Dead Effect is Gold now!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re proud to announce that Dead Effect PC/MAC is finally completed. Thanks to the success of the Early Access version, our game is ready.

Successful Early Access !!

We’d like to thank Valve for giving us the opportunity to release Early Access on Steam. This feature helped us immensely and without it, we wouldn’t be able to finish the game. During the Early Access stage, we had the chance to work on Dead Effect and finish the game in its entirety. We were also able to give it a much higher quality than we’ve originally expected. Thanks to the support and resources we’ve gained in the Early Acess stage, we had the chance to add many new core features for the PC/MAC version of Dead Effect (for example new enemies and visual enhancements). We were also able to add many improvements and innovations that the fan community asked for.

We also want to express our deepest thanks to the whole community. Your comments, reports and observations have helped us to fine-tune the game to its final shape. We could not have done it without you. Thank you!

Beta Update 1.4 (Is Live!)

Dear DE community,

Before the final release of Dead Effect, we have one more update to share with you. It will bring some more changes and improvements which many of you asked for.

One of the most important things this update fixes is the technical glitch that caused many of you to get a black screen. We’ve looked into it and found that the problem was in the Unity engine. Unity version 4.5.4 has fixed the problem and so DE should be fine as well.

You can find more info from Unity here – http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-4.5.4 - “Fixed full screen rendering at less than native resolution.”

After a long debate among our team’s members, we’ve also decided to change the graphical interface and the design of the main menu so you’ll be able to interact with it more easily and also use the controller. The change was a lot more complicated than it may seem at first glance. We had to go all the way down to the core mechanics of the game and change things there, so the implementation has taken us quite a long time.

We’ve implemented German into the game and we’re still working on the small bugs that came with it. We’re also preparing a French version of DE.

Currency has been rebalanced in later parts of the game.

We’ve prepared a little Christmas surprise for you as well and added a small sandbox testing level for you all to play around in. It’s the level the team uses for testing and though it’s simple, we hope that many of you will have lots of fun with it.

We’re still working on the multiplayer part of the game, so you don’t have to worry, we haven’t forgotten about it. It’s simply a process that takes a long time because we need to add features we haven’t counted on when we were creating the core build of the game. Changing everything so that it allows for multiplayer is very time consuming, but we won’t abandon the idea. You can expect to see it in one of the future updates.

great game worth paying the £5.59 , even though it is still early access and has a few bugs the game is still great, the story is amazing so far. i cant wait to see it finshed with new player options and hopefully they will put in a multipley feature . so with each new update you get new missions and weapons new maos and more so if your looking for a good sci-fi shooter survival style game with a great background story then this is for you :D hopefully when they finsh it they may even make a second :D.

Early Access Review
Dead Effect is an Early Access game that is worth the time and the cheap price tag. For me the look and the intensity of this game was quite enjoyable.

In the past I've been quite dismissive of Early Access titles and this has been based on a few notorious titles and the comments of famous YouTube personalities. It's not a perfect or finished game, but this is one title you don't have to worry about.

The game environment reminds me of Doom 3, and likely takes some inspiration from it. I like the graphics and it runs just fine on my old computer. The sound and music are really good and contribute to the overall experience. The voice acting isn't so great, but it's passable.

At first the game feels really slow, because it is not possible to sprint or jump; you move at one speed. The zombies don't move fast either, but when hordes of them are coming for you, the experience feels tense. If you let a couple of zombies get too close you're finished. A lack of quick save and check points adds to the tension; you really want to finish each episode in one go. If you die continuation is possible, but it'll cost you some in-game cash (don't worry, no micro-transactions or in-game spending of real world cash).

The game does have an auto-heal option, but one must play long enough to earn the right to activate this feature. It'll become clear this isn't necessary by that time anyway. I recommend never turning it on.

Included are 6 playable episodes, as well as 2 extra game modes, Survival and Biohazard. Survival mode requires fighting for a specified time, and Biohazard requires defeating a fixed number of waves of zombies. It's pretty clear from the most recent July 17th, 2014 update that these guys are hard at work. Co-op and multiplayer options are expected to be included if the development team gets enough support and feedback.

For me the game was enjoyable. I recommend it to someone looking for a gory, old school FPS experience. Considering this game is made by a team of 5 guys, I have to say: GOOD JOB!

Best 5 bucks i spent in a long time. So much fun.

