What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are making Gang Beasts available through Steam Early Access to fund development of the full game and build a community that is directly involved in informing and supporting the production of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have not set a release date for the full version of Gang Beasts, we plan to make new content, stages, character body shapes and sizes, and game modes for each Early Access release, we will review significant updates and plan for a specific full release date when the number of stages, character types, game modes, character customisations, and other content to be included in the game is finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full game will play similarly to the Early Access versions but with a full character customisation system, new stages and environments, additional character body shapes and sizes, a single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode (with multistage sub-boss and end boss fights), complex AI enemies, numerous game and tournament modes, and various mini-games to play.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version of the game is a local multiplayer game with limited support for solo play (a full single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode is planned), there are 8 playable stages in the current version with support for 2 - 8 player gang fights.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access price is the same price we plan for the full game (excluding discounts and promotions).”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want the Early Access community to inform the development of the game, specifically we want to have ongoing dialogues with the community about the game to help us identify and prioritise the key features, content, and modifications that need to be added or made and to make sure Gang Beasts as fun as it can be.”

Gang Beasts 0.2.0 Build Release Date Announcement

It has taken several months and a significant amount of work to finish porting Gang Beasts to Unity 5 with PhysX 3.3 but we are now in a position to announce 31st March as the release date for the public build of the Unity 5 version of Gang Beasts (for reference the build number will be 0.2.0).

The 0.2.0 build has fully rebuilt character animation (see 1,2,3 and 4 for some short video examples), game audio, and game management systems with a number of Unity 5 specific implementations including Global Illumination, Physically Based Shading, procedural Audio Mixing, multithreaded physics simulations, High Dynamic Range Skyboxes and Reflection Probes.

The 0.2.0 build also replaces the current game input framework with the Rewired framework (an advanced input system for Unity) with improved support for keyboard and game controllers (see the Supported Controller page for a platform specific list of currently supported controllers).

We will make additional posts with more specific information about the new game modes, stages, character moves, and other improvements coming in the 0.2.0 build before the March 31st release date.

The summary of key improvements coming in 0.2.0 build are:

  • a rebuilt character animation system (with significantly optimised performance and stability)
  • a new procedural game audio playback system (with 6 reworked music tracks from Doseone and Robert Larder)
  • a series of new voice and effect samples (for leg, thigh, hip, crotch, waist, stomach, chest, upper arm, forearm, fist, and head collisions)
  • a rebuit GUI (Graphical User Interface) using Unity\'s new UI system
  • numerous rebuilt stages (made from modular environment assets)
  • a waves mode with AI enemies (and an associated Rooftop stage)
  • improved enemy AI (AI characters can differentiate between enemies and non-enemies, AI enemies are less aggressive)
  • an exposed debbuging mode (for identifying issues with game environments, objects, and characters)
  • a prototype Day to Night cycle
  • a prototype single and co-op enemy waves game mode
  • a prototype competitive obstacle race stage
  • a prototype object destruction mode (with associated garage workshop stage)

Merry Christmas

We have added a number of Christmas themed customisations (Christmas Jumpers, Baubles, and Santa, Christmas Pudding, and Reindeer outfits) and a new fracturing ice sheet level to the current Unity 4.6 build whilst the final work on the unity 5 port is being finalised and tested.

We will continue to work on the Unity 5 port over the Christmas holiday to try to get it released as soon as we can.

About This Game

Gang Beasts is a silly local multiplayer party game with surly gelatinous characters, brutal mêlée fight sequences, and absurdly hazardous environments.

Watch in horror and amusement as gangs of floppy antagonists grab, push, pull, and shove their enemies from permanently suspended window-cleaning scaffolds, unattended ferris wheels, and commercial haulage trucks.

Gasp with shock and delight at the spectacle of stupidly pugnacious thugs punching, kicking, and throwing their foes into unspecified hazardous machinery, flaming incinerator pits, and the paths of moving trains.

Great fun and really funny for a few hours then becomes kinda boring cause it lacks depth and every match will be the same and for the content it has i think 20$ is a little overpriced.

