What the developers have to say:

“We have decided to offer Masterspace as an Early Access release in order to polish the product and get community feedback. The game is fully playable and all features advertised below are available. However, Masterspace is still in active development and additional features may be added in future updates. We encourage you to get involved in the Masterspace development by communicating with the team. We are very interested in your feedback and we are dedicated to providing the game experience you want.

In the near future we plan to add more content, including new craftable objects, materials and planet types. We also plan to improve the modding support by integration of Steam Workshop functionality. This would also allow for convinient sharing of blueprints and scenarios between players. Please note that Masterspace has not been extensively tested and that you may encounter bugs and hardware compatibility issues. However, the game should be relatively stable on most systems.

By purchasing a copy of Masterspace you will get immediate access to the game. Of course, this also includes the final version once it has been released. We estimate that the Early Access phase will be over before the end of this year. Please be aware that the price may be increased as the final release approaches.”

Masterspace v3.2

Masterspace v3.2 has been released, introducing improved world generation capabilities as well as a new tutorial scenario. The world generator has been given a graphical user interface where the number of planets, as well as their sizes, may be specified. Furthermore, it is possible to customize climate settings and the abundance of resources. Buildings from the blueprint database will also be placed randomly on the planets.

A rare new material has been introduced, Maesterium, which may only be found on asteroids. Maesterium is required for construction of many of the most advanced objects in the game. New objects include a set of new storage and lighting objects, as well as a fusion reactor. The trading post has been split in two separate objects, for materials and explosives trade respectively. Three new perks has been added, which are related to these changes: Lighting, Storage and Production.

A much requested feature has been the ability to easier relocate objects. It is now possible to pick up and place objects, similar to how they were originally placed. Press and hold the grab key to relocate an object. There is now also a confirmation dialog for selling objects and a function has been added to center and delete blueprints.

Other fixes include an automatic backup of the last autosave and a rework of the lighting engine. Furthermore, the physics simulation has been optimized, which should greatly improve the frame rate on low-end CPU setups. As usual, a lot of bugs have been fixed, along with other minor features and improvements of the modding capabilities.

New features:

  • Random buildings from the database are now placed on generated planets
  • Automatic subscription features added to mod manager
  • New Material: Maesterium, exclusive for asteroids
  • New Perks: Lighting, Storage, Production
  • New Objects: Basket, Barrel, Fireplace, Wall Torch, LED Mark I, LED Mark II, Fusion Reactor

  • Modding of music and sound effects is now possible
  • Organic asteroids
  • Relocating objects by holding the grab key (default: 'q')
  • Button to delete blueprints
  • Additional building blueprints included
  • Function to center blueprints on save
  • New tutorial scenario
Changes:
  • Multiple objects changed to accomodate new materials and objects
  • Tweaked world generation settings
  • Old world generator scenarios removed
  • Culture points are now team specific
  • Confirmation required for selling objects
  • Optimized physics simulation
  • Improved lighting

  • Excessive GLSL log messages in latest AMD drivers fixed
  • Fixed loading screen crash
  • Fixed "living dead" bug

About This Game

Masterspace is a game about mining, creating and exploring, featuring fully destructible environments and spaceships that allow you to travel between different planets. Use explosives to mine metal ores or watch your newly constructed home get smashed to pieces by a meteorite impact. As you venture into space to discover new planets, the hull integrity of your custom built spaceship will be tested.

You start out by mining stone and chopping down trees to produce primitive building materials. As the game progresses you will be able to craft more advanced materials and ultimately construct a spaceship. Materials are also used to fabricate a wide range of different objects, ranging from simple furnaces and sawmills, to advanced technological achievements such as laser turrets and deep space sensors.

Features:

  • Fully Destructible planets and Spaceships
  • Fully destructible environments where planets, buildings and spaceships are completely customizable.

  • Explore a Universe Full of Different Planets
  • Discover new planets with strange lifeforms or planets covered with ice or lava. Spaceships may seamlessly land on all planets without any loading screens.

  • Mine Resources, Construct Buildings and Produce Goods
  • A vast amount of different materials may be used to construct buildings and spaceships or to craft objects.

  • Innovative Construction System
  • A revolutionary hybrid voxel engine allows block-based buildings to be placed on top of smooth, yet fully destructible, terrain.

  • Dynamic Liquids
  • A completely dynamic liquid system allows water to flow freely on the planets. Pumps and pipelines may be constructed to manipulate the water flow.

  • Spherical Planets
  • Playing on spherical planets introduces new challenges and innovative gameplay possibilities.

  • Multiplayer Support
  • Challenge your friends to a space race or invite them to visit your planet. Cooperate to mine resources, complete scenarios or construct the next world wonder.

  • Designed for Easy Modding
  • Designed for easy modding where most aspects of the game may be customized by Lua scripts.

Early Access Review
A really nice game, recommended if you have a powerful PC (and no mainboard integrated graphic card).

- One of the better feeling game in the recent voxel dig/craft/build genre attack
+ feels more complete in comparison to games like Blockscape, StarForge, Xenominer, Vox, Realm Explorer

The good:
- as usuall -> lots of digging, searching for resources, building and crafting
- a well thought building system
- nice skill points system - the more you build the more points you get (to unlock skills/perks/cratfables)
- not bad graphic (compared to pixel voxel games)
- perks/skills to swim/build faster, etc. Also to unlock new crafting items.
- cool game modes in development
- build a spaceship and fly do another planet!
- cool water system /pipes, pumps

The bad:
- very demanding on pc (poorly optimised, memory leaks/etc)
- crashes are often, some people cannot get the game to start
- still in development -> patches are not very often, can break things. The Dev is deploying hotfixes though.
- not much to do yet once you unlock all craftables and fly to planets
- small planets

In overall, a recommendation from me.

Great game :) awsome concept and execution :) not so awesome on the bugs :( and no reliable multiplayer. if you know how to port forward, which is pretty easy, its fun to play with a friend but due to bugs and no live join its pretty frustrating sometimes. seems like developer might of launched a tad early but i think in time this will be an amazing game. i would give it a 8 out of 10 considering its an early access

Early Access Review
Well I have only played about 2 hours and after you get over the first few quirks it becomes quite an enjoyable game.

The quirks mentioned being mostly that you only have 8 inventory slots and when you start a new game 4 are already taken up, looking through the building menu you can see that you need dirt to make the first tier storage device which has 3 slots *Though the description is out of date and says 2* however I started a game in a spherical system which I think has 4 or 5 planets and on my planet dirt is very sparce. I have to run around the entire planet digging on piece or dirt here or there.

However the interface is quite intuitive as is the building and it is all quite easy to understand once you have figured out the basics, though documentation for the game is very lacking.

Another disconcerting point is that the official forums for the game are VERY quiet. The game appears to have been in development since back in 2012 and yet they still only have a very tiny active community and information from the developer seems sparce and spread out over a long time.

I think in summary this game has a LOT of potential but there are a few things the developer needs to think about if they wish to bring success to their game. *Advertising, Communication, Documentation"

I really enjoy playing this game! It gives Voxel space sims (or blocky) A whole new picture! Only one thing I think that in an update they should add Solar systems to Editor :3 But Still I love it.

I had this game for months now, since before the steam release.

At first it was very hard to understand, i had no idea how it worked.
But after a few tries I finnaly got the hang off it and since than it is a blast playing it.

The main feature that i found unique was the building mechanics which lets you build in all angels, even lets you save the building for future use.

+flying from planet to planet and so..

Aside for the part that "planets are kinda small" the game is well recommended.
