About This Game

Experience the first story in a mind bending trilogy! The Fall was recently awarded Game of the Year for Best Story from Giant Bomb.

Take on the role of ARID, the artificial intelligence onboard a high-tech combat suit. ARID's program activates after crashing on an unknown planet. The human pilot within the combat suit is unconscious, and it is ARID's duty to protect him at all costs! As she progresses into her twisted and hostile surroundings, driven to find medical aid before it is too late, the realities of what transpired on this planet force ARID to reflect upon her own protocols. ARID's journey to save her pilot ultimately challenges the very rules that are driving her.

The Fall is a unique combination of adventure-game puzzle solving, and side-scroller action, all set within a dark and atmospheric story. Exploration will be paramount to surviving your adventure. Utilize ARID's flashlight to uncover a myriad of interactive objects. If what you uncover is hostile, switch on your laser sight and kick some metal! Get ready for a disturbing journey as you fight, explore, and think your way forward, expanding ARID's world, in spite of her protocols.

The Fall features:
  • A compelling story - Crafted over the course of two years, The Fall's story is a cut above standard gaming fare.
  • Story/Gameplay integration - Players encounter challenges that force them to think in ways congruent with the game's story.

Holy ♥♥♥♥!!! This game left me gobsmacked, what an amazing game. This is basically like watching an amazing sci-fi film or if Dead Space was a film and it wasn’t Americanised (over the top violence and pointless killing of seemingly infinite enemies) then this would be it.

Firstly, to the people complaining cause it’s not a full game and it stops, then clearly you guys shouldn’t buy a decent game like this as you clearly don’t have the logic to read. The game clearly states (in about game) that it’s the FIRST part as quoted: “Experience the first story in a mind bending trilogy!” Clearly also meaning there will be 2 more parts to the game. If that wasn’t enough for you, you can also be cleaver and check out the achievements as the last achievement is called Fallen: Complete Episode 1. If that was still not enough you can check out this comment or any other, it really isn’t that hard!

Furthermore, the game; is pure excellence. Perfect and easy to understand controls, amazing graphics for the game and last but definitely not least, flipping fantastic hair standing story!! The story is the core (and what makes everyone mad I guess) as it’s so good yet alas doesn’t finish as there is a massive cliff-hanger. I literally knew it was coming yet I started screaming and had to get up from my chair because it was so…I’m still speechless sorry.

Definitely worth every penny!! Fall 2 you already have my money and same with Fall 3 hope the story continues with such an amazing pace and can’t wait for the rest!! I MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!! Recommended 1000000000/10!

Excellent game here, for sure. It has beautifully rendered graphics and a compelling story. The ending to this first installment literally left me with my mouth hanging open. That being said, this game certainly is story driven in that there are no true choices you can make to affect the outcome. This title has one story, and only one way of achieving the ending to the story told thus far in the first installment of this title. Although I absolutely loved the astmosphere of this game, the lack of even the illusion of choice kept breaking me out of the game's immersion. Other, minor gripes I have with this game are that the controls are awkward and the game/cliff-hanging story is short. I would say the game is too short for the asking price, but the story and character development are so compelling that I already want to purchase and play the next two coming installments. I. am. hooked.

So I haven't put much time into this game, but that's because the first actual puzzle where you convince the robot to let you enter is broken for me. I've restarted the game three times and looked up tutorials and everything, but I can't get through. So, I can't really say much other than I've wasted my money. The atmosphere is nice, though, and I liked the concept it all started with.

In a word: A promising first chapter.

After being disappointed by The Swapper I decided to look for another story-driven Sci-Fi game to quell my desire for a deep narrative and duly landed on The Fall. Briefly, it’s a side-scrolling shooter by way of point and click adventure. I consider it closer to the latter, although it does include a lot of sections where you shoot things so there's more action than your typical Wadjet Eye Game. While it's spoiled by a few contrived puzzles, it succeeds in terms of narrative ideas. The story concerns an AI unit, operating under the logic of her parameters who becomes involved in a quest for self-survival. Naturally, this means the game is chocked full of Sci-Fi themes and the atmosphere adds a lot to the feeling of being stranded somewhere in space. With the exception of a slightly too long mid-section, it's a promising first chapter in what's being developed as a trilogy.

Recommended for fans of cheap paperback science fiction novellas.

Side-scrolling point and click adventure, with action elements.
Great art, with a classic sci-fi vibe. Fans of robot/AI stories will be pleased.

This story driven AI drama feels less like a classic point&click,
and more like an action sidescroller with a lot of plot.

I got The Fall through a Humble Bundle, but it's well worth the 9,99€!
The game looks and sounds great, it has a cool atmosphere and the story really drew me in. And it's really cool how the menu is not only styled accordingly, but actually integrated in the story and gameplay. Well done, Over The Moon!

