It's Half-Life, but on Source Engine.
It has no advantages over Half-Life on Gold Source engine.

If you have played the original Half-Life, there's no reason to play this.

The only use for it is to mount it in Garry's Mod.

In Half-Life: Source, you play Mario's brother Luigi, who can jump higher than Mario and has less traction while running.

Consequently, where Mario Freeman cannot jump completely over every NPC's head without a running triple jump in the normal Half-Life, Luigi (the protagonist of Half-Life: Source) is capable of such a feat. His jumping abilities allow him to easily bypass many obstacles that were originally designed with only Mario Freeman in mind. In this regard, Half-Life: Source is much like the bonus game of Super Mario Galaxy, wherein you get to replay the exact same game with a different Super Mario Brother. Jumps that would have been impossible for Mario Freeman to clear are easily performed by his brother Luigi Freeman.

Unlike Super Mario Galaxy, though, Half-Life: Source does not come included with the game it is based on. While it's interesting playing the game with a different character's physical capabilities, Mario Freeman is still the true star and the one you will remember and return to more often.

So, should you get Half-Life: Source? My recommendation is to stick with the original. Maybe Luigi Freeman will get a spin-off of his own someday, but this is not his game.

Absolutely grand game, but this version is slower and has glitches galore, so just stick with the original version if you ask me ;)

Original review from 30 Jul, 2012 @ 12:58pm --- This is more of a comment; Half-Life Source is Half-Life upgraded onto the source engine and with some minimal graphic enchanments. There really is no difference between this and Half-Life other than chapter selecting, gmod compatibility, and source enging modding and editing etc.

Edit:

With the current EA release of Black Mesa it made me think. A bunch of people on the BM forums are complaining about how it's a paid mod and all that junk, but really BM is a giant remastering, a complete overhaul built from the ground up in a whole new light, and yet Half-Life: Source still lingers around and has no real fresh thing about it other than it's simply on the source engine and there is no mod community for it at all.

People should be getting ♥♥♥♥♥♥ off at this than BM, because this has more reason for it. If BM was released by Valve, or just suddenly popped up without anything previously knowing about it, it would have no hate whatsoever.

Half-Life: Source should not be sold separately because it has nothing to it that's worth a full 10 dollar price tag on it's own. It should just be bundled and sold with the original Half-Life.

Is it worth it if you already own the original? YES!!! Now, please, come ON people! Stop hating it because it is "the same as the original". I will tell you why it is BETTER than the original. 1. If you beat the game but forgot to save, this game allows you to go to ANY point in the game. 2. It is a nice love letter to those Half-Life 1 and exansion players. 3. Yes, it is the same game, BUT, Valve wants new players to go try the 1998 classic, with better lighting, physics, and just some better mechanics that Gold Source could not handle. BONUS FOR GMOD PLAYERS. 4. You can't use Gold Source models in the game without addons, so now you don't have to. So I give this game a 10 out of 10. So new players who haven't had a chance to try the original, hope you like it, and people hating the game because the reason stated before, hope you know see reason Valve made this game!

I use to recommend this game... I don't anymore.

Valve gone and ruined this game with their stupid updates that have just made the game more unstable and glitchy.

Valve please come back and fix your ♥♥♥♥.

The only reason, the ONLY reason I am giving this game a negative recommendation, is because Black Mesa is now available on Steam. Half-Life is a fantastic game, but this version of it is a sloppy port at best. Save yourself the heartache of playing this version and go buy Black Mesa. Black Mesa includes Trading Cards and Steam Achievements, which this version of Half-Life, sadly, does not.

Here's a link to Black Mesa, which is far more worth your time: http://store.steampowered.com/app/362890/

A higher graphics verion of half life.

its a very very interesting game, i was suprised how into the story i got even though its pretty basic, the shooting is solid adn the veriety of weapons are wierd and solid and they feel like the have weight and hit hard.

the puzzle solutions make sence but are sometimes really hard, say i spent 2 hours trying to get past the are with radioactive barrels and a river or radioactive waste yet wtill felt into the game.

also this game can be punishing auto saves can be far apart and if your unprepaered you can be destoyed by enemys.

this game is amazing i recamend it to any puzzle or fps fan

8/10

aslo plz ignore any spelling mistakes, also im bad at rating /10 just accept this game is amazing

For my review of Half-Life, check out my review of the original game. This is just a short insight on my thoughts of the Source version.

Half-Life: Source is simply the original Half-Life ported to Valve's newer (at the time) Source engine, it doesn't bring anything new to the table aside from a few new menu options such as selecting a chapter, but it does improve a handful of aspects, mostly minor and technical. The most noteable changes are to the water, the ragdoll physics and the map lighting (in some cases).

There are plenty of other minor things that you will notice after playing through once, it's like a new layer of polish, but nothing that would make me recommend buying this version over the original game as unfortunately the Source port has also caused a large number of bugs and errors to arise that were never in the original version. While some of the new features and mechanics in the Source engine are nice, the game hasn't really been updated to take those aspects into account, and thus, more problems popped up.

So I have mixed feelings about Half-Life: Source, but I'd say that this version is worth playing through at least once if you are a Half-Life fan, it has a slightly different feel to it but ultimately I'd say to just stick to the original version of the game instead. It may be dated but that's what gives it it's charm.

Having heard some good things about Half-Life, I finally purchased it one day. As a huge fan of FPS games, I wanted to like this game.

Sadly, I didn't. At least not as much as other FPS games I've played, such as Doom, Quake and Unreal. Those games are better than this on many levels. For one, they didn't have annoying platforming with mechanics that just barely function. They also didn't include frustratingly difficult human enemies that drain your health from 100% down to 5%, sections where you had to run and jump through enemy hordes and traps because the game suddenly decided to not give you any ammunition, or areas you couldn't get out of if you happened to find yourself lost in them.

Half-Life, on the other hand, did include all of those things, and those are the reasons why I only enjoyed it so much. While the game shines in its presentation, it falls short on its gameplay, at least for me. Unless you're into stuff of the aforementioned sort, I can't say I'd recommend Half-Life either.

While a pretty simple port of Half-Life to the Source Engine, it's still worth the extra money. This version has better graphics, physics and the Source Engine. Oh! And animated background for the Main Menu.
Overall.. 8.5/10.
