“Hello everyone,

'Caribbean!' is currently in the alpha state and has reached the stage where it could really use some of the players' feedback.

The game has its basic features already in, and content-wise (weapons, armor, locations, sounds) we're 70% done. What we're mostly planning to do from this point is to build upon and improve what we already have with regular updates and your help.

You might be put off by the current simple economic system, visually incomplete locations and balance problems — these parts of the game will be reworked during the Early Access stage.

Check out the official forum and the store page below for current and planned features.

The price is lowered during the early access stage, all future updates come for free. Full version release is planned for Autumn 2014.”

Status update #4

Hi everyone,

Since the last status update we've focused on these three elements: adding new boarding locations with frigate, developing strategic control for land battles and content's optimization.

1. Frigate.

Frigates are pretty big ships, ancestors of cruisers. For boarding fights with frigates we added a multideck element, though in a simpler form, to really highlight the size of a new ship. We intentionally removed its more realistically looking version and an access to the captain's cabin, so that it wouldn't hurt fights dynamic.

By the way, we noticed that when you go for boarding from larger ships, there can sometimes be jamming near the jump ropes. We did some changes in AI, so this situation should get better.

2. Strategic control in land battles.

This is a pretty ambitious task we are still working on. However, we'll add the first working version in the upcoming update.

The general idea is to make the player a commander and let him control his army. It begs comparison with Total War series, but it's important to keep in mind one distinct difference: in TW players hire full troops, when in M&B series players work with individual units. This puts some restrictions on functioning of AI, army formations and even pathfinding. We'll see what we'll end up with, but for now land battles seem to have become a bit more fun.

3. Content optimization.

Though it's more of a content cleanup. During the development the game got an incredible amount of unused scripts, textures, models, locations and so on. Much of this content was left from 'With Fire & Sword', that we had to give up for gamedesign reasons. Some things we were just too afraid to touch, as Mount & Blade engine could always need them to work properly.

It's a very dull job that can't be delayed any longer. City screen loading times and some cases of game crashes clearly show the engine reached its limit. So for the upcoming update we won't be really focusing on new content, but will instead remove the old one.

That's it for now. We hope the update arrives pretty soon, it's very interesting to hear your opinion on new land battles.

Status update #3

Hi everyone,

We'd like to tell you what we're currently working on and what we want to include in the next update.

First, we want to finish a new working version of land battles. We figured what the game was missing is RTS elements because 'Caribbean!' is no longer a game about feudal fights of knights and peasants. Creating formations for infantry and cavalry that players will be able to control with handy interface is our main goal for the next two weeks.

The next on the agenda is finishing the city screen. As we already mentioned, what you currently see in the game is a placeholder. The end result should be pretty and intuitive. Also, if possible, with shorter load times too.

Finally, we're planning to add one more boarding location, for ships of higher ranks.

About fixing the bugs. We understand that you want them gone as soon as possible but we can't promise that just yet. Until the game's foundations are complete we don't really want to resort to full-on bugfixing. In that case we run the risk of delaying the development for a few more months. Nevertheless, we'll try to deal with the following problems first:

- Massive damage caused by ship ramming.

- Jamming on the deck at the big ship / small ship boarding location.

- Spontaneous changes in ships HP in sea battles.

- OP grenades and troops that use them.

We may add something else to the list, but please note that some of these problems won't be easy to resolve and will take more time than the other.

Stay tuned for the updates and keep the comments coming. Even if we don't reply to all of them, we certainly do our best to read through all feedback.

關於此遊戲

'Caribbean!' is a sandbox pirate RPG that blends the most engaging melee and firearms combat with naval battles, detailed crew management and the deep atmosphere of the pirate era.

Set in XVII century’s Caribbean region, whose unspeakable riches drew many European powers and pirates into the great fight, the game lets players decide their own role and create their own pirate adventure.

'Caribbean!' is based on Mount & Blade: Warband engine.

