EXPENDABROS

August 7th, 2014

Have you heard? We released a completely FREE, standalone Broforce/Expendables spinoff called Expendabros!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX2SNrLsE28

Go get it right now, for free, on Steam!

http://store.steampowered.com/app/312990/

We were approached by Lionsgate a few months ago with the idea of doing a Broforce/Expendables mashup. It's worth mentioning that this was tie-in was unpaid, just a fun collaboration between two like-minded parties. We got to hear Dolph Lundgren say Broforce!! We're sure you guys can understand that it would have been sacrilegious for us NOT to follow up on such a great opportunity. Special thanks to David Edwards from Lionsgate for putting all this into motion and letting us get away with smashing Mel Gibson's face into a bloody pulp.

Due to the work we've been putting in on Expendabros, there will be no Broforce update this month. We hope that you will enjoy playing the Expendabros while we work towards integrating the new content and systems we've created into Broforce. While we won't including the Expendabros characters in the official campaign for Broforce, we will likely re-use some of their mechanics such as Toll Broad's dragon breath shotgun and Broctor Death's badass combat system in future bros.

We also used the Expendabros as an opportunity to experiment with some storytelling techniques, such as the ingame scripted sequences, cutscene images and minigames, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on those. We're also quite excited to see what our players will be able to come up with in custom levels once we release these and other improvements made to the level editor, and as we work towards including Workshop support for Broforce levels. The forest and warehouse/industrial themes will also be making their way to Broforce shortly and will allow us to increase the length of the current Broforce campaign.

P.S. We will be at Gamescom! Come say hi! We have a booth with Devolver and at the Indie Megabooth.

P.P.S you should totally go see the Expendables 3 movie.

DEATH FROM ABOVE UPDATE

July 3rd, 2014

OH HELL YES

Many people have been asking for directional shooting in Broforce. Though we initially assumed it to be an impossible task, our team of brogramming slaves have been working non-stop on this issue for the past month, and have made a breakthrough - DOWNWARDS SHOOTING with our new bro, Cherry Broling!

Though some had reported spotting our next new bro, he since went Missing In Action... But with his passion for democracy that burns brighter than even his beard, he could not be kept at bay for too long. Introducing, COLONEL JAMES BRODDOCK!

Game Audio Legend/God/Superbro amongst bros Joonas Turner has also lent his angelic voice to us in the form of a new announcer and updated voicework for the terrorists.

For those that like lists, here is a list of smaller things that we're including in this update:

  • Made GR-13 jump back correctly
  • Fixed Boondock Bros avatar showing incorrectly for a second
  • F12 now toggles HUD (rather than just hide it)
  • Fixed Windows in City (and elsewhere) breaking after a radio tower start.
  • More Agressive/Less Forgetful Mookopter
  • Fixed Bombardment Flashes getting stuck during Time Bro Motion
  • Improved Camera Trigger Actions
  • Fix Dual Shock 3 controllers crashing on Macs (thanks Unity!)
  • MANY fixes related to Macs and startup
  • Fixed lack of propane momentum when stepping off propane tanks
  • Improved Z ordering of background foliage
  • A lot of work on the announcer voice
  • Made muzzle flashes stick to guns
  • 5% faster mook reaction times
  • Scriptable enemies in Level Editor (WORK IN PROGRESS!)
  • Ellen Ripbro's plasma damages terrain more
  • Broniversal Soldier has a higher rate of fire for his primary weapon
  • Villagers 2.0
  • Bros can stand on mook parachutes.
  • Placing unused terrain pieces in your levels will no longer break the levels
  • Fixed outlines on some parallax pieces

Now, go celebrate your independence by dropping some napalm on Satan! YEAH! Have some friends who still need to be brought around to our democratic ways? Broforce will be 33% off this whole weekend!

The Expendabros - Free Download

The Expendabros have assembled and set their sights on the forces of ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks in the forests of Eastern Europe. Battle through ten full-throttle missions set amongst the picturesque tree tops and the absurdly dangerous lumber mills teeming with enemy soldiers, excessive artillery, and inconveniently placed circular saws. Rescue your brothers in arms and play as seven different legendary soldiers – each with their own unique weapons and special attacks – with up to four players at once in local multiplayer co-op mode.

About the Game

When evil threatens the world, the world calls on Broforce - an under-funded, over-powered paramilitary organization dealing exclusively in excessive force. Brace your loins with up to four players to run ‘n’ gun as dozens of different bros and eliminate the opposing terrorist forces that threaten our way of life. Unleash scores of unique weapons and set off incredible chain reactions of fire, napalm, and limbs in the name of freedom.

  • The Broforce: Deliver your own brand of shock and awe with dozens of bros each with their own unique weaponry and special attacks designed to dispatch freedom across the world.
  • Bro-Op & Deathmatch: Battle terrorism with up to four players in cooperative mode or sever ties with your bros and face each other in several bombastic competitive modes.
  • Explosion Run: Join up with other bros to tackle these unique time attack levels under the pressure of exploding terrains and mass chaos.
  • Fully Destructible Everything: Destructible terrain opens up a slew of strategic options while the abundance of Exploding Red Barrels of Justice™ can literally level the playing field with one shot.
  • Level Editor: Design your own playground of destruction with a robust level editor and become the envy of all the other bros by sharing them online. Browse through scores of custom user created levels and complete them to rate their Bro-ness.

