About This Game

Experience the first story in a mind bending trilogy! The Fall was recently awarded Game of the Year for Best Story from Giant Bomb.

Take on the role of ARID, the artificial intelligence onboard a high-tech combat suit. ARID's program activates after crashing on an unknown planet. The human pilot within the combat suit is unconscious, and it is ARID's duty to protect him at all costs! As she progresses into her twisted and hostile surroundings, driven to find medical aid before it is too late, the realities of what transpired on this planet force ARID to reflect upon her own protocols. ARID's journey to save her pilot ultimately challenges the very rules that are driving her.

The Fall is a unique combination of adventure-game puzzle solving, and side-scroller action, all set within a dark and atmospheric story. Exploration will be paramount to surviving your adventure. Utilize ARID's flashlight to uncover a myriad of interactive objects. If what you uncover is hostile, switch on your laser sight and kick some metal! Get ready for a disturbing journey as you fight, explore, and think your way forward, expanding ARID's world, in spite of her protocols.

The Fall features:
  • A compelling story - Crafted over the course of two years, The Fall's story is a cut above standard gaming fare.
  • Story/Gameplay integration - Players encounter challenges that force them to think in ways congruent with the game's story.
  • Thick atmosphere - A very well polished visual style is complemented with The Fall's full voice cast.

Clunky battle system. Mediocre puzzles. Great story. The latter is why I would recommend this. Finished game in just over 3 hours so be weary of going full price for it.

The Fall is one of the best scf-fi storiies I have encountered. It asks some incredible questions about what being alive means and delievers one of the best twists I have ever seen in a game. Also, it harkens back to old school adventure games like Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series.

Don't read anything about this game going in. It takes about 3-4 hours to complete so just grab it and get it done in one sitting. You'll be glad you did!

The story and experince is worth the headaches. Looking foward to the second part.

I cheated and ended up watching all the walk throughs online becuase you get stuck a lot looking for puzzle pieces; something I hope the next one fixes. For example, limbo never had this issue for me and kept my flow through the game. Getting stuck just hurts the flow of the story, but after watching part of a walk through I found myself turning on the game and haveing to get to the next part. However, some times longer puzzles with back tracking help tell the story.

Have to go to work in the morning, so I ended up watching all the playthroughs-- the ending is amazing and wish I had waited to get ther my self. Still, thanks to let's plays, I bought the game and am looking foward to the 2nd part.

Limbo this is not-- that said, there are some graphic issues that make everything black-- I had to adjust the graphics to full brighness to see the subtle hues that showed a beutiful world in darkness. Limbo, did not have this issue, however, these backgrounds also help tell a story. I just wish there was a better way to represent dim lighted enviroments.

Check out the Kickstarter to find more about the 3 influnces of the game.

I found the puzzles in this game frustrateing. Even after looking up the solutions I felt like some of them were a logical stretch.

You'll spend a lot of time making no porgress. Only to look up the solution and learn that you just hadn't shined your flashlight in the right corner somewhere. And you still won't know exactly what you're doing until you've blindly connected the dots. This will happel a lot.

This game isn't too smart for you, it just doesn't give you enouh information to let you be smart.

The atmosphere is great -- wonderful lighting and bloom effects, layering, good audio quality, and cool special effects (screen glitches, etc.)

Wish I could say the same about the gameplay. Aside from a very numb experience of pacing back and forth with a flashlight consistently shining into the shadows, and a "puzzle solving" mechanism of simply interacting with every item in every possible way... there are also some unpleasant, buggy things:

1) Despite a lot of great animations, the transition from jump to landing is quite poor. Unfortunately, jumping and landing is a pretty common and frequent occurence!

2) There seem to be major problems with triggering flashlight/look function on and off. By default, holding down the right-mouse button is glitchy at best -- sometimes not triggering the light on at all, but more often it cycles through on/off without being functional. The only way I could get it to work properly was by setting the "Toggle" mode on the settings, so a single button-click turns it on. But even then, whether it triggers the first time clicked is iffy (it doesn't always work)

For the significantly discounted Steam Sale price, it was worth a download just for the story, visuals, and audio (more of an "interactive story" experience than a game.) But at full price... I would say no.

The Fall is a game that immerses you directly in a dark and intriguing atmosphere from the beginning, with a magnificent music, great graphics that have good performance.
About the game, has an amazing story that is not repetitive just to make a longer game, The Fall puts you directly in the move, face to face with challenging puzzles, a careful script, good dialogues, unpredictable (if you not pay attention) movements, and a surprising ending.

