"Forgotten CRPG gem from 2000. Gfx are ugly by todays standards but gameplay is still fun."

About This Game

Thousands of years ago six demon kings, known as the Revenants, ruled the world with an iron fist and bloody swords. Donning the bodies of mortal vassals, they could live in the realms of man forever. The great hero and warlock Harbinger was the only one who could stand up to their power. One by one he hunted the Revenants, taking their spirits and casting them into the Well of Souls. Alas, the Revenants survived. As a young man you will travel to meet your uncle in the town of Madrigal. There, your destiny draws you into the path that Harbinger trod - to confront the Revenants and banish their souls back to the Well forever. Your travels will take you far from Madrigal, to the ruined kingdoms of Horath, the ancient empire of Thardolin, and through the lost city of Talendrah. You will brave searing deserts and icy plains. You will have to seek answers among the living and the dead.

  • Customizable combat and magic system that can be as simple or as complex as you like.

I have very fond memories of this game, and I wanted to play it again, I'm a pretty nostalgic guy and I enjoy playing games from my childhood every now and then. This game is pretty fun, the lore and the world feels gothic and pretty much dead at some parts, it has a heavy gloomy felling all over it, and it is good.

But there's an issue here with this partiucular version, since Infogrames closed and its IPs are scattered around different companies, no devs have appeared to patch this game.

It is technically unplayable on this given moment on my Windows 7 64 bit computer, I can't find a healthy way to fix the fps, the screen ratio, the sound and the unsurmountable amount of crashes, I wanted to play it and to feel this game again, but too bad that it is unplayable right now. A fanpatch won't come soon enough since this game is pretty underground and doesn't have a big old fanbase, probably most of the people that enjoyed it back then have now forgotten it.

For the moment, all that I can say is:
The game is good, it's fun, has some fun mechanics and good physics interactions for the time, the lore is extense, the world is vast with much to explore, the voice actors are pretty fine too. But...

Don't buy it if you don't own a old computer, you'll only be able to play it on older computers with Windows XP or earlier, or else, the uncompatibility issues will hit you hard.

After 15 years I'm returning to Ratenna.

I'm descending from a ship. Unnamed stranger, who will change the world and save it from oncoming evil. League of Six together again, and only I can stop them.

"Soulbringer" is a game of a dawn of CRPG, when there were no established formulas and forms. From the age of experiments. Therefore, it is unusual everything: combat system, design and, of course, plot and style. You won't find anything similar in any games in those years, nor modern.

Now we can say about "Soulbringer" that it is a poor graphics, strange and difficult combat system and frequent crashes. But 15 years ago this game was magical. I remember my wandering through the snowy fields near Madrigal and Shadowguard. And as I touched the magical stone in first time.

Now you don't understand the whole awesomeness of this game, but if you played it in 2000th - you're lucky one.

Pro:
Runs on my Win7-64 Radeon machine ... use DX7 and it works fine for me
Classic / retro look

Con:
Controls suck
UI sucks
Mapping ... I can't find it
Story is par at best
Price $10.99 CDN LOL Seriously?
Screen ratio seems a bit off

Overall:
4/10 (-1 price) = 3/10
Pass until you can get it under $2

Just a heads up, Game dose run on Windows 8.1 Pro X64 with Nvidia 760 gtx with out compatabilty.

heres the main thing about this game.. It uses ether software rendering, DX6 or DX7.
Vista and Newer DOSE NOT HAVE DX 8.x or lower support. It only supports DX9.c and newer.
DX9.c DOSE NOT Fully suport DX 8.x or older, All that legecy code was dropped back in 2006. Win9.x and XP were the only system that could run DX 9.c and all the way down to DX2.0 (vista to WIn10 can only run DX 9.c and newer)

having said that, the rest is up to the manifactor on drivers. Depending on your card and drivers, depends on how you might be able to run this game on Vista and newer , with or with out compatabilty options.

The only way I can get the game to run is via DX6 @ 1080p, Software rendering and DX7 dose not work. for me... so you may be to play with the setup untill you find something that works. ALSO DO NOT TEST DISPLAY it will lock up.. Just run it with out testing...

having said that the steam version is ever thing you would expect from the orginal releases. Nothing added, nothing missing.

I picked this up for nostalgic reasons. Make sure that you have the software enabled as graphics on newer machines. The magic system is interesting, where balance can be essential. I wasn't able to finish 12+ years ago since the software would lock-up. This time around I will be a little more cautious near the end. If you can pick this title up on sale for $2.50, I would recommend. I think that Dubbya would agree.....TWO HORNS.
