No don't do it, there are better things to do with your money and certainly your time.
The basegame was overpriced, unplayable and ugly, judging from the prices of the content and the previous experience I'm opting out.
If only there were a way to erase this crap from my steam library.

From "Hot mess" to downright fun. This game on release made me sick, I have been there for ego's other releases, this one was by far the worse.

I didnt think it was fixable, but honestly I was suprised, they kept slogging along and now it is actually pretty fun to play. It still has a learning curve and still has a couple rough edges, but if you like space trading games it is one of the best now. If you like empire building games with a space setting, it is one of the only ones (except all the other X series games of course)

This game is just wow. I love space games. Don't be put off by all the negative reveiews. It's honestly a great game. The only bad thing about it is that its extremely confusing at first and then gets slightly repetitive. There are plenty of videos and tutorials online but they arent the best. I've played about 50 hours so far and only figured out i could make my own trade routes about ten hours ago. rather then the ones given. The graphics are amazing. You can build ur own stations and manage a huge starship fleet. There are different starts to the game. If ur willing to put in the time to learn to play then plz get it. The modding community is really good too. About ten pages of good quality mods. I could keep listing things off but itd be easier if you'd just buy it. Get the DLC's too.

I love space simulators. I loved Freelancer, I loved X-Terrain Conflict. I love flying through space, fighting things, trading things and exploring. I love doing this.

This game, made me hate doing this. Do not buy this game. If you have bought it, don't install it. If you have installed it, don't load it. If you have loaded it, quickly exit it. Because I do not want you to suffer what I have suffered. This game is terrible. Play Freelancer instead. You will fell much better.

Finally this game has reached a playable state; the original release was dismal, but they have been adding content, functionality etc. Do not expect a X3 clone, but expect the universe (somewhat different) with a different play style.

This is Mount and Blade in space. If you're sick of empty "sand box" games like Far Cry, Fallout 4 or Elite Dangerous (so glad I bought this and not Elite Dangerous,) this is your game. You are one tiny ship in a giant galaxy of space stations, capital ships, freighters and stellar phenomenon. You can be a pirate, smuggler, trader, police officer, bounty hunter or eventually, shipping magnate and fleet commander. As is the case in a real sand box game, you're thrown into a well-thought out, functional world and you do whatever you feel like. Apparently the game sucked when it came out (all that's fixed) and franchise loyalists don't like some of the decisions the developers made. I didn't play it three years ago and I've never even heard of the franchise before; as someone with no previous bias towards this game I HIGHLY suggest it. Oh and the dogfighting is a blast. The world they've created is so awesome, I almost forgot to mention how great the combat is.

Conclusion: Forget Elite Dangerous; this is the sand box space sim where stuff actually happens.

i think its a good game, ignoring the review rating as most of those reviews are before egosoft patched the hell out of that game. i played the game after they fixed the majority of the bugs and glitches and it is a good game for those who are interested in space sims and/or econemy simulators. i think in some ways it improved from the previous games namely
1) ships arent restricted to six turret groups + one front battery anymore
2) lesser loadingscreens (going from one part of the universe isnt as painfull as in the previous games which was loading screen - fly to next gate - loadingscreen and you couldnt do anything in the loading screens)
3)the universe feels bigger(in the previous games the station were very close due to gameplay reasons, now we have highways, which connect the stations
4)capital ships are integrated better into trading
5)buiding ships and station takes time now, you cant just order ten battleships in a few minutes
6)equiping capital ships with weapons is a bit less of a pain in the backside
although it has some disadvantages when compared to the previus games
1) you are bound to a single, although upgradable, fighter/bomber class ship (might be because you dont have turret groups anymore so it isnt as easy to tell turrets what to shoot for a player so ego put you into fighter you are bound to, but thats just my theory)
2)every weapon type only has one "bay". for example you have laser A which only fires one laser at a time and Type B which also fires only one laser at a time.

I bought this game when it came out and immediately shelved it. The game was broken and not ready for public release. I didn't ask for a refund, I like all of Egosoft's X games and I knew they would support this or die trying. I decided to wait a few years for patches and DLC releases for the game to get more "complete". I am writing this review as the game stands now in April 2016, with Home of Light and Teladi DLC installed.

