Now let me get this of my chest first, with the graphical style this game has i should not have been creeped out as much as i have been, but beleive me when i say this game freaked me out on more than one occasion.
And thats the real appeal of this game it creeps you out when you least expect it and it tells one hell of a good story, and my one and only gripe with it is that i have finished it now and i have to wait for the next season to be released.
Down to brass tacs ,the graphics really are one of this games defining moments and even though it isnt and doesnt look that scary it "DARN WELL IS" (so live with it),the sound (no dialogue as all the characters words are up on screen for you to read) in this game really adds to the "CREEP YOU OUT" factor and is (in my opinion) the best thing abvout the game.
The story is rich with intrigue and mystery and to say to much about it would spoil your enjoyment of what is a well put together and well written experience, lets just say your character receives a letter to go see his old friend and of he goes and then you embark on a dark and dangerous journey which will all become clear as you play and delve further into its mystery.
Now as i played i couldent help but wonder if the developers have an appriciation for things "LOVECRAFTIAN" (is that a word-WELL IT IS NOW) as i have read all of H.P.LOVECRAFT'S works and felt that this wouldent have been out of place in an omnibus of his stories and dark tales, and that is a great thing as you never really know whats going on until that little bit of detail that lets you have an insight into its dark tale and it also does so in the same vein as the best that LOVECRAFT has to offer.
Will you enjoy the dark and twisted journey this game takes you on,well yes if you like a dark tale and one that is told with a true passion for the genre but if thats not you allways remember that those "BIRDS" outside your window may be watching you and they may just may speak your name next and if they do there will be no place to hide................................"WHATS THAT SCRATCHING AT THE WIND..........................................(and then there was naught but the silence of the grave and its cold embrace)

'The Last Door' is a classic point and click adventure game. So much so that you can play the entire thing with only the use of the mouse. The graphics are beautifully designed pixel graphics that never feel like you are losing atmosphere. The story is intriguing and interesting with a feeling of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and has been called “A Love letter to H.P. Lovecraft” by Penny Arcade.

The music composed by Carlos Viola is phenomenal. In fact I would say that it is now in my top 3 most loved video game soundtracks after playing this game and worth the purchase price by itself. You can download the soundtrack from the website (https://thelastdoor.com/index.php/soundtrack), although they have plans to include it in an update at some point in the Collector's Edition on Steam. Here's a bit of a taste from the Chapter 1 OST, which should give you some feeling as to the atmosphere of the game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPkdM6T4uE0

This is a story of a young man named Jeremiah Devitt, who receives a letter from an old school friend he has not seen in many years with a cryptic message that makes Devitt know something is wrong. Dealing with his own psychological issues in which he tries to remember his past he traverses back to places from his younger days in Victorian England to try and remember what they had all gotten themselves into all those years ago. Once arriving at his friend's home he finds that his journey is just beginning and we are taken through a strange occultist tale.

Gameplay is simple point and click adventure fare with no real annoyances from my experience. Everything works as it should and feels natural. The game contains many puzzles that you must work out to move on as all the classic adventure titles do. Most are fairly simple with just trying items out in different ways until you find a match, but you will be required to read the many notes you find in the game to get some tips on what some of the puzzles entail. Found letters will give you clues on how to pass certain areas based on their eerie nature.

Achievements are included and lead you some in places you may get stuck, but there are even more secrets beneath the surface that you may never discoever without a bit of help. One achievement entitled Master of the Occult tasks you with finding every secret in the game, and these are not at all easily identified. Odds are you will need to use the Guide in the community hub to find these, but they add a lot of flavor to the game that makes for some strange and sometimes creepy easter eggs.

