About This Game

You're going down... again.

If you thought Descent™ went to the edge of 360° 3D power-blasting sensory insanity, then prepare yourself. You're about to plunge over the edge, and into the depths of Descent II™.

But this time, you're not alone.

Joining you on your deadly new assignment is your loyal Guide-bot. This faithful companion rushes with you through the twists and turns of the menacing darkness, often scouting ahead to hunt down the orbs, powerups and tools you desperately need to complete your job. I was extremely looking forward to playing this re-release. Hoever, it isn't a re-release. It's a completely unupdated and clunky direct port of the old game. This means you will very quickly find the game unplayable, under-responsive, and with impossible to utilize controls. You WILL need to mod this game to make it work, and that means having to play the game as if it were a non-Steam game anyway. At that point, you might as well buy it somewhere else like GOG. If you do happen to get this, though, I recommend installing D2X-Rebirth as soon as possible.

The game itself? Incredible, a classic of 3D first person shooters. Satisfying, even if its graphics may be a bit dated. And it is quite a challenge too. If you're not after rough flying and can't deal with poor textures, Descent 3 may not be the worst thing to look at.

But I can't recommend it as packaged here on Steam. Please do yourself a favor and check alternate sources first.

Soundtrack is great, played this game back when I was 4 years old on an old Compaq Windows 95.

Buy it.

Descent 2. Where to begin. In my humble opinion, it is the greatest shooter of all time. The story is eerie and compelling, the enemies intelligent and cunning, the gameplay thrilling and dynamic. Each world feels totally different than the last, with twisting labyrinths full of enemies, power-ups, hostages, secret passages, complex door/forcefield/wall locking/unlocking systems, incredibly fun boss battles, and the infamous guidebot. With six degrees of freedom, barrel rolls, afterburner, and brakes, the skill cap of Descent 2 is sky-high. There's a certain complexity to movement and dodging that only flight games seem to require.

On top of that, this isn't an open sky game like War Thunder, there's plenty of barriers to hide behind, doors you can ope n/close and traps you can set for enemies to run into. You can trick the enemies into hurting each other, combine different tactics such as activating a forcefield and using it as a barrier with guided missiles, you can even use robots as robo-shields to protect yourself against its comrades' attacks. By having elements of flight combat sims and traditional fast-paced shooters, Descent 2 is one of the most challenging, exciting games out there. The modern competitive scene is extremely skilled and you have to have reflexes as sharp as a fighter pilot to succeed.

The art, animation, and robot design is beautiful and intriguing. The variety of robots you face have a wide plethora of behaviors, acting individually, sometimes as a swarm, and sneaking up on you with near-human level combat comprehension. While this game may be very old, there are plenty of mods available that create taxing high-def textures and very realistic particle animations. Your $1000 graphics card won't be able to keep up when fully modded.

An enormous single player campaign, limitless potential with multiplayer, an active competitive scene, incredibly beautiful mods, and the most innovative FPS gameplay ever, makes Descent 2 a game worth far far more than a traditional $40 or $60. Oh wait, it's only $5? ONLY $5?!? If you don't buy this, you're a complete fool missing out on PC gaming's pinnacle game. 5000/10 is my rating for Descent 2.

Somethings to note about Descent 2
It's NOT actually a FPS. It's Space combat simulator. Though it does contain A LOT of shooting.

And if you
-are easily frightened
-Get nauseous very quickly
-Can't stand a lot of light at once
Then I don't recommend this game to you.

Positives
-Great Atmosphere (Even though it's early polygon. I got sucked right in.)
-The enemy designs are Awesome and terrifying
-The AI is ...Smart.
-The Guide bot is REALLY useful
-Weapon selection is Fantasic
-Levels, though bland in the visual sense, are fun to play through
-6 axis combat is thrilling.
-Multi-player is an absolute BLAST!

Neagatives
-Controls are...Not bad...Kind of. (It's hard to explain unless you play it.)
-Music...I'd rather have it off. Half of the game is played with your ears. Each enemy has their own sound, but the music can drown that out at points.
-Levels can drag on for too long, not all, but a good amount.

Honestly I can't recommend this game enough. Give it a try.

Ok, first off, you don't have to run the game through DOS Box - DX Rebirth is a much better port and works well with STEAM - read the forum post on Widescreen Support for more info.
What is there to be said about the game - it is a classic, the gameplay is frenetic, it really tests your reflexes and the enemies just keep on coming :)
Back in the day I had hours and hours of fun with Descent and Descent 2, then lost the discs and have been wanting to play this ever since. Played it again last night for just a few minutes and was hooked all over again ...
Only gripe is the price - it should have been offered for 50% off just like Descent, other than that, I have no complaints :)
