What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We are making Gang Beasts available through Steam Early Access to fund development of the full game and build a community that is directly involved in informing and supporting the production of the game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We have not set a release date for the full version of Gang Beasts, we plan to make new content, stages, character body shapes and sizes, and game modes for each Early Access release, we will review significant updates and plan for a specific full release date when the number of stages, character types, game modes, character customisations, and other content to be included in the game is finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full game will play similarly to the Early Access versions but with a full character customisation system, new stages and environments, additional character body shapes and sizes, a single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode (with multistage sub-boss and end boss fights), complex AI enemies, numerous game and tournament modes, and various mini-games to play.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current Early Access version of the game is a local multiplayer game with limited support for solo play (a full single player and 2 to 4 player co-op story mode is planned), there are 8 playable stages in the current version with support for 2 - 8 player gang fights.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access price is the same price we plan for the full game (excluding discounts and promotions).”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want the Early Access community to inform the development of the game, specifically we want to have ongoing dialogues with the community about the game to help us identify and prioritise the key features, content, and modifications that need to be added or made and to make sure Gang Beasts as fun as it can be.”

Merry Christmas

We have added a number of Christmas themed customisations (Christmas Jumpers, Baubles, and Santa, Christmas Pudding, and Reindeer outfits) and a new fracturing ice sheet level to the current Unity 4.6 build whilst the final work on the unity 5 port is being finalised and tested.

We will continue to work on the Unity 5 port over the Christmas holiday to try to get it released as soon as we can.

Information on the Gang Beasts 0.1.6 Build

This post has information on the coming 0.1.6 build.

We have solved the break force value issues identified in the last post but still have some stubborn tasks to finish and some testing to complete before the first Unity 5 version of Gang Beasts is released on Early Access, we expect the release to be this year but wanted to make a post to give information on the development road map for next year and information on our plans for sharing more frequent information about the development of the game following the Unity 5 release.

The work on the next release has prioritised moving Gang Beasts from the Unity 4.5 engine to Unity 5 but has also focused on removing or reducing annoyances associated with the limitations of the current control input implementation. The move to Unity 5 has meant a second significant reworking of the default character control scheme (as the PhysX 3.3 is much more exact than the system used for previous versions of the characters) but has given dramatically improved physics performance and improvements in general performance (this has temporarily slowed the development of the game but importantly gives much greater scope for interaction with physics objects).

At the same time as moving Gang Beasts from Unity 4.5 to Unity 5 we have also implemented Unity’s new Physically-based rendering (PBR) shaders and Global Illumination, we plan to share more information about these improvements in the coming weeks leading up to the release of the 0.1.6 build. We have also taken on additional freelance support to help with some development and non-development tasks (support, press, events, merchandising, legal etc.) to minimise interruptions and give the time to fully engage with Early Access.

To summarise the key technical work on the game is almost finished at which point we can start adding a glut of new content to the game, including new stages, new fighting moves, the new audio system, more character customisations, more character body types, sub-boss and boss fights, and additional game modes and environments.

There will be limited new content in the 0.1.6 release (similar to previous releases) but his will be followed by more significant content updates starting from January next year, we have setup a development log at beefcity.info to share frequent update information and other general development content (pre-viz images, play testing footage, technology tests etc.), the key content from theses posts will also be shared in weekly posts on Steam.

About This Game

Gang Beasts is a silly local multiplayer party game with surly gelatinous characters, brutal mêlée fight sequences, and absurdly hazardous environments.

Watch in horror and amusement as gangs of floppy antagonists grab, push, pull, and shove their enemies from permanently suspended window-cleaning scaffolds, unattended ferris wheels, and commercial haulage trucks.

Gasp with shock and delight at the spectacle of stupidly pugnacious thugs punching, kicking, and throwing their foes into unspecified hazardous machinery, flaming incinerator pits, and the paths of moving trains.

At first, I thought that this game wasn't really worth $20.00, but after playing it, I regret nothing!
I would love to see a skydiving level with random debris falling with the player.

Like many people, I thought that $20 bucks was going to be pricey for this game. Honestly, it's the best $20 I have ever spent on a game. I'm also excited that the game is still in development, because every once in a while we get new levels, new features, and new options. It keeps getting better. In one play session, we had to stop playing because we all had headaches from laughing so hard.

10/10, would throw my friends into a fan again.

Oh ho boy, let me tell you something about Gang Beasts, man. This game is hilarious. Imagine you're drunk and you're standing on a table with a friend. You have to throw each other off without both falling down. Now, while you are doing this, other people are shifting the cloth you're standing on just to throw off your footing. That's what this game is: A drunken, physics-based brawler that puts everybody in a giggling mood. After a level is over and the new one loads up, everybody will go "Oh ♥♥♥♥..." because you are either on 2 moving trucks, a ferris wheel, gondolas, or a room with fans that suck you through a spiraling torment of laughter. Each level topping the last. It's a multiplayer only, just until a new update. The game's unfinished which means there's nowhere to go but up with this game. Fun, fun, fun. Plus it goes up to eight players, talk about madness.

