F.A.Q. LOOKALIKE REVIEW:

Q: What is this game?
A: Halo Spartan Assault!

Q: What is about?
A: Heroes (Spartans) fighting against a special Microsoft's team (Covenants) to stop the developement of Windows ME for year 3000 (if you know Windows ME from 1999/2000 you know what I am talking about)

Q: Is it fun?
A: You kill stuff and a lot of things goes boom and bzaak and puuf....yes is fun!

Q: Any sexy chick in this game?
A: Yes....but with their armour on....PERVERT!

Q: Can I play sat upside down with a beer on my right and a piece of pizza on the floor that I will munch here and there during the gameplay and with a squirrel that will massage my feet?
A: Yes you can thanks to the controller

Q: Is this the usual Halo?
A: No it isn't...is not a story even...well it is....some sort of spin off before Halo 4....but the missions are pretty much linear and you will end in doing the same thing often.

Q: Will you be able to use huge space ships to nuke entire Worlds?
A: NO....SHAME ON YOU MICROSOFT!

Q: Is this better than Cooking Mama?
A: Depends...if you like to boil chickens, grill some hamburgers, cut some sausages and so on...you will probably not like this game.

Q: And what do you think?
A: If you are looking for an Halo game...well this could be actually a good spin off that will add more info about the original story. The game is fun but still it is a bit repetitive. If you like gaming you will end in trying to get all the stuff (medals, achievements, objectives and so on) if you aren't you will get bored a bit easily.

Q: Something missing from this game?
A: Co-op mode....shame for a game like this to not have Co-op for the story

Overall
Graphic 7/10
Sounds 8/10
Gameplay 8/10
Longevity 6/10

Halo Spartan Assault is a isometric top down shooter brought to you by 'Vanguard games', who holds reasonable pedigree, as they made the well received title 'Startling Gears' another top down shooter.
Originally made for Windows Phone, then ported over to Windows 8, then finally to Windows 8, as well as to both generations of Xbox consoles. Basically you'll find this title on virtually any platform you own.

Now onto the game. Is it fun?
Short answer: Yes.
Will it hold your attention however? Probably not.

From the very start, you can tell this is a ported mobile phone almost instantly. Giant menu buttons and a small array of graphical and audio options are not unexpected for these types of game. However it doesn't make it any more excusable.

Controlling your Spartan is easy. WASD keys will move your guy around, while aim and shoot with the mouse. Pretty simple. Everything here feels tight and responsive. Quite an achievement for a top down shooter, where many a time you'll find yourself struggling to control a slow and unresponsive character.
Gameplay wise, this is about as good as you're going to get out of this genre. Good stuff!

Graphically, the game is very pleasing to the eye. It's by no means going to win awards. But it definitely has it's own style and charm to it. Everything here feels like Halo. Plasma grenades explode with a satisfying buzz Halo players will no and love, while the chatter of different weapons all feel hefty and interesting. One of Halo's greatest strengths is it's weapons variety and while it does taught some of the best weapons from the game, I was slightly disappointed they didn't include more weapon variety.
Also, due no doubt to this being originally a Mobile game, some weapons are extraordinarily overpowered (The automatic rocket launcher for example) This completely breaks the tactical nature of the game, and really only limits you to a few weapons which you'll either start with at the beginning of the level, or by unlocking them XP points. None of the guns enemies drop are worth anything. And they'll more than likely get you killed if you attempt to use them on harder difficulties.

This brings me to another strange design choice the game has. Instead of paying for an advantage, on console and desktop versions of the game, you can simply buy OP weapons with XP points you earn by repeating levels. This to me, feels sloppy and hurried. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it would have been cool to have some kind of progression system to unlock more guns. It would have lengthened the games longevity somewhat also.

The story here is about as by the numbers as you'll get. Rookie Spartan Sara Palmer gets into trouble with the covenant. Davis, and her fight back and win the day. Pretty standard stuff. This is by no means going to make you fall in love with the Halo lore if this is your first outing of Halo. Which it very well might be,given MS's track record of releasing Halo games on PC.

One massive, and rather nonsensical issue I have with the game however is that MS has actually made the decision to strip the CO-OP mode out of the game entirely. Unless you own the game on Xbox One, (which I do) you wont be able to play with friends. Aside from the extraordinarily short sighted design decision to rip pieces out of the game so the Next gen port would look more favorable, I can't think of single reason to do this. This severely hurt the games fun factor as two players really makes this one of the best top down shooters out there.

Tl'dr version:

A fun and responsive top down shooter. Bizarre design choices and a weak story does not stop me whole heartedly recommending this game to anyone who likes this kind of thing. If you're a Halo fan you probably already own this. I would however advise buying this on a sale if you can help it as the games replay value is limited.

Now if MS would hurry up and get Halo over here on pc, that would be nice.

I'm a huge fan of Halo series and I was very excited when I heard a new Halo game is coming to PC.
I knew it was a isometric/top down shooter but since I like these kind of games I was fine with it.

The game really feels and looks like Halo even though is not a FPS. It has the same atmosphere and the same graphic and artistic direction, making it a real Halo game.

These being said, the game is actually designed for mobile touch enabled devices and the first thing that gives it away is the missions length that never reaches 10 minutes. In fact, you can finish most of the missions in less than 5 minutes(if you're good enough), making Halo: Spartan Assault the first casual game in this series.

The story is interesting and it's written in such a manner that can justify the moments when the game gets really hard.

