What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are making Gang Beasts available through Steam Early Access to fund development of the full game and build a community that is directly involved in informing and supporting the production of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have not set a release date for the full version of Gang Beasts, we plan to make new content, stages, character body shapes and sizes, and game modes for each Early Access release, we will review significant updates and plan for a specific full release date when the number of stages, character types, game modes, character customisations, and other content to be included in the game is finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full game will play similarly to the Early Access versions but with a full character customisation system, new stages and environments, additional character body shapes and sizes, a single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode (with multistage sub-boss and end boss fights), complex AI enemies, numerous game and tournament modes, and various mini-games to play.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version of the game is a local multiplayer game with limited support for solo play (a full single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode is planned), there are 16 playable stages in the current version with support for 2 - 8 player gang fights.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access price is the same price we plan for the full game (excluding discounts and promotions).”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want the Early Access community to inform the development of the game, specifically we want to have ongoing dialogues with the community about the game to help us identify and prioritise the key features, content, and modifications that need to be added or made and to make sure Gang Beasts as fun as it can be.”

Patch notes for the Gang Beasts 0.3.4 “unstable” build and participation information on the Gang Beasts Online Multiplayer Beta

Information on participating in the Gang Beasts Online Multiplayer Beta

The signup process for participating in the Gang Beasts online multiplayer beta is open.

To manage the distribution of Steam keys for the online beta we are using the distribute() build distribution service from Vlambeer, distribute() is designed for the distribution of keys to press (please ignore Press references when submitting key requests).

Please note that the initial online multiplayer beta only supports Windows operating systems and is currently limited to three stages ('grind', 'subway', and 'trucks'), the next batch of stages that are being optimised for inclusion in the online multiplayer are 'buoy', 'gymnasium', 'ring', and 'elevators'.

The process for submitting a key requests for the Gang Beasts online multiplayer beta through distribute() has five stages, the process is:

Open the URL http://beef.city/beta in a browser

In the ‘Log in with your e-mail address:’ section (outlined with a red box in the screen capture immediately below this sentence) enter the email address you want the beta key(s) to be sent to

Check the email account you submitted for an email from noreply@dodistribute.com with the subject line “distribute() | Confirm your request” and follow the instructions for confirming the request.

To confirm the request paste the 16 character code from the last sentence of the email in to text field labelled ‘Code:’ (outlined with a red box in the screen capture immediately below this sentence) and left click on the ‘confirm request’ button or left click on the long URL on the second to last line of the email.

Please note the maximum number of keys that can be approved per request is four.

Confirming the request will open the main distribute() key request page, from this page specify the number of keys you want to request and select the ‘PC (Steam)’ setting (outlined with a red box in the screen capture below).

Ignore the 'Login with Twitch or Google (YouTube)' section unless you are a YouTube / Twitch content maker and want to associate your YouTube / Twitch account with your key submission.

In the ‘Or add your own publishing platform:’ section enter a your Steam username in ’Name:’ text field (outlined with a yellow box in the third screen capture at the end of this post) and left click the ‘request’ button to submit the request.

Please note that the online multiplayer beta keys will be sent out in batches, the first batches of keys will be sent out by email from next week with subsequent batches of keys being sent out more frequently as server capacity scales.

Patch notes for the Gang Beasts 0.3.3 “unstable” build and information on the Gang Beasts Online Multiplayer Beta

Since the last Early Access build was published in January we have been working with Coatsink to prepare the infrastructure for a public beta of online multiplayer support for Gang Beasts and are now at a stage of development where we can make a selection of the most optimised stages available to play in an online multiplayer beta for play testing and stress testing.

The online multiplayer beta will be made available through Steam as a separate build from the current ‘stable’ and ‘unstable’ alpha builds, this is necessary to preserve access to the current ‘unstable’ and ‘stable’ alpha builds (while the stages not currently included in the online beta are optimised for online multiplayer) and to give the Early Access community a specific forum for posting online specific questions, bug reports and feedback to.

Information on the three stages that are playable in the initial online beta will be posted on Steam this month (as a Steam announcement) with specific instructions on the process for participating in the online beta and information on the next batch of stages that are currently being optimised for online multiplayer. The first batches of online beta keys will be sent out by email this month with subsequent batches of keys being sent out frequently as server capacity is scaled.

