Beta 11 and Release date!

September 4

Substance Painter Beta 11 is out! We are nearing the end of this adventure (and the start of a new one) and are ready to make a long-awaited announcement: Substance Painter 1.0 is being wrapped up and will be released on October 15th, with some milestone new features :)

Here are the changes and addition to the latest build:

  • Added: Add a splitter between the 3D and 2D views
  • Added: Use a gradient background in the 2D/3D views
  • Added: Interface for the Levels histogram
  • Added: Merge shelf and library
  • Added: No save action required when creating or updating a preset
  • Added: Import assets in the shelf through Drag and Drop
  • Fixed: The name of buttons is displayed over in the main toolbar

Substance Painter is a brand new 3D&2D Painting app featuring never before seen features and workflow improvements to make the creation of textures for modern games easier than ever.

At Allegorithmic, we have a long history of working very closely with our customers, from the small independents to the largest AAA studios. Today we want you to help us design the ultimate painting tool and bring innovation and state of the art technology to every artist out there at a fair price.

This Beta version will give you access to the Indie license once it is released. As with our other tools, the non-commercial license allows you to create and sell assets on the Workshop for any Steam game!

If you purchase this product on Steam, you will as well get a licence on our website to use Substance Painter in standalone :)


IMPORTANT UPDATE: We authorize the use of the Indie version of Substance Painter to any indie / company generating less than US$10K a year in revenue (based on prior fiscal year). If you are above this limit you should purchase/upgrade to the Pro version on the Allegorithmic website.

I would give my life for this program. I litterally have no other ambition more than making beautiful #(* to send over to this program. I often waste hours enamoured over my own work and often with the viewport looked worse so I'd be able to get back to work. The particle brushes are a welcome addition and also are the grand work of wizards. I dont know what they're gonna do next but my heart cant take much more of it. I never said this about a software company *sniff* but I love these guys. God bless Wes McDermott.

Even at this early state, I would say this is probably the most useful and intuitive of the texture painting apps. I've tried quite a few and had trouble getting good results, but with Painter I am able to get really good results. Especially combined with Designer.

This software is awesome!!! This is what next gen workflow should be like. Making painting your models sooo much easier. So much more fun. The particle brushes are icing on the cake. For example, say you want rust on your mech; well how does rust get on metal objects??? Use the rain brush and find out :D. it has normal map brushes and check this out. If say you add scales like a lizard as a bump map. The particle paint brushes react to that bump map :D. Thats awesome!!! The lighting system is awesome. The user interface is awesome and very easy to get used to and very customizable to your liking. You can change heights of your UV maps for more or less detail. Their is a layer system much like photoshop or illustrator or any other painting program (except this is for 3d models). Their aren't very many brushes to use though. But it does use alpha brushes like many 3D sculpting softwares and I'm sure they'll add more in the final product. All in all I give this product a 10/10 a must buy for anyone making 3D models for animations, movies, or just for fun.

I find it interesting that the #1 global achievement (almost 30% of all users) is sending a crash report. Yet, only 2% have launched the app more than 50 times.

I've only used this app a couple of times myself. So far, I like it. PBR looks great. Easy to pick up. There's a bit of a learning curve to get anything really good. Seriously, 3D Coat, Mudbox and Z-Brush don't seem to have PBR. Bravo to Substance Painter for being on the cutting edge! Why the hell am I spending so much on programs like 3DS Max and Mudbox?

Particle painting and PBR materials are just some of the surprising and innvoative features Substance Painter comes with. It's on the right track to become an awesome program, if you purchase it now in early access state you can suggest new features and help the developers to make a better package, so if you are interested in 3D painting or texturing for game development in general you should try the demo and then purchase it if you like it.
