Game Compatibility

Super Game Jam is first and foremost a film project - the games created during each episode were developed in 48 hours. While they are all delightful, they are mostly unfinished and unpolished prototypes that may not function flawlessly or at all on some system configurations or operating systems. Technical support for these games will be minimal as the games themselves are provided purely as an extra bonus with the short films and were not prepared for standalone commercial releases.

This project is a reflection on the state of the game development community. It is often too common to see developers ask full price for a partially completed game. Now we have to pay full price on a film that fails to meet its first deadline.

I enjoy game jams, and really enjoyed episode 1. I have to question if the project is still going on because it's July 12 and the June episode has yet to be released. I get wanting to hold things back if it's not ready but let the fans know first. Especially paid fans.

My recommendation is a YES to watch the series but a NO on purchasing it until all the episodes are released.

It's hard for me to recommend or not to.

And here is why. Super Game Jam is a nice movie project following teams and show how they come up with a game for a jam in a very short time. Each team consists of 2 indie game devs which usually don’t work together. I enjoyed how the film shows a bit of the creative process the devs go through. So a nice documentary/mockumentary-ish thing and if you are into video games and indie games in special you'll get entertained.

Now on the other side I have to say that it seems to be always the same moody ambient music in all parts. It’s getting a bit too much imho. Also the camera is off sometimes. Especially the last episode reminisced about Blair Witch Project.

And yes as an early buyer I am a bit salty that they discounted it on the last episode.

So I recommend it for when it is on sale.

What's here is good. Sadly, that's a single episode when the schedule says we should have three by now. When it's finished and all five are released, it might be worth the money. Based on the first one... eh. Wait for a sale.

And that "music" that starts the first episode? Please never do that again.

Okay, I know that the film could be talking more about Programming and all these Technical Stuff, but all of us need to know one thing: "We're trying to make a series that can be enjoyed by people who don't have any game dev knowledge and by those who do." -Daniel(From SGJ)
They will not fill this up with all technical things and hard-to-understand commands, everyone needs to understand what is going on, and C'MON this is just the FIRST Episode, I can see a lot of people just hating and criticizing.

I really can't understand all these people complaining about "little content" and "high price" on the forum
It will be(for now) 5 Episodes with at least 30 Minutes each, only in the First Episode we have 2 Extended Interviews, one with 12:23 and the other with 11:33... In the same menu you will have more than 25 Minutes of Pure Awesome Soundtrack by Doseone and Kozilek!!!
I could say about 5 Minutes of the First Episode you will find in Trailers.

Best of all is knowing that Episodes will still come till September! (Including their Interviews as well)

To sum up, I think this is very similar to IG:TM. They managed very accurately to convey the experience of a Game Jam.
The First Episode is incredibly well made. It is really interesting if you don't have any idea about what a Game Jam is, and how much people can learn from them, not only finding various other ways to develop their products but how they will put this on practice and perform too.
And Yes, I've played Navigator till the last circuit and I think it's pretty well and could evolve to something Bigger!

PS: ¹And God Bless You Daniel... Because he's the only one who appears here to talk with us xD
²Sorry for my English, I hope everyone can understand it!

TLDR - I highly recommend this product to anyone who has an interest in the videogame development process and/or the indie scene. I give Super Game Jam an 8/10.
Episode 1 - Navigator
I was interested in this project since launch. The only reason I didn't buy in earlier was the mixed opinions I have been seeing here and there. Some saying the project doesn't live up to expectations and other saying it goes above and beyond them. After a long time and many moments of "I'm going to buy this now" and then "On second thought I will wait", I finally bought Super Game Jam. I watched the first episode and played the first game I am very happy so far. The documentary portion was great. I really liked the personalities involved (Richard Boeser – dev of Ibb and Obb and Jan Willem Nijman - 50% of Vlambeer) and felt they had good chemistry, it was interesting, not as personal as I would have liked (Indie Game: The Movie nailed it), Sound and music were great aside from some bumping around in the background and the cinematography was up there with the likes of 'Free to Play' and 'Indie Game: The Movie'. The game that I watched these two guys make in 48 hours was really cool. The control were tight, visuals enthralling and I really loved the concept and I'm glad Nijman pushed the racing + companionship idea so hard.
Overall, I found watching the back and forth, creative process between these two devs who had never worked together before to be really fun and even inspiring especially after playing the game and seeing just how much they accomplished in 48 hours. For this review, I don't think I can give it a numbered score but I will say that I enjoyed the first episode immensely and would recommend it. I cannot wait to watch and play the rest of this (I cannot think of a word to describe this other than the very broad term of 'Project').

