Beta update (June 26)

Hi everyone,

New beta update 1.055 is now available. To try it out you’ll need to choose ‘Caribbean!’ in your Games library, click on ‘Properties’, go to ‘Betas’ tab, and then select ‘Public beta’. After this Steam should update your game.

Update notes:

New:

- Added light sources for ships' lower decks on boarding locations.

- Contextual menu for giving orders to the player’s governors. The menu appears upon clicking RMB on a party or a town on the global map:

When you right-click on one of your towns, you’ll be able to select one of your governors to rule the selected town. Currently ruling governor won’t be shown in the list. It’s also possible to assign your character as that town’s governor.

When you click on an enemy town, you’ll be able to give an attack order to one of your governors, or all your governors at once.

When your governor receives an attack order, he won’t be distracted by any other events happening nearby, including pursuits of superior enemy troops.

When you right-lick on enemy troops, you’ll also be able to assign an attack order to one of your governors. In that case, both enemy army and your governor’s army should be within player’s sight. If there are no allied governors in sight, you’ll see the standard contextual menu.

Fixed:

- Ship of the Line’s cannons could damage the ship itself.

- Changes in relationships with factions after naval battles.

- Incorrect banners for allied governors’ troops.

- Renaming of the player’s governors.

UPDATE:

- Added artillery and destruction system for land sieges.

- Added ability to give attack orders through dialogues with governors.

- Sound files were recoded into different format.

'Caribbean!' is a blend of economic strategy and open-world RPG, set in the pirate era of XVII Century Caribbean. The game is based on the significantly improved Mount & Blade: Warband engine.

'Caribbean!' lets players decide their own role and create their own adventure.

Those who crave for battles in jungles, raids on rich cities and capturing enemy ships can choose the path of a pirate and a mercenary who will rise to the top, with the help of his own sword.

Those who aren't afraid of the words 'financial planning' may take pleasure in making great deals and expanding their enterprise by choosing the path of a merchant and businessman. Power and wealth can be achieved whichever path you choose.

Of course, if you're tired of fighting and boarding enemy ships, you can always invest your collected savings in good real estate. Or do it the other way around — sell all of your industry, acquire a fine brig and become a pirate.

Features:

  • Naval battles with controllable ships and boarding fights.
  • Building and management of commercial property in towns.
  • Detailed crew and fleet management.
  • Rank progression system for military and business options.
  • Advanced order and control system for armies in land battles.
  • Mysterious and engaging storyline.

I am a massive fan of the Mount & Blade series, and naval action games in general. So when this game was announced, it had my attention, big time! The idea of sailing those old ships-of-the-line accross vast oceans, and traipsing through thick jungles in the Amazon, and heading in and walking around and taking in the sights of such famous carribean ports as, Tortuga, Panama, Port Royal, and checking out the drunken sailor nightlife in a variety of taverns, maybe do some wenching, etc... EXCITING! All of this and more promises by an ambitous developer who was lucky enough to get the rights to an amazing engine (M&B)!

So... when I got it... WELL... it was only early-release alpha... you got to expect bare-bones to start with... Sailing was clunky and responds in a slightly contrived manner. The traveling map was only somewhat detailed, but offered navigation points, both small and large. The ports sights, were... NON-existent, they actually got rid of the immersive walk-about, and replaced it with a generic, one style fits all ports, unresponsive town map... and NO taverns, no wenching, basically minimal NPC interaction.

That's okay, though, that's just Alpha, Early Release right? They got a lot of feedback, overwhelming even... bring back the towns, the sights, the immersion, etc (so common in even the smallest of and oldest of M&B games (and mods).

So, we have official release coming now (in 2 days), and... everything is... about the same... except some areas are even more minimalized. DEVS say they will launch all the planned features later, after official release, that they will see how official release works, and get the bugs out, etc.

SERIOUSLY? What was the alpha and beta testing for, if not to get the base game bugs out? Of course it was a great way to get paid for doing... very little.

I've seen M&B (free) mods 10x more polished, and feature-filled than this "full game"... I am very dissapointed. The excuses are plenty, and the spin is abundant, but the polish and playability of the game is severely lacking for a standalone full game. I've rarely seen a company act with so little proffessionalism and plain-face justify their failures. You WILL get more game, more features, more optirmization, and better developer response from some of the amazing mods (and their teams), than from these people.

VERDICT:

My advice, save your money, and download some amazing free (M&B) mods with oceans more content and playability than this game. ... And maybe the DEVS will take note, and make good on the promised content, and make this worth... something...

RE-VERDICT? -

Since this game was released the devs have continued to work on this, as if it were an Early Access title... and the "updates" and "patches" seem to have really made numerous needed strives in optimization and feature enrichment. I am "replaying" the game and will be reworking my review accordingly - if needed.

