About This Game

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is the brutal conclusion to the Hotline Miami saga, set against a backdrop of escalating violence and retribution over spilled blood in the original game. Follow the paths of several distinct factions – each with their own questionable methods and uncertain motivations – as unforeseen consequences intersect and reality once again slips back into a brilliant haze of neon and bloodshed.

Blistering combat against punishing opposition will require intense focus as new variables, weapons, and methods of execution are introduced throughout the struggle. Let the striking colors of an unmistakable visual style wash over as you meticulously cut down those that would stand between you and the ultimate meaning behind the massacre. This is the finale, this is the unquestionable end.

Relentless Hostilities: Adjust combat techniques as the narrative shifts between factions and brings unique variations to a familiar approach along with new weapons, movements, and melee attacks.

Enthralling Soundtrack: Over forty pounding tracks from dozens of artists punctuate the savage conflict and bring the larger scale of your actions into focus. New artists join returning favorites like M|O|O|N, Perturbator, Jasper Byrne, Scattle, and El Huervo for an incredible audio massacre.

Custom Level Editor: Design custom levels using characters, enemies, weapons and music tracks from the game and share your creations with others online via Steam Workshop. [COMING SOON]

I picked up Hotline Miami 2 about a day after playing Hotline Miami 1, both for the extra Payday 2 content, but also because, in only two hour's worth of gameplay, the first game made my top 10 games list. However, I'm sorry to say that Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number cannot join the first game on that list.

First and foremost was the gameplay. While it was still very much similar to HLM 1, the game's combat is far more unfair. Where HLM 1 had tightly-designed rooms and combat that was incredibly difficult, but still gave you a sense of being able to complete it, HLM 2's combat seems to be intentionally dicking you. Particularly, the AI. Every single enemy with a firearm seems to have been trained to have a reaction time equivalent to that of a rattlesnake hopped up on crack, and an accuracy rivaling that of a hawk with a sniper rifle, even when you're three windows away. While, in fairness, they did compensate for this by allowing your character to soak up a couple of bullets by default, it rarely makes a difference, especially when your enemies are sniping you with shotguns.

I'll separately devote sections to both the story and the characters, as I've got much to say individually about both.

When it comes to characters, Dennaton exceeds, able to separate the characters from one-another personality-wise very easily. However, it seems with all these characters, both PC and NPC, they couldn't find the time or budget to give them an actual arc, and it all ends with an unsatisfactory conclusion that is, without fail, incredibly abrupt and confusing. If they'd narrowed their focus to just one or two of the characters--any of them--then they would have been able to immensely improve the story they'd written.

As for the aforementioned story, it tries hard to do too much with too little, and ultimately ends in an incredibly cop-out and, quite frankly, bad one-off wrap-up, which comes just as abruptly as the ends of the character arcs. When I got to this ending, I thought it should have ended some hours ago, at the end of the arc for the Fans, and yet it kept up for another two or so hours, throwing needless exposition at us in an attempt to mercilessly pad out the gameplay. While I won't spoil the ending, I will say that it was incredibly poorly-executed, and that it made null everything you'd been doing for the past four or five hours.

All in all, while the gameplay is still somewhat reminiscent of Hotline Miami 1, there is no way it could come anywhere near to its predecessor. Therefore, I sadly cannot reccommend this game.

OK, let's start with the positive things.
The style of the game is very well executed. The beautifully gory pixelart, the awesome synthwave soundtrack, the old school VHS filters and effects, it just fits together and creates a very emersing experience. Every kill feels satisfying, all weapons and even the normal punches have this certain oohmpf behind them. Even though I don't really like frustratingly difficult games, this one got me hooked all the way through. The story is a bit confusing though because it's told completely out of order.
Now to the cons:
The doors man... just keep your distance from them. Enemy's get instantly knocked out, even if you're just standing there in the doorframe and they're trying to run towards you. As good as it's sounds it can be really annoying. When you break into a room and accidentally knock out a thug you now have to worry about that this guy is going to jump up at any moment and kill you while you're busy with the other ones.
Besides some minor glitches that happen here and there everything works pretty smoothly. The hitbox for the knocked out enemys is a bit confusing. I often found myself furiously jerking off the space bar trying to kill a knocked out opponent.
Some leveldesigns are just meant to make you throw your chair across the room. In those situations you're mostly relying on enemy's to spawn with a certain gun or go the ideal path rather than on your skill.

