Ever play through megaman?
Ever hear of Protoman? And how he has an unstable life reactor that could explode at any form of shock?
Yeah, In a perfect world, where megaman is still a thing, There's Explodemon. Your foul mouth/ ill translated metal bootcan hero who... Explodes constantly. Under your control if used frequently enough.
So far, no guns, just explodemon and his additional abilities granted through explosion. Dashing, double jumps, chain explosions, critical explosions. Pretty much megaman without a gun or abilities until he explodes. It runs in close paralell with megaman without crossing very much, and I say it this way because it gives you an experience that says, hey, this is really like megaman, but it's not megaman in enough ways to ever toss it up to replace megaman yet. Hopefully If the developer can find ways to make more games or even eventually have more stable robots be made in spin offs, there may be hope for the platform puzzle shooter outside of mighty 8, or a bad game from the publisher capcom themselves.
On the game, It grants a very megaman and bass feel. As basic player functions are very relevant and it doesn't become a ton of stages that scream come back later for items that seem essential, as to my knowledge, there aren't very many of those items, so it feels very arcade-y in the idea that you can come back later to score faster and better times, but not only because you missed an ability or heart tank. Additionally, Bosses respawn, so instead of having an empty stage, If ever you come back and wonder what it's like to defeat a vanilla monster with full power, you'll know. At least so far, don't quote me on that.
Altogether, If you have a fond memory of megaman and miss the game, but know as soon as you fire it up It'll just be you simulating complete success. Try explodemon. It's different, the gameplay is interesting, and it is very rewarding and open enough to allow you to quickly change your mind, as every room is its own checkpoint. So if you goof a puzzle or didn't see you needed to do something cool above, you can restart from the checkpoint and figure it out better, more efficiently or however you feel you need to do it. All without dying.
If that sounds like fun, You'll enjoy it. As soon as you get the concept of having to explode to reach your potential. If you don't understand it. You'll probably rage until you get it. Then you'll enjoy it.