The game is still in alpha phase, but it doesn't tell you that until you've already bought it. Graphics are so horribly optimized that even though it doesn't look any better than Mount & Blade: Warband, my computer can barely run it. Town menus are so broken that half of the game functions are inaccessible. As much as I like the idea, and as much as I love the Mount & Blade series, I cannot recommend this in good conscience.

This game has a truly wonderful premise, and when I got it i was very excited to play it. I thought: 'what could be better than Mount and Blade with ships and pirates?'. I was sadly mistaken. The game is only in alpha version, and is well on the way to being a good, if not great game. The only problem was that releases were continually pushed further and further back. Which is ok: I am more than patient enough to wait for a decent product. But now the company has just released a statement saying there will be one more update, and a few bug-fixing patches, and that is all that the game will get. This company has completely screwed all of its customers, because this game is far from ready to release. The graphics are still terrible, there is no storyline, items are broken and unexplained: it has only the bare bones of a game. That is why I will never recommend this game to anyone unless the company continues to update it. Not only will I not buy more early-releases, but I will never buy from this company again because I cannot condone them essentially stealing from their customers.

I suppose it's my fault that I got burned with this one, since I ignored the huge amounts of negative reviews and decided to give this game a shot anyways. Of course this glorified M&B mod was released right at the height of both my Warband and pirate (One Piece, Black Sails) addictions, as if they knew the time was just right to reel in one more sucker desperate for a fresh naval combat game. Considering the developers are utilising such a tried-and-true engine, how bad could it be, right?

Well, for starters, it's clunky as all hell. The game makes very little effort to explain anything to you, apparently expecting you to already be familiar with the M&B controls. All well and good, since most of us probably are, except that they add a boatload (kek) of new concepts and leave you to sort them out for yourself. The most annoying issue I've had so far is trying to figure out how to operate the menus, specifically those related to trading goods and buying ships. Each screen is jumbled with numbers and data that probably won't make much initial sense.

Somehow, they made gameplay ripped almost completly from an existing title feel comparatively sluggish. The swashbuckling works, I guess, but it feels much more sloppy and unresponsive that what I've come to expect from any character that makes those familiar exaggerated grunting noises. Guns are handled with some degree of historical accuracy, I guess, since most require a significant reloading time. Ironically, this left me wanting to toss my flintlock aside for a good old-fashioned bow and arrows.

Naval battles are a complete joke; just hold down the spacebar and hope you sink the enemy first. There's probably more strategy once you get a bigger fleet, but even then, it's usually more fun and less risky to just pull up alongside your enemy and rally a boarding party. Of course, instead of using the convenient method of automatically obtaining the cargo from sunken vessels, you're required to turn around and touch overy single tiny crate with your hull, provided you don't want it to just drift uselessly. Missed a piece? Make another pass.

The worst part, for me at least, is how non-immersive the whole experience feels. Taverns are one-room log shacks crammed with idle nps you can't talk to, with the occasional merchant. Quests are boring and unimaginative; 'kill this many enemies, deliver this many units of cargo.' I don't give a damn about my allies, my crew, my ship, or, as hard as I tried, my own captain.

Initially, though, I still had hope. It's just gotten out of early access, maybe there were some unexpected kinks they need to work out, or features that got delayed for fine tuning. With their most recent announcement, though, the developers have stated, rather directly, in fact, than anyone who expects anything more out of this little project is kidding themselves. I didn't play in the early access, but apparently, those who did. as well as those who supported the kickstarter, were promised a massive assortment of features that have officially been canned, most notably multiplayer support.

In conclusion, my worst-case scenario turned out to be the right one: this is a shamless cash-grab from a gaggle of inexperienced, unprofessional modders. It doesn't really even feel right to call them developers. Maybe they got in over their heads with this. Fine! That's happened to all of us! We all know how it feels to overcommit to a project that's simply out of our league, and fail spectacularly. The difference is, anyone who has any scruples wouldn't ask hundreds of people to fund their little experiment, promising to develop specific content, unless they were positive of their ability to actually create said content.

To make an analogy, this feels like an ambitious young kid, fresh out of school, wanting to start up his own bakery. So he gets his friends, family, neighbors, his whole community to pitch in and help him fund a location of his own. Unfortunately, the most this boy has ever made in his life is some Krusteaz pancakes. But he was sure, so sure, that he could create great food if he really tried, that he promised all of his supporters as many delicious treats as they could eat for helping him out. When the time came, lo and behold, the product was far below expectations in quality, quantity, and variety. Two days later, the guy closes his bakery down. But, meh, no skin off his nose, right?

Are these modders out of their ♥♥♥♥ing minds? This game is a buggy, sloppy, tacky piece of worthless ♥♥♥♥. Please take the game back into alpha and actually ♥♥♥♥ING FINISH IT(or atleast get it to where it would pass for beta).

EDIT: I guess it's a little bit better now. However, there is no incentive to even begin playing, when you start off with a fleet and a fortune.
