The second chapter in one of the most loved and respected Japanese shooting game series ever: The Tale of ALLTYNEX by Japanese indie developer SITER SKAIN. Carefully crafted play experiences, destructive fun, and absorbing gameplay have made the ALLTYNEX trilogy renowned in shmup / shooting game communities, both in Japan and overseas.

Story
Many years have passed since the ALLTYNEX incident and humanity’s resettlement of the Earth. The world’s nations have joined to form a unified economy and a global militaristic government. However, in opposition to the worldwide mass oppression, a resistance organization arose: Valkyness.
The decades long conflict between the Global Unified Army and Valkyness is suddenly interrupted when an alien force arrives seeking vengeance on humanity for atrocities inflicted upon their people.
Earth's war against the Raiwat leads to a surprising ending that reduces almost the entire planet to scorched earth, brings mankind to the verge of extinction and sows the seeds of the events to follow in KAMUI.

  • Use the reflective shield system mechanic for perfect defense or to powerfully reflect enemy attacks!

Broken game. Renders ALL sprites (ships, shots, menu items, explosions, pretty much everything) with large black boxes around them, obscuring nearby sprites, and the developer refuses to allow the game code to be altered in any way, broken or not. So RefleX is hideous and unplayable for some of buyers due to a simple rendering bug, and Siter Skain wants it to stay that way. The other two Tale of Alltynex games don't have this issue (nor do any of my other shmups), but RefleX is definitely buyer beware, given the absolute refusal to fix even game-breaking bugs.

PS: To those of you marking these facts "unhelpful", I'm glad you were fortunate enough to receive a playable game, but I can't recommend a game that doesn't work, and buyers should know that if it doesn't work, it simply will not be fixed. Have a look at the screen shots section, and see if you'd recommend that.

"Jogo difícil da ♥♥♥♥♥!" Dica: morra bastante no início pois a cada gameover você recebe um continue adicional(eu recomendo pelo menos uns 60!) Esse é MUITO melhor que KAMUI. A terceira fase é épica!

Your standard bullet hell shmup, but pretty bland. No special features to it, just a vertical scrolling shooter. This isn't a bad thing, plenty of shooters are this standard, but nothing about this is fun. The patterns are few and weak, the music is just there, and the visuals are actually nice. More movement based than pattern based. A mediocre shmup. If you're looking for more on Steam you COULD buy this, but there are many better ones to find.

I rate this game 3/5. Okay, but this can get frustrating to play.

This is a fun bullet hell spacey top-down view late 1980's styled arcade shooter which will be fairly familiar to anyone who's played Crimson Clover or Raiden III. However the various weapons systems of your spacecraft can take some getting used to (they are quite a bit more complex than in most other shooter arcade styled games of this kind) and this game is quite a bit more challenging (and can be frustrating) than many other games of this type. The levels and enemies are fairly creative and the action is intense though.

This is one of my favourite Shoot em ups. (Best shooter I played since Arrow Flash for the Sega Mega Drive.)
It's easy to learn but hard to master. Mastering the reflection ability is so rewarding.
At first I thought it was unfair that you had to start over from the beginning when you had a game over. But after a while I found out that I was getting better and better at the game because of this design choice and know I'm glad they did choose for a 'real' game over because that makes finishing this game really satisfying.
Long story short if you like old school shooters/Shoot em ups you'll love this game.

A good shmup/bullet hell with a bullet reflecting shield to bounce bullets back at enemies. Every Game Over you accumulate a continue for your next game. I stored up 50 continues for my run to the end and used 30. RefleX had me cursing a few times but most the time I accepted my lack of skill or the seemingly impossible odds of survival.

I actually pirated the game before this but I bought it, cuz, hey 50% off! (and I wanted actual English instead of the Jap ver I had)

Of the three games, this one had the best music and boss fights.