The online multiplayer beta will be merged with the ’unstable’ alpha branch at a later date (when the key work on stress testing and bug fixing the networking implementation has ended and server capacity is scaled to support the full Gang Beasts Early Access community).

Whilst testing and scaling the capacity of the online beta over the next 3-4 months we will continue to push new content, optimisations, and polish to the ‘unstable’ branch, starting with the 0.3.3 ‘unstable’ alpha build published with the post.

Please post feedback and information on game bugs on the 0.3.3 "unstable" alpha build thread if you have issues specific to this build.

Please note there is no "stable" alpha build released with this post

The list of modifications and fixes made in the 0.3.3 "unstable" alpha build are:

  • added four AI character voice sets
  • added four character voice sets
  • added setting to the Input menu for enabling / disabling XInput on Windows systems (the game has to be restarted before the XInput setting is executed) *

  • restored timestep modified keys ’-‘ (deincrement timestep) and ‘=‘ (increment timestep)
* for reference enabling XInput support limits the number of concurrent XInput devices (Xbox 360 controllers and other XInput compatible controllers) to four, disabling XInput forces Xbox 360 controllers and other XInput devices to use Direct or Raw input (bypassing XInput’s four device limitation (making it possible to play with 5-8 concurrent Xbox 360 / XInput controllers), for reference disabling XInput prevents both Xbox 360 controller triggers from registering concurrently on Windows systems.

** for reference the key mappings are:
  • keys 1-8 spawn objects
  • keys 1-8 with the shift modifier key pressed spawns the default character body and binds control to the corresponding player number
  • key 9 with the shift modifier key pressed spawns the default character as an enemy AI
  • keys 1-8 with the control modifier key pressed spawns a larger character body and binds control to the corresponding player number
  • key 9 with the control modifier key pressed spawns the default character as an enemy AI

Watch in horror and amusement as gangs of floppy antagonists grab, push, pull, and shove their enemies from permanently suspended window-cleaning scaffolds, unattended ferris wheels, and commercial haulage trucks.

Gasp with shock and delight at the spectacle of stupidly pugnacious thugs punching, kicking, and throwing their foes into unspecified hazardous machinery, flaming incinerator pits, and the paths of moving trains.

This game makes you cry !
It´s too funny when you have some friends over
and play this (buggy but nevertheless) A W E S O M E game.
If you get the hang of the "drunken-squishee" controls,
you will perform absolutely stunning moves.

The menu is........ should be reworked.
The characters are adorable and the bugs are more fun than annoying^^

Whats up with all these people that bought the game expecting online mode? Maybe look to see if the game has online before buying it and leaving a negative review? This is a great game if you have friends, controllers, and a TV.

Pros
- Great Game
- Alot of Maps
- Continued Updates
- Alot of Costumes
- Up to 8 Players (Local)
- Daulshock 4 compatible

Cons
- Need Friends
- Need Controllers
- Expensive
- Terrible Keyboard Controls
- Unplayable (Unless you update to Legacy)
- No Online Multiplayer

Having said that though, online multiplayer is in a closed beta state and will continue development. Although, overall this game just doesn't provide satisfactory entertainment by yourself. :L

1. Start up "Gang Beasts".

2. Start a survival match with your buds.

3. Hilariously punch and knock each other out while not knowing the controls on interesting and unique maps.

4. Win or lose, your sides hurt from laughing too much.

5. Repeat.

Excellent game to play with your friends when you have time or just so happen to have them over... Only to introduce them to a game they'll want to play for revenge the next time they're over. So let me start off by saying for one this game is absolutely amazing and don't understand why people are giving this game so much hate when there isn't an online multiplayer.

Give me a moment to point something out
  • The game DOES have ONLINE MULTIPLAYER
  • It is, however; still in BETA
  • The way to obtain said multiplayer is not through steam itself, check out news for the game and you'll be given directions to get a key for the multiplayer.

With that out of the way the game is extremely fun when you finally get the beta for the online multiplayer. It's all in the patience since the keys for the beta are taking an extremely long time to get out to the public, but hey, it'll make the game that more enjoyable when they start giving them out a lot more often.

Adressing some of the controls I would have to recommend using an gamepad, like an xbox controller or whatever console you have that just so happens to have a usb that can be used. Incredibly difficult to use the keyboard.

