This turn based strategy game takes on a very authentic early 20th century Europe.

Assume direct control of any country before the first world war, command its military, navy and air force.
The nation descriptions are accurate and give you a general idea of the situation that befalls you in the scenario that you choose.

Combat is simply moving grouped units through territories adding in factors such as trenches, artillery, terrain. It is done simply, but with stacked units. Battles can take weeks in game.

Armies have accurate sprites with superb uniforms/skins for each distinct nation, they can be moved by land via your nations veichle or the faster railway/railcart stockpile, or by sea via transport capacity.

Rescources like Arms, Fuel, Coal, Metal, Food, are nessecary for the survival of your Nations war machine.
Fund rebel insurgents or political factions in rival nations to ensue disorder and public unrest to the point of armed rebellion and even civil war.

Similar to the time, Alliances are made and broken easily. However do not expect Allies help if their borders are far from your own until they develop the technology/resources to send military intervention. (IE USA helping GB & France)

I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the Making History series. Or anyone who is interested in first world war era.

The Worst Game I have ever purchased in my entire gaming history, as a hardcore Strategy Fan, I must ensure and truthfully advice you, NOT TO BUY THIS GAME, it is a ripoff, ONLY BUY IT IF IT GOES DOWN TO $9.99, they are putting it at $39.99! WTH IS WORTH THE $39.99, it is a basic, crap graphics, piece of poo, it does nothing but give you a couple of screens on a map, the AI and countries falling apart doesn't even resemble realism, it is the WORST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED. This is becoming a Trend, first Viking Conquest (but that is reasonably good in some way), Rome II before that (good now, but was absolute crap), all high priced bar for VC, but VC is still a utter poo and waste of my money so far, plus this game is taking the mic, charging at the price of Galactic Civilizations III shortly, saying its nearly done, I got it a few hours ago and it feels like a Pre-Alpha spinoff of Europa Universalis I with absolutely nothing coded into it.

This game has such great potential, but it still needs some work done.

Pros & Cons

+ Historacly accurate events, such as the sinking of the Titanic, to Pancho Villa in Mexico, sometimes even the Soviet revolution.

+ Fairly easy to learn, atleast if you've played any of the other Making Historys

- Large ammount of bugs. Some make it unplayable.

- The AI is un beliavably too easy.

- No real challenge unless you play as a non-great power nation

- Absolutley NO tutorial

- Abolutley NO editor

+ Railroad & Road systems to move armies faster

+ The map is alot bigger from the previous MHs

- Research system is confusing, and clunky

- Pointless "Filler" Techs make it take way too long to research basic necessities

- Ending turns takes way too long mid/end game

- Camera does this stutter ♥♥♥♥ when you move it at all

+ Combat is a blast if bugs don't take over

+ Trenches are easy to make, and very usefull

- AI Dosen't use any fortifications to my knowledge

- Other nations often refuse any diplomacy, even a tiny trade agreement

- Overall un-enjoyable


Also, my main problem wit hthe game is how delayed it has been. I am dying for an editor or a tutorial, and that was supposed to go with the full release, which was supposed to be on July. This game is not even close to worth $30, and I would like to hear some dev feedback from this review.


I'd give this a 5/10. Below Average.



*UPDATE*

So, I put a few more hours in the game, and I have some more pros and cons

+ There are tons of cool events if you do certain actions, that add hours of enjoyment

+ Recent patch fixed some bugs

- Nations "Mobilize" Forces and declare war on you just for attacking the smalles nation by them

- Recources seem to just drop suddenly and randomly. Not sure why

- It seems impossible to secure an alliacne with another nation

+ The option to re-liberate a nation into anything you want is awesome, even how the flags change

- Some nations' AI personality is kind of innacurate

+ All games are completley random


That's about it, I am stating to enjoy this title more as I play it, but just can't reccomend it yet.

Ah, new year, new updates. I decided to play Making History a bit more, and I have a new verdict & what-not.

They have improved & worsened some things in the game, one thing they improved, is increase the need for artillery.

However, it is ridiculous now. You could have 20 units of Infantry, V.S 3 Units of militia, and 10 Artillery pieces and lose that battle.

