What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“House of the Dying Sun is heading toward the finish line and Early Access is a wonderful way to get feedback from players. We feel like this feedback could make the game a stand-out indie space shooter and VR experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Almost all features are in place, so our intention is to close out the game and leave Early Access sometime this summer.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version will have a complete balance pass, a fleshed out stable of upgrades and weapons to unlock, and a carefully-tuned set of combat scenarios. It will also include a custom wave-clear (challenge) mode for even faster pick-up-and-play sessions.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Almost all major features are in place and each mission is playable. Some content/features may be missing or broken and the game's balance may drastically change based on player feedback.

The game currently supports:

  • Campaign: 14+ brutal combat scenarios with 3 difficulties
  • A daily randomly-generated challenge mode with Steam Leaderboards
  • SteamVR-compatible VR headsets
  • Keyboard and mouse controls
  • Gamepad-centric controls such as the Xbox 360 Controller (XInput-compatible) or PS4 Controller*

*An XInput or PS4 controller is highly recommended. Other joysticks and controllers are not officially supported, but the game supports in-game rebinding and advanced control settings.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not plan on pricing the game differently because of Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We encourage you to leave constructive feedback and suggestions on the Steam forums! It's helpful to have it all in one place and we intend to take advantage of that. This feedback will be taken into account as we work on future updates.”

Minor Balance & Performance Update

Hi!

We're going to be incrementally tweaking the challenge mode while making some performance improvements.

Most of these balance items will affect high level Challenge Mode play, but campaign will see some small changes/improvements as well. The first pass is to improve Imperial drone effectiveness and limit the amount of shields enemy waves can field.

Patch Notes - 7.25.16
  • DRONE: Increased Imperial drone HP by 50%
  • DRONE: Autocannon drone range increased
  • DRONE: Autocannon drones can target other drones
  • DRONE: Autocannon drone armor damage increased, shield damage decreased
  • CHALLENGE MODE: Escorts do not have shields
  • CHALLENGE MODE: Carriers and Battlecruisers now have much heavier escorts instead of too much fighter spam
  • CHALLENGE MODE: Decreased chance of flak drones for sniper units
  • PERF: Fixed some hitches when switching fighters or going in and out of tactical mode, prevents some holodecking in VR
  • PERF: Minor fixes, mostly having to do with small one-off garbage collections

Good hunting!

Challenge Mode Is Live

Challenge Mode
Live on the main branch is a new scenario, Last Stand at Ol's Shelter, previously known only as "wave clear." Each day (at 17:00 PST), a new battlefield is created. Each day, a new roster of enemies is summoned. Each day, you will die.

The rules are simple:
  • You will fight randomly-generated fleets until you lose your fighters or your Host Termination Timer is up
  • Each fleet is led by one or more traitor lords with a random set of upgrades
  • Eliminating these leaders fends off death by adding time your Host Termination Timer
  • Bonuses may be earned by eliminating civilian vessels
  • Your furthest wave and time is put on display using Steam Leaderboards
Challenge Mode is extremely challenging and is recommended for veteran players. Upgrades earned in the campaign will be available in this scenario.

This mode also represents one of the major feature milestones on the road to leaving Early Access. We're not quite there yet, as there is still work left to do across the game. Thanks for your support and patience!

Patch Notes

This update also includes the following fixes (among many others):
  • CONTROLS: ArmA-style mouselook is implemented (defaults to LEFT-ALT)
  • CONTROLS: Joystick axis freelook is implemented
  • FIGHTER AI: Major improvements to things like weapon selection and attack run positioning
  • DRONE AI: Healing Drone AI has better prioritization, will top off nearby allies
  • GAP DRIVE: Fixed cases where AI would kill themselves
  • PERFORMANCE: A ton of minor performance fixes went in, hopefully adding up to a better VR experience for many
We'll keep tweaking Challenge Mode until 1.0 arrives, so leave feedback in the Steam Forums! Your feedback has been invaluable so far. Thanks for taking the time to write it!

If you are looking for the next FreeSpace or Wing Commander, stay away. This is not it.

PROs
- After getting used to some movement mechanics (drifting, GAP drive if available) it's just as fun as it looks in the trailers. It's like Pearl Harbour in space and you are the aggressor.
- The 3D map is an essential tool and works well ... until you think you're playing Homeworld and hit the wrong keys (silly me). Thankfully the game pauses, giving you all the time you need to assess the situation, plan your moves and order your fleet around.
- Once unlocked all ships can be equiped with various weapons and modules, allowing for different play styles (most of the time).
- Everybody is expendable and some upgrades will encourage suicidal tactics. It creates some rather unique options.
- Controls are fully customizable. From simple Mouse+Key to HOTAS+TrackIR everything is possible.
- runs well even on potato rated PCs
- basic but beautiful art style + incredibly immersive sound design

CONs
- 14 missions isn't very much and you can often skip lower difficulties as they offer no extra reward.
- A lot of trail and error when it comes to equiping your fleet for certain missions. I find it repetitive but others might see it as increased replay value.