The only two thing i feel wrong about this game, was the spanish translation need some revisions, and the combat system that is a little slow to react, but i really like the idea, and i hope see in the sequel that kind of combat strategy which makes you think more than just shoot.

The main points I enjoyed were the subtly developing main character and the narrative about AI freedom and self-awareness. A dark, intriguing atmosphere and an end that isn't trite or overplayed.

What I didn't enjoy was the gunplay. It felt somewhat tacked on, most of the time, and seemed like a distraction from the main points of the game. That, and a few puzzles were somewhat unreasonably roundabout are my main complaints.

Other than that, a wonderful story with a really interesting sci-fi narrative. Looking forward to the next installment.

Well son of a ♥♥♥♥♥ if this wasn't actually pretty good.

It's a fairly standard point-and-click-esque with cover-based shooting thrown in. There is substance in these humble beginnings; some puzzles caused me to pause, a bit perplexed but with solutions that inspired and, in many later cases, entertained me to actual laughter. Action segments felt decent - I was very much in control and there was satisfaction to be had. These segments are infrequent, reacting well with their choice of use in specific parts.

Of course, what makes The Fall shine like a diamond in the rough is its premise, and the way that it unfolds.

There are no humans in this world; cold, severe logic drives every character in ways that is both easy to follow and intruiging. We see the conflicts unfurling from a distance as we approach but find them fascinating when presented by the few characters seen. At no point does the story not make sense - it's both watertight and accessible, so you may wade in freely and find the speed to which the game picks up much shorter than usual.

Framing the plot is the UI, which uses a Unix-like terminal that emphasises minimalism over complexity. Come to think of it, there's actually no HUD in the game, at all. Everything that shows up is a result of your scanning over the ruined depot, a cunning move to reward investigation using light. We have precisely what the designers intended, because of this: players moving through dark, devastated areas sweeping their light from the ceiling to the floor, controlling their speed to drink in both the surroundings and any analysis of the area we can find. It works. It feels good, and the A.R.I.D suit's robotic movements are the perfect compliment to tie these moments to the overarching story.

One of the most notable things that drew my applause was how "abilities" are unlocked. Put simply, I have never seen it done better than The Fall. The AI controlling the suit is denied access to functions such as networking with other machines and greater firepower, but these functions have failsafes that activate them when their release is required to safe the occupant's life. Therefore, you are able to activate these by intentionally putting your pilot in danger, a colossal AI protocol moral quandry. These represent contradictions to the running protocols of the suit, to such a point that I wonder why I've never thought of the concept before. The Fall makes it seem so natural and obvious that this would happen for AIs in general, and for it to have achieved that as a story about AIs shows its fortitude as a pure story, let alone a story attached to a game.

Of course there are some rough edges to be found - some moments when the suit seems to float along the ground, hands that don't connect with ladder rungs, some floating objects here and there - but their arrival was noted and discarded, as by the point I'd encountered them I was wholeheartedly sold on the entire experience anyway.

For the 69p I bought this for, it's beyond any measure of value for money and a standout success for showing how Kickstarter projects can bring otherwise-impossible projects to life. The Fall tells a strong story using minimal assets set to a soundtrack that seemed almost perfect for every moment it appeared. It's much like a shot of something strong, but goes down smooth - you'll be at the end of the experience quickly, but it'll feel like you've just drank something well worth the money.

I bought this because it's on sale, and the reviews were fairly decent. But after an hour of playing, I've had to reference a walkthrough several times. I'm not particularly good at point and click, since it requires testing everything possible, but I feel like the puzzles give you no hints of any kind.
The story seems intersting, but the game is just agitating me, so I can't recommend it.

What looks like a similar action adventure game to The Swapper, The Fall is its own beast. Dark, grimly funny and cleverly written, The Fall takes the player down in to the murky depths of an abandoned robot factory and the ethical dilemnas therein. The art is beautiful but for large portions of the game your only source of light is your torch. That can make puzzles more of a 'scan every inch for something you missed' rather than brain teasers. The music is used mostly as atmosphere so there's not a lot to touch on there. The story is pretty great, actually. Yes, this is a part one of three but The Fall ends on a satisfying note whilst hooking the player in for more. Enjoyable gameplay with an intriguing plot. Recommended.

The Fall is arguably one of the best sci-fi short stories I've ever played. It's a great perspective; definitely a breath of fresh air from the "I'm a Space Marine, and we kill everything!" gameplay you find everywhere else.

Admittedly, you can easily beat this game in less than 4 hours, but don't let that deter you. It really is a great story.