I'm not even joking. That can happen.

Also, I have no idea how to get more artillery, therefor the AI will get loads of victories over me.

And, they have improved the difficulty by half-way. The Entente is still way too easy. I can take over Germany as France in literally 5 Turns. Russia is how it should be, Britain, never played as them, so I don't know, but, for the Central Powers, (I.e AH or Germany) Is extremley difficult now.

I absolutley cannnot win as Germany, or AH, which actually makes me happy, that they are starting to make the game harder, but it would be nice to see the same for the Entente nations.

Oh, and one thing I am begging you, devs to change on release...

*MAKE BRITAIN'S AI USEFULL*

I cannot tell you how many times Britain just dosen't even give a ♥♥♥♥ about France losing the war. They will just ♥♥♥♥ there, and twiddle their thumbs watching their allies fight & die for their lives.

+ Artillery plays a large role in battles

- Artillery can be complteley over-powered

- AI Still dosen't use Trenches

+ Resources are now alot more stable

+ Even more ingame events

- Britain's AI is completley and utterly useless.

- Still useless techs

- Construction still way too long

- Recruitment still too long


Final Verdict = 6/10. Still not very good.

This game is basically a less complex version of paradox/supreme ruler games. IMO Paradox's Hearts of Iron does everything better and in a more realistic/complicated way. However, I find the making history series more fun than its competition simply because it takes away a lot of the unneeded complication while still making you feel like their is a large depth of choices to make. More importantly though, it takes away the huge micro managment nightmare of trying to control hundreds of units in hundreds of provinces that ultimately made me stop playing hearts of iron and supreme ruler. Here the combat may be less in depth, (your units are stacked and you only have a handful of units), but it plays much better and you don't have to give the AI control of your armies in order to avoid being overwhelmed.

Making history plays in turnbased rather than real time like its competition. I find it much more relaxing and easiear to play using the turn based formula. I also find that turn based flows more fluently than real time, as I found myself pausing constantly and missing things in the real time strategy games.

If your new to the series though I would recommend waiting for full release, as there is not a complete manual or encyclopedia and many of the critical game mechanics are completely unexplained, and very hard to figure out yourself. There is also issues with rebels and other game balance issues ATM. Personally I have gone back to playing making history 2 (which you should look into getting if your more interested in ww2 than ww1), while I wait for this one to be polished up.

Edit: Just to add that this game's dev team from what I have seen on the forums is very upstanding. They interact politely with the community, value feedback even if it's negative, and implement fixes based on feedback. Much better devs than what I have seen on a lot of other forums.

-Recommended Title-

Personally, I recommend it. MH:GTW, is a wip...and a fairly easy gs (grand strategy) title to get into. The graphics are fine, they have a dated look - which is great, because the look, fits the period.

More content is being continually added, with an additional scenario being released last week.

The dev's are engaging with the community with regular updates, and are very active on the forums.

It's a different style to typical gs titles, to play - and I like that. But I still feel like I have control of most areas of my "Empire" (Im playing as New Zealand, and trying to conquer the world, tehehe)

At the end of the day, it depends on how passionate you are about period gs games and adopting early access in spending your dollars. But I think, participating in helping to get a Great War gs title released, just adds to the experience, which I enjoy :)

The game is scalable , you can sit back and cruise as a smaller nation ( low ranked) or get "amongst the thick of it" as one of the top 15 nations .

Bear in mind, I've only played 5 hours so far, but I like what I see in the early access version.

There will be a tutorial included in the release. the current game manual, is quite extensive - and is being added to, continuously.

There have been reports of crashes with the game by other ea adopters. To date, I have not experienced any. Performance does need to be tweaked though, espc. during the AI moves. Otherwise the game runs fine on a Windows 8.1 laptop

While i loved the first two and wanted a world war 1 game from Making history so badly honestly im a tad disappointed with this one i know there were alot of revolutions during the time period but honestly it seems to be the huge part of the gameplay and can get in the way of other plans to the point where it becomes total war with the rebels which keeps me from really getting into the game cause everytime i get near being able to invade a country an endless rebel war happens though i like the idea of having rebels uprise and would bring flavour to the gameplay it becomes rather a major annoyance then a cool feature i do reccomend this game but would like the rebels to be toned down and not to be a major blockade to a majority of the players plans

