What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Dog Sled Saga still has growing to do on the "career" side of the game. However, we've had early supporters playing a preview build of the game for quite a while, and especially with recent changes, we think there's plenty of gameplay to enjoy. We're hoping to use Early Access to help support the remaining stretch of development and get new waves of feedback on the game as it goes!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately three months to a year. We've been working on Dog Sled Saga for quite a while, and for the most part, we're more devoted to turning it in to the game we want it to be rather than to a rigid release schedule.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

  • We're always hunting for inspiration for more ways to add depth, uniqueness, and liveliness to the dogs (e.g. temporary moods)
  • We intend to grow the list of things that are already in the game (e.g. more dog skills/faults, more race start/end scenes, more dog breeds)
  • We've done some early design of other avenues of success besides climbing leagues (e.g. impressing and working with the mysterious Familiaris Guild)
  • Some preliminary testing of multiplayer support has been done, and a bit of brainstorming on how to make it fun and fair for people who want to show off their team or have an even test of skill.
  • A lot of structural decisions in Dog Sled Saga's programming have been made with mod support in mind.
  • Dog breeding was one of the stretch goals of our Kickstarter - we've got plans in that department!

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game has seven leagues of increasing difficulty to climb with your dogs. If you find a good composition for your team (or teams) and make sure you play well, you will become an elite musher.
You can also fill out your journal with some experience and the help of your mentor to become an expert in mushing.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“If it feels appropriate, we may increase the price as the game grows more complete.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Some of our favorite features were inspired feedback from our preview build players, like tangling (and some yet-to-be-implemented ones)

We occasionally stream development and testing at http://twitch.tv/dorkus1218, and we've had some great back and forth with viewers there.

We also plan to keep a close eye on the Steam community hub for Dog Sled Saga.

The best place to stay in touch with us is http://twitter.com/DogSledSaga!”

If you are looking for a fun game which has little rpg elements i recommand it.
While the gameplay is pretty much throwing biscuits at dogs, the difficulty scales well and its fun to see your dogs improve.
Pros
-Fun level up system
-Cute dogs
-Upgrade to different leages to enter in better races

Cons
-Repetitive gameplay

i was doubtfull when i watched the video but when i played it, it was much more fun.

The game is fairly simple but incredibly addictive. I was looking for a nice relaxing game when I stumbled upon this, and it was exactly what I needed! I simply adore the art style, and overall feel of the game. Played it for six hours with almost no breaks.

A very nice game, I hope they keep implementing more features. One thing I wish there was, is a way to upgrade your sponsor slots (though some might think that would make it too easy). But as a whole, I have no complaints. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes cute dogs and enjoys these kinds of casual games.

Great game, very slow development. I was one of the kickstarter backers of the original game, and though it is a lot of fun, its taken years for this game to fully develop. I hope it continues to grow!

This is a fun, simple but challenging game that reminded me of Oregan Trail within the first minute. I really thought for a moment that my dogs were going to die if I clicked the wrong thing. Lol. Luckily that wasn't the case and what this game has going for it instead is a basic structure that pulls you in and has you constantly trying to better yourself. You might even wind up yelling at your dogs. I spent twenty minutes wanting to bury my Schnauzer in the dirt because the idiot kept getting fatiqued far too quickly, my other dogs didn't like him, and he made me lose out on TWO consecutive races even though he was REALLY good as the wheel dog!!!

I highly recommend this game for any dog and snow lover. It's charming, fun, and with it's own challenges that are well worth the effort in my opinion. I even stuck the movie Snow Dogs to play on the side while I tried to build a reputable team. Can't wait to see more of this.

This is probably one of the most addictive games I have played recently. I first tried it at my friend's house and immediately had to buy it. I have been playing it like a maniac since then.

So far I have enjoyed the game immensely, though that does not mean that I haven't noticed certain pros and cons to it.

Thankfully the pros outweigh the cons. The game is a pixel game which in my case is awesome because I love pixel games. The dogs and everything is pretty detailed and with pretty darn good animations. The colors and nice and soft and don't hurt the eyes even though the majority of the game consists of various shades of white and gray (the environment).
The game's racing mechanic is simple enough yet it offers a challenge, especially later in the game when you reach higher leagues. For examples, I am currently part of league 6 which involves having up to 5 dogs on your team and I have to admit I am struggling a bit more often to reach the 1st place. It takes a bit of practice and choosing the right dogs for the race becomes a lot more important. Still, it is very fun and enjoyable.
Managing your team is probably my favorite part of the game. Considering all the expanses you have it is really important to keep only those dogs who work for you. However, you usually have to spend some time working with any dog to see if it's really a good match for your team. There are quite a few things to considering when creating a team for a particular race. I also love that you can now specifically train or rest your dogs and manage who will train, and who will be idle for a while. Having staff to help you with that is of great help, especially if you have a lot of dogs to work with.
Unfortunately there are a few things that do bother me, though I am pretty sure they will be improved later.
First of all, yes, I understand that higher leagues are meant to offer a much greater challenge when racing, but sometimes the obstacles you have to face are a bit too much. Sometimes it is a bit too difficult to get to a race that your dogs are ready for and that will give you enough money to pay your bills.
Although the game has quite a few of them, I would love to see more dog breeds, but the ones who are actually suitable for dog sledding. Though I am sure that will come with time.
Also, I wish there were more things to do in the game. At the moment you pretty much just race and spam the rest/train + proceed buttons. I wish we could interact with our dogs more by feeding, playing or petting, maybe make it optional to boost their happiness, or skills or something. Maybe add some real errands where you have to transport things, or help people in need, like a simple quest system that can help you financially or in some other way like free special training or something. Crafting would be a nice addition, maybe make your own food or equipment or something like that. They do plan to add breeding later to the game which will be awesome.