The reflection gimmick is balanced by the fact you only have ONE life but all that armor you got on is way more HP than the lives you get on Kamui.
Contuining from your first death invalidates your score at the end but you get to keep any Areas you passed for Area Select for practice.
Scores are only valid for 1 CC runs unfortunately. (Farthest I truly got was Stage 3/4 Cancer [Human Type] boss fight on 1 CC and that was from pure luck)

The game also encourages you to reflect kill since it gives a score multiplier bonus depending on kills made within a small duration of time. (So you can reflect shot something then use regular bullets to keep that score multiplier but it'll go away after 1 sec)

Siter Skain never ceases to amaze me. It's truly their magnum opus as Nyu Media once said. Contains one of the best setpieces and the most epic boss fights Ive ever come across in a shmup with excellent music to boot that perfectly matches the pacing, atmosphere and certain sequences of the game. They clearly put a lot of passion and love into this game

Another glorious nostalgia trip to the arcades of old. :-D

EDIT: I'm updating this review. There is so much more to this game that it requires greater elucidation.

RefleX is the standard by which any 2-D shmup and bullet-hell ought to measure by. The gameplay is ingeniously integrated, and the story is told and inferred exquisitely within every stage. You don't need a tutorial; the controls are seamless, intuitive, and gratifying. More happens in an hour with RefleX than an entire season of your average, slow TV series. I have never been more impressed with a game of this genre.

RefleX may not do absolutely everything right, but by goodness, it does literally nothing wrong.

It's difficult to recommend this game, as the review system requires, simply because of the age. The game doesn't scale well for modern systems, being well over a decade old. It runs windowed, and has minimal configuration options. Because of the age of the game, and being aware of much newer games of the same genre.

However, if you do enjoy bullet hell games, and don't like the new ones, it's playable on Windows 8.1 with no serious issues (the control scheme, however, cannot be customised).

RefleX, originally released in 2008, must be one of the better games in the Shoot 'em up genre.
I might not be the biggest fan of the genre but I still had a "Blast" playing the game.

The gameplay is just what you would expect in a game like this; It's fast, enemies shoot you from every direction and it's pretty difficult, in my opinion. One thing I really liked is the fact you can use your shield to bounce enemy bullets back.

Since the game is pretty old, the graphics and music are straight out of that era but that just adds to the charm of this game. There are no online leaderboards or achievements, so you can only compare your own scores.

A game like this is not for everyone but I can recommend this to every fan of the genre.

Contras:
Baixa resolução do jogo(1280x960)
Não da para usar o escudo e atirar ao mesmo tempo
A sua nave não tem nenhum especial.....da pra acreditar nisso o.O
Você só tem um tipo de tiro e só um tipo de nave para jogar

Short Answer: Yes, this game is amazing. Buy it now!

Long Answer: I picked up this game last year from Nyu Media's website, and I'm glad it finally made it to Steam. Yeah, I've got a few buddies I'm going to corrupt with some Alltynex goodness.

There's a great sense of design behind this game. From the way the levels flow into each other, to the progression of escalating boss fights, everything looks in place.

Even the unique bullet colors have consistent meanings; some can be absorbed, some can be reflected, and some can be shot down. Knowing when to shoot, when to reflect, and when to just let off the fire button and recharge, is the key to victory.

The scoring system comes naturally. Use the reflect feature well, and get big multipliers. It's great fun sending off a mass of reflected bullets and homing lasers, followed by some giant x64 kills. Or for those who just want to play to the end and enjoy the spectacle, continues are awarded on a regular basis to aid progress.

Finally the renowned doujin Shoot'em up trilogy "The Tale of ALLTYNEX" is getting released on Steam. Starting with RefleX the second game in the series.

Gameplay:
Polished and intuitive, the key mechanic of the game is your ships relfecting shield. When activated the shield reflects bullets, but your ships energy is drained fast and when it gets low enough the shield stops working and even your weapons get weaker. So using the reflector-shield requires timing and strategy, mastering the game requires a lot of pattern recognition, good timing and knowing when to use the shield.