Though there are a few things I'd like to point out:
1. I kept getting stuck. The solutions weren't always very clear. For example, in the first level, I tried starting the lift and walking off, but that didn't seem to work, so I tried other stuff. Then when I looked it up, activating the lift and walking off was indeed the solution. Turns out you just have to do it rather fast. But the penalty of missing the time windows and having to take the lift all the way up and down again is too harsh. It really slowed everything down and discouraged retrying the same approach.
I got really stuck a few other times later on too.

2. Another complaint is the mouse-aiming/camera: it's just so obnoxious...
The mouse movement seems incredibly slow and you can't really see how far you need to move your mouse to switch sides. And when you do, the camera sometimes spazzes out.
I think much trouble might be avoided if you'd take the absolute screen position of the mouse to aim left or right, instead of using the position relative to the character.

I played it for a good 4 hours, and I'm going to try again tomorrow to see if different dialogue options at the start of the game unlock others later in the game. (I'm not sure, but I'm guessing they might)
I'm looking forward to episode 2!

The Fall is basically a classic point and click adventure game with a little bit more modernized controls and some light combat. The gameplay primarily consists of examining, picking up and using objects. The star of the game to me however was the dialog which in most other games these days is atrocious.

You play as the AI of a combat suit whose pilot is unresponsive. You set out to seek medical attention for your pilot and investigate where you are and why you have been sent there. All of the dialog is between different AIs, which made it very interesting.

There is also a bit of dark humor in the game, some of which I’ll never forget.

-Playtime-
The game is very short, the first play through should only take 2-3 hours depending on if you get stuck on any of the puzzles. The game apparently is supposed to be episodic, this being the first game in a larger story.

-Achievements-
Quite a few one-off achievements that added a little mix into the game but none were that difficult or took very long to complete on a second play through.

Recommended on sale.

TL:DR Great story and atmosphere though the poor controls and combat let it down a bit. This is only the first part of the trilogy and probably not worth buying at full price right now. I'd recommend waiting to pick it up on offer or for part 2s release.

Full Version:

The Fall see you playing as a mechanized combat suit AI called ARID who takes control when the suit pilot is rendered inconscious. ARID crash lands in an abandoned facility and in compliance with her programming has to find medical aid for her pilot. The story for this game is brilliant as well as the incredibly atmospheric setting. The gameplay is a bit of is a combination of puzzle solving and metroidvania style exploration of the facility.

There is combat but it is the biggest weakpoint of the game with it being very clunky and awkward though not to the point where it ruins the game. This is also the first of a trilogy and so the game is only about 2-3 hours long with a cliffhanger ending. This is worth considering if you want to buy it as its been 2 years and part 2 in still unreleased though it may be released soon.

Good points:
- A really gripping clever story that had me hooked
-The setting is really atmospheric and unnerving
-I really liked the visual style of this game which makes good use of shadow and lighting to add to the unsettling atmosphere of the setting

Bad points:
- Clunky controls and combat
- Puzzles are a bit uneven. Its usually finding an object and using it on another object but some of the items you need to collect can be hard to find or in unobvious locations
- This is only the first part of the trilogy and thus it ends quite suddenly on a cliffhanger so it maybe worth waiting though given its been 2 years since release and still no episode 2 it may be a long wait.

The Fall plays more like a point-and-click than the action-adventure game it appears to be at first glance. There is plenty of adventure, certainly, but the bulk of the game is spent shining a light around and learning, not spent in the brief - but not out of place - combat sequences. This is not a complaint as the story is what's important here. The famous 'Three Laws of Robotics' concept is explored with a slight twist: the triad of laws each AI is bound to is different from the laws other AIs are bound to. The game's three characters, none of which are human, serve to play out the resulting thought experiment brilliantly and manage to do so while inspiring emotional investment, all within the game's relatively short run time. More installments are planned and despite the two year interim between The Fall's release and now, the next part is actively being worked on. However, the impact of the The Fall is not dependent on the story continuing as the ending screen declares it will, it's plenty strong and plenty complete as it is.

Short and sweet. You can more or less see where this story is going, but the atmosphere and the final punch at the end still hit their mark, in my opinion! The shooting is a little bit janky (partly my own fault, I'm not used to a console controller) but it's also forgiving enough that it doesn't get frustrating. Very melancholy game with a lot of gallows humour.

"I am the A.R.I.D. onboard this mark-7 combat suit."
The Fall is a nice but short side-scroll sci-fi puzzle adventure with a lil' bit of shooting. I really enjoyed the story, the puzzles and the sarcasm which you'll find here & there. I don't get the negative reviews, maybe those had completely wrong expectations. Somehow TheFall reminds me of AnotherWorld meets DayOfTheTentacle, somehow. but enough said - enjoy the game at least on sale.