For all it's dark-tones and dim lightning, The Fall is a beautiful-looking game. The story presented is certainly enticing and the tune it plays lies somewhere between cyberpunk and science fiction and the mixture is good. But those are the game's only good points for me. Even by adventure game standards the logic here is obtuse at best and completely obfuscated the rest of the time. Items and triggers needed to progress the story are often hidden away in the inky blackness of your surroundings, and despite repeated trips back and forth and back and forth you will miss them over and over again.

About half the time, the required solutions will be obvious, but even when you understand what is required of you, linking together the correct sequence of events and the items you need in order to progress can at times be nigh on impossible without consulting a walkthrough. This is triply frustrating when you cannot pick up certain items without triggering a certain event and must traipse back and forth across the level three, four, five times in order to get things done.

Some games are hard, some games are obtuse and confusing, but generally they are honest about these things without being condescending, you understand despite your frustrations that it is the game and not yourself that is the problem. With The Fall, and its complete lack of consistent mechanics outside of combat (which is klunky in the extreme) and what amounts to 'anti-hints' (when there are hints), one feels as though crucial information is being omitted as some kind of prank at the player's expense. Because of this, at the end of the day I did not enjoy myself playing this game, I felt like I had participated in an IQ test written by a narcissist following the logic of a madman, and was then berated for three hours for not having a brain as twisted as that of its creator.

I got this game up during the Steam sale. It's a side-scrolling adventure game with some combat elements. It's an enjoyable game with the right amount of weirdness to make it interesting and memorable. But I would have been really disappointed if I picked this up for the full price due to the short length. The game is intriguing but doesn't give you any information on the character, location, or the events behind the onset of the story. Wait for a sale or a price drop before picking this up.

Excellent game all round. If you have read your Isaac Asimovs then you will like the robot vs. robot interactions and how they try to figure out things while being constrained by their protocols.

Action itself is satisfying enough. Some simple shooting and taking cover type of action. Focus is on puzzles though and enjoying the macabre world of faulty robots and the broken facility where they are.

I have no actual complaints about the game. Mid-game there are some puzzles that are quite hard to figure out but then the difficulty spike is over and it's mostly a quite even game to the end which i will not be spoiling here.

Get this game.

Holy ♥♥♥♥ this game is just nuts. This game is a 7/10 for playability (because i had to always deal with some major crashes which got fixed by switching to beta update and integrifying the game cache). The story is 8/10. It is interesting but the lore was missing in my eyes but not the story lacks it. Ambience 9/10. It took 4 hours for me to finish and just bought it for a really small price at the moment. In totel i give just a 8.5/10 must buy at this price before you miss it ladies and gents!

It's a cross between an adventure game and a metroidvania, but more the former than the latter. There's slight platforming and a bit more simple shooting, but for most of the game you're solving puzzles. Overall it works really well, particularly because of the thick atmosphere and interesting plot. It might look like Limbo when you start it up, but it doesn't do the artsy-fartsy gimmick like it. This is a solid adventure game with a plot that hooks you in, especially if you're a SF fan. Won't say much else because that would be spoiler territory.

The only thing you might struggle with are the controls. You move with the keyboard in typical platformer fashion, but you hold the right click on the mouse to aim your flashlight and see what you can interact with (as nodes in many other p'n'c games) and then press and hold shift and the movement keys to interact with objects and use the inventory. Additionally, you can switch from the flaslight into a lasersight for shooting with F, but of course you can't interact with the lasersight on. It can be frustrating at times. Also, some objects you can interact with are either small enough to miss or blending in the dark backgrounds. There's around 2 or 3 of those that could have been better highlighted.

The positives outweigh the negatives, and I highly recommend it!

We still need a neutral or mixed for reviews. I recommend this game if it is on sale, i got it for a dollar and I don't feel too cheated, but I wouldn't pay any more than that.
-The game looks nice, but a few of the animations are weird.
-The story is top tier stuff, and I wish there was more lore about the world.
-The gameplay is comparable to point and click adventures but with VERY awkward controls, but you'll get used to them. That is if you don't take any breaks, which won't be very hard, because the length of the game is its worst sin, clocking in at about 3.5 hours for me. I've played maybe 2 point and click adventures, and I don't speedrun games, so the length isn't my fault.
If the game were longer, then I might recommend it at a price higher than $1, but the length is almost criminally short. If there was some sort of comic book or even a novel set in this world, however, I would read the hell out of it. It also ends on a cliffhanger ending, and the second game isn't out yet.
