After the character creation, which is basically exactly the same as Fallout's, I, Boar, survived a crash landing on Planet Alcatraz. When I regained my consciousness, two men with meat cleavers stood in front of me. Disco music started playing and I killed my first opponent by kicking him in the balls. The next guy took a few punches into his faces, but I won. I took their clothes off and put on a poncho. Suddenly, a man without pants crawled towards me and told me to finish him off. With the words "You like that, scumbag?" he received a kick into his head. Then, I took out my recently acquired meat cleaver and started hitting him, but I kept missing. Finally, he was dead. I proceeded my journey and suddenly there were another two men who wanted to see me dead. They were strong, but luckily I could eat three potatoes just before I died and so I beat them. I carried on and reached a village. The guard in front of the gates shouted "My spear overcomes yours!" and he threw his spear at me. It pierced me but it didn't stop me, and so we ran at each other and with a single hit in the head he went down. Afterwards, I entered the village and I stood in front of three men with assault rifles and shotguns. Even my potatoes couldn't save me this time.

So far, I had a lot of fun. The game mechanics are alright, the dialogues are cheesy and sometimes you just can't avoid laughing. However, it's laggy. Every second the game freezes for a few frames which is very annoying.
But still, Planet Alcatraz is definitely worth a try.

Update:
Rule #1 in Russian games: Somewhere, sometime, you are going to find a bottle of vodka. Now I understand why there are so many potatoes in this game.

This game has amazing combat system that mix of RTS and RPG. Other stuffs like story, musics, graphic are moderate. If it is going on sale, you should try it.

Really fun rpg game!! This game is similar to fallout 2 game. Only thing i did not like about the game was the start of it which they kinda just throw you right into the combat, without any help or telling you the controls, but once you got it figured out the game gets FUN!

Pros
Use melee items to hit or throw with
Skill points to upgrade your character (if you dont upgrade the right skill you may just find the game impossible)
Missions are well made
Can control a squad of 4

Cons
Terrible voice acting (Game i believe was made in russia and the russian version is a lot better than the English)
Animations on cutscenes are bad
too many bugs

This game is basically my new Fallout 2, it is so damn great. It even starts like Fallout 2, with a LOT of frustration due to the lack of character power and understanding of the game mechanics in the beginning. This game is absolutely badass, the voice acting is so bad it's good, the character animations are quite funny at times, and some of the poorly translated stuff people say is absolutely ridiculous. The soundtrack is also awesome, I never expected some sort of dance music on a brutal prison planet, but it is damn good. The developers deserve more money, I want more games by them.

Well, english localization actually not very good, but I played it in Russian and this game is quite solid. Graphics is slightly outdated, game mechanics somewhat cranky, but - RPG system is nice, story is excellent, quests are very fun, lots of weapons and skills, large game world (prison planet). 8/10 for Russian version and it seems 6/10 or 7/10 for English version.

Planet Alcatraz is a decent RPG with a Fallout vibe. The combat system is more in line with the Baldurs Gate and Icewind Dale games i.e. Combat is in real time but you can pause the action with the space bar to issue commands.

As other reviewers have stated the English translation and voice acting are terrible but can often be (unintentionally) amusing. However bad the translation is it does not prevent you from following the plot or understanding what to do next.

The minimum spec graphics card for this game is nVIDIA GeForce 6600/ATI Radeon X800, 128 MB. I have an nVIDIA 8800 GT 512MB and it was working overtime running this game with the default settings. I recommend changing all graphic settings to Low. I honestly couldn't see much difference after I did.

Don't go the desktop when the game is running. When you try to go back to the game it often slows to a crawl and you have to shutdown the game through task manager.

The game is pretty unforgiving early on so I can often the following tips to prevent you having to restart like I did.
* Put all your skill points into melee combat so you can actually hit the enemy
* Wait until you have earned two perk points then select the Botanist perk (Botanist gives you extra skill points when you level up).
* Don't complete side quests until you have recruited all of your comrades (the last one being Demon).

I've played through the entire game and didn't encounter any major bugs.

Hope this helps.

I kind of like it!

The voice acting in the earlier parts might turn you off, but the gameplay has a bit of depth to it.