Graphics are absolutely flawless with the hilarity that it comes with. Sure there are a few drawbacks with bugs within the meshes or whatever reason people have to hate on the game with because of the outrageous graphics standards some gamers have come to expect. I find the physics of this game to be hilarious and extremely enjoyable to the point that I don't even pay attention to the minor graphical details within the game or how the physics work because thats what adds to the fun of the game is to... watch it glitch or break for a few moments.

Paying attention with the recent updates with the game there are ways you can add replay-ability within the game itself even if you're going solo because for some reason you have nothing else to do. Pressing CTRL with #9 will spawn a big BEEFY (Beef city.. heh..) AI enemy for you to mercilessly bombard with headbutts and the flailing of whatever you to can throw at it only to immerge victorious and throw him into a grinder... Ahem.

This game is definitely recommended especially when you have friends over... brothers/sisters you wanna get revenge on for picking on you... or to jump on your friends when you all finally get that sweet, sweet online multiplayer key...

So, after buying this game for some time, can give a good review about this game. I will go with pros, cons and my conclusion of this game.

Pros:
The game is really fun to play. You get to beat anyone out! Like who doesn't want to beat someone out senseless, and then toss them out of the arena? its Fun and also amusing.

The game allows you to use all of your limbs in the game. You get to jump and then kick someone, you can dive onto people, and to kick and punch people, and not to forget, you can headbutt people!

The game has its charm of being cute and being a Bad***. There will be times that I can knock someone out and have them flying off the stage with just the kick. I just lose it when I see that happen.

The game plays very smooth. out of all the games I have, this plays the smoothest. I have no frame rate issues with it, and I just love it because of it. (most likely it is still the beta and there is little to no texture in the game. Still not complaining.)

Low for some cons.
Lack of multiplayer. Now, I heard that multiplayer will be in a thing in the future, but with the lack of it as of now, it is a bit boring to just do the campain.

The game is still buggy. Yes, the game is still in beta, but there is plenty of bugs in the game. not denying that it is fun nevertheless, the bugs are quite out there. (Example, At times, I will have my game shut off by itself after the match is done.)

The game has a lot of work left to be done with it. It is still an unfinish project, but at the end of the day, it is a good game as it is right now.

There are some unbalanced in the game when using certain button combos. Holding onto someone and then continuously headbutt them is kinda cheap to me. and flying kicking someone knocks them out with little to no effort.

My final conclusion: This game is something that I know for sure that I can play for a long time. Even after of how long this game has been in beta, the improvements are showing little by little, and Meatloaf is making good strives to make this game the best. Balancing can be used here and there, and the bugs needs to be fixed as soon they are discovered.

As of writing this review, Gang Beasts is still in development.

CONS:
  • No online multiplayer yet.
  • Wonky control scheme with mouse and keyboard.
  • Some low-end machines may struggle with certain levels.

PROS:
  • Absurdly fun to play.
  • To play with friends, you have to be with them, in person, together.
  • Variety of hazardous levels, large and small.
  • Great costumes and color choices for your hero.
  • Ludicrously fun to play.
  • Controller friendly.
  • Laugh so hard that your stomach hurts
  • Really a lot of fun to play

Objective
The game play is great. The objective is simple: kill your opponents. There are plenty of hazards which aid you in your quest. There are meat grinders, there are falls from sky scrapers, there are subway trains. Beat up your opponents and throw them to their doom! This is all carried out in a wonderfully goofy world populated with strangely dressed jello people who make silly noises and giggle at the misfortune of their opponents. It's incredible.

Control Scheme
I play with an Xbox 360 Controller. The default button scheme includes the left stick for movement, A/B/X/Y/LB/RB for control of various body parts. All buttons seem to have two functions: one action for a tap, and another for a hold. In the default scheme, LB and RB control the left and right arms respectively. Tapping punches, holding attempts to grasp whatever is at the end of the player's reach. This is helpful for grabbing and holding opponents. Couple this with Y which elevates the arms, and you can grab and lift an opponent over your head. Additionally, you can kick, headbutt, jump, sit, lay forward, lay backward, and many other combinations like jump kicking or climbing.

A Note to Prospective Players
While I wholly endorse this game and have had loads of fun playing with my friends, I recognize that not everyone has the option to regularly get together with a group of players in one place and play games. If you are the kind of person who can not easily and frequently get together with a few friends to play, I would caution that you wait until online multiplayer is completely finished. Multiplayer Beta is currently active! Find out how to join here. If you are in a position to be able to regularly get together with some friends and you want to laugh until you puke, check out this game.