I am still super angry that I cannot fly other ships. X games always allowed you to pick your poison and fly whatever you wanted, or fly around in your space suit if you dared. This game forces you to drive the Albion Skunk, an M3 with M4 weaponry and M7 missile compatibility. I would prefer to drive a powerful M6 or hard hitting M3. I believe the reason for not allowing you to change ships is because they added walk around mode while docked in large ships or stations.

Walk around mode is stupid. Even on release, the voices were repetative, and everything about walking around the station was like some stupid mini game that wasted my time. The scenes become repetative as well. To make matters worse, your ship, the Skunk, can still be blown up in space wherever you entered the station from while you are walking around and chit chatting. You can get a game over if you are attacked while docked in a space station...

Egosoft changed the stations up. Each station can be upgraded and extended with different components, nice. However, every station has the same docking location types for your ship, IE bar, administration section, engineer wrench, and bullet thingy. They all pretty much look the same on the inside, and specialists can be found in their corresponding section, or anywhere really. It is random.

The sheer size of the stations makes it a huge problem if you want to talk to the station in general and get the low down on trade. Trading is also handled by scripted AI and command execution. No longer can you drive a freighter yourself and play the lowly merchant. You have to rely completely on your AI pilots. You are stuck with the Albion Skunk and that stupid co-pilot.

AI is horrible. Auto pilot is bad, so bad that they added the "Auto Pilot Epic Failure" voice error in the game. Path finding is bad. Ships get stuck on stations during combat. You can actually fly into a station and clip inside and get stuck. Combat is slow and pointless. You might as well sit still and snipe.

UI is clunky and it takes forever to assign ships or give orders. I found out how to group assign and broadcast orders to multiple ships, but it is still clunky and takes time to execute the proper orders. Fighters are useless. AI fighters will just die. Your transport ships will also randomly break down and not repair themselves.

The story is OK. X games always had terrible voice acting and the story was long winded and boring. I always just played sand box mode and eventually killed everything in my way. The story in X Rebirth, however, isn't all that bad, but it is highly unbelievable at times. I would have spaced my co-pilot the first chance I got. Though, I like the story in general, even though I can't believe how the main character just stumbles in to being main hero all the time. The writers portray human greed a lot, but seem to have a disconnect when it comes to Ren Otani's reactions to everything that Yisha gets him in to. Hell, I don't know why Ren wants to keep the girl in his ship, she literally ruins his life.

The story missions also take forever. Trading isn't fast, it was slow in X3, and even slower now that the ships have to travel farther and line up on even larger stations. It is a slow process building up your station to meet campaign objective goals. The stations that make your components are usually sold out or in the hands of your enemy. In fact, building the stations for campaign missions nearly ruined the game for me. You have to raid PMC ships to get what you need, and that takes time. The rest of the missions are simple, go here, escort this, kill that. I lost my entire fleet on a PMC boss fight only to find out that the mission was supposed to lose...total burn.

Level design is ♥♥♥♥, and story is meh. The space highways are stupid, and the music that plays while you are in them is garbage loops.

Fleet combat is also stupid. It is nearly impossible to tell your ships how to target. They also don't care about formations or tactics. Though, X games always had this problem and were usually fixed with mods. X Reunion, on the other hand, is so bad of a game, that nobody even cared to make the mods to fix this aspect of the game. You essentially have to zerg your opponent with destroyers to win a major conflict.

Pros: graphics are better than X3. Sound is similar if not slightly better.

Cons: Only flying the skunk is a low blow. If I ever meet the Egosoft decision maker that decided this was a good idea, I have choice words for that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. That literally ruins replayability for me. I hate the Albion Skunk, it is a terrible ship. Just about everything else in this game is worse than X3.

You cannot build station production loops anymore.

Other: If you are a diehard X fan, sandbox mode isn't too bad. However, it will probably get boring quickly because all of the cool management features from mods in X3 are not available in Xrebirth.

While not as welcome a sequel to the X universe, this entry was released to overwhelming disdain. over time however, the devs have took the complaints to heart and are truely trying to fix the game to make it more of what the fans wanted. and also fix the overwheming problems encountered at launch. i recommend playing this as it is a good step as to what developers should do when the game launches flat.

Ok ... I have never written a review about a game before but being a long time X fan since X3 Reunion and loving Egosoft for always supporting thier games forever ... not for money but to do the right thing for thier product and customers, I feel that the overall review score on Steam is now an unfair one. When this game came out I was so disappointed and it was almost unplayable. Over two years later this is the game I expected on release.

