11/3/2014 Update...

Wow, this past month has been a bit of a whirlwind.

As you can probably see by now we're rebranding the game to "The Battle of Sol". This slight name change was done to further separate us from the original game. Why?

A couple of reasons but the primary one is that people were getting confused between the two. Hopefully, as word spreads this will slowly change.

So what's new in this update?

- Missions 3 and 6 have been completely overhauled.
- UCS Capital Ships are larger.
- Lots of balancing and bug-fixes.
- Fleet mode has been completely overhauled. Players now truly command a fleet a ships as you jump from sector-to-sector in search of fuel and salvage. We've incorporated a 3rd person (ship?) camera and you can now issue orders to your various ships to attack, launch fighters, repair, etc. Our goal for Fleet mode is to offer a very different, more systemic experience from the main campaign. Please check it out and offer as much feedback as you can. The mode still needs a fair bit of work but what's there should be enough to get a good sense of what we're aiming for.

Hey everyone,

We just pushed a fairly large update to the game. Here are the notes:

- Missions 06 and 07 have been added. These are still in what I would consider an Alpha state so please let us know if you find any bugs.

- Lots of other misc. improvements across the game.

- Fleet mode has been given special attention in this update. We've greatly expanded upon the number of scenarios, added Leaderboard (!) support, and lots of UI tweaks and improvements. In fact, you can access this mode directly from the main menu. But we're not done with this mode yet as the next update will incorporate a Salvage system where you earn Salvage from destroying enemy ships to spend on Upgrades and Repairs for your ship and your Fleet.

- Fixed a resolution issue

- Added the COD Fighter cockpit. This is still in a very rough state but we wanted to get in the game sooner rather than later.

Lastly, we need your feedback on Fleet Mode (and the Campaign too). Everyone's voice counts and we've already made significant improvements to the game based on feedback received. Also, if you do like what you see please don't hesitate to give us a positive user rating and spread the word through various social networks!

About This Game

STORY SYNOPSIS


By the year 2500 Earth had become toxic and unsafe for human life. Pollution and overpopulation had ravaged the planet, forcing humanity to the stars. Colonies and settlements soon sprung up across the solar system, but man had not left its thirst for war behind. Then, they learned the Sun was dying, and everything changed. Only when faced with a threat greater than each other did the nations of man finally come together. The United Colonies of SOL (UCS) was born, its first and only mission: to locate a new home for mankind, safely beyond the doomed borders of our solar system.

Suit up and take on the role of the Lieutenant Commander, ace fighter pilot and 2nd in command of the UCS Atlas, as you search for a new home, battle a mysterious enemy, and rescue mankind from a fiery end.

GAME MODE DESCRIPTIONS


Fleet Mode

- An endless survival mode with your fleet, jumping from sector to sector in search of friendly convoys to rescue and COD fleets to engage or flee from!

- Ships rescued join your fleet, making it easier to survive but harder to maintain your fuel supplies for each jump!

- Find both UCS and COD fuel refineries, enemy staging areas, get sabotaged by COD infiltrators...or be tricked by renegade UCS ships in an ambush!

- The more you jump, new and more interesting challenges open up! Make a choice to raid an enemy stronghold to ease your future jumps, or find yourself separated from your fleet with the enemy bearing down on you while your jump drive warms up!

Survival Mode

- You and your Hades fighter are alone in deep space as wave after wave of COD ships warp in!

- Survive as long as you can while racking up the kills and rescuing the wayward transport for the highest score possible!

Our current plan moving forward will be to continually update the game throughout Early Access with:

- Additional Campaign Missions
- Fully Recorded Dialog
- Game Mode Improvements
- Steam Achievements
- Steam Leaderboards

Just a couple of things...

There are a lot of great things about this game - graphics, story... lots of potential.

That said, flight mechanics and a couple of other things leave A LOT to be desired.

1) No side thrusters - up, down, left or right. Unless I don't understand the controls, you can't control the direction of your ship... only backward or forward. Even Tom Hanks had side thrusters in Apollo 13.

2) Buggy. Sound goes in and out (I've checked my machine and settings.. definitely on the side of the game). You can travel through ship models... I've designed 3d spaceships for games before and this isn't a hard issue to avoid.

I DO recommend this game as it has a lot of potential. I suggest they model their flight mechanics as Allegiance did, which is considered semi-Newtonian.

As a lover of all things that fly in space (mainly if I'm allowed to helm a heavily armed one xD) I have to say this game sounds very promising! True, it is in alpha, and this review will be based on my analysis on said alpha version.
There are a few issues concerning the sounds in game. Sometimes the game mutes a couple of sounds or on ocasion mutes the game entirely, but nothing too critical (and understandable. It IS an alpha version, so instability is expected).
But so far, aside from the thruster system and the power distributing systems, the game provides a very fun series of dogfights in space with easy to learn controls. The graphics aren't bad although the sounds should be revamped, mainly the weapon sounds.
Other than that, I'll keep a close watch on updates for this game! I recommend it for people that liked games like H.A.W.X. and even Warthunder and even for those unfamiliar to this type of games!

EDIT: Forgot to mention that a bit of diversity in the ships would be great! Mainly if we could switch between ship classes.

So far i like this game! Review might change down the line :) If you are a fan of Space Sim type games or Wing Commander games im sure you will like this game. It seems to have good controls and real nice looking gfx! I say give this one a shot and lets see in time what becomes of it :)

Early Access Review
Keep in mind that the game is still under development, so my opinion may change between now and official release. It's a little rough around the edges graphically (even at 1920x1080) and the controls take some getting used to (reminds me of Battlestar Galactica a bit), but I'm enjoying my experiences thus far. Skirmish mode, for example, introduces not only the ability to dogfight a bit but actually has some sort of resource mechanic that I don't fully understand yet. Early Access Review
Looks great - but i had to quit 15 minutes in because you cant assign the yaw to your keyboard and the roll to mouse/joystick - which has been the standard many of us have been acustomed to for years. Hopefully they fix before 'release' but its a shame if not.
