Pajama Sam is a Humongous point and click adventure game released during the mid 90s. It was the third series Humongous made after Putt Putt and Freddi Fish, and proved to be one of the most successful. Today it's well regarded as one of the best games that the developer ever made, and for being one of the very first games Jeremy Soule of Elder Scrolls fame worked on.

The premise is Pajama Sam is a child who is afraid of the dark. Inspired by his favorite comic book hero Pajama Man, he decides to journey into his closet to combat "Darkness". He finds himself trapped in "the Lands of Darkness". Where he must find his belongings and finally confront Darkness. What I like about the story is it has this very epic feel to it but the entire story is framed as being part of a child's imagination. The "lands of darkness" resemble Mordor but are littered with things you'd find in a closet like socks and lunchboxes. Moreover Pajama Sam himself is a very likeable protagonist who grows as a character over the course of his journey and it has a very nice somber ending.

Much like other Humongous games Pajama Sam also contains random elements. The locations of all of Pajama Sam's missing gadgets are randomized every playthrough. Meaning what locations are mandatory varies from playthrough to playthrough. This makes the game much more replayable, albiet to compensate for the general short length of the game. Alongside that the game has collectables in the form of socks that you can locate throughout the game. This was so well recieved that Humongous would later create a puzzle game devoted to this.

Among all of Humongous's games the Pajama Sam trilogy remains one of my favorite. It's one of my favorite adventure games and I've replayed it several times. It has a blend of polish that is very rarely seen in games even today, and I dearly recommend it to fans of children's games and fans of games that tell a good story.

THIS GAME OH MY GOODNESS, nostalgic af and it was beautiful. You assist sam on his quest to end the life of the oh so evil Darkness. You play mini games in the park and take rides on an abandoned mine cart with rusted wheels. Good family fun????

Sam is a little boy fan of a super-hero. However, tonight, it's the first time he'll sleep without the light. He really wants to do it but he's afraid of Darkness, a evil enemy. So, he turns into Pajama Sam, a super-hero and is resolved to capture his nemesis so that he can sleep without fear....

Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside is a game aimed at children: it's a point-&-click adventure, with minigames in it, though they're not all needed to advance. The story can also speak for the little ones: it's showing Sam willing to sleep without light and getting over his fears. Kids can relate to him.

But to manage to do so, Sam is living an extraordinary adventure: he looses his flashlight, lunchbox and mask because trees are stealing them and before confronting Darkness, he needs to find them and retrieve them. Sam will have to show for example to Otto the boat that wood is floating, to oil the wheels of the wagon, etc..

What I realized is that the game is random: indeed, you have each time two possible locations for the items and so, a different solution for them (for example, the mask was with the carrot, I had to free the carrots in the fridge to get it - however, the mask would have been in the dance room, I would have made an invisibility potion). And I also liked the fact that you can choose your path in the mine. It means that you can find new locations, useful or not depending the "storyline" thrown at you. And as you're also in a quest to retrieve all socks in the game, some of them are there - be quick to click on them as Sam will not stop at them.

There is a minigame where you need to answer questions. And while one of them is tied to Darkness's domain, the others are about culture. However, I don't know if knowing how much fuel does a space shuttle need is pertinent. It's something very specific. Other questions were more general like the artist having paint Mona Lisa or the dinosaurs. There are also a Tic-Tac-Toe with crackers and cheese, a Snake-like game, a music room where you can hear several tunes, a laboratory where you can make many potions, ...

While I found the gameplay nice, Pajama Sam is also a testimony of its era: the '90. Indeed, in educational games or in children games, you tend to throw a lot of information. Big Thinkers, from the same developers/publishers, if you remember my review, were also full of items you can click and look at a special animation. Many easter eggs are also included: you can find Freddi Fish and Luther, Putt-Putt and Pep, characters from the same house.

Another thing is a testimony of the '90: the graphics themselves. However, contrary to Big Thinkers, Pajama Sam seems to have less aged. The soundtrack is also good.

The good surprise was the fact that the game is in French (and support other languages). It means that children will not need adults to translate or help them understand a foreign word. While the adults are still needed for anything else, it's a burden in less for them, particulary if they're not fluent at all with English.

But there is a little problem too: the inventory is showing itself by putting the cursor at the bottom of the screen. It's how you can find the menu too. There is no main menu, no tutorial about the keys to use, etc.. I had to search in a forum how to save, after having to exit the game and come back later - no progress was saved. I don't know if I was expecting it to be saved as in Big Thinkers but the lack of a profile was my first clue to that. So if you need to save and load, press S and L. It's apparently something related to the system used so that the game can run on recent machines.

Pajama Sam is really a good little moment for both children and adults. It may also be an help to get over fears. If I look into the second title, it's about thunders, so, I suppose that Pajama Sam was conceived to help children understand that some of their fears can be conquered. Anyway, if you search for a good children games, Pajama Sam should be considered to be in your list.

Short and easy point & click adventure with great voice work and some clever writing. I have very fond memories of this game as a kid; glad to see it still holds up. I still haven't found all the socks.

I was brought before the devil.. He peered at me with his glowing yellow eyes, echoing greed across the craven cavern. Or rather, I was cravenly, for I had been presented to Satan himself. But I held fast, knowing these might be my last words I may ever speak again.

"Let's make a deal, you son of a ♥♥♥♥♥."

The devil smirked, for he had made a million handshakes over a million deals, and this one would be no different. Men had cowardly traded their souls for greed, power, women. What would be the predictable request of this one?

"Speak."

I gulped, for gulping was quite the only appropriate response. Hesitantly, I returned fire.

"Half Life 3. You give me Half Life 3, and I give you my soul."

The lord of hellfire stroked his mangled beard. A proposition so ridiculous, there was certainly a string attached loosely, but a string Satan himself wanted to attach.

"Too easy. Your soul? Please. I have billions upon billions."

I recoiled, then fired back.

"Then what do you have in mind?

Satan once again gave his beard a tug, deep in thought. He carefully perused his mind for ideas, then rested upon one only he could conjure up. A nightmare so nightmarish that a nightmare would never hold a candle.

"You will get your Half Life. I will promise that. But you will do something for me."

"... Yes. Yes, what do you want?"

"You will play a game that few play, a jewel lost in the desert of Steam. You will make a pilgrimage. You will play Pajama Sam. You will be afraid of the dark that shrouds the outside, you will quiver and hide in terror."

I stumbled backwards, jumbling and fumbling, I could not comprehend his request. It was that of a villain, a villain who could be none other than the demon who guards the gates of Hell.

"Very well, and if I don't?"

"I will take your soul at this very moment, and that will be the end of it. You will never see Gordon Freeman wield a crowbar ever again."

"So what, I just play this stupid game and get Half Life 3?"

The devil smirked, for tricks and turns were his finely tuned speciality.

"No, it is not the mere act of playing, but the act of dedication, of concentration, of disassociated delusion."

I put my foot forward, taking part no more in his babbling.

"Enough riddles, demon. Explain what I must do."

A long pause seperated the two for what could have been an entire eternity.

"One thousand hours. You will play Pajama Sam for a thousand hours."

I think he wanted to break me. I knew he wanted to break me. But I had come this far, and I would not be beat.

"It's a deal,"

The fallen angel adopted an expression of absolute shock.

"Excuse me?"

I firmly restated my position.

"It's a deal, you son of a ♥♥♥♥♥. I will put in my time. I will conquer this game again, and again, and again, a thousand agains until the time count brings you to your knees."

"You're a fool."

"No. You see, I'm not afraid. I won't hide."

"You won't hide?"

"Not when it's dark outside."