The Rebels are more tame but it seems that every time a nation declares war on you for the smallest thing it sets off a huge chain reaction of wars i want challenge but having Nations declare war on me for invading an attacking country when they have no land near them or treaties it becomes pure annoyance i want to love TGW like i loved the first two but with all these annoyances they take away what could be challenging and just try to put cheap reason for a world war i still want to Recommend this game but i recommend waiting for alot of things to be fixed but if you want to try it your self its still a worthy buy the Puppet system is better then ever with being able to pick the Religion Ideaology and even make up a name for the new state the Micromanaging is Perfect and keeps the game fresh better then the other two did

This game is easily worth it's price several times over, one of the best grand strategy games I ever played, I just love how they have constructed the menu and all the tabs, it's all made easy and logic, everything is placed where it should for easy access to micro management, unlike other grand titles, the menu is often a real mess, you often need to be all over the place before you find what you are looking for and it's not uncomon you would have to study a tutorial for hours before you even know how to play the game, not in this game, it is easy and logic to get into and still it is very deep with a lot of micro management, that is one thing I really apprechiate with this game, I also apprechiate the dept of the political and interaction with other countrys, there is plenty you could do there, this is often left out in other titles, or are very simple, but I think this is one of the most fun part of grand strategy games, I also love the design of the game, I don't know which programing they used but all I can say it looks and feels more modern, the graphics even if it is less important in a game like this is nothing to complain about, the overall feeling of the game is smooth, at the current time this game is under developement, but it is fully playable, the only glitches I have notised it, when you end turn and all the countrys flags swish by, the nazy flag is in there, this is from the first world war, I don't think the nazis where even invented back then, it should come later in the game I think, and the other glitch or whatever is that the game respond very badly your mouse when you would like to look around at the map, the map sometimes doesn't follow and sometimes you must use the arrow keys because of that, but I have no doubt this will be fixed until release this developer have made great games in the past and they have all been great, so I fully recommend this game.

This is one of the best map games I have played since MH2 came out. I love having a game that is set in WW1 I tend to find this period to be the most interesting. The developers are really open about the updates and the changes they are making. I find that they interact with me community quite well. There are a lot go great features that come along with this game such as being able to declare unrestrictive submarine warfare. I feel it really adds to the realism that this game imposes and makes it feel more enticing. There a very some features that are not yet added but they are working long hours and hard days to make this happen and to get the few bugs fixed. Overall this is the best early access game I have ever played and watched it being very well built from the ground up.

This game is awesome, at the moment you can play as germany, France, and a few others. as it is now i have been playing for over a couple of hours and its really good. If you like the previous making history games you will love this one. The game has been running really smooth and I havent experienced any bugs yet. There area few thing that havent been finished like casualties in battles show up for me as "XX" but so far its running really smooth and is a lot of fun I think you will be pleasently surprised. The game is a hudge overall from the previous making history's. You can really see this in the recuritment and development of infurstructure. Overall as a early access i give it buy as it runs smooth and delivers on the prmoises the dev's gave. Like I said only a few countires are playable, but more will come. only other issue i have experienced is for some reason AH will not deploy their troops to the russian border even though they have lost two provicnes so far. Many of their larger armies stay stationed in the center of the country or on the allied western border. Not sure why as Italy has helped me with France to the point that mainland france is all but one provience away from being defeated.

So when I initially wrote this review, I did so when the game was nothing but a few days old. Now that time has progressed, and I felt that this game has come a long way, I would like to update this to give possible buyers a better perspective of what they are getting themselves into.

One of my favorite things so far is the uniqueness you find among the buildable armies. Typically in strategy games such as this, you are often handed a few sprities for a variety of nations. This somewhat lessens the visual appeal of the game because how fun would it be when "everyone" looks like a german soldier. In TWG, the visuals are better such as when you play Japan, your troops look unique compared to what they would look like in Korea. They approach this in a cool way and while minor I think it goes a long way.