The main problem is in the localization. Somewhere in-between the Russian version to the English version, the intended gritty setting got lost. However the much lesser English version is now hilariously funny due to the lacking voice work.
It's like watching one of those B-movies and having a "good time" by making fun of it, but along the way you find a thing or two you enjoy.

So if you'd like a laugh, and if you can stand some localization hickups then I'm sure you'll have a mildly good time with it .

If you like party-based isometric RPGs, this is not the best one in terms of story but the gameplay is pretty good, and if you get a deal on it then it may surprise you with how fun it can be.

+Combat is fun and a mix of real-time and tactics, very similar to Fallout 1-2 or Baldur's Gate style.
+Good number of skills and abilities to develop as you level to tailor to your playstyle
+Huge variety of weapons from brooms and shovels to pistols, sawed-off shotguns, and hi-tech blasters.

-Terrible voice acting. Really, probably the worst you have heard. Doesn't even match the poorly localized subtitles.
-Very little in the way of customizing your main character initially outside of some basic stats.
-Graphics are not a strong point and even though high resolutions are supported, zoom still feels limited

This game feels like Riddick and Fallout had a baby. A russian baby that couldn't talk but otherwise had the best attributes of both. The gameplay is basically Fallout with RTWP combat, and the story (if you can deciper it) works pretty well (good justification for why gear would ramp up the way it does, and a lot of scrounging).

The game is surprisingly fun as long as you can ignore the voiceovers and can translate some of the translations. Don't necessarily expect a huge number of non-combat solution to problems (you will be fighting a lot) but there appears to be a large number of alternative resolutions to quests (i.e. who you side with). The writing/translation is dubious but the actual plot is pretty entertaining.

Look like rough prisoner type. Character's name is Boar. Speaks in fruity Englishman's voice. "Oh, what a beautiful planet." Immediately assaulted by local homosexual tribe. After kicking their feet once each, they're defeated. Picks up their knives and find Amamba awkwardly crawling towards you. Says he came on the same ship and for you to put him out of his misery as his legs are broken. Boar kicks him in the face shouting: "Die, scum!" Afterwards take on an entire village by yourself. Easy win, thanks to being able to stop time and eat a ridiculous amount of magic body healing potatoes. Inventory is full of guns with no ammo and assorted knives.

Best first ten minutes I've ever played in a game. 11/10. If you have $5 to spare and a sense of humor, would recommend.

it's a sunny afternoon in kiev. you're talking a brisk walk after getting lunch, and suddenly you step on a fargus-published copy of the one and only Санитары подземелий, produced by GOBLIN... you look at it with interest and take it home. after you install it, your graphics card suddenly takes upon a life of its own and nearly kills itself from overheating because the devs of this game forgot to put in actual functioning vsync. you grumble in defeat and pick up a copy of some random stalker total conversion you picked up for 10 roubles and install that instead to drown your sorrows.

seriously, force vsync on this before you play it lmao

Some of the game play, like the comabt anmations seem broken, and the main characters's voice sounds more like well eductted white-collar crook rather than his blue-collar aperance might suggest and whoever wrote the dialoge was either really bad at writng or really good, but spread it so thick that it sound really dumb. Makes it hard to take the game so seriously, while not complety spoiling it.

Soory if my reveiw is harsh for person who didn't sovery far in this.

I may write something more complimentry after a few more plays.

Spoiled... Everything just dont make sense. At first, i thought that it is a good game just that graphics were a little bad but still a positive one. However, after playing, the entire first few "stages" were like just plain dumb and difficulty level is so weird..

Dialogue was written by Russian 4th-graders and voice acted by their dads after several rounds of Vodka shots. 2002 called and wants its graphics back. 1997 called and is demanding their animations back. Soundtrack is stripped from 1987 pornos. Best $2 I've spent all year. 10/10

This ♥♥♥♥ing game

I thought I was prepared. I'd played 7.62mm, another game from this dev, and thought I might check this out since I liked that. I expected a tactical rpg in the vein of jagged alliance, and that's more or less what I got.

But

I wasn't prepared for the main character sounding like he learned english entirely from british radio announcers, or for the game startin with a black man chucking a spear and me and yelling about spirits. Later I ate some potatoes, killed a man and took his beret, and fought a Gorrilloid.

10/10 what even is this

I can compare this game with only "Mass Effect" 1/2/3 because the dynamic of events remotely similar to the story Shepard.

The perfect game to play with the whole family ...
