Patch 1.20 - Changelog

With Patch 1.20 we introduce a number of improvements to the base game and Hearts of Stone, including a major HUD overhaul and additional menu options. We've also implemented a number of fixes like the missing interaction from chests in quest titled ‘Scavenger Hunt: Wolf School Gear’ and more! You'll find the full list of changes below:

IMPROVEMENTS

  • Adds book titled 'A Miraculous Guide to Gwent' which displays number of gwent cards missing from player's base-game collection and information on where to find them, thus facilitating completion of achievement titled Collect 'Em All. Tome in question can be obtained either from gwent playing scholar in Prologue or from merchant near St. Gregory's Bridge in Gildorf district of Novigrad.
  • Adds option to display herb names above available interactions.
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to enable enemy level upscaling. If foes are too easy to defeat due to level difference, upscaling will render them a challenge. Change will not affect experience point gain, loot, or quest rewards. Option can be enabled or disabled at any time, even during combat (however, Vitality/Essence of foes is then fully restored).
  • Adds option in Options/Gameplay to disable automatic drawing and sheathing of sword.
  • Increases incidence of, and thus chances of finding, several monster-based ingredients required for crafting high level alchemy formulae.
  • Improves Player Statistics panel, adding maneuverable Geralt model. Improves visuals in panel for better readability.
  • Adds new functionality to books and scrolls. When first collected, they can be read immediately using single button without need of navigating to Inventory panel. All found but not yet read books and scrolls are stored in Quest Items and Other categories. Once read, books and scrolls can be sold as their content is saved in Books section of Glossary.
  • Improves overall visuals in Character Development panel.
  • Improves Inventory whereby items are divided into additional subcategories within their grids: weapons and armor; oils, potions and bombs; quest items and others; food and equestrian gear; crafting and alchemy. Additionally, introduces redesign of tooltips enabling their resizing with single button. Also, item comparison is easier than ever given addition of summary of changes in stats.
  • Improves Inventory navigation when using gamepad. Slots are divided into sections and right stick can be used to jump between them.
  • Improves Crafting panel in merchant shops. Adds option to purchase missing diagram components directly from Crafting panel when talking to merchant, as well as clearer descriptions and option to resize item descriptions.
  • Introduces redesign of Repair panel in merchant shops. Adds single button enabling players to repair all equipped items.
  • Improves Remove Upgrade panel in merchant shops.
  • Improves Quick Access Menu whereby it can be accessed in one of two modes, with action either paused or slowed depending on button used.
  • Adds functionality whereby crossbow bolts can be switched via Quick Access Menu rather than being equipped from Inventory.
  • Adds counter for bombs and crossbow bolts to Quick Access Menu.
  • Improves region maps by adding pin filtering, more intuitive quest tracking, and a region overview for faster navigation.
  • Adds three new custom pins allowing players to mark areas for future reference.
  • Improves Adrenaline Bar which better displays number of stored Adrenaline Points and their status.
  • Improves display and behavior of Buffs, displayed in more intuitive manner showing time left, strength percentage, stacks, charges, or permanence where applicable. Buff icons now blink for approx. 10 seconds before expiration. For improved visibility, names and exact expiration times for all effects are only visible when Quick Access menu is active.
  • Changes icons for decoctions, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for oils, rendering them recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes gwent card icons in shops, rendering factions recognizable at first glance.
  • Changes icons for mutagens.
  • Adds feature whereby equipment exceeding player character level can be previewed on character.
  • Improves sorting in Journal whereby active quest tab is always open and tracked quest is at top of quest list.
  • Improves quest item visuals so that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine quest items are now tagged with blue and red exclamation points, respectively.

Everything a game should be, done by people that other developers should emulate.

Great, immersive story. Controls that take a bit of getting used to, but once you have them done it seems intuitive. So much content to do and explore you could spend well over a hundred hours.

I lost interest 10 minutes into the game after my first fight. It's a total and complete console port. Controls are awful and totally unfriendly to a mouse and keyboard. This game would make a great movie, but it's a poor PC game.

Very fun game to play. It has several storylines that take a while to complete. I also especially like the in game card game Gwent. Witcher 2 had a dice came that I didn't really care for, but I find myself getting addicted to Gwent and seeking out better cards for my deck in the game. Witcher 3 is definitely worth playing!

This video game is a true masterpiece.