Wishlist
- A replay feature. If I jump in there, do a perfect assassination and improve my personal record I'd just love to watch it from every perspective imaginable. How else am I supposed to appreciate all the eye candy?
- Workshop integration because 14 missions + survival mode just isn't enough in the long run.
- Multiplayer ... which is probably never going to happen. Given how switching between vessels works I could see it being used in 2 - 3 player coop.

A well done (very) fast paced space shooter with tactical depth and the occasional puzzle about how to outfit your fleet. Won't keep you busy for weeks but will make you come back for more every so often.

my new favourite VR game. (playing on the vive)
works flawlessly with both my X52 pro and 360 joypad, head tracking and VR implementation is really good.
(although it would be nice if the devs would put in a pilot model for the ship as its a bit wierd looking down and not seeing your hands :)

performance is great (but you would expect that as the graphics are not the most demanding you'll ever see)
(i7 4790k,gtx980,16gb ram)

it still looks fantastic tho in a superhot kinda way (I really like the minimalist art style that a lot of games seem to be using nowadays)

it also has the cleanest crispest Ui i've seen so far in VR, everything is pin sharp.

So, I played the original homeworld back in the day, along with the sequels. I loved the atmosphere of those games and always wondered what it would be like to be in the battle instead of directing it from Fleet Command in the mother ship. House of the Dying Sun gives you a glimpse into what playing Homeworld from the first-person perspective of a fighter-jock might be like. And, for that I give this game a hearty Hells Yeah!

I hope that the dev does not stop here. There is so much more that can be done with this IP. I can see being able to work your way up from fighter-jock to an admiral commanding a massive capital ship.

There may be some who will balk at the price, but I felt like $20 was perfectly fair considering the amount of attention the devs gave this game. It is obvious that the creators put some heart and soul into this game, but they didn't have the resources to make it a AAA title with awesome cut scenes and celebrity voice talent.

My message to the devs is this, "don't sit on this IP too long, you've got a winner here!"

This might very well be one of the best space sim shooters that I've tried. To me there is nothing compared to hurdling towards an enemy fighter, evading their lasers, and then blasting them to smithereens! Doing this in VR is all the better.

It takes a little getting into (or did for me) and I had to do some tweaking with the Steam Controller (wish there was better support for this, especially in the map view- smooth rotation would be really nice instead of the weird snapping EDIT: Nevermind, there's an option for smooth rotation in the gameplay options) but HOLY CRAP is this good fun in VR. One of the few games to get me to sit down with a gamepad on the Vive.

Looking forward to getting more into this, I'm finally starting to build a fleet and really getting to grips with the nuance of the varying weapon types and making sure to reload before switching weapons. I'm really, really impressed. And drifting is fantastic!

After trying Elite Dangerous and refunding it, I was very sceptical of another VR space sim. I'm glad I took the risk, because House of the Dying Sun is an amazing game. This game has a quick and useful tutorial (a must-have, in my book), and progression through the game seems to scale well. Of course, I've not put in many hours into the game, so I may come back and edit this review. But as things stand now, I recommend this game for anyone looking for a good VR space sim.

The concept is quite cool, but there isn't enough content as of now. Even flying around gets boring after a little while, and really the entire game is doing just that.

I waffled for quite a bit on whether to buy this or not, but I finally caved and tried it out. I have fond memories of the Wing Commander series from when I was younger, but otherwise I've never really been able to get into space sims, although I always want to like them. I recently got some decent flight joysticks from a second-hand shop, so I downloaded a few space sims to test them out, and remembered seeing early development on Enemy Starfighter (now House of the Dying Sun). I didn't really enjoy the "big" space sims like the X Rebirth demo, so I figured I'd splurge and try out HotDS.

HotDS is the first space sim since Wing Commander that I've really enjoyed, and I found myself laughing out loud with glee as I hunted down the Traitor Lords. It is short, but for me that's actually a bonus, as it's long enough to enjoy without having to dedicate my life to it to finish the game. For a bit more than the price of a 3D movie you're going to have an unforgettable experience. I can see how people that are used to the classic space sim games where you can be a trader, play for 200 hours and not reach the end, etc. would find this disappointing, but I am a fan of short, sweet experiences that are memorable. I highly recommend it, especially if you loved the vibe of Homeworld's setting.

Played in Vive
100/10 Would be Starbuck again.

Wish I could use my joystick, but also understand that it would cripple the tactical gameplay.

Would be fun if Vive users could do 2 player, one person on computer in tactical view, one in Vive in one fighter.

Person on computer should be required to wear an eye patch, drink a bunch, and complain about gaius frakkin baltar until a vein pops out of their forehead.

