Inspired by reading more than one thousand Russian fairy tales, this is a story about love, spite, greed, modesty, humility and seeking. It is divided into four acts - according to the four seasons. That means you'll visit some of the game locations several times, but every time at a different season and in a different time of day.

About This Game

Inspired by reading more than one thousand Russian fairy tales, this is a story about love, spite, greed, modesty, humility and seeking. It is divided into four acts - according to the four seasons. That means you'll visit some of the game locations several times, but every time at a different season and in a different time of day.

Together with the characters of a humble girl Nastienka and gallant hero Ivan you are to overcome many baits and puzzles and in the end you'll try some of the wedding's pirozhki.

You are awaited by mysterious beings and magic objects, wild beasts and domestic animals and pets, guileful highway robbers, evil hag Baba Yaga, Old Man Mushrooom, prudent Father Frosty and many other traditional and non-traditional fairy-tale characters.

Any child able to switch a computer on can play this with parental assistance, however, this is ideal for children aged 6 years as their first game as the PC control system is for the beginner.

Impression: A Point and Click game that I could not finish due to system compatibility issues which appears to be a common issue for many users of this game. What content I did play was not very engaging nor motivating enough to find hotfixes for this game. I played about half an hour worth, with an extra hour spent trying to fix it.

Recommendation: Thumbs down due to developers not patching the game to make it compatible with systems later than Windows XP. Not worth buying in any department unless there is a fix. Even if it was working, I would not recommend it at full price unless the gameplay improved past the first 30 minutes I was able to play - see below.

The Good:
  • Interesting premise/story which appears to have strong historical basis (i.e. based on an old Scandinavian folk tale).
  • Mildly non-linear in that you can explore locations that clearly have no use until later but were interesting nonetheless.

The Bad:
  • Voice acting presents as if for children, but with no guidance or hints, I can imagine this would be difficult to maintain a child's attention. It is also in American accent, which I found a poor choice for a game clearly focusing on a Scandinavian environment and it's compelling story.
  • Resolution was lousy and the art used is dated even for a year 2000 game.
  • No skipping or speeding up walking from A to B.
  • No tutorial or interactive help.

The Ugly:
  • Not compatible or patched to work with systems later than Windows XP. There is no error catchment or user friendliness regarding said compatibility issues, resulting in crashes at frequent points in the game. This can be bypassed with a partial fix with compatibility mode however many users have complained that the game required further hotfixes and changing of registries (with warnings that it will cause security leaks) - see here.
  • There is no resolution options besides (?)800x600 and its forced Full-Screen - leading to resolution changes in background programs.

Conclusion:

I usually separate my reviews based on user's background of gaming in the particular genre (here for examples), however I was unable to play this game long enough to really explore how this game represents point and click games (or any genre really). What content I was able to play, was mildly enjoyable and the solutions to getting tasks done were logical and relatively intuitive. Besides being disappointed in losing my money, the only thing I truly regret missing about this game is learning more about the story, which promised to be compelling and unconventional.

I finished the game, and it did not crash on me (Windows 7/64 bit). In fact, it works fine. (Maybe because I turned the subtitles off?)

This game has a 640x480 resolution. You definitely don't buy this for the art, as line art and the 3D animations are uninspired and look old even for the year 2000. The voice work doesn't sound like much at first, but I found it drew me in as the game continued.

The storytelling and general atmosphere transport me straight into a Russian fairy-tale, and for that the game is worth playing. The game has full voiceovers and is DRM-free. It took me 5 hours to complete.

Mini-Guide (no spoilers)
  • As soon as you see grandma with her book, press Esc to get the options.
  • Turn down the music.
  • Turn subtitles off, they're ugly and the game has full audio.
  • Think of it mostly as an interactive movie. Some cutscenes get very long.
  • Also, you may need to talk to the right people in order to be allowed to do what you already know you need to do. (interactive movie -> dramatic reasons)
  • You can do almost everything with left-click, but right-click is examine/search, and you need that at least once.
  • Remember the two previous points if you are stuck!
  • Save regularly. You can't die, but some people have reported the game crashed for them. (I play on Win7. I had no issues, so I think it's been fixed, but I don't know for certain.)

I noticed that many people had trouble running this game, but I did not. I suspect that the difference is that I have an older computer running Windows XP. So if that is your situation. this game might be for you! I enjoyed playing it, mainly because of the goofy dialogue and voice acting. It is quite a strange story, but kept me entertained. It is an adventure game with lots of dialogue. The tasks aren't very hard and so this game is at a pretty casual level and would also be appropriate for younger players.

The game crashes all the time. And even when you manage to bypass a bug (compatibility mode), another comes up five minutes later. You make a sock, it crashes. You enter the cave, it crashes. You leave the cave, it crashes. After the cave, it crashes. At this point, it's unplayable.

I was really enjoying this. But whatever you do, do not waste your 5 bucks on this. Buy a cheeseburger instead.

It crashes once you complete the sock in the first scene.