In the end it still was a very satisfying experience though and I definitely recommend to give it a shot if you're interested in a very intense, gory, 80s-mixed-with-pixelart style top down shooter.

Hotline Miami 2 is mostly more of the same, but that's far from a bad thing. The cast is bigger, the game is longer, there's more story, and there's definitely more difficultly. While I understand that Hotline Miami isn't supposed to be easy, I did find some levels excessive in length, as you can't save mid-chapter and pick up later. Want to take a long break in a frustrating chapter? Be prepared to play the whole thing again. The levels themselves are very open, meaning you can frequently get killed by off-screen enemies and baiting will be a vital strategy to the point of repetition. As far as complaints go, that's all I have.

Hotline Miami 2 brings the story full circle, answering questions left unanswered in the first game. As for the new plots, Detective Pardo and Eric the journalist's stories shine. There's a moral to this whole series too, and it's one Metal Gear fans will find familiar.

The gameplay is as brutal as before. There's still nothing quite like blasting, slashing, and bludgeoning your way through a level with the infamous soundtrack pulsing in your ears.

Do I think this game is as good as Hotline Miami 2? Not quite. It's still certainly worth playing if you can make it through some frustration.

Too many guns. You'll spend half your time playing this game getting shot by someone from off-screen, or on the very edge of your screen. I loved HM1, can't stand to play 2 for more than a few minutes at a time because of the insane number of long halls with guns in them.

Do not mourn, my mother, dear
Every pang will Soon be over
For I hear the angel band
Calling from their Starry Shore
Now I See their banners wave
In the light of perfect day
though it's hard to part with you
Yet I would not wish to Stay

For the dear old Flag I die
Mother? dry your weeping eye
For the honor of our land
And the dear old Flag I die

Farewell mother, Death's cold hand
Weighs upon my Spirit now
And I fell his blighting breath
Fan my pallid cheek and brow
Closer, closer to your heart
Let me feel that you are by
While my sight is growing dim
For the dear old flag I die

For the dear old flag I die
Mother, dry your weeping eye
For the honor of our land
And the dear old flag I die

I've played way too much of this game. Most of which has been spent in the level editor, but I have yet to make a campaign I'm proud enough of to publish, but when the time comes... So, I love this game. Maybe it's my obsession with Tarantino, but the whole "telling a story out of order" thing appeals to me a lot. It was a little weird at first having this game take place before/during/after the first Hotline Miami Game. I'll give a quick rundown of all the characters, with as little spoilers as possible.

First character you meet is the Pig Butcher: He only has one actual level and takes the spot of the game tutorial, but his level is really interesting. He blurs the lines between what's a movie (not a spoiler, you learn his parts are a movie in the tutorial) and what isn't. He's a great character.

Next is Corey: She is one of four (or five) fans. They're all nutjobs who practically worship Jacket (from the first game) and take out a bunch of kids just because they're in gangs, (they don't know Jacket's motivations and about the phone calls). She has a USELESS roll dodge, meaning that when you press space, she does a stupid ♥♥♥♥ing roll on the ground. It's not as bad as I make it out to be, but it is pretty useless in my eyes. When rolling, she's impervious to bullets. But when she gets back up, she usually get's shot, which is why she's only really good for rolling across distances. She wears a zebra mask, and a Miami Dolphins jacket.

Next is our good, handsome friend Manny Pardo (that's my profile picture): He's a dirty cop who get's his sick kicks out of killing a bunch of kids just because they're in gangs. He uses his powerful badge to murder and get away with it. The people he murders aren't innocent but he doesn't let anyone find out.