The Collector's Edition that is available on Steam is a more polished and put together package than the free to play version that is on the website (https://thelastdoor.com/). There you must download each episode one by one, and it doesn’t include the 4 mini-sodes that the CE does, nor does it have them combined as one game like the CE does. Also, most obviously, the free version doesn't include Steam Achievements, or trading cards. Even though you can play the entire season of the game for free on the website, this game deserves compensation. It is far better than the vast majority of adventure games currently on Steam in almost every respect. Story, art, and music. So please consider either purchasing it on Steam, or making a donation on the website itself if you enjoy it. :)

This is considered to be Season 1 of 'The Last Door', which includes 4 Chapters/Episodes as well as 4 mini-sodes for a look at certain other people and situations that were not shown in the main game with our main character. The Season 2 episodes have just started to come out with Episode 1 being released about 6 weeks ago on the Last Door website. Episode 2 is expected to be released in early 2015. Currently, Episode 1 can only be played if you make a donation of at least $1, but when Episode 2 is released in early 2015 Episode 1 will be available for free download while Episode 2 will then be the one that needs a donation to be played immediately until Episode 3 comes out. They have not announced any plans to release a Season 2 Collector's Edition on Steam after it is complete, but I would wager that it will be done.

A well made point and click adventure that deserves to be compensated for the quality it provides. It is well worth the purchase price for adventure fans, and the original OST is worthy of being mentioned among the best in all fo video games. Highly recommend this game to fans of the genre.

8/10 Worth it at full price, but must buy when on sale.

+ Beautifully crafted retro graphics
+ Excellent, tense atmosphere
+ You don't need to be a scientist to solve the puzzles
+ The music is brilliant

+/- The story, or at the least this first season, doesn't feel finished or wrapped up by the time it ends and leaves a lot of questions unanswered

- No way to make sense of it all without playing future seasons (ignore this part if the upcoming episodes are free and will be included in this package)
- Does it really need episodes to tell its story (yeah, I get the funding part behind it all) ?

I enjoyed this one far more than most AAA games I've recently played. I didn't think I could get scared by a bunch of pixels I could barely understand the shape of, but I was wrong. Great atmosphere, well written story. You can really feel the "cosmic horror" Lovecraft taught us about.

The Last Door is a classic point-and-click mystery horror investigation game based heavily around religious, scientific, and philosophical beliefs. This episodic series is very similar to games like the Sherlock Holmes series, The Secret of Monkey Island, Loom, Maniac Mansion, etc, but has an extreme creepy feel to it--in a good way.

Throughout the game, you try to uncover a dark mystery surrounding England in the 1800's after you learn about your old friend's suicide. From here, you traverse through places of your memories, and find leads of where to go next, as you interact with objects and solve puzzles on the way to your objective, whatever that may be.

The graphics of the game do not do the game any justice, but as that look was intended, it adds to the VERY creepy feeling of the game, like you are part of an Edgar Allen Poe novel. Meanwhile, the game's amazing soundtrack--mainly composed of classical piano--carries the game and will send chills down your spine as you slowly pick up more of the story.

The puzzles are somewhat simple in Season One, but should still throw out a decent challenge for the average gamer. But the events that happen during the game as you are searching for clues certainly add to the level of creepiness, and doesn't make puzzle-solving seem redundant in any case.

This game is absolutely fantastic and is a must-buy for anyone who is wanting a new indie game to play, or perhaps doesn't want to invest too much time or money in one, and is most definitely one to buy if you enjoy playing murder mysteries/horror games.

I play a lot of so called "pixel adventures" but The Last Door takes pixelation to a new extreme: sometimes it wasn't even immediately obvious what I was seeing. Add to that the lack of voice acting, and I was reluctant to try it. However, I soon discovered these are more deliberate design choices than artistic or technological shortcomings.

The game isn't particularly text heavy, but playing it very much gave me the impression of reading a classic horror novella. This is not just down to the 19th century setting and macabre style, or even its homages to Poe's short stories. It's more the de-emphasis of graphics and the old school Sierra-esque, almost poetic descriptions given when you examine your surroundings. It also occasionally employs a silent film aesthetic, cutting between captions and slides during cutscenes.