House of the Dying Sun is my new favourite Early Access game that has overall surprised me with it's fun gameplay.

Warning! This review will contain spoilers for literally the entire game.

Gameplay is fun but short, I finished the game in two hours. There are three types of difficulty and lots of upgrades. The game needs a lot of improvement campaign wise but it was a lot of fun to play nevertheless.

Story

In House of the Dying Sun, you are the bad guys. You play as a host body that pilots the most dangerous fighter in the galaxy, your objective?

Avenge the Emporer...

Wait... Was it? We don't really know, but you get to decide at the end.

You fight your way through the galaxy with your ragtag team of what remains of the Emporers Guard killing each of the false thanes and traitorous lords along your journey. Killing and Massacaring countless civilians, soldiers and officers that step in your path. Until your final mission, your last dreadnought armed to the teeth with torpedos, you begin bombarding the surface of the Empire's homeworld until the genocide of over 14 million souls is over. It ends with a last stand until your host body.

I normally don't review games, but I had to. If you liked the original StarFox and/or Tie Fighter, imagine what would happen if those were made today by indie devs. It's an action space sim with unlocks. It's fabulous.

The only cons in my mind are some stutters and the campaign is too short. Please devs, more DLC. You'll have my money for sure.

Seriously in love with this game. It really scratches that old Space Sim itch, with a little bit of fleet management added in. Almost feels like Homeworld in a sense.

What I really hope is that this is a springboard for either an expansion or sequel that is much deeper with regards to fleet management. Something akin to a 4x + RTS + Space Sim combined. How could would it be to have your own little empire where you start out with barely anything, but you slowly capture/build new ships and take more territory from other alliances.

Either way, this game is great. The controls (I'm using a 360 controller) are seamless and easy to learn/use. The in-game physics are top notch. The graphics are very stylized...love it.

It's pretty hard to hear comm chatter, but that's about the only real complaint I have so far. That and maybe adding more options to avoid missles/torpedos.

Great arcade-e space sim. Controls were super easy to pick up (a lot better with a game pad!) and the visual style works really well.

Campaign is relatively short, but features bonus objectives to replay.

Online coop for this would be amazing. Hope a wave survival mode gets added!

TL;DR: Game features are amazing, but lacks longevity and therefore immersion. Not worth $20.00 AUD.

EDIT (14/6/16) Don't let the 'early access' tag fool you with the promise of more content. The developer has stated that the 'early access' labelling is purely for bug fixes, and he plans to add no more additional content to the game, aside from a wave gamemode: "House has had a ton of iteration put into it before even hitting Early Access, so right now I have no plans to add or change anything major to the game. The remaining work will center around bugs, weapons, upgrades, wave clear, and mission balance. " - dyingsungame.com

Similar to what other people have said, this game has amazing potential. It's atmosphere, design, gameplay, optimization - the list goes on - are top notch. It's sound design is phenominal and extremely emersive.

The issue is a severe lack of content.

The game contains a total of 14 missions, each of which can be completed 3 times and higher difficulties, some of which you will have to return to once your ship is better equiped or you have a larger fleet. However, these missions take, at a max, five minutes to do each. Crunch the numbers and you end up with around 4 hours of gameplay (and that's being generous). For a game priced at $20.00 AUD, this is a pretty big rip-off.

And maybe it's a product of the industry - other games do worse. But this game is already so good, and has the potential to be so much more, it feels like you're being treated to a proof of concept or a fancy paid tech demo.

From what I've read since following this game a few months back, there was actually an implemented feature in which you would jump between systems, earn money for upgrades by completing various missions within them, and use this as a way of boosting your overall capabilities. Why this system has been removed completely, I cannot for the life of me figure out. While it's true that the 14 current pre-defined missions need to be set (timing is extremely important), there seems to be no reason that this could not be implemented as a side feature, adding a beautiful eliment of RPG and immersion to what would be a fantastic game.

Rodina comes to mind. Rodina has all the sandbox elements that make it a wonderful game to explore and become immersed in, whilst lacking all the refined combat, sound design and graphics that are offered by House of the Dying Sun. In the perfect world there would be a single collaboration between the makers of the two games. In the mean while, we can only pray that the Marauder Interactive listens to the people who want to see a return to this form of freeplay, and takes a leaf out of Rodina's book.

The only other niggling issues I have is freelook is currently limited to people with VR headsets. This is a pretty massive oversight for a game of this nature, and hope it's resolved soon. (EDIT 10/6/16: the developer has responded to threads saying he will implement actual freelook in an update). Additionally, it'd be amazing to see an increase in 'simulation' focuses, letting you interact with your ship in greater detail.

All in all, the game is beautiful and fun to play - but the game itself prevents you from playing it for long, and does not seem to be worth the $20.00 it is priced at.