Episode 2 - Blossom
The Documentary
The second episode started off with something I wasn't expecting. The two new devs (Dominik Johann – former dev of Might and Delight and Christoffer Hedborg – Artist and dev for Super Stress-Out) sat down and watched a video message from the previous two devs whom gave the new duo their theme to work with. I really like this idea of passing on ideas from game jam to game jam, dev to dev. After receiving the message the two developers brainstormed the theme, which was gardening. The brainstorm sessions that occurred in the first episode as well are great. They give a cool look into how a game is conceived. I don't want to give a recap of the whole episode so I will just point out a few likes and dislikes I had with this episode. Much like the first, this episode had two devs with great creative chemistry, wonderful cinematography (especially those creative/scenic transitions/montages), music and flow. This episode did a great job at showing the stress and uncertainty that the two underwent during the final hours of the jam that wasn't all that present in the first episode. The only downside to this episode has to be, how hard it was to follow the creative process. I could barely understand what the game was shaping into until the end of the episode. This is probably the way the devs felt as well but I still felt pretty lost at times. This episode was certainly good but missed a major element that kept me engaged throughout the first.
The Game
The game was a little more abstract and harder to understand than the first. What I got from it was that it is about survival in an endless space with a home planet that is destined to die. The art, music, sound design, gravity and steering of the home planet were all stellar but the goal of the game was hard to comprehend. Even without a concrete goal, the game was still enjoyable enough to play through numerous times.
Overall
The second part of this project was good, not as good as the first but nonetheless very enjoyable. I can't wait to watch and play the next Episode of Super Game Jam.

Episode 3 - Catch of Death
The Documentary
Let me start off by saying this is by far my favourite episode of this project so far. What made this episode and contributed to the greatness of the first 2 is the amazing chemistry between the 2 devs chosen. I cannot give them enough praise for their choice of devs. These two guys, Sos Sosowski and Adam Drucker are ♥♥♥♥ing hilarious. They are the perfect match. They both have very comical personalities that had me laughing aloud very often. This episode was filled with comedy and I'm very glad the project makers noticed this and focused on this. Along with the hilarity, this episode also had the same wonderful overarching features that previous eps had (e.g. Music, cinematography), a great brainstorm segment, very memorable quotes from both devs and a nice change of tone for the entire project. This episode felt crazy, hilarious and gloriously ragtag. These guys seemed like the best of friends from start to finish and their ridiculous ideas, funny communications and strange workflow made this episode extremely enjoyable.
The Game
The game is as ludicrous as the devs behind it. It is basically football without rules or reason. A ♥♥♥♥fest of button spam and desperately trying to find where my character is and who my character is among a variety of other deranged characters in a world built by a 4 year old wielding nothing but a box of crayons and the kitchen wall. It's incredibly hard to understand what is going on but I had so much fun with this game. My playtime was also vastly extended by the inclusion of all the builds leading up to the final working game. Broken but fun.
Overall
This episode is beyond amazing. Enough said.