Seriously everyone completely forget the reviews from 6+ months ago or so. This is a different game. This is a playable game. This is a very emersive fun to play game that has the unique X universe feel. You can really do what you want in the universe Egosoft created. Be a pirate, mercenary, trader on a micro scale doing everything yourself or simply sit back and coordinate your fleets, fighting or trading, and let the game be more of a macro sim. Even better ... mix the two!!

The character models are not the best and walking on stations and interacting with NPC's isn't as emersive as something like Mass Effect, but the space sim feel is deep and emersive. If you like open world type games like GTA and you like space, then give this a try. If you are an old X fan who was burnt when this was released or if you never have picked up an X game, after this 4.0 update now is the time to do it. I have the Teladi DLC and I will be buying the Home of Light DLC too.

This game will give you many hours of fun and has high replayability as well. There are some high learning curves if you have never played an X game before, but it is very much worth it.

TL;DR. Forget the past two years of comments and reviews, this is a new game, one that should have been released in this form. Open world (universe) space sim unlike any other I have played. Egosoft the best developer who doesn't chase profitttsss but supports thier product and customers for years after release. Fight, Build, Trade, Think and start your empire today (or your anti-empire path of destruction) ! :D

Quite playbale and fun at the 4.0 level with the expansions. A few quirks/bugs with trading, but nothing that can't be worked around. If you're not into station building and building up an empire slowly, look elsewhere. This is about watching your third station come to life and finally start providing goods to your first two stations, reducing your costs as you begin building your fourth station, for which you'll need to go hijack a freighter with a boarding party.

This isn't fast paced (mostly) and it takes dozens of hours to get into the meat of the experience- well after the campaign ends, if you play it.

Still, at this point it's worth the cost and is a fun game. If I had this as a kid my brain would have exploded. Goes to show you what expectations change into after 30 years.

With 4.0, it is now much better than 2 years ago. Dare I say that it's pretty good. It's worth to try it regardless of whether you are a die-hard X fan or new to the X universe.
One thing to keep in mind though - it's an X game, but from a different perspective. If in original X games, it took you forever to get your first M2, and you could easily fly it and decimate everything in your path, then this game is geared more towards encounters in your M6 equivalent (Albion Pride/Skunk) or humongous fleet battles, where Xenon (Rogue AI machines) can take down half your fleet.

There are still some problems here and there. Most annoying things that i've encountered in 4.0 are:
1) Trades for your cap ships take forever for some reason. Was much better in 3.61
2) Capital ships now bump into asteroids when boosting, instead of flying through them. This might have seemed like a good idea at first, but the execution in sectors with alot of particles, begs for flight AI to be altered(flight path must be around asteroids, go off-ecliptic!).
3) Capital rebalancing - with introduction of Olmekron and Fulmekron destroyers, Taranis seems like a toy, while costing the same. Egosoft, please, add 2 more Plasma/Jet turrets on each side. It has spots for that afterall. Do It! And while you're at it, swap Astrobee launchers for V Crushers like on Arawn.
4) More Capital rebalancing - fix Teladi cap ships! All of them!

i think its a good game, ignoring the review rating as most of those reviews are before egosoft patched the hell out of that game. i played the game after they fixed the majority of the bugs and glitches and it is a good game for those who are interested in space sims and/or econemy simulators. i think in some ways it improved from the previous games namely

Finally this game has reached a playable state; the original release was dismal, but they have been adding content, functionality etc. Do not expect a X3 clone, but expect the universe (somewhat different) with a different play style.

This game was a failure at launch. mostly negative reviews and a 33 metacritic score reflect that. Now, its absolutely amazing. All the fixes and DLC have certainly made this a classic must-have for the genre. Its called Rebirth for a reason, how appropriate. Don't be fooled by the initial bad reviews, its worth it now!

I waited to purchase this game until 2016 as it had terrible reviews and I wasn't happy with the level of polish that I had seen. I'm glad that I did. With the release of 4.0, I finally bought the game. As a veteran of all of the previous X: Games, I can say that X: Rebirth is finally worth purchasing (as long as you buy the full version with all dlcs) I would also recommend installing the capital ship bridge mod to round out the X feel. It's not as complex as the previous X Games but I'm having a lot of fun and it's fairly immersive. For a 20 man studio, Egosoft did a good job on this game although it took them a while to fix the initial issues.

Kinda fun now with the 4.0 Update. Still buggy in some aspects, still boring on the Station/NPC minigames, still is better with some mods. But now is fun.