Next is the micromanaging and complexity. In previous MH games, players were able to research and produce one item per city which could be a soldier, tank, goods, and so forth. But in TGW, players can actually assign individual factories to produce goods, weapons, or tanks while also training your next batch of troops. Research is going on in the background while you focus building a nation or war machine. This expands the possiblities when it comes to determining how your nation will go but can be consuming to the average joe who just wants to build stuff and fight. Players also must also keep in mind the resources in which you must have to keep your factories turning out new stuff and goes into a new system of trading.

Overall, this game is headed in the right direction, and from a gamer whos been gaming for ages, and a long time MH fan, I feel this game can be the next great stepping stone for this company. The AI is getting better, and has at times made me bang my head because it actually out smarted me on several occasions. If you are into strategy and nation building games, TGW is for you.

In my opinion, it brings a new breath of fresh air to a genre i've long loved and has provided something new. Hopefully they continue on the path to success!

This game is a turnbased game. The developer put alot of emphasis on diplomatic. This is a review on the early access. Will make a better one once the game have officially released.

Excellent Game.

To whom ever enjoys historical strategy, and wondered about "what if" alternate history, this is a game for you. I have been waiting for a WW1 game for a long time; I finally have one. It is very detailed and there is plenty of stats and data, i.e. Diplomacy, Research, Economy, Resources, Trade, Government, Military, and much more. Pretty much everything you would expect from such a game. But what i really like about this game is that its simple enough for new players to learn quickly, but not to simple that hardcore players will be bored or disapointed. The UI is clean and crisp, easy to read and to understand. Army managment is easy and streamlined compared to other games of this genre. A welcome improvement IMO.

Now of course this game is still early access so there is many features that are absent or not working as it should. The AI still needs improving and tweaking also. But that is to be expected with any beta. I am very much looking forward to the fully completed version of this game. IMO i like this game more then any of the Paradox games i have tried because the UI is beter organized and easier to interact.

Making History: The Great War has huge potential and will not disappoint when it becomes fully operational ;)

This game is excellent. It has the perfect balance of being easy enough to pick up, but challenging and complex enough to keep players entertained for a long time. Developers seem very active, and friendly. If this game ends up like the previous installments, us players can expect to see developer support for a long time. 10/10 without a doubt.

A Solid game, and actually quite fun. If you're a fan of previous Making History games or a fan of Paradox Grand Strategies then you should enjoy this. Though it's no where near the complexity of a Paradox game, it is fun in it's respective elements. Yet the game is in it's early stages and there are many many bugs. If you think you can stand the bugs and still enjoy it then go right ahead and purchase it. But if you're one who is easily annoyed by bugs then i recommend holding off till later patches or maybe even release. Yet even though the numerous bugs show, I still can't help but enjoy this game.

Great work guys. I cant wait to see future updates for this game. I wont lie i love these kinda games but i feel this game needs a tutorial. It was kinda mind blowing the amout of unites and resources to mange. but there was a menu that was easy to navagate interface. but i could not find out how to make alliances witch was a downfall. if you are going to buy this keep in mind its a time comsuming game with a small bug here or there. Its not a quick command and counqer game like i thought it was kinda going to be. by the way if you are a mac player this runs great on mac :)

Early Access Review
Really liking the map, the way you build, trade, still needs a bit of work but as it is still in development i think they are well on the right track. Maybe a bit more depth to the way you develop your tech tree would be good. 8/10

Ok have spent over 10 hours in game, coming together nicely, this is a thinking persons game, if you want an i win button go play ARMA. For those who want a challenge this is the game for you, history buffs will like this. Easy to use interface, you can set virtually anything you can think of. Overall i rate this 8.5/10 (Definately a buy for history buffs)

Over 50 Hours now, tried a variety of countries, take your time to learn the game, dont rush in and expect to win, you wont, as you become more attuned to the war, and to running your country you will find better ways of getting the most out of your country. Easily the best WWI sim i have played and well worth the purchase price.

Early Access Review
The game is obviously still in an early development. However, this game will be great upon completion. If you are thinking about buying this game, it may seem a lot more confusing for you if you haven't played Making History II. At the moment, the game lacks many features and you can only play as Germany and France. But the devs are releasing patches quite often and in my opinion, this game was well worth the $20.