The following features and content are planned in future updates via Early Access. Visit the Steam Community Hub, Broforce Forums, or follow Free Lives (@Free_Lives) on Twitter for news and requests for feedback on future updates.

  • New Bros: Broforce is always looking for a few good bros to join the team. Free Lives will create a plethora of new bros and are always interested in hearing your ideas of powerful heroes that can bare the burden of being a bro.
  • New Missions: New missions will be added to the world map through development and will extend to new environments and locales.
  • Tweaks and Polish: Broforce is pretty rocking now but Free Lives will be iterating, tweaking, and polishing to see what works and what needs more time in the oven. Feedback welcome, bros!
  • Explosions 3.0: What is Broforce without better explosions? Ongoing revisions and additions to the explosions are tantamount to fulfilling Broforce's destiny.
  • Sound Design and Music: Continuing work to revise and add new music and sound design to celebrate freedom in your ears.

Early Access Review
Broforce was my first impulse purchase when I got into PC gaming last summer and I don't regret it at all.
---
Broforce is not the most sophisticated game. A story is non-existent and there's not much motivation beyond rescue the hostages and kill the bad guys. But that's not much of a negative at all, because the gameplay blows away any wishes for a story or deeper motives. Broforce set out to be an ode to 80's and 90's action movies, the Expendables in video game form, and it succeeds on every possible level.

The biggest selling point is the characters, all pixel-art parodies of 80's and 90's action movie heroes. Rambo, Commando, Walker Texas Ranger, Snake Plissken, John McClane, The Terminator, Judge Dredd, and more are available to play as and each with their own unique weapon and secondary explosive. You start each level off as a random hero and can switch to another by rescuing hostages, similar to the weapon swapping mechanic in Super Crate Box.

Each level is a fully destructible playground filled with explosive barrels, propane canisters, and many many enemies ranging from simple goons to suicide bombers to guard dogs and mini-gun wielding mini-bosses. The stylized graphics are nicely detailed, with blood, dirt, smoke, and fire flying with every explosion. The destructible environments adds an layer of depth, allowing you to tunnel beneath enemies to flank them or collapse the ground under their feet or crush them beneath trucks and heavy debris. All those tricks and fast reflexes will be needed because the game is not easy. You die in one hit.
---
Those impressions are months old, but remain as true as ever. Broforce is hard, it's chaotic, it's challenging, it's fun as hell. You feel like a badass, but you also havve to plan your attack because you can die so fast. A lot of times, rushing in will get you killed, while it would be better to flank from above or blow the ground away from below.

Since I wrote that, new heroes have been added, from Neo to Machete. New bosses and challenging new enemies and mini-bosses to fight. New levels and mechanics. The editor has been improved and expanded. Unlike the majority of betas, this feels like a finished games that gets big content updates rather than a skeleton of a game missing critical features like some Early Access games.

So the bottom line: Broforce is a mother♥♥♥♥ing blast and you should play it if you like fast arcade action with highly destructive environments and the chance to play as your favorite action heroes.

*Edited to make it more helpful*

I've had this game 10 minutes. Why have I only had this game 10 minutes?

This is incredibly, incredibly good. The first Early Access game I've bought and not regretted.

I agree with the comparisons to Contra and Metal Slug. As frantic as Pineapple Smash Crew and just as explody, Zaney and Gory like Metal Slug and Contra respectively.

For such an early version, there's a good deal of content (2 hours for the 'campaign') and plenty of interesting characters to play as.

Replaying with the unlocked characters and trying new and interesting ways to mush enemies is really, really fun.

Oh, and you get to play as Judge Dredd.

Normally, I'd write a long review about why I like and/or dislike a game. This time, I'm doing it differently.

This game is.. YES. SO MUCH YES.

The gameplay is fun 2D shoot em' up crazy, with awesome characters. What it lacks in story it makes up for in awesome gameplay and characters.

The pixel style graphics look great, and it blends in so well. The Multiplayer is fun, too, I definentally recommend playing this with a friend.

9/10 I want to see where this goes.

UPON LAUNCHING THIS GAME, MY COLD RED COMMUNIST HEART WAS IMMEDIATELY ASSUALTED WITH COPIOUS LEVELS OF FREEDOM. AFTER PLAYING THE GAME, I HAD TO SPEND SEVERAL HOURS READING MARXIST PROPAGANDA AND SPREADING IDEAS OF FREE HEALTHCARE TO AVOID BEING LURED BY THE SIREN CALL OF BASEBALL, APPLE PIE AND DEEPFRIED BUTTER ON A STICK, A FEW OF THE MANY TOOLS THE CAPITALIST MONSTER HAS AT ITS DISPOSAL. DO NOT RECCOMEND.