Next is Evan Wright, the writer: He is a writer. His motives are to write a book about Jacket, leading him to some crazy places. He "fights" his way through a mafia building to interview the leader of the gang, named Petrov. Evan is friends with Manny, and Manny owes him a lot for something that happened in their past. It isn't made entirely clear what that is exactly, but you get a pretty good idea towards the end of the game. Also, Evan doesn't kill anybody, he just knocks them out, leading to some pretty sweet takedowns. He doesn't use guns or knives, and he can take the magazines out of guns to disarm them. You actually CAN kill people with Evan, but it takes a little while. After two kills, he goes ♥♥♥♥ing berzerk, and you won't like him when he's angry. Mainly because he throws off his jacket and you get to see his glimmering biceps. No homo.

After Evan is Tony: He uses the familiar and sexy killing punches from the first game with the Tony mask, but this time with a twist. He can't use weapons. At all. All he has are his fists. He wears a black shirt and they Tony mask from the first game, but it's weird and bloody. It's never actually stated how he gets it, but it looks cool, nonetheless. And he's also another fan of Jacket. He, Corey and the three other fans hang out in a cool bar place.

After him is the Henchman: He works for the new boss of the Russian mafia, who I'll get into later. He wears the classic white jacket with a blue shirt, and has a silenced pistol. I hate his level, it's really annoying and there's too much open space, leading to a lot of cheap kills.

Next is Alex & Ash: That's right, two people for the price of one! Why? Because you get to play as both of them at the same time. They're both twin brother and sister. Alex, the girl has a chainsaw and Ash, the guy has a pistol, or whatever gun you find on the ground. Left click to use the chainsaw, right click to shoot the gun. Ash follows Alex. They're both two of the last fans. They hang out with Corey and Mark at the bar. They both wear matching swan masks with a 1 and a 2 on them so you can tell them apart when they talk. They also wear football pads, and Alex uses a backpack. Playing as them is action packed and awesome.

Next is The Soldier, Nicke, Beard or whatever the hell you want to call him, he goes by a few names: He's a... familiar face from the first game, and you get to fight Communists in the Russian-American "Cold War" in 1985. His levels explain a lot of questions you might've had about the mysterious cashier in Hotline Miami 1. His levels aren't my cup of tea, a lot of them are too open and lead to cheap deaths. Cool character, but his levels often have bad design. ESPECIALLY THE LAST ONE!!!! But I digress.

After him is the final fan, Mark: Not much to him, he wears a bear mask and starts out with two ♥♥♥♥ing machine guns in each of his hands. If you right click, he'll extend his arms out, firing on either side of him. He's the third and final fat character you get to play as in the game, next to Jake and the Pig Butcher. His machine guns have 128 bullets in them total, and you get to shoot up any sewers you visit. He likes pizza.

The next character (almost done) is Richter: I really can't say much about him without spoiling, but he's that rat fink ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who shot you in Hotline Miami 1 and led to THE WORST ♥♥♥♥ING LEVEL IN THE ENTIRE SERIES ♥♥♥♥ YOU TRAUMA YOU PIECE OF ♥♥♥♥ I WILL END YOU, YOU HAVE STOPPED SO MANY OF MY NO DEATH RUNS I WILL FFFFFFFF♥♥♥♥ING END YOU. Anyway, his levels are nice and are a nice throwback to HM1. He also works for 50 Blessings and lives with his mother.

The final character is the Son: He's the Son of the mob boss in HM1 that shoots himself at the end of the game. His motivations are to rebuild the mafia, without Jacket interfering (cuz he's in jail), and he does a pretty damn good job doing it. His levels are fun, but hard. He hates Columbians. He has a choice of three different playstyles, but I won't say what they are (*wink* *wink*).

