Why Early Access?

“We want to take this opportunity to grow a community of players while developing the game in a sustainable manner. Critique, criticism and community are vital to our development process and improving your play experience. Early Access allows us this opportunity.

Atajrubah is still in development and as such there are missing features, content and plenty of bugs. These issues will be addressed with subsequent, frequent updates and guidance from player feedback. We want to hear from you !”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are planning to exit early access after a 12 - 18 month period.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan on engaging with the community through the Steam Forums and our own. Providing updated builds every 2-4 weeks depending on progress. Players will be able to report bugs, vote on feature prioritization and make feature proposals that may ultimately end up in the game. We also plan on providing experimental builds of the game with untested features.”

0.1.6 Development Update & Season's Greetings

Hey there folks!

I trust that everone is having a restful festive season :)
I wanted to give you a quick development update and an idea of some of the improvements coming in the 0.1.6 update next month.

UI Improvements
The biggest change thats coming in 0.1.6 is related to the User Interface.

As proud as I was of my Drag-Drop inventory system, there were many flaws in the implementation. At larger scales it'd become more complicated to manage and iterate upon and each change or addition may have brought more bugs.

The drag-drop interface has been reworked and now makes full use of UMG (Unreal Motion Graphics, Epic's custom UI solution). Its now far more flexible and complexity has been reduced by 3/4. The new system allows for multiple windows that can be re-arranged in the game viewport.

Action Menus

Action menus are a new addition to the UI, when hovering over an inventory item you can right click. This will bring up a menu with a list of common actions for that particular item.

Wildlife

0.1.6 will see the introduction of wild life to the game. Gazelle,Goats and Crabs inhabit the world and can be hunted down providing the player with more food options and crafting elements.

Resource Gathering & Looting improvements

Thanks to the UI improvements the player will be able to gather resources such as animal skin, meat or loots items from the corpses of animals or Ghuls. The player will also be able to loot their own corpses so that they can get back some of their lost inventory items.

Other changes include crafting & salvage improvements, improved ballistics, new animations, new world items, new crafting recipes and more.

Full details will be listed in the release notes and will of course be accompanied by a state of development video.

In the mean time, myself and the other team member's would like to extend our warmest season's greetings to you all and wish you a very happy and prosperous new year.

Best Regards and Much Love

MrNexy and the Atajrubah Team.

[Known Issues]

  • [Foliage LOD anomalies ]
There are a few instances of extreme LOD abnormalities for some foliage assets. I'm not sure what is causing this but I am looking into it.

  • [Glowing Water]
It has been brought to my attention by a player that,in some circumstances at night the water may glow when you have the torch lit.

I haven't been able to replicate this effect on my side just yet but I am looking into this.
If you experience this please do let me know what graphics settings you have and what model GPU you're using.

  • [Animation Sets]

We are aware that there are many animations missing, this content is being worked on and this content will be added as it is

completed. An example would be swimming animations.

  • [Footsteps heard while in the water]
This is tied in the animation sets and will be addressed as we get the swimming animations done.

[Fixes]

  • [Saved Graphics Settings]
This is issue has been addressed. You should notice that your previously selected settings will be saved and loaded when you open

    the settings menu.

  • [Torch flame active after torch unequipped.]

This would occur when unequipping a torch while it was lit. It would result in a lovely fireball in your hand. This has been

    resolved.

[Changes]

  • [Unreal Engine 4.6 Upgrade]

The project has been upgraded to Unreal Engine 4.6, along with this upgrade comes a noticeable performance boost thanks to how

foliage meshes are being handled in 4.6.

  • [UI: Setting Screen Modification]
Toggle Torch functionality is bound to the [F] key, this used to be indicated below the user stats when a torch was equipped. Now

this is listed in the controls screen of the menu system.

  • [UI: 720p Item Overlay]

Adjustments have been made to the Item Info Overlay, the height of the overlay is adjusted when below a certain screen height now.

This avoids the obstruction of Info Overlay text in 720p mode.

  • [UI: Dialogue box]

I'm in the process of phasing out all debug text. I have created a new dialogue box that will fade in and out to provide you with

    alerts.
An example would be if you wanted to craft something using a combination of items and the recipe doesn't exist yet.

[New Features]

  • [Experimental Multiplayer Functionality]

With the new Unreal Engine release this past weekend, I have taken the time to put together a UMG powered server browser. There isn't much testing I can do on my side so I'm including this in the next update, that way we can get more reliable testing done.

Please do keep in mind that multiplayer support is experimental. It may work or it may not and the game is not optimized for it.

Your feedback on any crashes would be much appreciated.

  • [Drowning]

When 'dong vision' is too much for you and you need to end it all.
When under water a meter will appear that indicates how much air you have left. Once your air runs out your health will begin to

drain until you come up for air.

  • [Base Projectile Weapon Implementation]
Take on enemies from a more comfortable distance. The initial implementation makes use of a bow and arrow, the system is setup in

such a way that new weapons and ammo types can easily be added in subsequent updates.
As this feature was only just added we do not have an animation for it yet. Yes, it does look silly now but will look much better once we're done.

Early Access Review
Atajrubah has a lot of promise but a ways yet to go.

The visuals are rough but still quite pleasant to look at. There's a bit of distortion around the edges of the models (notably trees) and the characters move in awkward ways at times.

The inventory and crafting menus are...primitive and not terribly helpful. There's an unexplained "crotch" slot that I'm wierdly curious to see what eventually goes there. I'm guessing it's a belt but stranger things have happened in games.

There are no crafting recipes as of yet and while the basic process of playing the game is relatively familiar to people who've played survival games, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot to actually do yet. I do like survival games and the Arabian theme is new in terms of the survival genre.

The game does snarl the video drivers and crash rather regularly on my machine. This is not a point in its favor but I'll withold outright hate because I don't know if this is a problem exclusive to my rig or not.

Atajrubah could be a really solid addition to the survival genre if it follows through on full release with the promise it's showing in the open beta and fixes some of the more glaring issues.

A couple of things that *must* be fixed before launch:

- Day/night cycles are somewhat erratic. Sometimes at night it's like someone just turned out the lights and there's no indicated way to make fire or light of any kind. I did respawn with a torch a couple of times but there was no indication of how to light it so I just stumbled around in the dark. The shadows also move incredibly fast as the sun moves across the sky, faster than your character can actually run. This isn't major but it is definitely disorienting and visually odd.

- The game does not pause when you open the menu. This is a pretty serious problem for obvious reasons.

- Items do not stack and that's a pretty crippling flaw when one arrow takes up one inventory slot. I'm willing to bet this will be fixed later on but for now it's not a pleasant bug.

- The crashing does not add to the experience.