The game features and experience system that allows you to buy new weapons and abilities. You can get XP points only based on the enemies you kill and the manner you kill them. This way you can earn the Bronze/Silver/Gold star or none (this means no XP points). You can also select 2 out of 6 skulls to make the game harder but gain more XP points.

The game is really enjoyable but unfortunately it has some serious issues.

There are moments the game feels so scripted and cheap that you really want to ditch it.

The default weapons set usually feels useless so you have to pick your own custom ones. However this requires a lot of XP points and force you to pick up skulls. This makes the game harder but frustrating and cheap.

While the Covenant troops have no problem in controlling the vehicles, you struggle to.
While the need 1-3 grenades to blow up their own vehicles when you are driving them, you need 3-5 at least to do the same thing with the same vehicles. While they can blow up you vehicle really fast with mounted turrets without stopping from shooting, you need more shots and time to do it and you also have to stop firing since the turrets magically start overheating when you use them.
And you also need more grenades to blow up the turrets when the enemy uses it than they need for when you are using it.

All those aspects make some missions so hard that you have to keep on trying to finish them. Sometimes you need to replay old missions to get XP points so that you can afford the right set of weapons and abilities since you waste all those points trying to figure the right set out, making a 5 minutes mission feel like a 30 minutes repetitive hell and a very bad way to make a game feel longer than it really is.

Even so, with all these problems, the game is really enjoyable for a $/€5.
I was however hoping that once you buy the game on Steam, to have it on WP account as well.

I give it a 7.5/10 hoping that Halo: Spartan Strike won't have the same problems.

Originally released for Windows 8 devices, it really was only a matter of time before Halo: Spartan Assault saw a wider release on Xbox consoles and PC. However, as it is not one of the main Halo flagship titles, it was easy to pass over this game without notice. So, in the end, is the game worth tracking down? Well…maybe if you are a hardcore Halo fan who absolutely needs to have something to fill the void until the next game is released.

Halo: Spartan Assault shares only the basic skeleton work with the other titles in the series – for one, this game is a top-down isometric twin-stick shooter. As far as the Halo universe is concerned, this actually makes for a fine fit – it plays very much like a Halo game, but viewed from a distance. The visuals are spot-on for the Halo games as well, as there are several parts in which every visible color in the light spectrum will be present on your screen at the same time. It’s a pretty game, to be sure, and I didn’t feel as if the environments were stale or boring.

Granted, that may have been because the game is very short, and you don’t spend more than five minutes in every level – typically, even less than that. This is the result of being designed as a mobile game, in which you tend to only spend a few minutes on a sporadic schedule to only finish a mission or two. The early missions will fly by and the game does scale up the difficulty with reasonable progression. I did experience a few deaths on the later missions, but that was primarily because of my own fault of trying to rush through a level and not paying attention to my Spartan abilities or avoiding enemy fire. Enemy types aren’t particularly varied throughout, though that is typical for the Halo franchise.

The story is barely serviceable, though hardcore Halo fans will probably want a look. I had to check online to figure out that this title takes place between Halos 3 and 4, when the newest Spartan volunteer program has been implemented and the elite super-soldier unit is growing once again. The missions alternate back and forth between Spartans Palmer and Davis, although there’s no real difference between the two other than a slight visual difference with their armor color and helmets. As it is a side-story, there is very little impact here in the grand scheme of things, and the game is mostly devoid of voice acting or cutscenes – most story information comes from in-game text before every mission, and I had to resist the urge to just skip through the handful of paragraphs that moves the story forward. Also, the game just ends without much fuss, which is disappointing.

It’s a very short, average game, but serviceable for five bucks or less. Not recommended unless you are very much invested in all things Halo – it can be skipped otherwise.

Vehicle controls are crap, AI is mostly useless, vehicles can instantly kill you by simply touching you (not just enemies, friendly vehicles too!). No checkpoints, repetitive missions, short game.

It does however have many sound bites from the Halo games, and is the only Halo game on Steam. Also fairly easy achievements.

tl;dr - Game is for ex-Xbox Halo fans and achievement hunters.

It's definitely not the Halo experience we were expecting for Steam or the PC, but in terms of the game itself, it's not too bad. Think of it as a top-down arcade game from the 80's, combined with the Halo lore. If you're a fan of Halo, you'll like it.

A decent addition to the Halo franchise. I preferred it over Halo Wars, just due to the style of gameplay. I would have liked the addition of co-op to the PC version, unless it's hidden somewhere in the game. The levels are fairly short, with some being considerably more interesting or difficult than others. The challenge system didn't do much for me, and I would have preferred an upgrade system instead (so as not to have to spend experience points). I would have liked to finish the campaign, but I got to a level that I just couldn't beat, and without options to change the difficulty, I gave up.

As the first Halo title to hit PC i was pleased with this game. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is fast paced and Challenging. Spartan Assault has decen replay value with three dificulty Levels and Skull (handicaps). over all I give this game a 7 of 10.

Awesome. Worst thing in it is: some of the levels are quite hard and to make them easier you can buy better weapons and abilities. But, one: they are realy over priced micro transactions and two: you only get them for that level. A bit of a waste. Overall, a great game, totally worth the money. Can't wait till Spartan strike comes out on steam!

Its not the best I've played but it still is worth it if you have five extra dollars.
Would like to see a halo 3-4 ported to PC as long as there aren't hackers every other server like COD.

A surprisingly challenging top down shooter that looks and feels like playing the hlao FPS, with all the frustrations involved with piloting or hijacking vehicles and nade spam. Although the story was very lack luster, it does what it can to tie into Halo 4 universe and potentially humanize Palmer. Sadly, I still hate Palmer's guts.
