It's the original Half-Life, with less modding support, texture glitches, and improved water effects. If you already own the Goldsrc version of the game, the only reason to get Source would be out of curiousity during a sale. Otherwise, there aren't nearly enough additions to justify the additional purchase. Half-Life Deathmatch Source is fun...when you can find people to play it with, which isn't nearly enough.
So, while it is as good as the original Half-Life, it is also nearly identical to it as well. You're better off buying the standard version, which is compatible with Opposing Force and Blue Shift, unlike Half-Life: Source.

In Half-Life: Source, you play Mario's brother Luigi, who can jump higher than Mario and has less traction while running.

Consequently, where Mario Freeman cannot jump completely over every NPC's head without a running triple jump in the normal Half-Life, Luigi (the protagonist of Half-Life: Source) is capable of such a feat. His jumping abilities allow him to easily bypass many obstacles that were originally designed with only Mario Freeman in mind. In this regard, Half-Life: Source is much like the bonus game of Super Mario Galaxy, wherein you get to replay the exact same game with a different Super Mario Brother. Jumps that would have been impossible for Mario Freeman to clear are easily performed by his brother Luigi Freeman.

Unlike Super Mario Galaxy, though, Half-Life: Source does not come included with the game it is based on. While it's interesting playing the game with a different character's physical capabilities, Mario Freeman is still the true star and the one you will remember and return to more often.

So, should you get Half-Life: Source? My recommendation is to stick with the original. Maybe Luigi Freeman will get a spin-off of his own someday, but this is not his game.

This review is postitive because the original game is really good. Honestly, is doesn't really change the graphics much. I mean sure, its got some better better HD models and lighting, but overall, it's mostly the same. So if you already have the first half life, I wouldn't buy this. Don't take it the wrong way, it's still awesome, but I'd get the 1998 half life over this.

It's Half-Life, but on Source Engine.
It has no advantages over Half-Life on Gold Source engine.

If you have played the original Half-Life, there's no reason to play this.

The only use for it is to mount it in Garry's Mod.

Half-Life... Easily one the first FPS done perfectly while other developers went through their own growing pains of figuring out the magic formula that makes FPS of today so awesome. I had the previlage of playing this class on the Playstation 2 first. I miss those sweeter graphics vs the PC but more importantly the PC plays exactly the same. I loved the game enough that a minor graphic downgrade it perfectly acceptable because I don't own a Playstation 2 anymore but I still get to keep Half-Life. Excellent gameplay with a story that makes you want to see what happens next. Even after beating this game a dozen times, I still come back one every two to three years. It just weathers time that well. If you never played Half-Life, don't let it's age and dated graphics fool you. As cheap as you can get it today enjoy a fresh experience that shows you how great games began before the rules were known. And if you owned this once, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want this classic gem back. Definitely great memories...

Ive been a steam user for 9 years, i loved the goldsource games, i even have the original WON version of Half-Life. I Love the Half-Life series and its mods. This game is not one of the games i love.

Sure it may look like the original half-life with uppgraded graphics.

Sure it may "Feel" like the original Half-Life untill the bugs happen...

When i reinstalled the game to see why i havent played this version of the game i finnaly rememberd..

This game has gamebreaking bugs, that will halt your progress. First of all, let me list down the issues i had when starting this game

If your steam is in any other language other than English, the main menu will say #clickeble menu ON EVERY OPTION. You will have to change the language on steam to English!

When playing, sometimes when you explore before "unforseen consequenses" be sure to pick up your suit before you talk to the guard or else, your save will be corrupted.

When in missile silo, where the tentacles are, resetting the power to the machine to later turn on the fuel, the hatch leading to the fuel will be permanently closed. For me there is no fix.

When the game needs the user to open up the console and cheat to get it working, then you know its wrong.

The game feels like it was halfassed. Every element in this game feels flawed compared to Half-Life (Goldsource). Where skripts to open doors will fail to load. Events wont happen. Buy Half-Life instead of this. I cant stress that enough..

Absolutely grand game, but this version is slower and has glitches galore, so just stick with the original version if you ask me ;)

Valve gone and ruined this game with their stupid updates that have just made the game more unstable and glitchy.

OMG! I played it when it first came out and loved it. Made me hooked for life. Blue Shift, Opposing Force, 2, E1, E2, all of them. Was bored, bought and d/l Source and... IDK if it is original bugs or new bugs but with out noclip I don't know how I'd get through some of the areas. Oh, the vent is half an inch too short to just walk through but an inch too high off the ground to just crawl through.

But still, enjoying the some what updated graphics and ragdoll physics. Just started tonight and played through to Blast Pit before deciding it was time for bed.

But other than the few times I needed noclip, the game is as good as ever and makes me want to buy BS and OF and then move through HL2, E1, and E2 all over again on my next day off. I would say get this game if you love the series but if are new, maybe stick to HL2? Some will whine the graphics aren't amazing, and I do miss the gravity gun(Best gun in any game ever) but this classic is classic for a reason!

Is it worth it if you already own the original? YES!!! Now, please, come ON people! Stop hating it because it is "the same as the original". I will tell you why it is BETTER than the original. 1. If you beat the game but forgot to save, this game allows you to go to ANY point in the game. 2. It is a nice love letter to those Half-Life 1 and exansion players. 3. Yes, it is the same game, BUT, Valve wants new players to go try the 1998 classic, with better lighting, physics, and just some better mechanics that Gold Source could not handle. BONUS FOR GMOD PLAYERS. 4. You can't use Gold Source models in the game without addons, so now you don't have to. So I give this game a 10 out of 10. So new players who haven't had a chance to try the original, hope you like it, and people hating the game because the reason stated before, hope you know see reason Valve made this game!

A higher graphics verion of half life.

its a very very interesting game, i was suprised how into the story i got even though its pretty basic, the shooting is solid adn the veriety of weapons are wierd and solid and they feel like the have weight and hit hard.

the puzzle solutions make sence but are sometimes really hard, say i spent 2 hours trying to get past the are with radioactive barrels and a river or radioactive waste yet wtill felt into the game.

also this game can be punishing auto saves can be far apart and if your unprepaered you can be destoyed by enemys.

this game is amazing i recamend it to any puzzle or fps fan

8/10

aslo plz ignore any spelling mistakes, also im bad at rating /10 just accept this game is amazing

Not worth the $10. Unlike Black Mesa: Source, this isn't a total conversion, just unneeded weapon model updates and small changes to water and NPC's. Play the original for the experience, play Black Mesa for the graphics.

Now, I didn't encounter any game-breaking bugs that I've read some other people complain about, but since I need to complain about SOMETHING, here is my review.

Hitboxes: They normally work fine. Except the time I wasted 10 bullets shooting a barnacle realising they all go through it. Had the same problem with houndeyes during the Blast Pit chapter. The real problem was with the Apache helicopter during the Surface Tension chapter where most of my rockets seemed to go through it, so unless you're lucky or skilled enough to hit it in a specific spot, you're ♥♥♥♥ed.

The AI was really ♥♥♥♥in' dumb in some situations. I'm not saying that it was perfect in the original GoldSrc version, but how did they manage to dumb it down?

Also, some textures and sound files were missing.

tl;dr - Stick with the GoldSrc version.