I feel all these things are executed well, because they add style, imagination, drama and depth without ever throwing a wall of text at you. They successfully took all these forms of classic written media and used video game interactivity, plus the occasional well-placed sound, music or jump scare, to enhance the experience. At times I found myself creeping forward, ever so slowly, ready to bolt, as if it were going to make any difference in a point & click!

The Last Door's strong points are story, atmosphere, tension and way above average use of (stereo!) sounds. I highly recommend playing this one with headphones. I don't feel the graphics are particurly interesting, and (perhaps only because occult horror is far from my favourite genre) it's not my favourite point & click of the year or anything, but I am glad I played it and I'd recommend it if either you're into this kind of horror, or you just want to try something different.

This dark side scrolling thriller is only limited by its graphics. The story will catch you and hold you to play until the end only to ask for more. The game came from their official website were it was an in-browser, as well as downloadable by episode but you had to donate to play every episode of it, but now with its release on steam it makes the whole process a whole lot easier. The game has a very definitve story and hours of gameplay that seems to always suprise the gamer. This game is an art, not maybe by if graphics if you don't appreciate pixel art, but most of all in its rich thriller story book feel and ability to challenge you to become the protaganist and solve the events unfolding around you as your life drives into a dark and mad journey.

An enjoyable mix of poe/lovecraft/hammer horror, the game is both chilling and sinister to play. It's a simple point and click adventure, but with tones that are morbid and grim. It truly is the best horror point and click adventure I have played. Perhaps the only one. I look forward to season 2 to see how this continues. Simply brilliant, and well written tale of the "otherside".

In one word: Extraordinary.

I bought this game because the pixel art seemed really nice (and it is, it's gorgeous) but The Last Door proved to be an excellent graphic adventure. A little easy, maybe, nowadays it's (sadly) pretty common in this genre, but totally worth your time and money. The story is very well written and absolutely compelling, if you like oldschool horror/mistery writers there's a 100% chance you'll love this game. The gameplay is simple, but it totally works in its context. I have to admit I didn't expect The Last Door to be THIS good, it is hands down the biggest surprise of my 2014.

I also think it's important to mention that the story ends with a major cliffhanger, the plot will continue in Season 2.

There I was sitting on my bed, looking for a game to play suddenly I saw a wild Bundlestar fly in through my window. It had a price tag in it's mouth and it was for The Last Door, I grabbed it thinking oh not another bad indie game I thought to myself. But then I heard the Bundlestar whisper... "nevermore". I gasped, looked at it saying... But how? and again it repeated "nevermore" as it stared at my wallet, I fed the Bundlestar and in return I was given The Last Door, which was indeed a great reward. Mystery/Horror with carefully crafted puzzles... I was pleased, then just 5 hours later the Bundlestar returned and looked at me once more and said "nevermore" and it was then I knew, I found a game worthy of scoring it a solid 10/10.

As someone that played the first episode of The Last Door when it was free on newgrounds.com, I was very excited to see this collection on steam.

After finishing the four episodes included in this collection, I can honestly say my excitment was very justified. The Last Door is an indie point and click horror game with 8bit graphics, and (as I'm sure you've gathered already) is unlike anything I've played before. The narrative is very intriguing and every episode leaves you wanting to play more. That being said, I am very eagerly awaiting more episodes to be available in the steam store.

My only complaint would be that some of the hints based on items you pick up are incredibly vague. It left me with moments in the game where I would sit and wonder 'How in the hell would anyone have progressed if they hadn't looked up a walkthrough?'. But the majority of the game is well thought out and there's a good feeling of accomplishment when you solve puzzles.

This game is absolutely incredible, it is the perfect horror confection, combining amazing atmosphere, well-placed jumpscares and an enticing storyline. The fact that it isn't obsessed with graphics means that the story and ambience shine through. But, don't expect bad graphics, as this is the perfectly pixelated masterpiece! There aren't enough good words to describe this game, so if you are contemplating buying it, DO IT! This is the perfect game for people who enjoy horror, or for people who just want a good scare. Whatever the case, I recommend it fully.