Pros:
+ very good voice acting
(finally an indie game with voice acting!)
+ very good atmosphere
+ good gameplay
+ good story
+ good puzzles
+ good sound
+ good controls (keyboard&mouse)

Cons:
- playtime is only about 4hrs, if U ain't high ;)
- only "okay" controls (gamepad)
- some unlogical puzzles (but I liked that)

Really loooking forward how the story continues! (The Fall2 has already been anounced.)

A short, interesting game, The Fall's strength lies in its narrative following the A.I. of a suit of armour trying to save its human pilot through a dark and twisted setting. There are some occasionally frustrating control issues, but largely The Fall plays like a contemporary point & click adventure like The Silent Age or Gemini Rue. Add in some gorgeously dark and understated graphics and there's more than enough to hold one's attention. The price may be a tad high for what you're getting (I completed the game in a single sitting one evening) but for the £2 I spent, I'm a very satisfied customer.

"The Fall" takes us back to a point in time where clicking around on eveything and hoping something happens was the norm. Maybe it was my own trancendence into modernity, but I can't help but feel that this method no longer makes for an interesting form of gameplay. Coming from a long time veteran of older titles including "Myst" and "Riven", there's a way to intuitively help the player figure things out, and then there's how "The Fall" handles them. Solutions are very unclear and not always intuitive- there's also massive amount of backtracking that occurs when you inevitably get stuck on a single decision point that hampers the rest of your experience with the game. What really sucks, though, is the fact the story is truly engaging, but is locked behind the gate of puzzles that take too long to solve for little payoff.

I really sat on the fence on this one because of the story, but I honestly would probably recommend a lets-play video, because the story is all I cared for out of the whole experience.

I'm recommending this game -- but that's largely because of the promise and potential that the next two games in the series keep what is great and remove what isn't.

The first big warning: this is a 3-part episodic game. It will take you about 2-hours to play.

This game mixes up a bit of side-scrolling action and typical adventure game puzzles. Honestly, neither one comes off that well compared to the examplars of the genre. I played with a gamepad and found it just a bit too painful. Aiming during the action sequences was a bit tricky and, in retrospect, I should have stuck with a mouse and keyboard. Interacting with the elements in game is too hard: you need you use the right analog stick to aim the item, then hold the right should button to bring up the "interaction menu", the use the left analog stick to navigate through the interaction menu. Compare that to games where you have "press A to call elevator".

The story is interesting: an AI that is trying desperately to save it's (unconscious) human pilot in a mysterious facility that has undertones of every sci-fi space station in gaming history (c.f. System Shock, Dead Space). Things have gone wrong, people are dead, you will slowly figure out what and why. During this first episode, though, you won't actually learn anything concrete -- if they don't start addressing this in the sequel, all of the potential will quickly become wasted.

The single biggest failing of the game, and what they need to improve in sequel, is the crappy adventure game puzzle-itis. It suffers from the same stupid, insane internal logic that so many adventure games suffer from. Where you can only interact with things because at some future point you'll need the item. For instance, you walk into a workshop at some point and can pick up the wirecutters. Because you'll need them OUTSIDE of the workshop. But you can't pick up the hammer. So, later on when you need to hammer something flat, you need to come back to workshop.

You'll suffer through a number of these non-sensical puzzles.

A room with a shark-type-creature in knee-deep water. Of course you can't just shoot it. That would make too much sense. You need to do a 6-step program to trick it.

Need to sing a song to a baby to make it stop crying? Instead of your futuristic A.I. having 2 billion songs in its database...you'll engage in 12-part shenanigans that don't involve any singing at all.

This computer doesn't have power? Shoot a cable and then just plug a live wire into it. Because that's totally how shooting and electricity works.

Stuck? Shoot a panel (which is the only interactable element in the room) and hope that an elevator keycard drops down. Oh, it did! What an amazing coincidence.

This puzzles only make sense in internal adventure-game-logic. I ended up using a walkthrough for over 50% of the puzzles.

If they can fix the puzzles and keep the story, the sequel will deliver on the promise of this game.

This game is absolutely excellent. I highly reccomend it if you like figuring out puzzles (some of them without easy solutions), moderate amounts of combat, great dialogue, as well as interesting commentary on the idea of AI. Excellent, excellent game. Some of the puzzles were a little difficult to get, but they could've been solved if i'd just been a little more patient with myself. It's a really good game, I promise.

I strongly recommend this game, especially if it's on sale and you happen to be looking at the reviews wondering if it's worth spending a few bucks on.

This is one of the very few games I have ever played where the story alone kept me interested. Excellently written, well voiced, tightly focused, and thought provoking. Science fiction done as well as a good book or movie.

