries cost a lot)
-often freezing of the game in strategic map
-sailors are too expensive to train, boarding a boat will require you train new sailors for replacing them
-a lot of bugs about stairs (major) and other stuff
-too simple and basic control panel for troops in land battles, preferred a M&B warband Napoleonic wars one.
-bugs about swinging after jumping

*NEEDS A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT OF UPDATES
but, it's a nice idea and i'd like to see this patched and with a lot of new things added (especially multiplayer).
just don't hate that much on the developers, i hope they'll keep it up the good work they're doing.

WAITING A NEW PATCH ASAP!

It was quite glitchy, arguably unfinished at release. But the first patch has already fixed the largest bugs. The game at release was good at best, but it is a great concept and is gradually becoming a great game as it is patched. I would recommend giving it a chance because the developers are listening to reviews and fixing the most common issues.

The Good
Naval Pirate combat is really fun
Ground combat is ok
Graphics are passable, detail on a few items is good
weapons are mostly realstic (have found a game yet that knows how shields are actually used in combat)

-- patch! -- Update, they just fixed looting at the end of the battle you get a loot popup screen to which you can choose items for your inventory.

The Bad
--- FIXED --- Cant keep items dropped by enemies, you get to use them in that area but dont get to keep them making investing in the inventory skill mostly worthless (I think this isnt intended) --- FIXED ---
AI can be a little buggy in places
Gold gain vs Expenses is too high atm
Swivel guns on ships dont seem to exist

The Ugly
Crash to desktop
Unclear gameplay elements you sometimes at a loss to find out how to achive your objectives
Economy needs blancing better
My save game was corrupted ingame - my ships have 2130/250 crew, each battle is now a massive fight for both sides even if the other side has only 45/45, I am paying huge wages and my ships value is non-existant have a 5th libe ship woth only 1000 riealas. had to restart.
have 2 end game ships, they have no sell value fully repaired, something is buggy with the buy/sell values

It will be good, once a few patches Fix glareing issue and a few more of the gameplay elements are made clearer. I wish thier was a Mixed instead of a yes/no this Game is a wait and see.

I'm gonna keep it short and sweet. Y'all need to quit ♥♥♥♥♥ing. It's not a M&B game as many many people have stated. It's a standalone built on the engine that series used. Fantastic if you're not going to "Hit uninstall button because no multiplayer" as I actually saw someone post.
