This is a great program. You need a good handle on PBR (Physically Based Rendering) and normal mapping before you start messing with it though. The tutorial are nice, if you follow along with the models that they are doing. Try loading in your own .fbx or .obj without a normal map and it's a different story to follow along with. I wish that I could just import Photoshop brushes without having to save them as something other than .abr that would be great. Some type of plugin with Maya would be great too.

Well, well worth the money. It now surpasses many other 3D painting tools. The UI can take a little getting use to. But it's full intigration with UE4, Blender (soon), and Maya make up for it. Seriously if your thinking about buying it, BUY IT.

The workflow when using Substance Painter is very easy to get into when one is in the texturing/painting phase of a model, the basic controls are pretty easy to learn, however it can be awkward at first if one has been working in blender for it's texture painting tools. Substance Painter is also a much cheaper alternative to MARI and is definately best suited for freelancers, hobbyists, and game developers & modders.

The import process is very easy, but i reconmend watching the importing video on the website for better understanding of what can be done!

PROS:
+ Tons of Customization for all of your texturing needs!
+ Will run on pretty much anything that is 64bit and not using integrated graphics!
+ GPU simulation for various effects!
+ Pretty stable, very few crashes in my experience!
+ Achivements! (Because why not!)
+ Layers!
+ Friendly steam community when you need help!

CONS:
- Can be tedious to learn at first
- GPU simulation will murder your system if using lack-luster hardware (mid/low end gaming cards)

BEAR IN MIND: THIS IS THE INDIE LICENSE VERSION, SO COMMERICAL USE OF SUBSTANCE PAINTER (INDIE) CAN ONLY BE USED IF YOUR COMPANY/ENTITY MAKES LESS THAN $10K USD A YEAR IN REVENUE.

OTHERWISE, YOU ARE GOOD TO GO!

if you need the pro license which has no fiscal limit, an upgrade to pro is available at their website; a one-time fee of 491 USD.

I haven't had the time to properly sit down with it to fully understand it all, but from the time I've spent in it I've found it to be very intuitive and has been able to work with it pretty well.
I got some issues with the UV maps on one mesh, but that might have just been me messing something up in the transfer.
Well made software! definitely a recommend

If you have not gotten it yet, I suggest you do it, imported my maya files just fine, multiple objects, multiple uv sets, Multiple materials just fine. All I can say is wow, this is going to take a ton of time off from my texturing work with just playing with it the past hour. Definatly a tool worth having in your tool box.

I would give my life for this program. I litterally have no other ambition more than making beautiful #(* to send over to this program. I often waste hours enamoured over my own work and often with the viewport looked worse so I'd be able to get back to work. The particle brushes are a welcome addition and also are the grand work of wizards. I dont know what they're gonna do next but my heart cant take much more of it. I never said this about a software company *sniff* but I love these guys. God bless Wes McDermott.

Well worth the money, if you have any doubts, I suggest heading over to the website and spending a few hours on the trial version, I spent 9 hours straight on this program playing with the tools and have created a master peice for my 3D model.

One of the best parts is, is it will merge the generated normals and diffuse textures together with your original maps nicely in the end result.

The indie liscense agreement is brilliant and usually by the time you've begun generating $10KUSD per year you'll more than likely be able to afford the commerical version, the comerical version is discounted by $150 if you already own the indie version.

10/10

There are however some brick walls you may encounter along the way, if you're reading this then I shall explain how to do some things alot of you will more than likely want to do;

Applying a pre-made diffuse (something you've already created to be edited) Head to layers and create a new fill layer, put it on the bottom then go to file>Import images>import your diffuse, the diffuse should show up in the decals tab, drag and drop that on the bar that holds the 'color changer' and it will be applied.

With the normal maps, it gives you an option when you load a custom model to add pre-made images, in this section you would've added your normal map, if you have done this then on the left hand side there's a window with undo history and material information, scroll down to Additional Maps and click on normal map and apply your normal map.

Turning off seamless texturing; while you have your brush selected go to the right hand panel that holds that information, click on the stroke and the advanced options will show, set the alignment to 'UV' to stop the annoying bleeding, this is good for painting only on the 2d view.

As of current, as far as my knowledge goes, you can't turn off the gloss/specular in the 3d viewport, there /might/ be and option somewhere though, there isn't a whole lot of documentation on Painter and the official tutorials are out of date.

I suggest you copy and paste this info somewhere, it may be useful to you because it took me a little while to figure it out and find the info on it.

Particle painting and PBR materials are just some of the surprising and innvoative features Substance Painter comes with. It's on the right track to become an awesome program, if you purchase it now in early access state you can suggest new features and help the developers to make a better package, so if you are interested in 3D painting or texturing for game development in general you should try the demo and then purchase it if you like it.

Substance Painter makes texturing feel like a joy, and has the potential to replace photoshop in my workflow. Combined with Substance Designer for creating base textures, or brush alphas makes this truly shine as a must-have application.

Substance Painter is absolutely a new way to work. Multi-channel brushes combined with a PBR viewport are excellent; and of course painting in 3d means you can texture seamlessly. Particles are also impressive and make excellent masks for fill layers. There is still room for their settings to be expanded; which I believe is already in the works. The UI is, in my opinion, well designed, customisable, and still being tweaked based on beta feedback.

Currently without the 2d viewport I feel that Substance Painter Beta will be loved more by character artists and those working on organic models, while hard-surface artists may still require a few simple things to be done in photoshop. Since there is a free trial however, there is no reason not to see how SP fits into your workflow.

Brought my texturing from a 1.5/10 to a 7/10. Easily worth the 100 bucks I dropped on it.

Saves so much time, too.

Great bit of software, couple of issues probably due to me not knowing, unable to load a stencil, the only thing it paints when clicking on the stecil tool is materials and im not sure how to create materials,
this tool has great potential i thought the particle painting was a bit of a gimmick when i first saw it but no way this is great and an amazing new way of texturing my models especially weathering.
id like to see some masking properties from zbrush implemented so i can particle texture the very deep parts of my model, probably using an occlusion map would be cool.
i think ive invested my money bery wislely in this product and thanks substance, forget 3dcoat forget marmoset this is an all in one toolbag for me

I find it interesting that the #1 global achievement (almost 30% of all users) is sending a crash report. Yet, only 2% have launched the app more than 50 times.

I've only used this app a couple of times myself. So far, I like it. PBR looks great. Easy to pick up. There's a bit of a learning curve to get anything really good. Seriously, 3D Coat, Mudbox and Z-Brush don't seem to have PBR. Bravo to Substance Painter for being on the cutting edge! Why the hell am I spending so much on programs like 3DS Max and Mudbox?

Absolutely fantastic for quick material generation and detail work.
Allegorithmic is still working on giving users more power over the particle brushes and improved interoperability with Designer, and once those features are fully functional it will make an already peerless texturing tool perfect.