The Witcher 3 offers the best storyline I've ever seen. You can decide anything, both minor and major things. All characters in game have their own story which is really awesome. Velen is a land that suffered war and gives you that real authentic touch of how medieval land looks like just like Novigrad which is just how one middle-age city looked like. Graphics are beautiful and honestly I haven't seen an RPG like it. After that you have epic side quests with amazing lore and seriously huge map to explore. By huge I mean the biggest map for 1 video game in history.

Then, when I entered the Skellige its like I entered another world. The authentic nord irish accent made it look like whole another universe which this game truly is. During game you have several romance options and you choose a girl which you will end up with which is something seirously amazing for a video game. Not to mention all those sex scenes.
To complete main storyline alone it takes around 50 hours while ending depends on you and your choices troughout whole game.

The soundtracks in this game are literally THE BEST. They are mostly made of polish folk music but there are also some Serbian (Oj Lazare, for instance) which are some of the best slavic musics. The only con in this game was that in free roam I didn't have the option to talk to the main characters but that was fixed in latest expansion which I really appreciate CDPR for, as I and many other customers requested it.

I won't be describing DLC's as this review should be dedicated to the base game. I really recommend this game to everyone, from RPG fans to those who never played an RPG game before.

You WILL enjoy this game and you must play it!

It was worth every cent, 10/10.

Note: At the time of this review I have completed every entry of the Witcher franchise, other than Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine for The Witcher 3. This review, to some extent, assumes you have played TW1 & TW2.

Overview
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is, objectively speaking, the best game I've ever played. It's everything a story driven/RPG focused gamer could ask for, and so much more. TW3 does a magnificent job concluding the franchise, but still finds a way to leave you rabidly hungry for more, despite its 140-150 hour runtime for a completionist like myself. To break down just what makes The Witcher 3 such an achievement within the gaming medium, let's look at its visuals/performance, gameplay/mechanics, and narrative, followed by my final thoughts.

Visuals/Performance
There's really no other way to put it, so I'll just say it. If you have a PC that can run this game, TW3 is the unsurpassed, most graphically proficient game ever made. It's simply blindingly beautiful in every category of aesthetic excellence imaginable. From the textures to the lighting, the character models to the open world design, and the particle effects to Geralts majestic hair, everything is pure visual perfection to a tee. The atmosphere that results from this is one of a believable world whose environments are constantly changing, and never fails to impress. Even now, after doing nearly everything in the base game over 136 hours of play, I am never not dazzled by the immersive world of TW3, and that's only from a graphical stand point. It also can't go without a quick mention that the music, ambiance, and voice acting is utterly phenomenal as well. Transitioning to my feelings on TW3's performance, I have to say I'm thoroughly pleased. I feared that, with my mid-ranged PC, I would get horrible performance even on medium settings, but I was entirely wrong. If you have a capable mid ranged gaming PC by today’s standards, you have nothing to fear. I attained 40-60fps at all times on my rig, and was able to run at high/ultra settings, excluding Nvidia Hairworks. I have also only experienced 4 crashes in my time so far, making for a crash every 35ish hours, which I'd say is acceptable. So ends my examination of The Witcher 3's graphical aptitude, and I can easily say it's the most impressive game ever made in this aspect.

Gameplay/Mechanics
There's so much to say here, so you'll have to forgive me for the many aspects of the gameplay I'll be leaving out. A great place to start however, is the role-playing element of The Witcher 3. I'm very happy to say it’s the best it’s ever been in the series to date. I was given great freedom to craft the personality and opinions of Geralt, namely making him the honorable, truthful, and cynical protector of the people he cares for that I've always wanted him to be. There are also many other ways to form his personality, making for immense replayablity of TW3 from a purely role-playing aspect. The next feature to mention is the combat. The controls can be hard to master at first, but once you've gotten used to a particular style, everything comes together wonderfully in a combination of sword slashes, dodges and pirouettes, Sign usage, and even a little use of projectile weaponry. Every factor of combat can be mixed and matched, resulting in a great variety of ways to play the game. More mechanics that can't go without a statement on my part are the leveling, witcher senses, crafting, and alchemy systems. Starting with the leveling system, CD Projekt Red has found the right balance of useful abilities and customization options, resulting in an exceptional feeling of self-improvement and worthwhile character development. Moving on to the witcher senses, they are a new addition to the gameplay that extends your immersion into truly being a Witcher, allowing you to use Geralts cat like senses to find otherwise unnoticeable anomalies wherever you go, mostly coming in handy when hunting down monsters. Lastly are the crafting and alchemy systems. As for the crafting, it's paramount to use in securing the game's best armors and weapons, so don't overlook it. With alchemy, alchemical items have been updated from the previous game in that they can now be used during combat. Each alchemical item you make whether potions, oils, or even bombs, has its own unique use, and can be replenished by meditating. There's a hoard of other gameplay features such as the seemingly endless quests and exploration, sailing, lore reading, combat dismemberment, and the splendid card game Gwent, but in order to keep this short, I'll summarize by saying that there is heaps to do within the world of The Witcher 3, and that all of it is worthwhile.