I grew up playing games during the golden age of quake, doom, duke nukem etc and this is just a 2014 version of those games. Shoot everything, figure it out later.

Controls are smooth
Gunplay solid
Sound is good
Lots of gore
And a possibly deranged german doctor is also included.

So much fun to be had for very little money.

Early Access Review
It is no secret that I love this game. My firends have heard me talk about it, I've posted screenshots & videos. I just can't get enough of this game. Even as early access it has so much potential. With only 3 levels I have over 40 hours played and the devs are planning so much more content. Play this if you like horror games and/or shooters. It does have a heavy Doom feel to me (In a very good way, it doesn't feel like a rip-off), it really seems like something that ID would have developed. Of course it is early access right now so you have to accept some bugs like jump not working yet as an example. Of course I could live without the jump just saying know that it is early access and still pretty early in the development process. For the price you can't really go wrong, plus it looks like they will be adding multiplayer which will give it a whole lot more replay value. Also devs seem really responsive to the community which is another major plus.

Then that spawn had a kid with killing floor.

The usual story with most of these games, the ship has become filled with infected and you have to kill everything.

You're given a number of weapons to help you with that, they range from basic pistols to shotguns to assault rifles or an explosive crossbow or minigun. You can also carry grenades or trip mines.

As you play through the story mode you can pick up ingame credits and these are used to buy new weapons or upgrades for your current weapons, these are better accuracy, more damage, faster reload and a bigger magazine. On certain levels you'll also find an upgrade booth, here you can upgrade certain parts of your suit giving you more health, faster speed, etc.

You also have 2 abilities, one of these is bullet time which slows everything down and makes taking on bosses a little easier. The zombies range from basic with no weapons to a minigun zombie or grenade throwing zombies, these are very tough and use the other zombies as meat shields so you need to take them out quickly but the other zombies between you and them make it much more difficult.

You have different games modes too, survival, biohazard (wave based) or just pick a mission from the story once you've completed the game and just play that particular mission.

The game doesn't take long to complete but once it is complete you can replay it again as new game plus which is more difficult but you'll keep everything you earned when you completed the game previously.

The devs are working on coop and that's supposed to be added soon.

I was quite surprised by this game as I wasn't expecting it to be as much fun as it is but it does have replay value too, the wave based games with a few friends once coop has been added to the game will be a lot of fun.

Early Access Review
Dead Effect is yet another first person shooter with zombies, with some very good graphics and a pretty lengthy campaign, but also some issues with controls.Dead Effect is fully voiced, which is both a good and bad thing. It's good in that it creates a more immersive environment, which is already a bloody, dark and foreboding atmosphere, but bad in that the acting is not very good.Graphically, the game is top notch. All the various locations you visit pretty much look the same, but I guess that's expected from an industrial spaceship. The zombies are nicely detailed, and the atmospheric effects are great. At its core, Dead Effect is yet another fun shooter featuring everyone's favorite reanimated beings. You won't find anything new, but it offers a decent challenge, and has some great replayability in survival mode and trying to earn all the achievements. If you're a fan of violent, bloody, horror themed games, you'll find a good distraction in this one.

Early Access Review
TL;DR: This was a free-to-play mobile game and it shows

I feel very mixed about my recommendation for this game but ultimately I think I'm going to have to say that you should give it a pass, at least for the time being. What I can say for this game is that it's cheap, although $5 is really the most I would pay for this game. After launching the game I saw that it had an ok amount of options for such a cheap game but it seemed a bit odd in the sense that it was minimalistic looking yet not in a "modern" type way, more like a "cheap looking" kind of deal. I started up the game and played the first story mission--the graphics weren't terrible and the sound was heavily based on bass trying to raise the tension. After a minute or two it became painfully obvious that this is a port of a mobile game and it shows, even down to the "Tap to..." command prompts. Not to say that mobile ports are inherently bad, but that they do need to improve with controls and input response when ported to pc. The need to sprint is needed, especially when you have an enemy who has a machine gun and you can't make it to the next corner to take cover before they open fire again. The "Tap to..." command prompts should go along with the obvious free-to-play model of slowly upgrading weapons in a now paid port (as opposed to the free to play iOS and android versions).

So in short, it's not a terrible game, but for a free-to-play game with a free-to-play design and mobile-reminiscent controls, five dollars is five too many.

I completed the story, got all guns, and played every mode.