Episode 4 - Torr
The Documentary
This episode featured a dev who I was really looking forward to seeing. Jonatan Soderstrom, who made Hotline Miami, one of my favourite games. Jonatan was accompanied by Martin Jonasson, who made Rymdkapsel. This developer duo did not have the chemistry that previous duos had. Even though Martin was upbeat and happy most of the time, Jonatan looked uncomfortable and bored most of the time and was very quiet for the better part of the episode. I'm not saying I don't like him or disrespect him because he seemed bored but it did have an impact on how much I enjoyed this episode. Another factor that I missed was the creative brainstorming at the start of each episode. There didn't seem to be much a brainstorm and that kind of disappointed me as these creative session have been super interesting in past episodes. Flaws aside this episode featured the best cinematography so far. The use of Bokeh in a lot of shots made for some beautiful scenery and cool interview sets. The music in this episode was also some of my favourite from the project. Finally I found the creative process really easy to follow even without the brainstorm at the beginning. I understood every decision they made and why because the devs explained what they were doing as they went forward. This episode was a bit of a letdown but the expertise in cinematography and the still enjoyable premise of the project made it fun to watch anyway.

There's a lot of people that've left negative reviews because they're frustrated about the delayed release of episodes. I held off buying Super Game Jam until all the episodes were released (partly because I was most interested in the final episode) and for the sale price of £7.49 I don't at all feel duped or scammed.

If you're interested in documentaries - and in game development - then this is a fun little collection of short films that shed light on how indie developers operate. Though it doesn't represent everyday game development, the conceit of a 48h 'jam' makes for some interesting tension over the course of each episode. The strength of the documentary itself is probably the cinematography - it's filmed beautifully with a very intimate feel (especially since the setting is always the home of one of the developers); the score is also spot-on. As a designer I can really appreciate the way the content is presented through the Steam client in a very clean, simple interface. A similar attention is paid to the graphics in the documentary itself. And if you don't want to watch it in the Steam client the files are available as HD .mp4 files in the local files - so you can just pick them up and move them about DRM-free.

If you're only interested in the games...then I wouldn't bother. The price you pay is not worth the five rushed prototypes - but that's because at its core, this project was about the documentary. It's about the process of making the games, the people who make them and how they cope in a high-pressure environment. The games included in the purchase are not the focus - they're almost like special features. Speaking of special features - the 'posters' aren't all that great (in terms of resolution/quality), but you also get some nice bonus cut content and an EP-sized bundle of music from Doseone and Kozilek.

For £15, this is a tougher sell but you have to realize that not only is this a unique venture, it's an independent film. You'll pay something like £10 for a DVD in the high street, so consider the extra 33% the price you pay for supporting independent artists (the filmmakers and developers). If you don't feel like paying £15, wait for it to go on sale - anything below is a steal if you like quality, interesting documentaries made with a clear love for the subject.

For those of us who participate and enjoy game jams, this series is an absolute must-watch. For those of you who are aspiring game designers, here's your introduction into the industry. I have enjoyed every installment that has come out so far. In each episode, two game developers (you might recognize a few of them) are given a theme and are given 45 hours to make a game based on that theme. In every case so far, the two members seem to have very different backgrounds and talents. You'll watch them struggle as they come up with basic game mechanics, visual / audio effects , and work around various bugs that come up along the way.
It is unfortunate to me that most of the episodes have failed to meet their respected release dates. However, I'll let this slide, since every episode so far has been well put-together and properly polished into a professional looking product.

I expected a little bit more technical overview and motivation for beginning game designers/developers.

First episode - Navigator

As I wrote at the beginning of the review it wasn't what i expected. It was a little bit too shallow for me I would expect a little bit more of a in-depth documentary rather than "This is buggy, hmm, I know how to fix it!" and proceed to fix it without any explanation or comment.

Even though 48 hours isn't that much I think they could make the episode longer than 30 minutes

The game itself seems to be pretty good though, the design feels a little bit more mobile orientated to me, but heck, what do i know?

I'm curious what will the other episodes bring.

An Excellent insight into what a 48 Hour Type Game Jam feels like. I really enjoyed the games, and it's inspiring to see the game developers interactions with each other and how much collaboration can bring to simple concepts. Now to go find some Jamming buddies

This wasn't clear to me at first but when you buy this "thing" you get an interface that launches all the movies and games. I did run into a problem with one of the games hitting some errors and being unplayable. Might be because of the two controller requirement.

