About This Game

In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the Earth's surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age.

The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside. You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised underground. Having never ventured beyond the city limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat.

Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind. But what if the real threat comes from within?

I'm not a fan of horror games, if it gives me too many frights I will stop playing it. I'm also not a completionist or particularly hung up on mechanics. Too me what is most important is a gripping story, immersive atmosphere and mechanics that don't hinder progress through the story too much.

This game is great, it checks the box for all the important things to me:
* Story is gripping, especially for a post-apocalypic one which doesn't usually hook me
* The mechanics are fun, I had a blast shooting things - it was challenging but not off-putting. I played on the normal difficulty (one up from easiest).
* The atmosphere is amazing, portrayed really well.
* I had lots of fun throughout the whole thing. When I find a game I like I end up tired as I can't stop playing it. There were a few nights where I went to bed a couple of hours later than I should have.
* Perfect amount of scares for me. Some sections had me on the edge of my toes but it really added to the atmosphere and story.

On the down side there are a couple of things that annoyed me a little:
* Check-point saves - I f'ing hate these. In games that have moral choices, and small side quests, these should be mandatory. I do not want to replay sections because I took the path that progresses the story rather than the one with exploration or side quests.
* Moral choices - these aren't apparent, and without saves I didn't even bother. Instead I just watched the "other" ending on youtube. I don't particularly want to replay the game with a walkthrough telling me to take the left path first.
* Some mechanics aren't obvious, I didn't know you could recharge your flashlight or night vision goggles until 80% of the way through the game.
* Game works, F^&k gameworks - turn of phys-x if you have an amd card. On my 390x, I had a locked 60fps with 0.5 AA, tesselation down one setting and phys-x off. Game is still beautiful.

I would give this game a 7.5/10. If it allowed me to save when I wanted to I would have explored alot more and made sure I made the correct moral choices, making it a 9/10.

I'm going to recommend this game, as it's a fairly solid bit of wolrdbuilding and a fun adventure (not quite as good Half Life 3, aka Metro Last Light) and it's not like you can buy the original on steam anymore, but...

If you have Metro 2033 (and it was practically free for a while, and still easy to find codes for) the Redux is just not much of an improvement. It doesn't fix any of the manifold translation issues, which tend to omit useful / necessary information. It doesn't explain a million little things the original was panned for explaining poorly (have fun googling how to throw grenades / why your night vision doesn't work / what the hell you're supposed to do in the final crane sequence).

It also introduces a million little glitches of its own:

And way overdoes things with monster spawns, which turns the game's atmosphere far more action-oriented.

Game is great but I was unable to finish it. Got stuck in Tower with no gas mask and 30 seconds to live. Restarting Tower chapter goes back to Introduction. Developer has locked down console and config files so I can't enable god mode to get to next gas mask. Downloading saves also didn't work. With 95% done and after more hours trying to find a fix then playing I have no other option but to give this game a negative review as a reflection of my frustration.

The controls for this game are horrible. I could not continue playing past the first half hour. The mouse vertical sensitivity is extremely low compared to the horizontal sensitivity so aiming with a mouse is truly painful. It's like it was designed by someone who has never played a FPS before with a mouse. Looking at forums it appears this issue has been reported multiple times and the developers have done nothing about it since its release. Cannot recommend; this is just incredibly lazy.

This is one of the best post-apocalyptic games I've played. The gritty atmosphere, hostile but beautiful world, and Russian/Soviet-influence makes this game shine above many others in the FPS genre. This is definitely a game worth checking out if you're tired of the same-old linear shooters with half-baked storylines.

This game is really amazing! Metro games are one of the best I have ever played! I am big fan!
I have finished it two times! Or seven if you count the other five times I've finished the original Metro 2033.
My review here: http://steamcommunity.com/id/kosta9/recommended/43110

The history is so immersive, I felt in Artyom's boots, and it makes you want to play more and more everytime.
In comparison to the original metro 2033 game, this one has a lot more content, weapons, new areas to explore, new achievements, and awesome graphics!

Being able to fully convert the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gun into somthing a little reliable is awesome XD, and also Scopes, put a scope on everything, exept granades :( plox fix hahaha.

Jokes aside, I love this game!

this game is a 11/10, must play! Go grab your copy!