Story mode: No spoilers here, but I will say this.

Pro:
The story is fun to play, the levels are so nice looking to me, and there are random points where you will need to aim for heads or get swarmed. Plus if you die, you can use some of your credit(money) to buy a respawn. Which is nice if you were so close to beating it and you don't want to restart.

Con:
Story is a bit short, I beat it really quick and easy, but I believe there will be more added some day.
The voice acting at some points seems a bit weird, like when you are going to die he says nooooooo in a bit of a lazy voice.
and the beginning bothers me since the male still sounds like the female character. lol.

The enemies, all different, pretty much if you like killing floor you may like this. It seems to me like a Doom, Duke Nukem, Killing Floor, CoD zombies feel.
Every zombie has a different kind of ability that you need to keep your eye on while in small rooms.

A large selection of guns from shotguns, rifles, archery, and a freaking minigun. Whatever you like to mow zombies down with.

So far, I can't stop playing it, and once it gets co-op I may play it even more with friends.

As it is, 8/10 and hope I see more guns to get and more story added.

Review Written when game status was in *GOLD* status

Dead Effect to wrap this game up in a nutshell, the game story itself is the stereotypical "I'm stuck on a spaceship and its infested with zombies and i got to get out of here as soon as possible type of story" knowing that hey why should your purchase this game? Well their isn't really a good reason why you shouldn't buy this game. Even though the story of the game is lacking it makes up for it with content and a enjoyable gameplay experience. To add to my last statement there is also no reason why you should hate this game at all. After playing through the game about 5x i discovered that the reason why i continued to play the game over and over again is souly because i purchased it for 5$. After noticing that i also discovered that the game is completely under priced and should cost more (IMO). Knowing that in my mind i felt obligated to squeeze out every ounce of substance that the game had to offer to me for the low low price of 5$. In the end I'm satisfied with my purchase feeling that i payed to low of a price not to suck this game dry of its contents.

PROS
- It's 5 Bucks (7$ as of 12/18/14)
- It's way better than a certain AAA title *cough alien colonial marines which is 5$*
- Good amount of variety
- fun & easy to play
- good sound and effects
- endless gameplay enjoyment
- horror aspects

CONS
-No Co - Op gameplay as of yet

(IMO Completely biases - when titling a game as a survival horror game i feel that the game should have a feeling of pure despair and hopelessness like in Aliens Isolation for example. Throughout the game you become more powerful which takes away the since of hopelessness. Anyways in horror games i feel that you don't only need put someone in a atmosphere of doom and gloom you have to put them in a state of when one decisions can cost you your life like bullet conception. Anyways this is actually a arcade like game which suppose to be for fun and not difficult, knowing that it doesn't factor into the review)

Verdict
9/10
- Buy it if your bored and want something new to experience for a low price

Category Rating Notes
Gameplay 7.5 Addicting gameplay that is great for messing around or killing time. Tons of weapons, of which can be upgraded. The movement could be smoother, weapon attachments would also be a nice addition.
Graphics 6.5 Pretty nice graphics, but could definitey be improved.
Price 10 The price is perfect, well worth the $7.99.

Best one man game ive played.

For the price this is an awsome game to explore if:

You love nice graphics
You like unlocking deadly weapons (minigun included) as you progress and gain money.
You enjoy space environment
You are obsessed with guns and zombies

The only thing lacking is the story. It feels like an old fps going from door through door.

This game has the doom 3 feel but with user-friendly gameplay. You will recognize Doom 3 when you see the way monsters die and disappear on the ground after being killed.

8/10

Early Access Review
Smartly designed and compulsively playable, Dead Effect is already better in early access than most commercial games are on release.

Picture a cross between Doom 3 and Killing Floor and you'll have a basic idea of the gameplay and design concepts you're dealing with. A combination of secrets and collectibles coupled with weapon upgrades encourages replayability similar to the Raid Mode from Resident Evil Revelations. Story is simple and doesn't interfere with the carnage, and the voice acting is charmingly awkward and reminiscent of the golden age of the late 90's-early 00's.

If there's one complaint I could make it would be the rather linear weapon progression and the limited ammo pool for pistol weapons limiting the viability of more specialized weapons like the compound bow. Also there is precious little in the way of character upgrades, but hopefully these issues will be addressed in future updates.

For $5 I can't recommend this game enough, and once it gets co-op it's basically a must-buy.