The gameplay is decent, but nothing spectacular. It's about a 60/30/10 mix of exploration, puzzle solving, and action. The exploration ties in very well with the story, but the combat will probably disappoint people who are looking for something more challenging. As for the puzzles, I'll give them props for making sure the in-game logs give the player clues how to solve them, but it's still your basic adventure game logic of "run around rubbing things on other things to see what works." Whether you consider that a draw or a drawback will depend on how you feel about adventure games.

My only complaint would be the length. It's a short game, with limited replay value. An excellent way to waste a weekend, but probably no more than that. It does apparently have a sequel in the works, with another one planned; despite this, the story is entirely self-contained.

9/10, would buy again. And will buy the sequel!

I'll start off by saying that I was really turned off at first by the disparity between what the trailer seems to show and what the game actually is. This is not an action game, it's primarily a puzzle game with a strong supporting narrative. Admittedly it's my fault for judging by the cover.

That said, once I altered my expectations The Fall was a great experience. The atmosphere and dialogue were great and the ending left me wanting more. The combat leaves something to be desired, but again this is a puzzle game first.

I would highly recommend this for people looking for a compelling short story or big puzzlers. I caution platformer/action gamers as you will be disappointed.

It's a pity that there are only two buttons: recommend yes, recommend no, and there is not a "WTF?" button as well...

I have finished this game 2 minutes ago, and I still don't know which one of the recommend buttons I'll have to press, but let's just say this, without spoiling the game: at least here I have a choice.

Because if there is something annoying in this graphic adventure salted with limited (and underdeveloped) combat sections, is the lack of choices.

After a (rather boring) start, the game becomes an intriguing mystery adventure which raises interesting questions about humanity, artificial intelligence, and the nature of choices, but everything runs on a rail: when the protagonist is put in front of a very difficult choice, the result is already set, and our only role in the story, is to do the pre-set mechanical actions that will make the story continue, and witness it's choice.

Of course this isn't a novelty: many other games sins in this way too (and this one works hard to justify the lack of choice, which is all but unwarranted), but the net result is that getting to identify yourself with the character becomes impossible and the sensation of being tied to a seat while watching a theme park ride becomes inevitable. The fact that the action in the "fake branches" isn't automatic actually makes things worse, as they made me feel like an automatron myself (and if that was the objective of the game creators, I didn't like it).

That said, the story is quite good until the disappointing (and quite forseeable...) finale, the graphic is nice without being incredible but creates a very believable and immersive setting, and the sound does it's job and nothing else (with the notable exception of the voice acting of one of the characters, which is 5 star. You'll see what I mean when you meet him).

So should I recommend this game? For a budget price (<5E), it's probably worth playing (and I got it in a humble bundle), but as the current 9.99E price goes. Nope. Thumb down.

Outstanding story. Frustrating, buggy gameplay.

I ran around in the very first area for 30 minutes, because a hole had appeared in the floor which prevented me from accessing (or knowing about) a vital piece of the first puzzle. I had to look up the solution to realize that my game had simply bugged, which was solved by a restart. A few minutes later, after completing another early area of the game, my character suddenly lost the ability to jump. Again, I ran around for a few minutes trying to determine whether this was simply a game mechanic, before looking up a guide and realizing that I again needed another restart.

After that point, I effectively had lost trust in the game's puzzles. not knowing whether they were challenging or rendered impossible due to game-breaking bugs. It was only because of the great story that I trudged through the rest of the game with a guide. I'm sure that not everyone will have my specific experience with bugs, but given the threat, I wouldn't recommend this game to others.

It's games like these that make wish there was a "nuetral" or "meh" recommendation. This game has a novel story, a beautiful atmosphere and a well paced chapter. It left me feeling lukewarm though. I just couldn't get fully into it.

I love this game, but I can't in good faith recommend it.

I like a puzzler - but all of the puzzles in this game were a bit like a metroidvania: get the thing take it here - no goat puzzle (wiki it) or kick the precise pixel, everything here is pretty logical, and sometimes you feel like you have an in-engine choice.

The story's narrative is amazing, I really enjoyed it - the pacing is wonderful.

Why wouldn't I recommend it though? Simply put - it's half a game. I paid very little for this title as a steam sale item - and still it didn't really feel like enough game. I feel bad for the kickstarters.

You're in, hooked - waiting to see what happens next - and then the game just ends; or rather, just stops.
Usually with an episodic game A) it announces itself as episodic, and B)you have a smaller story arc that concludes inside each episode, and builds towards the grand overall arc.

pretty game, interesting controls, physics are pretty terrible - but not largely used.

worth a punt for a couple quid, but not full price - that said... I'll probably be buying the sequel... I must know!