Positives:
+ Great concept
+ great fun if you have friends to play with (up to 8 players are supported)
+ really funny and many great stages
+ nice physics

Cons:
- No online
- Devs gone silent for a few months and it seems they moved on.
- becomes boring after a while since it is severly lacking in depth.
- No bots, which means you can't play solo.

i would still recommend getting it but i would recommend waiting for a sale since it is overpriced and it seems the Devs stopped caring about the game with no updates or any news for a while.

Introduction
Gang Beasts is a local co-op party game made by Double Fine. As of now the game is in early access without a set date for a full release, but the devs have said they want to add more customizations, more maps, and more game modes. (Most of my cons should be fixed with a full release) Gang Beast is a fun comedic beat’em up that will have you and all of your friends laughing/ having a good time. Although this game is tons of fun now, I can’t deny that this game does not have very many stages, only one game mode, no online modes, and not very many customizing options, but looking through the devs plans for the future most of these problems will be fixed.
Pros

  • Tons of fun
  • Unique gameplay
  • Updates to come
  • Good ragdoll physics
  • Varied stages
  • Comedic

Cons

  • Not very many stages
  • Only one mode
  • Not very many customizations (besides costumes)

Conclusion

Gang Beasts is a blast of a game to play with friends, and you will have a great time, no doubt at all. Unfortunately, Gang Beasts is still far away from a full release. It still needs more stages, game modes, and online gameplay. I would completely recommend you to pick this up if you ever plan to have friends over. I’m sure you will have a blast.

Folks, I don't want to repeat a lot of what people have said on here. All I can say is, my 11 year old daughter and I have the most fun playing this game together. We are almost constantly laughing. The constant action and nearness to "danger" keep us on the edge of our seats, and we laugh all the way down.

I've seen in on a big screen in front of several hundred people, and I've played it on my home PC. It is just plain fun.

Like many people, I thought that $20 bucks was going to be pricey for this game. Honestly, it's the best $20 I have ever spent on a game. I'm also excited that the game is still in development, because every once in a while we get new levels, new features, and new options. It keeps getting better. In one play session, we had to stop playing because we all had headaches from laughing so hard.

10/10, would throw my friends into a fan again.

Gang Beasts is a really fun game to play, but is too overpriced for the state it is in right now.

I know it is still in Early Access, but all you can really do now is walk around and punch each other - not to mention the uncontrollable lag it brings in some maps, such as the inferno.

In my opinion, this game should be selling for $9.99 instead of $19.99. Since it is fun to play, even though the price, I still recommend you to pick this game up on sale at around $10.

7/10 in Early Access - I may change this overtime as the game changes.

At first, I thought that this game wasn't really worth $20.00, but after playing it, I regret nothing!
I would love to see a skydiving level with random debris falling with the player.

Oh ho boy, let me tell you something about Gang Beasts, man. This game is hilarious. Imagine you're drunk and you're standing on a table with a friend. You have to throw each other off without both falling down. Now, while you are doing this, other people are shifting the cloth you're standing on just to throw off your footing. That's what this game is: A drunken, physics-based brawler that puts everybody in a giggling mood. After a level is over and the new one loads up, everybody will go "Oh ♥♥♥♥..." because you are either on 2 moving trucks, a ferris wheel, gondolas, or a room with fans that suck you through a spiraling torment of laughter. Each level topping the last. It's a multiplayer only, just until a new update. The game's unfinished which means there's nowhere to go but up with this game. Fun, fun, fun. Plus it goes up to eight players, talk about madness.

A simple, yet hilarious game to play with a couple of your friends when you have nothing better to do.
I couldn't stop laughing the first time I fired this game up, the way the characters move is a big laugh on it's own!

You're basicly controlling "drunken" jelly-men and you have to fight to the death!

Since the free-alpha testing version, this has improved alot.
Whilst I still hope for many new maps and alot more different, funny looking costumes and what not.

8/10 just because it's so funny. I would give it a higher rate if it wasn't for the low variety of maps and I guess there could have been some type of challenges within the fights.

Needless to say though, while worth a couple of bucks just for the laugh.

Great Game. All of the negative reviews are idiots complaining that a game in development isn't fully developed.

That being said, I spawned a Hulk-like AI to save my life from my friend.
