About This Game

High above the lame Mortal Realm rests the cloud-wreathed towers of the Wizard Keep.
It is a place where robes never go out of style, and beards are totally awesome.

But then the badguys attack, and Versimos is kidnapped!

Luckily for Versimos, he has three students who will stop at nothing to get a passing grade, and if that means rescuing their teacher from the treacherous Morg Mountains, then so be it.

Brent - Wields a sword. Kind of boring.
Nyn - Wields two swords. Awesome.
Vienna - Commits murder with her bare hands. Talks to cats. Doesn't wear shoes.

  • Leveling system built around exploration, not grinding.
  • Abridged Mode will abbreviate all the game's dialogue, keeping the focus on the action.
  • Completionist-friendly loot system. All weapons/items have a reserved slot in your inventory and a hint as to their general location.
  • Equipment possesses both benefits and drawbacks. Creative combinations yield the best results.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Windows XP or newer
    • Memory: 600 MB RAM
    • Graphics: 1280 x 720 resolution or better
    • Storage: 1500 MB available space

One of the top Castlevania clones you've never played. Look past the weird artwork and you'll find an extremely playable game with three different characters, each with their own playstyles and unique abilities. Breakable walls, hidden areas, new abilites to find, shops, relics, this game's got a little of everything you'd expect to find in a SOTN-alike.

And it does it admirably.

Awesome game, tons of fun. Although it is a bit short of a game, you can beat the game twice in about 6 hours. (Mind you I accidently left the game on one night so I kind of have twice that logged). It's even a great game to be competitive with for speed running since you can get through it in less than half an hour. Where the game lacks is the characters; You'll manly be playing as Vienna due to her speed and high jump ability making it easier to get places and Nyn for her destructive swordplay. Brent could have been better if the magic system was a little more forgiving on mana regen.

TLDR Section~
Pros:
- Good animation
- Awesome art style
- Fun... Lots of fun.
- Each character feels unique and their playstyles are actually disguishable
- Well written story with a hilarious abridged version available.
- The music is epic.

Cons:
- Short. As you can tell by reading the other comments, people have only put in 3-6 hours and 100% the game.
- Character swap mechanic is underutilized.
- Dance of the Gnomes aka The Toll-A-Warp music.

A quick metroidvania style game. I played through and saw 96% of the game and got 80% of the items in six hours. There is no grinding and level ups were based on exploration. It was funny too.

TL;DR: I usually can't be bothered to beat a game without several endings twice, let alone speedrun it. I did both of those things with this one. I can't think of a higher praise.

Magicians & Looters is a metroidvania, basically a nonlinear action platformer. You can switch between three characters, all of which get several unique abilities needed to bypass obstacles. They also fight in different ways – one is focused on all-out DPS and blitzing (which is basically filling a rage bar and getting buffed for a limited time), one on mobility and special moves, and the last one on defense and spellcasting (however, mana regen is quite slow, so you will be hitting things with his sword a lot anyway).

I have found the gameplay to be fun, with just the right amount of challenge. I also like looking for secrets, and this game is filled to the brim with them. Exploration is rewarded with experience orbs, which level up and improve your characters, items with many unique properties suited for different playstyles, and money, which you can spend to buy more items at shops or to utilize one of several "Toll-a-Warp" quick travel stations. The variety of moves each character has isn't too big, so combat can become a bit repetitive. The number of enemy types isn't too high either. However, the game is well-paced with combat interspersed with platforming, so none of those become too much of an issue. A special mention goes to bosses, several of whom I have found to be quite original and fun to beat.

The aesthetic is simple and functional, but pleasant to look at. The soundtrack won't blow you away, but the tunes are relatively catchy. The highlight of the game is its writing – while the story isn't deep or complex at all, there is a huge amount of absolutely hilarious dialogue and banter between the characters. The game pokes fun at many different fantasy and videogame cliches. You can choose to switch on an "Abridged mode", which makes the dialogue less verbose, but keeps some of the fun. There are also 3 randomly chosen beginnings with different dialogue and I recommend you play all of them. I have been playing many "serious" games lately, and this was a welcome breath of fresh air.

The technical aspect of the game is quite solid. It runs well and I didn't find many bugs. The only issues that I did run into is that an enemy once teleported behind an unbreakable locked gate which required me to beat all enemies in the room to open (I just had to run out of the room to reset it), and a few times the game got stuck mid-room transition. The only solution I have found for that is restarting the game, which results in lost progress. Fortunately, the game is very generous with the amount and placement of save spots, and the issue itself only happened two times in my 10 hours of playing.

Overall I recommend Magicians & Looters to anyone seeking a light-hearted metroidvania with just the right amount of challenge. However, even if you aren't a fan of this genre, there is a lot to like in this game.

What a fantastic game! At first, the jokes seem really dumb and out of place, but the theme keeps up throughout the game and it ends up being really funny! Story is shallow, but perfect for the theme. Couldn't ask for more.

Pros:
+ Beautiful animations
+ Beautifully laid out Metroidvania map
+ Lots of unlocks and secrets
+ Game makes great use of all 3 characters
+ Great price-point, especially on sale
+ Controller support
+ Streams with perfect fidelity

Cons:
- Character portraits a pretty ugly
- Story is not very deep
- No Linux support, but streams great (didn't try wine this time around)

tl;dr: buy this immediately.
