Despre acest conținut

Whistleblower will let you play as Waylon Park, a software engineer under contract with Murkoff and the man who emailed journalists around the world - including Miles - at the beginning of Outlast. Spending a couple of weeks at Mount Massive, during which he was unable to even talk to his wife and son thanks to strict security protocols, Waylon developed a deep-seated distrust of the profit-motivated scientists and doctors leading dangerous and irresponsible experiments on their patients. Identifying with those poor souls fueled Waylon's anger, and set the stage for his unmasking of Mount Massive's rotten core.

Although Whistleblower tells the story that led to Outlast, it will actually stretch past the events of the first game to show the final chapter in Mount Massive Asylum's story.

Whistleblower is the DLC expansion for the Outlast game. The story of Whistleblower is interesting because it intertwines with the story and the events of the main Outlast game. It begins as kind of a prequel because it starts before the beginning of the main Outlast game. But by the end of Whistleblower, it pretty much wraps up everything with regards to the main Outlast game. Whistleblower continues the Outlast experience by continuing to take the player through creepy environments that contain some of the most disgusting and demented things that you’ll ever see in any horror game ever. And, like the main Outlast game, the characters that you come across in Whistleblower were done really well and they really make you believe that these are truly insane and psychotic people. However, Whistleblower has a significant flaw that the main Outlast game also has that I want to mention. The chase sequences in Whistleblower can be really frustrating for new players and beginners because it can be really hard trying to figure out exactly where you’re supposed to go to survive. You might end up just running around in circles or just running all over the place over and over and over again, desperately trying to figure out where you’re supposed to go. Getting killed over and over again during a chase sequence because you still haven’t figured out where you’re supposed to go gets really frustrating and annoying. That’s the significant flaw. It’s not a deal breaker to me though. If you played through and liked the main Outlast game (like I did), then it’s definitely worth it to play through and experience Outlast’s Whistleblower DLC expansion

Pros
  • The ambience, the atmosphere and the environment
  • New environments
  • Pretty much every character you encounter looks and feels great
  • The scare jumps
  • One amazing antagonist
  • Great complement to the plot
Cons
  • Can't really find any cons, I really loved this DLC

Graphics
  • The game's world is really well crafted. Everything fits it's environment and it creates a really amazing atmosphere
  • The characters look really great. Amazing design choices
Gameplay
  • Not much to say here. The gameplay is very, very simplistic. You're not able to attack so everything you do is walk, run, crouch, press buttons and hide from possible threats. Simple and efficient
  • I love the fact that the game auto saves every so often and not only when you're nearby heavy intense sections of the game. This made a huge difference, since on most games, the game auto saves right before a boss or right before an important section of the game. This way you could never guess stuff
Audio
  • Now this takes the cake. The audio was king! Trully amazing use of sounds to set up pretty much the whole game. MVP

Final Thoughts
Alright, so I really love horror games, being my favourite ones Silent Hill 2 and 3. I really love that series because it's such an amazing way of how they set up the game with psychological terror instead or half ♥♥♥♥♥ scare jumps. To wrap it up really fast and not lose more time with Silent Hill, I love how they make you afraid of what you can't see, messing with your head with little details and sounds, so I kinda dislike horror games that just use and abuse scare jumps because it really is the easy way to make someone scared...
With this said, Outlast is one of those games that use scare jumps but these are so amazingly crafted that I can't even be mad. Almost every scare jump is set up brilliantly that it almost looks like art. This is scare jumps well made!
As I already said, the sound takes the MVP title. It set up everything and walked with you since the start to the end of the game.
This game was amazing!
***************
Ok, so I just copy+paste'd my review from the original game because, let's be honest, it is the same game. However I want to add the following:
This game takes you to new environments and it really complements the main story. I don't want to go in detail here, to avoid spoilers but as the DLC name states, you will be playing the whistleblower from the main story.
Not only you get to explore new areas and new environments but you will be able to revisit places where you've been in the original game, although they will be slightly altered.
I trully LOVED this DLC, one of the antagonists made it for me. Absolutely amazing!
The chases are also really great and I think they surpassed the original game.
I had a great time with this DLC, it is a MUST if you liked the original game.

Recomended!

Outlast Whistleblower is a DLC for Outlast. The game sets before and during the Murkoff slaughter. This game's atmosphere is still the same, but with a twist, some visually disturbing atmosphere added throughout the story. Added some scary villains throughout the story. I will tell the worst villains I come across throughout the gameplay, it's the naked creepy guy with a chainsaw who's trying to cook me and the really disturbing one... a guy with a suit... who's looking for women. The story is straight forward and self explanatory if you know what is going on after you play the main Outlast. Finally, there's no three key sequence throughout the game. The game is relatively short, about 2 - 3 hours if you are looking for documents to read the backstory.

+Pros
+ Added villains to get you chasing
+ Still scary yet disturbing atmosphere
+ Less jumpscares
+ Gut wrenching cutscenes

-Cons
- Short game

This DLC is recommended. The atmosphere with graphically disturbing, villains and backstory of the game. It's still the same Outlast but less jumpscares, I had a great experience with this DLC but I dont think the price range of this DLC is I guess too much, like 2 - 3 hours of gameplay should be 3 or 5 dollar price range. Still, it's a great additional of the game.

*Note: This review has been written assuming that you have completed the main campaign in Outlast. There may be spoilers for the main game ahead. Read at your own discretion. There are no spoilers for the DLC.

In the Whistleblower DLC, you will play as Waylon Park, the software engineer that authored the first document that you stumble upon in Outlast. This added content is a prequel that begins prior to the events in the base game, and then stretches throughout; eventually overlapping with the time period where you killed the abominable Dr. Trager. Set out to expose the Murkoff Corporation for what they really are, a sick and deranged business ensemble, we find out that Waylon was the one who sent the anonymous tip to Miles.

