It was great mistake that I thought this was going to be another fantastic fps game. It's more like inefficient, unnecessarily realistic military simulation game that is boring, tiring, and long.

There isn't much to say, it's a good tactical shooter. The missions are fun and it's full of drivable vehicles. Commanding a squad of soldiers is a little tedious because of the clunky command system but you get used to it. Other than that, I rather enjoyed my time in this game. There isn't anything particularly bad about it, the missions were challenging and I died a lot but I did manage to get by eventually. The campaign is non-linear, it gives you simple choices between differing fronts of engagement and those choices have benefits and consequences. I recommend it to anyone who fancies tactical shooters.

Pros:
  • Challenging missions
  • Full squad commands
  • Many drivable vehicles (air, ground, sea)
  • Non-linear campaign
  • Large open maps with fairly detailed environments
  • Interesting tactical firefights
Cons:
  • Some distant sounds will sound like they're near you.
  • Large scale engagements will sometimes resolve themselves before you even get there to take part. I often got lost and had to take detours through hills and towns just to get to the engagement point and by the time I got there, the battle was already won or lost. You need to be quick when you get your objective.
  • Objectives are not always clear. Might require some exploring, trial and error.
Neutral:
  • Menus/UI feel touchy and don't always respond to the first click
  • No music (for me it isn't a con because I usually turn game music off anyway)
  • AI is sporadic at best. It will either spot you from 800m away and snipe you or it will walk in random directions 100m off until you shoot at it. But once you do get it's attention, it seems to do alright in a fight.

Overall, I liked this game, it was fun.

Handily improves on the military simulation genre that its predecessor launched into the spotlight, with especially massive improvements to helicopters and combined arms warfare. The campaign is strong, with a 2000's era retelling of the Korean War set on a fictional Spanish-flavored island.

Fun Game, but this game runs like crap on Windows 10 and is horribly optimized. :( Don't buy (this ARMA) buy ARMA 2 or ARMA 3! Much nicer, and perform better :)

!!!!DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!!!!

Why you may ask?
Well the mutiplayer does not work!
There are NO servers because GameSpy is shutted down!
IF you only want the game for it's single-player mode go and buy it.
Or if you have more money just get the working Arma 2 or Arma 3.
Note: Arma 2 has a free mod of DayZ and i heard it's less buggy then the standalone one.

Do i recommend this game: NO

The most simplistic concept for a war game is to toss in a small story and a few friends and have a party Bohemia Interactive does it right. Making almost everything accessible within the game. This first person shooter does it right.

IF YOU HAVE A INTEL HD GRAPHICS CARD ON WINDOWS 7 64BIT. THIS GAME WILL NOT WORK UNDER THE NEWEST PATCH. (1.18). THIS BUG WILL NOT BE FIXED. THE GAME WILL NOT BE UPDATED.

IN ORDER TO GET IT TO WORK WITHOUT BUYING A COMPLETLY NEW VIDEO CARD,
1) RENAME ARMA.EXE TO ARMAOLD.EXE
2) SEARCH AROUND FOR A ARMA.EXE THAT IS FROM VERSION1.14 OR EARLIER, PREFERIBLY V1.14
2b) personally i use this download as the file contains a .PNG file showing a email from the publisher proving that it is a legally aquired download to fix a known bug. any other source i can not garuntee the legality of. but the legality of this download is clearly visible in the download file
3) MOVE THE NEW ARMA.EXE TO YOUR GAME INSTALL FOLDER.
4) THEN, IN THE DOWNLOAD SETTINGS , SET THE GAME TO ****NOT**** AUTO UPDATE.
5) enjoy.

MULTIPLAYER DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS FIX. THE ONLY WAY TO GET MULTIPLAYER TO WORK IS TO GET A NEW VIDEO CARD SINCE VERSION 1.18 DOES NOT PLAY WELL WITH INTEL HD GRAPHICS. NIVIDIA IS RECOMENDED.

great great great game, tons of fun with this game. for being 6 years old this game is still awsome. the best part is making your own combat situations. though there is one draw back to this game, when i first downloaded it, there was a problem with the sound. though with a little research online it was an easy fix. i would recomend this game to any one that wants a strategy game mixed with a first person shooter.

Must play. This is the most realistic game I know, at least infantry combat-wise, also it runs ok on highest settings in most computers since it's old and it's on discount. It will kick you in the nards, but just do yourself a favor and get this, no excuses!

ARMA: Combat Operations is the sequel to ARMA: Cold War Assault (aka Operation Flashpoint) and features quite a bit more realism than its predecessor, although the learning curve somehow manages to remain manageable. Anyone can play this game.

What's in store for you is quite possibly one of the most fun multiplayer modes in any game, ever. Although the GameSpy shutdown makes it a lot harder to host and join servers, if you can find someone willing to host a private game and get a group of friends together and play, you are in for an incredibly entertaining, yet challenging and tactical experience.

However, I found the singleplayer gameplay severely lacking compared to Cold War Assault. Unlike Cold War Assault, Combat Operations' campaign and single player missions are riddled with issues and AI problems, language and translation issues (especially in mission briefings), a much less engaging storyline, a generic soundtrack (some of which are bad remixes of Cold War Assault tracks), poor mission design/scripting, and many more flaws which make the singleplayer mode not really worth playing.

Combat Operations features a highly in-depth, yet also very easy to learn mission editor. The basic format of the mission editor has been pretty much identical across the ARMA series. You can create absolutely anything, and then with just a few clicks export the mission to singleplayer and multiplayer modes. I can say that me and my friends have spent far more time playing our own missions than the game's default multiplayer scenarios (and not because those are bad, either). The mission editor practically made this game for us.

Overall, I think ARMA: Combat Operations is an incredible achievement in terms of just how much entertainment value you can get from the multiplayer mode. However, the singleplayer mode feels bland, boring, and poorly designed. For 8 dollars, though, this game is an absolute steal because of how good the multiplayer gameplay is with friends.

Be warned, however. At least one of my friends has suffered from technical issues with this game that render it unplayable. This occurs most often on modern Windows 8 computers. Use caution if you are interested in buying this game.

The spiritual successor to the original Operation Flashpoint game, the most realistic war game you will find out there on the market today. It's dated by today's standards but still a great game with some amazing missions.

As a gamer who owns all ARMA series, I really want to say, from a retrospective perspective, the game is improving over years but not quite. The graphics and physics certainly become better in latter ARMA2 updates and in ARMA3: vehicles respond to rugged terrains, ragdoll systems etc. Yet that is the only thing I feel "realistic" about this game. Other elements are not at all close to real. The map is huge but monotonous(I guess because it's largely computer generated); the way objects interact is ultimately awkward(they still struggle with it in ARMA3); close-up scenario looks beautiful but depth field is very ♥♥♥♥♥♥. These ruthlessly dim the only few other highlights of ARMA.