First things first: If you have neither friends nor some gamepads, this probably isn't for you.

If you have, check Gang Beasts out! It's kinda like Smash Bro's on schnapps! Invite your friends over, have some beers, and duke it out as little bullies, who are just as loaded as you! We were at least six people (I saw 12) and we played it 6 beers and a dozen shots straight! Which took about 4 hours.

Then I played it sober a few times and surprise: IT'S JUST AS GOOD!

Gang Beasts is a fun-filled game. You play as jelly-like men who have grudges over each other. The only thing they want to do is beat each other up!

Now, before getting this game, know this: If you were looking for an online multiplayer, this game doesn't support it... Yet. They could add it in the future though! You CAN play local though. You need a keyboard and a wired controller. I believe a wired Xbox Controller works. Also, there aren't any in-game tutorials so here's a quick rundown.
Standard WASD Movement- W- Up A- Left S- Down D- Right
Shift- Your arms will raise. This is helpful for picking up other Beasts.
1 Mouse Button- Clicking it, will cause you to punch. Holding it down, will make you grab at someone.
2 Mouse Button- Clicking it, will cause you to punch. Holding it down, will make you grab at someone.
E- Kick

An awesome game. Just needs a few extra features. 8/10

Gang Beasts is one the best local multiplayer experiences available, no question. I have played this countless hours leading up to this Early Access release and I am thorougly excited about the new features and goofiness that awaits.

There is something incredibly appealing about watching plasticine-looking somewhat drunk people punch each other in the face and throw each other into dangerous situations.

If you're having some friends over for a gathering, grab some controllers and play this gem. I have not heard this much screaming since the original Smash Brothers.

We will continue to make this our end of week game in our studio, good job Boneloaf. All the best. Looking forward to every moment that Gang Beasts has to offer.

*EDIT To clarify my 'countless hours' into the game. There has been an earlier copy available for months that I have been playing obsessively with work mates and friends. The Steam copy has lots of new features and tweaks that make it far superior to the old 0.0.1 - 0.0.3 version that were previously available.

I heard about this game two days ago. That night I downloaded it. Today I bought it and had some friends over. It is hands down one of the best party/local multiplayer games I have ever played. We played for three hours straight, and we only stopped because they had to leave.

Highly recommended.

While people are complaining about the local only and such, I'm absolutely loving the local play. Being a college student with friends who happen to have Xbox controllers and such lying around, this game is loads of fun!

Gang Beasts is a really fun game to play, but is way to overpriced for the state it is in right now.

I know it is still in Early Access, but all you can really do now is walk around and punch each other - not to mention the uncontrollable lag it brings in some maps, such as the inferno.

In my opinion, this game should be selling for $9.99 instead of $19.99. Since it is fun to play, even though the price range, I still recommend you to pick this game up on sale at around $10.

7/10 in Early Access - I may change this overtime as the game changes.

I frickin' love Gang Beasts. Has a lot of the type of fun not dissimilar to Super Smash Brothers or button mashy fighting games. After a thirty minute test run, it can be observed the game runs quite well even when eight players are on screen, and even at the lowest setting the game still looks very asthetically pleasing. Coming from someone who played the free pre-alpha for at least 30 hours with different groups of friends and had an absolute blast doing it, i can say i'm very excited for upcoming updates and encourage you to buy a few gamepads and round up some friends to try it; it's really the best party game i've ever played.

Pros:
- Pretty cheap, indie price. (20 dollars, 15 dollars)
- Lots of update potential from new developer. (It's also being produced by Double Fine.)
- Functional and smooth running.
- A good amount of levels ranging from wrestling rings and highways, to ferris wheels and meat grinders.
- People in fox suits beating the tar out of people in chicken suits on top of moving trucks.

Cons:
- When running a lot of physics calculations (especially at 8 players), the FPS can chug a bit.
- Climbing at it's current state is difficult to pull off.
- No way to rebind controls.
- The very fun sandbox level has been removed, but hopefully not for long.
- Above all, the game is in EARLY ACCESS, which means it is going to have features added constantly. While the game isn't bare bones, it lacks a single player mode and a few other features. Support the developers if you can. :)

In closing, Gang Beasts is a game i've had a lot of fun with, and patiently await more updates while i dangle my friends over pits of fire.

A simple, yet hilarious game to play with a couple of your friends when you have nothing better to do.
I couldn't stop laughing the first time I fired this game up, the way the characters move is a big laugh on it's own!

You're basicly controlling "drunken" jelly-men and you have to fight to the death!

Since the free-alpha testing version, this has improved alot.
Whilst I still hope for many new maps and alot more different, funny looking costumes and what not.

8/10 just because it's so funny. I would give it a higher rate if it wasn't for the low variety of maps and I guess there could have been some type of challenges within the fights.

Needless to say though, while worth a couple of bucks just for the laugh.

Great Game. All of the negative reviews are idiots complaining that a game in development isn't fully developed.

That being said, I spawned a Hulk-like AI to save my life from my friend.