Caught on his actions just moments after hitting the send button, Waylon is forced into Murkoff's grotesque hypnotherapy program as a punishment for his misdeed of trying to expose the Corporation for their true intentions. It is now hereby your ultimate objective to escape Mount Massive Asylum alive, and to see your wife Lisa again. While you will traverse many of the same areas that Miles did, there are also new slaughter chambers for the exploring. Of course, along with fresh places come the new, absurd faces of evil and insanity that you must survive encountering. If you thought the villains in Outlast's main campaign were deranged, you really haven't seen anything yet.

An insatiable cannibal and a man hellbent on making you his forced gender reassigned queen are your primary adversaries, as well as an old favorite returns to haunt your nightmares. As you're already familiar with the gameplay from the base game, I won't go in to as much detail here; it's more of the same stealth and chase sequences, with more of a focus on being chased. What really makes the Whistleblower DLC stand out though, is the way that Red Barrel pushed the envelope even further with not only how much nudity that you see (including your own in-game ♥♥♥♥♥♥), but how over-the-top crazy these bad guys are. Not to mention the gratifyingly lavish amounts of blood. In the primary campaign, the only foe that you really got up close and personal with was Dr. Trager, but the two new baddies make him seem like he was completely normal; you really become intimate with both of them.

Of course, there are new notes and documents to collect here; most of the documents will explain your new 'friends' to you, while the notes are your lovelorn thoughts to Lisa, your wife. They are still very much worth collecting and reading, as they cause you to get a deeper idea of the crazies that are after you, and the horrors that the Murkoff Corporation have put them through, as well as the notes help you to get more emotionally attached to Waylon. Even though you never overlap directly with Miles, it eventually seems like you're always just a few steps behind him.

Whereas Outlast itself lasts between 5-6 hours, the Whistleblower DLC clocks in between 2-3. For the asking price of $9.99 CAD, that isn't bad considering the blood-soaked amount of content that you end up getting. If this is a taste of what is to come with Outlast 2, then I cannot wait to see how Red Barrel blaze the trail of the survival horror genre. This DLC is worth it to experience the frighteningly insane enemies alone, much less the massive, extra amounts of blood and gore that have been included. I would go as far to say that this DLC is scarier than the main campaign. This, my readers, is DLC done right, and it's an absolute must buy.

Rating: 5.0/5.0 - An astonishing achievement, this game must be played.

I thought Outlast was twisted and then I played the Whistleblower DLC.

There were things I never wanted to see done to the human body.

I kept wondering when I would see a woman in this game. But, after seeing what the doctor did to the men I'm really quite happy that my gender was left out.

I 100% recommend the DLC since the Whistleblower's story really adds to the understanding of the core game. And, it's equally as terrifying as Outlast, if not more gorey and grotesque. Plus, you really feel for the whistleblower as you find out he has a family and kids and might not ever make it out of this torture chamber.

Outlast: Whistleblower is a DLC for the first person survival-horror, Outlast, developed and published by Red Barrels. The game starts as a prequel to Outlast, revealing the reasons behind Mount Massive Asylum's outbreak, while simultaneously overlapping with the main story to reveal its conclusion.
Somehow, the DLC managed to be even more terrifying, bloody, brutal and disturbing than the main game, with 2-3h of gameplay. I haven't been so disturbed ever since I played The Cat Lady and Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

How a dlc should be, this dlc is the bow on top of the perfect grusome package you get with Outlast. This serves as a wrapup for the overall story of Outlast, and bridges some of the gaps and answers some of the questions that were unsatisfied by the main storyline. Overall, this dlc is a great wrapup to the game.

In Whistleblower you play as Waylon Park, a man working a short while for Murkoff Corporation. Upon realizing he has been working for people who profit from illegal and immoral practices, he mails various journalists with one of them being Miles Upshur. Waylon gets himself in trouble when his employer finds out and unwillingly has himself committed. It's Waylon's time to escape from the crazy asylum to get back to his family.

The DLC follows in the same vein as the main game. Recording the events with a camcorder and running away from assailants. You get to see and read some background to Murkoff's shady experiments and there's also a couple new enemies after you, like cannibal Frank Manera or serial killer Eddie Gluskin who is obsessed in finding a bride. The latter one is incredibly well written and designed character. So well made that he was the reason why I would play the DLC many times over, just to hear him call me "Darling!" and sing in such a charming voice.

Even though Whistleblower takes about 2 hours to complete for a first timer (less than an hour after that) in that short time you will be pretty horrified. It seems to be a lot more gruesome, especially towards the end. I myself would feel pretty sick if I was a man.

I'm happy that the ending, which is also a conlusion to the main game, is much better. The lackluster ending and last chapter of Outlast disappointed me so my mind was at peace after finishing Whistleblower.

If there is something to complain about the annoying film grain and motion blur is still there unless you mess with the game files. And I still hate to see them recycle the character models meaning you see a lot of bald, bushy-eyebrow patients and guards which are exact replicas of each other.

As DLC goes it's a good addition for the great base game. Even better if it was already included since Outlast was fairly short and some things were left vague or not really explained.

In my opinion, a fantastic DLC. It is uncommonly gruesome and VERY disturbing. Perhaps the most graphic and gory game I've played. But it is also deeply psychological, and contains some appropriately subtle political commentary on the terror of atrocious, amoral corporations, and, somehow, gender politics. It's damn good. Just like the original, it is an extremely dark artistic vision of the world. And we NEED this kind of vision as inspiration if we are to, you know... rise above. All corporations are like Murkhoff. A jolt such as this game may shock us into action.

Would certainly bleed from my eyeballs again.