I saw this game a while ago and was intrigued by it. It sat in my wishlist until the summer sale and I picked it up for a few bucks. From the very first scene of the game I was hooked. Its dark, rich story drives you to keep playing and even with the low res this game manages to be beautiful and scary. The ambient music also adds another dimension that can make a scene feel somber or frightening. It is a true point and click, you only use your mouse to play this game. Even in it's simplicity there is so much to do and to discover. I can, without a doubt or even having finished the game, say that this is one of my favorite games I picked up from the summer sale.

Refreshingly simple graphics and beautifully placed music that really kept the focus on the intriguing story. I have to admit there were several moments (particuarly one in Episode 1) that made me jump and some really disturbing plot twists. A few puzzles did seem to require a big leap of logic but overally they were pitched at the right level. Overally I loved it, and can't wait for more!

I've played my share of point and click games. They are my absolute favorite kinds of games. It doesn't seem right to just call The Last Door a point and click though. It's so much more. A lot of people look past the point and click genre because they feel that's all there is too it. You get a scene, gotta find some item, find item, next scene. People feel like there's really nothing to these kinds of games, that they don't have any kind of gameplay whatsoever. They don't give you enough. But that's not what The Last Door does. It gives you so much more.

The Last Door is an episodic, horror point and click set in 1800s England. You might think due to it's low-res graphics you couldn't possibly be scared by playing this game. But that's exactly what makes it so creepy. I never new pixelated blood could unerve me so much. You play as Jeremiah Devitt, and he's just recieved a strange and urgent letter from an old school mate of his named Anthony. Upon entering his house, you notice that it is oddly deserted. No servants, no wife, no Anthony. The only evidence that people once lived there are scattered notes you find in different areas of the house. Each detailing the bizzare behaviors that Anthony has been exhibiting. Concerened for his friend, Devitt searches the house for clues. That's when he slowly starts to discover the disturbing story of Anthony, and his own past that all leads back to a ritual he and his friends performed at their old bording school.

You learn something new and gain more information of the story within each episode. The atmosphere is gloomy, the music is dramatic, and the story is something straight out of Edgar Allan Poe's notebook. Despite being short (you can easily finish the entire first season in one sitting) it is well worth the play. If you're a fan of good story telling and creepy pixelated crows, The Last Door is a must to satisfy that blood on the wall hunger.

The Last Door is incredible. If you love point and click games with classy, fabulous storylines and beautiful music, this is the game for you. Part of me wanted to think that it wouldn't be as creepy because of the low-res art style, but honestly, it adds to the horror factor.

This game is also relatively challenging. I found myself stuck at times, not knowing what to do next, which is surprising because usually I can blow through games like this quickly. There are a couple of funny acheivements to unlock, as well as occasional humerous banter with yourself, which helps to relieve some of the darker aspects of the game. (Fellow dark humors, rejoice.)

Overall? Creepy, classy, well written, great point and click gameplay system, and you get to wear a top hat. 10/10.

I remember playing this masterpiece on the official website while the other episodes were still being made.
Although i only played Ep 1 to later get lost on the manny updates i follow.
Finding this gem on a bundle on Indiegala made my day, i am now proud of being one of the manny to own a copy of this beautiful game, i was also thinking in joining the translation team to translate it to my precious Portuguese language to give the said community a taste of this amazing game.
Love the the story in this game, its just so immersive and fascinating, it is without a doubt the best adventure point & click game i´ve ever played in years, and as a fan of pixelated adventure point-click, i just couldn´t let this one escape, especially after Ep1, it is indeed a fascinating game.
I recommend this classic to the retro/old time gamers out there, you wont regret having this masterpiece on your library.
I know i dont.