If you don't care or just don't pay too much attention to all that"We atomized Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, so when a soul leaves the body it has nowhere to go, and remains here, in the Metro"mumbo jumbo, and your game runs smoothly and doesn't crash, then you'll get to see a very special detail...

Atmosphere... no. The Atmosphere.

Moments when you're alone in the tunnels surrounded by mutants or when you're outside, in the cold dead city, looking for ammo: these moments are what makes this game so ♥♥♥♥ing good.

I bought this game with as the bundle whilst it was on sale. I must say that this is one of the few games that I would not have minded paying full price for.

Story:
Amazing, plot twists and moral decisions throughout which also affect the ending. I would recommend at least one play through for the full effect of the game.

Mechanics:
The stealth is amazing but can be a little too easy on the lower difficulties in the fact that people can't see you in shadow even if they are looking at you. This is a bit odd considering they live in dim tunnels.
The combat is a challenge and requires the use of multiple weapons to survive.
Survival mode is amazing; it relies on scrounging ammo, for trading and use; finding reconditioned air filters for your gas mask just to survive on the surface and I'm not sure about spartan mode but you have to recharge your torch if you want to be able to see.

Graphics:
They are amazing but may need tweaking when you go to the surface to prevent lag from shadows and light effects. I realise this is the remastered version but the graphics are still mind blowing, at least to me, today.

All in all I would rate this game 10/10.

P.S. Demons are a b****!

One of my most played FPS games in recent history

I've already forgotten, how many times I've beaten this gem of a game. Including the original "Metro 2033" it has to be at least 5-6 times. Why? Because the atmosphere and the universe of "Metro 2033" is amazing, it's quite literally "dripping" with atmosphere. Game is fairly linear with minimal exploration, however it adds a lot of gameplay elements, like the possibility of avoiding confrontations with human enemies, incapacitating them without killing them and so on. Also, there's sometimes alternate pathways you can choose, especially when going the stealthy route.

Voice acting in English is very cringe-worthy, I'd recommend trying to play this game with Russian audio and English subtitles. It just feels way more authentic this way, and the VO actors actually do a good job in it's native tongue. If you are a completionist, then it's VERY likely that you'll play this game more than once, so I do recommend playing the game at least once with Russian VA - it's worth it.

Gunplay is very well polished and the "Redux" in this case feels welcome, because the gunplay in the first game didn't feel so great. Gasmask system was very poorly done, and you really had trouble recognizing how much air you really had. Battery charging was extremely obnoxious and stealth was broken - however not in your favor, since if you got detected only ONCE the enemies in the WHOLE FREAKING LEVEL will always know your position, and getting detected was very easy. It felt like the stealth was an afterthought, while with "Redux" they fix the stealth so that it works now like it did in Last Light. Enemies have a very low field of view and darkness = invisibility - hilarious, I know, but at least stealth is viable.

On higher difficulties you die very easily, and game does not have a regenerating health system. You need to use the medkit to make the "bloody screen so real" go away. Guns have recoil and the sound effects are awesome. Highly recommend playing this with a good pair of headphones for maximum paranoia. Ambient music is also phenominal, which has undertones of despair, hope and eerie beauty, especially when walking on the surfice in Moscow.

The story is simple, but it's just enough to keep you going. Highly recommend reading the actual source material for the game, because it covers more about other character relations with Artyom. Lots of phylosophy about life and such. A good read. Still have to get myself Metro 2034 and 2035.

There's also a somewhat hidden morality system (you can't really know how much you have) and it's tied to the ending of the game, or at least it gives you an opportunity to choose an ending, rather than an automatic one. Still, it's disappointing, due to the fact that the next game: Metro Last Light already has a set story, based on one of the endings, so it doesn't really matter if you pick the "good" one. My guess is that the studio lacked the manpower to actually make Last Light into a two-part game, where endings mattered and had to scrap the idea, due to limited time, money and inability to make a branching story actually work, which in the end I think is reasonable, considering the crappy environment the developers had to make the game in.

In conclusion:

Would recommend this to any FPS game enthusiast and even more, to people who enjoy fleshed out worlds with tons of lore and interesting, albeit a little lacking in personalisation, characters. I do hope that more Metro games will be released in the future, because I can easily place this game together with other FPS legends like BioShock, Half-Life and the early days of Call of Duty.