All in all, this is a great little game to play at almost any time and I cannot recommend it enough! :D Regardless of whether you are a dog lover or not, it is a good game to play. The only real issue is that once you start playing it is definitely difficult to stop. On more than one occasion I would start playing and after a couple of minutes realize that in fact almost 2h had passed. It's an awesome game with an awesome concept that has potential to become even greater. It's just needs support! :)

This game is really fun and I can't wait for more updates. This game will be one of the best pixel games on Steam (I think) after Early Access (if its not already one of the best). I love all dogs and their colors, I like being able to change their harness colors and your sled color. The one thing that isn't working for me though is the kennel expansion. I click on it and it doesn't work, I'm not sure if this is happening to anyone else. Overall this game is AMAZING, when it comes out of Early Access it will be even more amazing. Thank you!

------------------------------
FIRST IMPRESSION
------------------------------

This game caught my eye and I decided to buy it on the first day despite no reviews being available. I will say that my first impression is positive. I did not notice any obvious bugs or flaws. The gameplay struck me as repetitive, but not boring. It has the potential to be addictive. The game proved to be a relaxing and enjoyable way to spend a night. It does not seem overpriced, but remember to be wary of any early-access title.

------------------------------
CORE GAMEPLAY
------------------------------

The core gameplay focuses on learning how to properly manage a team of dogs, and how to maximize race efficiency. Races use simple click and timing mechanics to manage factors such as sled position, hunger, jumping, and untangling. Proper racing is rewarded with speed and happy dogs. Awesome moments are rewarded with fame that can lead to sponsorship upgrades.

Learning about each individual dog is important to team management. Each dog has a unique personality that will affect their natural sled position, likes, dislikes, happiness, and rapport with teammates. Dogs will have their own favorite things, skills, and faults. They will also have different levels of athleticism that will affect their fatigue and hunger.

All of the information about races and dogs will serve one purpose: managing the team. The overall goal is to earn money from victories and move on to more advanced leagues. The time outside of races is used to rest dogs to lower fatigue, fill the journal, change leagues, and hire new dogs. Raleigh will offer a piece of advice (chosen by you) at the end of each race. This information will be used to fill the journal and provide gameplay tips. The first couple of leagues seem easy once the core gameplay is understood, but that seems subject to change based on in-game progress and future updates.

------------------------------
FINAL DECISION
------------------------------

I’m sure there’s plenty more to the game that I have not discovered yet, but these are my first impressions. I have no reason to dislike this game, and I would recommend it to anyone who finds the above information to be to their liking.

Very simple, but very fun. I'd pay $10 for it easily and I consider myself cheap. It's quite relaxing. The music is really catchy and it's a very cute little game. Definitely worth the price in its current state. I haven't found any bugs myself, but I should say I'm not terribly far into it yet. Still, nowadays that's pretty good for an EA title...

Really excited to see how this game progresses. So far, I am really enjoying it. The mechanics feel simple but really rewarding - improving your timing feels really skillful and the multi-tasking involved in each race is challenging without being stressful. Love the aesthetic and the music is spot on. Game is lovely, more than worthy of your money.

This game is like having football manager crossed with dogs
The gameplay is simple yet difficult to master as wind, trees and obstacles await u on the track
weather plays a nice bit into the game as it feels like u are really in those weather conditions.Ur dogs need to be fed while racing so that their stamina dont go down too much that they cant run anymore(basically u throwing biscuits to them). If u time it right and throw it very close to their mouth then they will speed up even more
the dogs has different personalities. Their faults, their strong points and even their habits and even some dogs who love the attention of fans.Sponsors can sponsor u when u become famous enough too
so far i like how this game is progressing and hope that u guys can add more to it
A few more options like upgrading ur house and ur own character walking around in the house and playing with the dogs or feeding with the dogs(basically more interaction with the dogs in the home to make a better bond with them and maybe even taking them out for a walk?) would be nice though...so far a solid game in my opinion

Dog Sled Saga originally caught my eye because I'm an animal lover and I enjoy a good pixel game. I was looking for a more casual game I could play when I didn't feel like tackling a steep learning curve or intense multiplayer gameplay. Dog Sled Saga met all of those expectations and more. Personally, I find Dog Sled Saga to be one of those games that I might play when I'm feeling down or overwhelmed. The atmosphere, though its graphics are simple, is fun and upbeat. The game may not reap so much satisfaction for everyone, but I feel so triumphant and proud of those adorable, digital dogs when we win a particularly difficult race.

I'm typically wary of Early Access games, but I've gotten more than my money's worth out of this game, and I'm not even close to getting bored. I'm happy to support the developers with whatever they choose to bring to Dog Sled Saga in the future.
