Quake Live Update v1069

We've just released an update to both the client and the server today. Servers and clients will both need to update as the changes are not compatible between versions, and older servers will be de-listed from the server list. Here's the list of changes:

- add server support for alternate death effects through workshop
- fixed inability to look around after issuing a map_restart while paused
- grappling hooks on dead and disconnected players weren't freed, resulting in the hook snapping from player to player
- clientmute now properly mutes team chat
- fixed some random color issues on map rotation error output
- powerups and keys were spawning before the minimum amount of time at map start
- elder: fixed doubled up fog volume
- ironworks: fixed ffa spawns

Everything is great, especially the gameplay, but the big (and in my opinion the only) problem with this game is the lack of players. It's still very fun with bots though!

At this point, Quake Live is arguably in its best iteration yet.

Since dropping the subscription-based model, all previously Premium features are available to everyone.
The game now has full Steamworks and Workshop support, all the modern features a multiplayer shooter should have (dedicated servers, lobbies, tons of options etc.) and is a generally much more complete game than it was during its "browser game" days.
Also there was a period during which the devs tried to make the game more suitable for newcomers and casuals by adding stuff like weapon loadouts and item timers. Thankfully, the devs realized that was a mistake and fixed it as well.
Basically, Quake Live has become an excellent remaster of Quake 3 Arena, i.e. something it should've been from the start.

The trade-off, however, is that the base game costs money (though if you've played QL on Steam when it was free, it's still available to install for free).
I wish it was still free-to-play, but I guess something like that is too good for Bethesda.

I can't say that I'd recommend getting this game at full price — the player numbers aren't great as of lately — but I'm 100% positive that this game is still as good as ever. It's still the Quake 3 Arena that everyone knows and loves.

People keep complaining about the lack of hardcore arena shooters nowadays without realizing that Quake Live already has everything they need. Even if by some miracle they don't fuсk up the upcoming Quake Champions, it's going to get measured against Q3A and for a good reason: Q3A is the golden standard of arena shooters, and if there is a game with mechanics that you could describe as "timeless", it's this one. There's a very little chance that the upcoming game will surpass it.

If you're new to arena shooters, though, you better prepare your аss before going in because you are going to get your shit wrecked at first. Like all good skill-based games, it has a near-infinitely high skill ceiling as well as a pretty high skill floor.
