Fans of the classic adventure games by Sierra will be right at home when playing this. Taking heavy inspiration from the Quest for Glory Series (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quest_for_Glory) that was released throughout the 90s the game doesn't fail to live up to it's high standards.

The story is pretty straight forward and once again pays homage to the Quest for Glory series. Like in the older title you are a hero(ine) who is suddenly stranded in a foreign land and then forced to deal with impending doom. The story takes many twists and turns along the way and is intricately crafted to keep you on your toes.

The gameplay is equally inspired. You have a choice of three character classes to chose from when you start. Each class has their own unique traits and skills. The enjoyable part is, much like the classics, each obstacle you face can usually be solved in different ways. Magic, brute strength, or sleight of hand can be used to accomplish each task differently. Conversational options can also change the required task. This creates the chance for a varied play through and replayability.

The combat is the Quest for Glory series was never it's strong point and it's not the strongest point of this game either. It does get the job done though and isn't a turn off.

The music and sound effects and crisp and enjoyable and fits the atmosphere of the current screen well. The voice acting is excellent if somewhat varied in it's quality.

The artwork is amazing. It represents the 90s game style perfectly. Backgrounds that look like they could have been hand painted fit together well and make the world feel well put together. The sprite work is clean and well executed. The portrait pictures for the characters are interesting and give a face to what would otherwise be a handful of pixels.

All together the game is simply amazing, especially for something that is offered for free on Steam. If you're the person who feels adventure gaming hit it's peak in the 90s and misses the feeling those games give you this one will be exactly what you want. It feels like a game that was made by Sierra in that era and simply unearthed later.

If you've never played the classics then I still recommend you give this one a shot. Then after you complete this one I recommend you check out some of classics that inspired it and run through the entire Quest for Glory series.

Ever wonder how it feels like to play a game on a 2001 Windows XP? Then this is the game for you!

Heroine's Quest is a classic adventure RPG game where you must survive harsh environments, facing creature enemies along the way before facing the final boss on the final battle. The amount of puns and fourth-wall breaking is what made me stay to play this game even more. 6/10 would recommend!

Summary: Quest for Glory in Midgard
Multiplayer: No
Completion: 16 hrs
Cards: No
Cloud: No

The Quest for Glory series by Sierra were basically adventure games with RPG character development and combat tacked on. Imagine King's Quest but with the ability to fight foes in actual combat instead of dying every five seconds to the environment. Heroine's Quest takes much of its inspiration from these series of games and adds a few mechanics of its own.

Right away you'll notice the generous use of norse mythology, even hinted in the game's subtitle. The decision to have this set so directly in norse mythology feels somewhat odd to me. Rather than creating its own mythology that's inspired by real life mythology, this one references it directly and loosely retells those stories. It's not a bad thing - Disney does that all the time. But this one feels a tad out of place.

There's some good humor here and there. The squirrel is great. I enjoyed the Tetris game over. I feel it could use a few more laughs though. Roughly 80% of the characters are intensely serious, and they don't quite gel in a world that has silly characters like Aurvandel.

The art and music is fantastic. The game world feels somewhat barren, but this is more a fault of the genre, as many adventure games tend to include many screens with little interactivity. I would have liked more items sprinkled on the ground that you could pick up.

The hunger/survival mechanic is strange at best. Adventure games generally reward you for exploring. Heroine's Quest instead punishes you for straying too far, or taking your time. Because of the survival gimmick, the puzzle-solving seems to take a backseat because you're always pressed for food and warmth. Thankfully you can shut this feature off, but I did try to play it as intended and did not find it increased the fun factor at all.

The combat system is pretty simplistic. It's one-on-one real time combat with menu inputs, much like the QFG1-3. Nothing special, and not irritating. It's just there.

Most of the game is voice acted, which is rare for indie adventure games. Huge thumbs up for that! Most voices are good, though Hervor sounds curiously tired and disinterested. I get that there's a deadly winter, and everyone is at their wits end, but I would have liked a more likeable character to wake up to first thing than her.

The map is greatly appreciated! This also gets a huge thumbs up. That is definitely something missing from just about every adventure game.

Perhaps the most striking feature of this game is the fact that it is free! Try it out. You've got absolutely nothing to lose but time. The sheer amount of work that must have gone into it cannot be understated. I enjoyed it enough that I believe it deserves a donation. I give this game a 8/10

Since I am a huge fan of Quest for Glory I love this game. It plays and looks a lot like it. The plot is good and although there is sometimes a little too much talking it is really enjoyable. I played it through as a warrior and am going to do it a few more times as the other classes.

I like Heroines Quest, its got a classic feel that reminds me of older adventure games. Its surprisingly detailed and is a pretty good size, game wise (it can take well over 20 hours to complete if you really get into it)! Heroines Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok is available to download in a few places, now including Steam!

The game has been out for quite some time now, I just never got around to reviewing it for Steam. Heroines Quest is a decent "classic" adventure RPG and I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of point and click adventure games, Or classic RPG's in general.
