New Update and A New Language Available

Hello Everyone,

A new update for Freddi Fish is now available which contains the following:

  • I have updated ScummVM from 1.6.0 to 1.7.0 across Windows, OS X and GNU/Linux.
  • opengl_nearest is the new display renderer. This provides really sharp looking graphics and also ensures 100% Steam Overlay functionality for Windows. It runs at your monitors current resolution.
  • I have completely re-written the shell launcher for GNU/Linux and implemented a new libraries system. This should allow for many more users of GNU/Linux to play the game and not just people on the latest versions of Ubuntu and Mint.
  • The Modern ScummVM skin now works on GNU/Linux. You can access the ScummVM menu by pressing CTRL+F5 (or Fn+F5 for Mac OS X) at any time.
  • ScummVM source code has been updated to 1.7.0. SDL source code is now included.

Also, I'd like to officially announce that the Norweigan version of the game is now available for all customers.

Enjoy the update and thank you for playing :)

Prepare to leap out of the frying pan, and into the fiery bowels of hell's own molten magma kitchen stove in this all but candid, gritty, action thriller. Slay demons, vanquish peons, melt down physical embodiments of your own nightmares into piles of smoldering ash. Play as the gleaming jaws of justice known as Fredrick E. Fish with your glorious sidekick who owns the appearance of those peas you would always push around with your fork at the dinner table. Never again feel an empty hole within you, void of fish gutting, fin serating, slime slinging action; it is now right here at your fingertips' disposal. The only thing I could do when I launched this game was try and pick my jaw up from the floor due to the explosive impact of my kelp seeds being cast into oblivion. I can't give this game a 10/10, it would be too meager. Fish/10, would find my kelp seeds again.

This is a great classic game that my daughters love. The game runs very smoothly on Linux Mint 16, with bright visuals and good sound. The characters' voice work is amusing and there is plenty to explore. Great game!

I'm not going to try to write a "real" review for Freddi Fish and The Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds, because at this point it seems rather unnecessary. Originally released almost two decades ago as an easy, semi-edutainment children's adventure game, it was among the very first PC games I ever played and I still have quite a few fond memories of the numerous hours I spent trying to solve the mystery which now seems so utterly simple.

Flash forward to today and I'm once again joining Freddi and Luther, only this time I'm not playing in accompany with my three year old niece, who can barely use a mouse but found the colorful world of one of Humongous Entertainment's most enduring games utterly engrossing. I wouldn't have expected it to hold up in modern day, nor hold any interest for kids anymore, but to my surprise it became a great moment of uncle/niece bonding that has now renewed my fond memories of the game and added some new ones.

If you have no nostalgia for Freddi Fish and are just looking for a decent adventure game you probably won't get much out of the experience, but personally I was pleasantly surprised just how entertaining it still was for new and old audiences alike. I also discovered it was headed by Ron Gilbert of all people, a fun fact that just makes me love the game all the more.

An epic tale of how a fish and his egotistical, greedy friend (appropriately named luther) prevent starvation, take down a mob boss and return to grandma.

A game well-geared at young kids, having much to explore and puzzles that require thinking on where to go without being overly challenging. Since this is one of the earliest Humongous games, it has a easy-to-follow linear story, with only 3 concise clues and straightforward instructions from the characters. One of the childhood games I grew up with, hence the nostalgic bias toward it, but it's well worth the fun that kids (and the family) can enjoy.
