What the developers have to say:

“Crea has been in active development for over two years. An alpha version has been publicly available for over a year, with thousands of players. We recognized from the beginning that to make Crea the best it can be we would need to look to our community for feedback. Crea has now reached a stage where we are comfortable sharing it with Steam Early Access enthusiasts in hopes to gain even more valuable feedback.

As with all Early Access titles, Crea is still in development. There are some missing features and content along with some bugs. However, a great deal of the game is now available. Below we have outlined all current and planned features and content. As we release updates we will do our best to keep this information up-to-date.

If you have any doubts about Crea, then add it to your wish list and check back occasionally to see what progress is being made.”

Weekly Update #8

Largest weekly update ever! You'll quickly find that we have made some substantial changes to Crea.

First and foremost, Channeling as you know it has been more or less removed. Skills are now singular lessing the number of button presses to execute it. To further streamline skill execution there is now a quickbar that skills can be placed onto and executed with a single button press.

Channeling is still possible through idols that can be found in treasure chests. There are four Aer idols to channel from; Aegnix, Aeolus, Lacies and Silvan. Channeling these Aer will alter the elemental spells. In the future we hope to add in several more idols and have channeling affect several aspects of the game.

Going along with these changes, elemental resistances have been removed. Now elemental attacks have a chance to inflict elemental status effects.

Another major change is now talents must be unlocked to progress past level 30; however, each character can only unlock 2 talents. This change will help further distinguish characters from one another. For those who wish to max out everything, talent are automatically unlocked on Easy mode.

There are many more changes that you can find below. Much of this absolutely a work in progress so please keep that in mind but also be sure to provide feedback on everything even if you think we're going to be changing something.

Thanks everyone for your continued support!

Some more big news! Kelley and I (Jasson) are going to be showing Crea at MineCon this upcoming weekend. We're at the airport this very moment getting ready to board and fly to London. If you are by chance going to be there then be sure to look for our booth!

This is a pretty standard Terraria style game. The only differences are that you craft NPCs and in order to learn new recipes you need to find a material and then research on it. You can craft from chests, which is really nice.

By far the biggest downside is the bugs right now. They simply make the game no fun because you're constantly losing items that you crafted, losing characters, having skills get bugged etc. Give it 6 months or so for them to fix all the bugs and then it'll be worth it.

This game is actually pretty good. It has some really good mechanics in it, like RPG elements and the ability to teleport back home straight from the start, great additions to the sandbox genre. Really good. Addictive and a lot of fun.

I originally found the controls difficult and was moved to write a bad review because of it. I dug a little further and found a community guide on steam that helped me learn the basics. Now changed to a positive review because this game actually deserves it.

If you're willing to be a bit patient for the first hour while you learn some controls, this is great fun and highly recommended.

Early Access Review
A decent 2D exploration/adventure game.

• Crafting and research makes progression non-linear and fun.
• Very very easy to mod.
• Creatures are interesting.
• Skill system works well.
• The underground is interesting with many things to find and fight, with many items to come upon.

• Needs more variation; not enough to do in the game after a point.
• Gravity and movement are a bit stilted and awkward.
• Overworld is very boring.

Of course this game is still in development, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I can't say that the artwork is top notch, or the combat is perfect, but damn this game is charming as all get out! The RPG-style exp gain and skill buying, and the research system go a long way to set it apart from other games in the 2D building genre too.

It's not everything you could ever want from a game, but it sure is fun to play, and keeps me coming back for more!

Early Access Review
I am someone who was (and probably still is) a Terraria fanatic. I've put 1500+ hours into Terraria. I liked Minecraft a lot, too. I love open world games that are full of exploration, lots of things to do, and lots of loot to drown yourself in. 2d side scrolling games like this tend to be called Metroidvania games.

Many games have tried to de-throne Terraria as the next great Metroidvania game; Darkout, Edge of Space, Windforge, Asteria, Starbound to name a few. Many games have fallen seriously short and their pages are filled with mixed or negative reviews. Some are still in development and are actually becoming good games, but Terraria still remains king of Metroidvania Mountain.

I first got Crea many months ago and it was rough, unpolished and hard to play. I waited. MANY updates have come out since then so I decided to give it another try a few weeks ago. I am glad I did.

Crea has an in-depth crafting system that actually takes a bit of thought to figure out. You don't just have materials, you have crafting methods. They call it Chaos Crafting. There's a variety of crafting techniques to apply while you are crafting something. It's up to you to find a combination that works well. If you do, you can get some amazing results.

The enemies in Crea are likewise as well thought out. You can't just run up and whack and enemies like you do to Terraria's slimes. Enemies in this game have different attacks, but they all have certain patterns that you can figure out.

What the game needs most is variety in what the player experiences. Once you craft that next tier of armor and weapons you're off to do more of the same, just in a higher level area, battling the same monsters who are simply higher level. The game does have biomes, but as of this review, they're only surface biomes that don't mean a whole lot at the moment.

However, the game is solid enough and enjoyable enough that the $15 price tag is well worth it at this point. Combat is a blast in this game. Since development is still very much underway who knows what we might see for the biomes or maybe even new, different underground zones.

Crea has a ways to go before it could be a contender for king of Metroidvania Mountain. It's not there yet. It's got a ways to go. But it's certainly headed in the right direction.