What's already in the game:

  • Naval battles with controllable ships. There are several types of damage that ships can deal and take; Ships can lose sails and be caught on fire.
  • Players can purchase unique upgrades for their ships, like a more solid hull, fire protection, damage reduction for their crew and a greater chance to set enemy ships on fire and so on.
  • Ability to improve ship artillery and ship's crew.
  • A set of special perks available for player's character.

Plans for the near future:

  • Battle planning with squad management.
  • Improved boarding system with new locations.
  • New production and trading system.
  • Adding fortress and siege artillery for city assaults.

Quite disappointed, I must say.

As a long time modder and player of Mount & Blade since its first betas many years ago, I'd have expected a full dev team to add a whole lot more "piratey" and overall new features in this "standalone game", but unfortunately, currently it mainly feels like With Fire And Sword in the Carribean. The gear is practically the same (even some M&B pirate mods offered a greater variety of dress, including pirates with hooks and wooden legs and parrots on their shoulders) and you even get "steppe horses" in the Caribbean. C'mon guys, at least rename them...

Ship combat is clunky, the camera control in ship combat is frustratingly useless, getting the view from one side of the ship to the other takes ages and game controls settings offer no settings for ship combat. It tries to function like Sid Meier's Pirates! sea battles did, you know, tiny ships circling, exchanging cannon fire, but delivers terribly. Personally it also bothered me that there's no option to have non-flagship fully manned own fleet ships board enemy ships, and you also can't transfer men from fully manned ships to your depleted flagshipship during a battle, so if you lost a lot of men in the first boarding, you're pretty screwed for subsequent ones, while a couple fully loaded allied ships circle around. Cannon range is also terribly silly. Most of the sea-battle time you're out of range, but as soon as you're in range, particularly for manpower-destroying grapeshot, you get boarded (at a distance of twice the length of your ship???).

Fights on shipdeck are ok, but there is a lot of pathfiding issues, guys getitng stuck, so you have to deliver a mercy shot to some unfortunate stuck enemy, to end the battle, if you can find him. And going overboard means drowning even if you're lightly dressed. The only thing that works fine are the land battles, which are your basic, unchanged Mount & Blade fights.

The pirate game I compare this to and which I most enjoyed so far, was the New Horizons mod for Pirates Of The Carribean game. http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-horizons
In spite of its age, it offers excellent first and third person sea battles, cannon aiming, different types of cannons, decent shipdeck swordfights (M&B engine seems better for these, to be honest), good storylines and a much more convincing Carribean look and atmosphere than this game here. And it's completely free (if you can find the original POTC game anywhere still).

Unless the 30% this game claims is still unfinished in its Early Access stage dramatically improves the atmosphere, sea battles, fights, adds some unique new features that we haven't played to death in Mount & Blade already, and generally makes it more "Arrrrr! Ye scurvy dogs!", I honesly cannot recommend it, even though I would love to, as pirate games are generally a fun thing.

It's definitely NOT worth the €14.99 I could have spent on a few satisfying pints of ale instead.

If you want this sort of gameplay, buy Mount & Blade: Warband instead and try out dozens of excellent FREE mods for it. Much better value.

P.S.
Several people complained about game crashes. I have to say that I haven't experienced a single one in all my playtime so far. Either I have been very lucky or missed some crashing bugs, or it could be that their systems are causing the crashing as M&B games tend to be very RAM heavy.

For only playing this for a few hours, I can say that this can be a promising succesful Pirate RPG we've all been waiting for. There is no good Pirate mod out there so this is the best that can come close to something that I'd be happy with. Get this game and help the developers!

One of the new game About central America in 1655 , with Mount blade engine (With fire and sword engine)

I started this game , textures looks better than in warband they are better , i had battle on sea where i controled ship and i fired plenty of cannon balls on enemy, then i visited spanish town they took me to prison (random quest) and i had to run away

On field i was suprised , there was cannon , i controled cannon and i fired on enemy (no cannon balls but small balls for near enemy like in napoleonic wars)

This game is good and its alpha only. Only problems which i met were fast recruited men and i could fire from cannon in battle when they killed me

Just buy and try it! :)
