1.08b Hotfix Patch

*Fixed an issue in non-english builds where components wouldn't properly appear on other ships as loot (i.e. Pirate Lords). Note that any existing ships in your universe will be unchanged, but new ships will properly get loot drops if appropriate (they're still quite rare). To 'clear out' ships, you can use a jump drive to jump to another solar system and back, which will repopulate the regions.

*Fixed some minor German translation issues.

I wholeheartedly recommend this. A kindred spirit to Wing Commander: Privateer; if you liked that, you'll love this. It was a bit short and a bit shallow, and I'm done with it for now, but I'll likely play it again in a year.

Pros
  • Confident aesthetics, ships you are excited to climb into, pretty space
  • Decent ship loadout options to tune performance to your playstyle
  • You can be effective in ships that are not "top tier"
  • Randomized missions are fairly diverse
  • Interesting (if somewhat predictable) campaign that resolved sensibly
  • Pretty well-implemented progression keeps the game challenging for a while
  • I don't care for the music, but it's very well done and a lot of folks will love it; it definitely fits the game's vibe
  • Characters and side stories are interesting and well-written
  • Fun - everything there is to do is fun to do
  • Pirating is a thing

I don't really have any cons.

Mehs
  • I'd have liked more diversity in combat strategy; a big selling point is broadside combat, but other approaches would be nice too
  • More fine-tuning and harder choices for loadouts (like EVE's system) would have made it more interesting
  • Could have been longer
  • Mining and trading were pretty thin
  • At some point you just outgear everything, no matter what you're flying; it ceases to be challenging
  • Some escort missions are inordinately hard, mostly due to glitches
  • Pirating could definitely have used more attention

Absolutely worth it at full price. No-brainer if on sale.

I played this game for 88 hrs, did like 16 Youtube videos on it, so I really really enjoyed it. And then one day, it wouldn't start any longer, no matter what settings I chose or what I re-installed. So even the game is fun for an extended period of time (especially while the missions last, not so much after you get a ridiculous large ship that lets you fly into any obstacle and just plow through it), I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Overall i think this game performs so well in its mechanics

Its a mix between EvE Online (System and Station Mechanics, Mission undertaking etc.) and the ship combat from Assasins Creed IV (Broadside Combat)
If you are a big fan of action packed space battles this is for you

This has to be one of the most under-rated games I have ever played. Sure it could be better- the whole 2D plane thing, and I am personally not a procedurally-generated world fan... but SO ADDICTIVE. And probably top 3 soundtracks of all time. Overall it creates a fantastic balance of Country/outlaw feel with a space exploration background

Imagine you're playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Now, imagine that instead of being stuck with that one, tiny, but somehow infinitely upgradable little ship, you can actually buy new ships as your fortunes improve. Now, imagine you're in space. Finally, imagine you don't have to get out of the ship to follow some British ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around the island for 20 minutes in an area that is suddenly, inexplicably teeming with soldiers.

I think I got sidetracked. Anyway. This is an excellent quasi-3D ship combat game. Not a full 3D sim like Freelancer... all player-piloted ships, and those of similar size, seem to occupy the same plane of space. Rolls, climbs, and dives are not valid maneuvers. Shields go fore, aft, port, starboard, with no concern for doral or ventral. Despite this, you don't feel particularly limited in your play. It's just streamlining something that can overly complicate some other games.

There is some downside. There isn't a lot of variety to your available weaponry. The targeting AI that controls your turrets most of the time is kinda stupid, and works in exclusive terms, rather that allowing prioritization. There are, inevitably, escort missions, some of which you will lose for no good reason. The in-game economy is a little capricious, which makes moving goods profitably as a trader a bit of a long game. But I still find it enjoyable to spend a few hours making pretty explosions in space, set to a soundtrack that you might find playing in Jim Raynor's house back on Mar Sara- forgettable, upbeat, twangy rock.

Fantastic game. Didn't think i was gonna like it as much as I did. The combat was fun even in the cases where it was mindlessly easy. The sound is great. It's best appreciated with good speakers as the explosions are satisfyingly boomy. The music is generally something i don't like but it was really well done in this game. Graphics are really good and with very nice ship designs.

This game feels just right. Its the feeling that you are a space cowboy and the universe is there for the taking. Imagine a mix of Escape Velocity series (Escape Velocity/Override/Nova) and Firefly. This is it. The soundtrack is epic, its the best combination of music for this kind of game I have ever listened to. It makes the game enticing. The gameplay is quite easy and easy to catch up. Space navigation and combat are too easy, specially because there is no movement on the Z Axis.

The story in itself is very simple, both in lenght and content and there is only "one path" to follow trough. You can continue playing after you finish the main storyline, and that is a huge plus. Specially if we can add mods/dlcs in the future. New ships, new weapons, new missions.

I would def. recommend this game.

Pros:
gameplay
music
combat
graphics

Cons:
story quality
only one path to victory
short list of weapons/ships

If you liked Privateer or Freelancer you will like Rebel Galaxy. Only caveat is the game is a 2D Naval Style Combat. But for the price, it can not be beat.

I'm a fan of the old-school get your mission from some weirdo in the bar of a space station style of space combat sims. My all-time favorite game would have to be Wing Commander: Privateer. This game does a really great job of coming close to that experience.

Pros:

The soundtrack is fantastic. All the music tracks are well chosen. I only wish they would release the soundtrack as an option to buy.

The choices of ships and equipment are not vast, but just right to keep things fun and keep me working to get more cash so I can try different combinations of builds.

The environment is really beautiful.

The game is fun to play. I would find myself warping to random spots on the map just to see what was there.

Meh:

The lack of a 3rd axis took some getting used to. If you put it in your brain that it is a sailing ships game with space textures instead of water it will be easier to wrap your mind around it. Once you do that you will stop noticing the inability to fly up.

Besides. "Up is just where you are looking" -Ender

Cons:

Some of the pirate encounters feel very RNG. I'll be flying along doing great and defending myself to suddenly find myself in overwhelming odds for no reason what-so-ever and go boom.

Mining is boring as hell. And this is from someone who enjoys mining in Eve Online.

Overall: This game is worth the price of admission.

7/10

An excellent space shooter for fans of naval style combat, with solid visuals and a hell of a soundtrack. This is the kind of game that feels slightly empty for the lack of multiplayer, but there's plenty of customization and exploration to keep a lone player busy for hours.

Overall this game is amazing. As other reviewers have mentioined this game plays like Freelancer and the Assassins Creed sailing mechanic had a baby. One issue for me: I did not find the soundtrack to be as wonderful as most do. There are moments where this game genuinely feels like a space western in the vein of Firefly, with moody slide guitar and banjo cues. At other times, the music drifts into the realm of nickelback clones and pop country (even worse than Whedon's godawful song at the beginning of Firefly). Personally, I'd ilke to see some of those lound country and blues songs toned down or replaced with a wider variety of background/atmosphere-building music.

Other than this particular issue of taste, I wholeheartedly suggest you buy this. Best space sim I've played in recent years. Combat is very satisfying and upgrades come quicker than you think if you go about your purchases the right way. A small tip: don't constantly strive for a new ship. Instead work at upgrading your defenses and weapons. Once I figured this out, it was much easier to complete those high-paying missions needed to finance the next vessel.

Definitely impressed with the quality of this game, especially since i had never heard of the company behind it. ive play several space adventure games, but none of the did it for me like this one has. the ability to control something bigger than a fighter or bomber is what ive wanted for awhile. frigates and destroyers are commonplace in this one.

I would definitely enjoy seeing a sequel/prequel or maybe an expansion.