Narrative
What, truly, can be universally said about the dynamic narrative of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? Everyone will come away with different opinions and experiences, but I'll do my best to pin down definitive truths and give some thoughts on my personal experience with the games story. First off, I'll give a short, spoiler-free plot analysis. You, as Geralt of Rivia, have finally regained your memories since the first two games after suffering from Wild Hunt induced amnesia, and now remember the love of your life, Yennefer of Vengerberg. At the start of TW3 you have been on Yennefer's trail for 6 months, following your premature breakup with Triss Merigold. After a quick meetup with Yennefer early in the game, you discover that her and yours adopted daughter, Ciri, has "returned", sending Geralt on an epic journey to hunt down and save her from the Wild Hunt, who are now after her. Her tracks will take you through the war torn marshes of Velen, sprawling cities of Novigrad, and to the icy isles of Skellige, all the while not even knowing for certain if Ciri is dead or alive. Now, on with my opinions of the narrative. First things first, It's extremely emotionally involving and mentally taxing. The complex writing and genuine human emotion evoked by the realistic and often morally gray characters can be very hard to deal with without allowing your eyes to well up at a couple points in the game. In my review of The Witcher 2 I explained that I found the representation of human struggle lacking, but I got much more than I bargained for with this element in The Witcher 3. Another important aspect of the story are your choices, which often means attempting to choose a lesser of two evils, without any knowledge of the exact consequences of those decisions, causing you to weigh your options extremely carefully. There is also a vast amount of politics to handle, which presents choices that will form the future of the various kingdoms for generations to come. All of this culminates in a world that feels like it could function entirely autonomously from the players input, with you simply there to tip the scale at important moments, which has always been one of my favorite aspects of the Witcher franchise. All considered, The Witcher 3 offers a meticulously detailed, unparalleled story of human emotion and epic adventure, resulting in a narrative that I believe everyone must experience.

Final Thoughts
While I may have made this game seem flawless through this review, I'd like to state that it's not. It is filled with many minor annoyances and bugs, but they are just that, minor. They shrink away in the face of the absolute masterpiece that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt truly is. Despite feeling empty upon completion of this game and the series in general, I f*cking loved every minute of it and can confidently say TW3 is my second favorite game of all time, and would be first if not for the immense nostalgia I feel for my number one pick. However, if there's one thing to take away from my review, it's this; The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is everything you could ever want in a mature fantasy RPG, and much, much more.

Personal Rating: 11/10

The best game ever made.

There is so much to tell but i don't want to spoil anything for anyone. Simply every gamer needs to experience this masterpiece. In fact if you play first two games too, surely your experience will be even better.

At this point, i think it isn't possible to see such intense and impressive game in the future again. But last time i felt like this, which was the time that i finished first witcher game years ago, witcher 3 proved me wrong. And i guess, i need to wait for another tittle from CDPR that will prove me wrong again.

When I'm 80 years old and sitting in my rocking chair, I'll be playing The Witcher 3. And my family will say to me, 'After all this time?' And I will say, 'Always.'

This game deserves every last bit of praise it has gotten. It has one or two flaws (most of which will be resolved with the Add-Ons), but you'll have to be really, really picky to find them, if you'll even notice.

Only problem with this game is that it still finishes me even upon finishing the game for the third time and that I have absolute no idea what to play next -- for whatever it will be, I will be sorely disappointed.

These scars long have yearned for your tender caress
To bind our fortunes, damn what the stars own
Rend my heart open, then your love profess
A winding, weaving fate to which we both atone

Lass mich deine kalten Lippen küssend schmelzen.