Sound:
The sound design is spot-on, catchy electronic retro music. With nice sound effect feedback from explotions and hits.

Graphics:
Looks basically like an Arcade game from the early 90's. But with some modern effects like lensflares and transparencies. It's pretty good looking for a low resolution 2D game, but the animation is somewhat lacking. The explotions and lazer effects look however satisfying.

Overall:
Impressive for a Doujin game, this could have passed as an professionally produced Arcade game in the 90's. I would recommend this game for any veteran fans of the Shoot'em up genre, the gameplay and music is top notch. But the graphics do look dated, and it is a shame that the developer did not allow making modifications to the game, so it is missing Steam achievements and leaderboards. Also the game lacks configuration options in-game, you have to find the config executable in the steamapps/common/RefleX directory.

For people completely new to the genre, out of the games available on Steam I still recommend starting out with Ikaruga. The only reason being it looks modern and has a great well polished PC port with full Steam features. However RefleX is likely more fun and easier to grasp than Ikaruga for beginners, but not everyone will accept the dated look.

Reflex is a older Bullet Hell game that was recently ported to Steam.

Graphics are similar to the 16-bit era, rather simplistic but still appealing.

The music is, like a lot of BH games, highly addictive. Personally, I feel that Angel Dust (Entropy battle) and Air (Stage 6) are the best in game, though The Scorpions Poison (Scorpio Battle) is a close runner up.

Okay, so this, along with the rest of the Tale of ALLTYNEX trilogy, is widely regarded in shmup circles as one of the best doujin (Japanese indie) shmups ever, and it really is very good. The gameplay revolves around your ability to produce a reflective shield, similar to Giga Wing. If you kill an enemy with a reflected bullet, you get a score multiplier for a little while. If you continue killing enemies with reflected bullets while the multiplier is still active, it goes even higher, to a maximum of x64. You can't just keep the shield on all the time, though, as you have a limited amount of energy for it, which recharges while you aren't using it, and does so more quickly if you aren't shooting. Speaking of shooting, your firepower is tied directly to how much shield energy you have left. As an aside, you don't get a traditional lives system in this game. Instead, you have a health gauge which is fully repaired at certain points. Whether or not you will prefer this to a traditional lives system is subjective.

As for the presentation, the music, graphics, and story are top-notch. I have nothing more to add there. My only real complaint here is that this version of RefleX doesn't have the Steam overlay (even though ALLTYNEX Second and Kamui will), so you'll need something like Puush if, say, you want to take a screenshot of your personal best score. There are also no online leaderboards (also something the other two games in the trilogy will have). Overall, though, if you haven't bought this yet, go ahead and do so. It's awesome.

FANTASTIC vertical shmup with an instrinsically satisfying gimmick: Your button that isn't "shoot" reflects projectiles and laser beams allowing you to focus on combat rather than power-up collection. Great graphics and mesmermizing Mode 7-esque sprite rotation sucks you in as you respond to manic bullet threats from all sides and all dimensions. I much prefer horizontal shmups but this one grips me like few shooters can. I can't really compare it to anything properly but it definitely brings me back to playing Truxton on the Mega Drive or 1942 in the arcade.

This game may not have the best graphics "amimations are a little choppy" but the gameplay, music and controlls are outstanding. The game is pretty hard and I only recommend to fans verticle shoters because you need quite abit of skill to progress in this game. This game is simmular to the old turbo graphixs shoters and arcade shoter. I give it a 8/10 must buy!

There are a lot of bad 2D shmups on Steam. This isn't one of them. In fact, it's pretty dang good. If this had came out on the PS1 or Saturn, it'd have been a big deal, and that's a high compliment.

Straightforward controls. Straightforward mechanics.. Shield bounces back bullets, which is the key mechanic. Old school pixel graphics. Old school rock solid collision detection. Old school bullet overload.

If any of that appeals, you should be looking out for this!