So that's it for the rundown of all the characters. I hope this has made you consider buying it. I honsestly prefer this game over the first one, but if you don't like it as much, that makes sense, too. You'll notice that I complained a lot about levels that are too open, and there are a little bit of them. If you won't let that turn you off of an otherwise great game and can spare the money, I reccomend this game is for you. And since Dennaton isn't going to make a Hotline Miami 3, why not make it yourself with the level editor? It's ♥♥♥♥ing great and you can fix any of the problems you had. Hope this helped!

Jesus Christ, my fingers are tired.

One step forward, two steps back. The title for the game should be “Hotline Miami 2: Lure”, because for 80% of the game that’s what the game forces you to do, lure enemies towards a door or around a corner by playing peek-a-boo and then shoot or melee attack them until they are all dead, repeat ad infinitum.

This is what happens when you build the level design around the story and not the gameplay, I can’t believe the developers didn’t playtest this before it was released and see the problems. The main issue is that they made the levels and hallways so huge and long that you can’t see to the end of the area, so you have no idea where anyone is, and will inevitably be killed by a bullet coming from a guy off screen. The game forces you to lure and blind fire at unseen enemies. Nearly every level in the game is like this! In the first game you could see where everyone was and could choose and adjust your playstyle accordingly.

They also seem to have limited the number of masks you can wear and are again forced to complete levels a certain way based on the character you happen to be playing as at that moment. The story has a shifting narrative structure which is told out of sequence, so one level you will play as a reporter who can’t kill anyone, and are forced to melee enemies. Another level might have you play as two characters at the same time, who wield a chainsaw and dual pistols (for some characters, once they run out of ammo you’re boned, you can’t pick up enemy weapons!, and are forced to melee attack).

Were all of these changes to the game design worth it for the sake of the story? In a word……NO, I admit as a film it would be interesting to watch, but with the top down pixel art graphics, following 10 different characters and stories makes it confusing and hard to follow and remember who is who, and the fact it keeps going backwards and forward in time makes it even more needlessly confusing.

They did add a few new enemy types, there’s one type who ducks when you shoot and you are forced to use a melee weapon to take him out. Another type charges at you, and can only be killed by chucking a weapon at his face and then performing a finishing move on him while he’s on the ground stunned. To be honest I found those new enemy types annoying and took away some of the enjoyment from my run and gun playstyle.

The one thing they got right was the music, which is at least as good as the first game if not better, so you have some decent tunes to listen to, while you lure all the enemies to your position.

Overall a disappointing effort, I would still recommend it to fans of the first Hotline Miami. There are very few games that play like and do what Hotline Miami does, so I give it a low pass for that mainly. There are fun moments but if you haven’t played either game yet then get the first one.

I didn't bother about dying in this game.
I was so overwhelmed by the music that was giving you a rush that makes you feel like a bloodthirsty maniac.
In each level, you build a relationship to the enemies that kill you.
(no spoilers) the last level is probably the hardest. a mobster with a shotgun is always harrassing me by killing me every time it goes well... and then you find a way to easily kill him; "finally I can resume my killing spree, now that this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is gone."
the Story is ♥♥♥♥in' great. the tainted atmosphere is taking you really deep into the game. (only if you enjoy the game).
It has been a long time since I played a game this good. It took me 16+ hours to complete the game.
the thing that keeps you going even after you die more than 1000 times, is the feeling you have.
it is hard to explain, but once you play it you will notice it.
level editor is sick.

Story : extremely good.

Soundtrack : https://soundcloud.com/squidward-4/iamthekidyouknowwhatimean-run

Scenery : 80's.

Fictions : this is some ♥♥♥♥ that would happen in real life.

i love hotline maimi. hotline maimi 2 however the developers have completly missed the mark on. rather than give a long winded explanation of all the magic they abandoned and replaced with garbage, ill leave it at saying 99% of your deaths will be you getting gunned down in one of the near infinite large open rooms by someone waaaay outside of your field of view. this game is enormously dissapointing. and the first i think i've gone out of my way to warn people about