While I love the concept, I think it fell a little short but only because I was so disappointed by the creative process that many of the game designers went through. It really surprised me how boring and uncomfortable those design sessions were. Many of them didn't even get close to touching their creative potential and the games they produced are evidence of that. I think it's the starting format which is at fault. Who is asking these people to sit down side by side for the creative process? Yuk!

If you're a game designer, you have to watch this just because. Otherwise, not so much. Looking forward to the next one.

I've been eagerly anticipating this particular set of experimental films by Devolver Digital for quite some time now.
And have to say I'm impressed! They've found a brilliant way of presenting the excitement and nervousness of a game jam whilst providing an interesting character piece backstory for each of the participants plus a really exciting and marvellously polished experimental little game!

I'm glad that I will be receiving multiple episodes over time as this first one is almost underwhelmingly short, to the point where I've seen most of the film through the trailer. I'd like to see some more footage, even if it's b-reel, a livestream or a Q&A with the main guys or even the supporting cast of musicians, camera crew, devolver, graphic artists involved. Just to tie the project off neatly in my mind or as further promotional material to help support the series.

I have to say I'm a little dissapointed that ibb & obb wasn't offered as part of a promotional package since i've been waiting for that game to release on PC for over a year now...

Pretty awesome first episode - inspiring stuff. Not as cool as Indie Game: The Movie, in my opinion - less story, but more insight into what actually happens during the game-making process. Can't wait for the rest!

Interesting ride so far, it does a great job of showing the human side to game development. This in turn greatly changes the way you look at the resulting games. While I've never been one for racegames, having followed the creation proces and the choices that have lead to the results that you can see in the game gives a feeling of connection I otherwise wouldn't have.

I've played Ibb and Obb and rediculous fishing both in the past and getting the chance to see the talent behind those games in action is very interesting. Personally I can't wait to see some of the other designers in action.

If you're interested in the people behind indiegames this is a must-buy. On the other hand; if you're buying this just for the games, I'd wait a bit until more are released.

Great idea. It is very interesteing to see the process that these developers go through in 48 hours. The 'July' upload was almost a month behind schedule, let's hope they can keep things on track for the remainder.

Interesting proposal even for none game developers... This series gives a nice perspective of what its like to be a game dev and the fun game jams can be.

It also shows the outcome of a game jam which is sometimes rare to see in game jam documentaries or videos...

devs tried to make the deadline work but somehow it didnt... so cant really say im pleased with that...

but for those buying it post launched... its definetly worth it...

refreshing and unique.

As a game developer who has been making games since the 90's independently and in the industry, these series (actually this only episode for now) of game jam episodes are good, not Bad, not great, but good. It does reflect how it is a game jam away from an event, a game jam at the privacy of someone's house, I have done game jams like this and the process was very similar.

On the first (and only episode for now) you can see how they start talking about the idea of the game regarding a given theme, and how from that both try to fit themselves in the same page to make the game. Then it gets boring in some bits, but interesting in others, you just see how it is. If you are looking for the technical aspect of the development, well it doesn't go in depth, it is superfical, but like Indie Game: The Movie, its like a PG way to display the development without scaring way the general audience. Actually if you like Indie Game: The Movie you will like Super Game Jam because it has the same style, same music direction, camera, motion graphics, to the point that it could be a sequel or continuation of some sort.

Now this was only one episode and there is more of them on the way, which can be more in depth or show more variety, but the problem is, they are not available yet. The application says the second one will be available June, but we are in July, then in the game page says the episode will be available early July, but now we are close to mid of the month.

I bet its a hard process to edit 48 hours into a one 30 minute episode, and try to make it interesting, because to be honest, on a game jam you are mostly crunching and it could be a little distracting stopping to talk about the project in hand.

If you like watching other people work, specially people that you admire their games, and you want to see how they interact with other developers and how they deal with fast development, yeah its an interesting watch for any aspiring game developer (but if you are a seasoned developer you might cringe about the approaches taken).

This review is based on the presentation of the application and the available episode. Hopefully, anytime now, the second one will be avaialble and so on. The third one should be available by the end of the month, lets hope they keep the schedule, unless something does wrong with the production like it happens with every unfinished project.
